Abstract:Pathogenic bacteria cause several diseases in humans and plants and systematic bactericidal agents are progressively losing activity due to the growing bacterial resistance. Chitosan is a polymer obtained from natural sources with remarkable bactericidal properties. Here, chitosan (CHT)-metal complexes were synthesized using monovalent (Ag+), bivalent (Ni2+, Cu2+, Mn2+) and trivalent (Fe3+) metal ions, and their bactericidal activity were investigated against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria strains. The association of the metal centers in the chitosan backbone increases its bactericidal effect for all tested cases. The Ag/Chitosan complex displayed a higher bactericidal effect, as expected due to the intrinsic activity of Ag+ ions. However, even the metal ions with no intrinsic bactericidal effect, exhibited enhancement factors when complexed with chitosan. The results suggested that the inhibitory properties of the complexes are correlated to the nature of the coordinated bond established between the metal center and the chitosan ligand.
