Abstract:The dynamic impact of static magnetic fields (SMF) on the nitritation process was evaluated from electron transport and the microbial community structure by reducing the SMF intensity from 40 mT to 0 mT in a sequencing batch reactor. While the reactor was with 10 mT SMF, COD and ammonium nitrogen concentrations were 196.42 ± 5.19 mg/L and 96.99 ± 0.53 mg/L respectively, the nitrite accumulation rate was 93.56 ± 1.19%, and the highest hydroxylamine oxidoreductase activity, cytochrome c content, and electron transport system activity were 15.879 ± 0.055 U/mg MLVSS, 0.086 ± 0.001 mg/g MLVSS and 0.288 ± 0.005 μg O 2 /g·min respectively. SMF can accelerate the start-up of the nitritation process, and the reactor had better nitritation performance while the SMF intensity was in the range of 10 mT ~ 20mT. The application of SMF can improve the nitritation process via enhancing the electron transport and changing the microbial community structure.
