Abstract:Like previous educational technologies, artificial intelligence in education (AIEd) threatens to disrupt the status quo, with proponents highlighting the potential for efficiency and democratization, and skeptics warning of industrialization and alienation. However, unlike frequently discussed applications of AI in autonomous vehicles, military and cybersecurity concerns, and healthcare, AI's impacts on education policy and practice have not yet captured the public's attention. This paper, therefore, evaluates the status of AIEd, with special attention to intelligent tutoring systems and anthropomorphized artificial educational agents. I discuss AIEd's purported capacities, including the abilities to simulate teachers, provide robust student differentiation, and even foster socio-emotional engagement. Next, to situate developmental pathways for AIEd going forward, I contrast sociotechnical possibilities and risks through two idealized futures. Finally, I consider a recent proposal to use peer review as a gatekeeping strategy to prevent harmful research. This proposal serves as a jumping off point for recommendations to AIEd stakeholders towards improving their engagement with socially responsible research and implementation of AI in educational systems.

Abstract:This article examines students' opinions regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) as a teammate in solving complex problems. The overarching goal of the study is to explore the effectiveness of AI as a collaborative partner in educational settings. In the study, 15 groups of grade 9 students (59 students total) were assigned a challenging problem related to space exploration and were given access to an AI teammate. Following the task, the students participated in focus group discussions to gain insight into their perspectives on collaborating with AI. These discussions were analysed using thematic analysis to identify key themes. Epistemic Network Analysis was then used to quantify and visualise this data. The results suggest that students perceive AI with regard to two main themes: Trust in AI and the Capability of AI. The study's outcomes shed light on how students perceive AI and provide practical recommendations for educators to effectively incorporate AI into classrooms. Specifically, the recommendations include strategies for building student trust in AI systems through Explainable AI processes. This, in turn, encourages collaboration between humans and AI and promotes the development of AI literacy among students. The findings of this study are a valuable addition to the ongoing discussion on AI in education and offer actionable insights for educators to navigate the integration of AI technologies in support of student learning and growth. The scientific contribution of this study lies in its empirical investigation of student-AI interaction, providing evidence-based insights for enhancing educational practices.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) may be utilized outside of traditional computer settings and is also readily available in low-cost smart devices, making AI easily accessible to general population. Built-in capabilities for conducting complicated computer operations (edge computing), cloud-based services for collaboratively addressing difficult issues, access to huge quantities of open and closed data resources, and conciliatory accession for agile network connections are all available on these low-cost devices. Education is helped by AI in at least two ways: (1) the educational process – assistance and modifications to pedagogy and educator's routine function; and (2) the educational ambit and content – what kind of education is needed. Author, in this article, explores the challenges and potentialities that AI offers in the field of education. While the focus is on AI's participation, it may be difficult to differentiate it from other technological advancements, especially when it comes to work life. Author conclude that AI (and associated technological advancements) will substitute some professions (didactics will not be required), that other professions will transform impressively (didactic materials will need to be updated), and that a significant number of novel vocations will be created (new-fangled didactics must be constituted). In educational operations – the task itself – AI will be a reformer as well as a facilitator, altering the characteristics and division of labor.

Abstract:With the emerging opportunities of artificial intelligence (AI), learning and teaching may be supported in situ and in real time for more efficient and valid solutions. Hence, AI has the potential to further revolutionize the integration of human and artificial intelligence and impact human and machine collaboration in learning and teaching (De Laat et al., 2020 ). The discourse around the utilization of AI in education shifted from being narrowly focused on automation-based tasks to augmentation of human capabilities linked to learning and teaching (Chatti et al., 2020 ). In this regard, in reciprocal interaction, tasks can be distributed between humans and the AI (Molenaar, 2022 ). As such, AI systems can analyze large datasets, including unstructured data, in real time, and can detect patterns or structures that can be used for intelligent human decision making in learning and teaching situations (Ifenthaler, 2015 ). For instance, recommender systems are designed to support learners in areas where the amount of data exceeds the individual's abilities to process it and provide them with the most relevant, interesting, or useful artifacts (Verbert et al., 2012 ). Conventional methods, such as collaborative filtering or content-based recommender systems, assume that learners with similar preferences would favor the same things (Hemmler et al., 2022 ). Examples of successful adaptation include finding relevant learning content (Deschênes, 2020 ), entire courses (Guruge et al., 2021 ), or the optimal sequence of learning content and activities (Kerres & Buntins, 2020 ). Due to the remaining challenges of implementing meaningful AI in educational contexts, especially for more sophisticated tasks, the reciprocal collaboration of humans and AI might be a suitable approach for enhancing the capacities of both (Baker, 2016 ).

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Education claims to have the potential for building personalised curricula, as well as bringing opportunities for democratising education and creating a renaissance of new ways of teaching and learning. Millions of students are starting to benefit from the use of these technologies, but millions more around the world are not, due to the digital divide and deep pre-existing social and educational inequalities. If this trend continues, the first large-scale delivery of AI in Education could lead to greater educational inequality, along with a global misallocation of educational resources motivated by the current techno-solutionist narrative, which proposes technological solutions as a quick and flawless way to solve complex real-world problems. This work focuses on posing questions about the future of AI in Education, intending to initiate the pressing conversation that could set the right foundations (e.g., inclusion and diversity) for a new generation of education that is permeated with AI technology. The main goal of our opinion piece is to conceptualise a sustainable, large-scale and inclusive AI for the education ecosystem that facilitates equitable, high-quality lifelong learning opportunities for all. The contribution starts by synthesising how AI might change how we learn and teach, focusing on the case of personalised learning companions and assistive technology for disability. Then, we move on to discuss some socio-technical features that will be crucial to avoiding the perils of these AI systems worldwide (and perhaps ensuring their success by leveraging more inclusive education). This work also discusses the potential of using AI together with free, participatory and democratic resources, such as Wikipedia, Open Educational Resources and open-source tools. We emphasise the need for collectively designing human-centred, transparent, interactive and collaborative AI-based algorithms that empower and give complete agency to stakeholders, as well as supporting new emerging pedagogies. Finally, we ask what it would take for this educational revolution to provide egalitarian and empowering access to education that transcends any political, cultural, language, geographical and learning-ability barriers, so that educational systems can be responsive to all learners' needs.

Abstract:New advancements in machine learning and AI can be used to augment student learning and teacher capabilities. Examples of AI approaches in education include generating personalized student recommendations, autograding essays, and improving educational resources. AI programs intended to improve education can be categorized informally into three groups: Guidance, Learning, and Teacher. These categories are general and not necessarily mutually exclusive, but provide a framework for organization and further development. Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing various aspects of life, including education. AI in education (AIEd) fosters teachers' understanding of students' learning processes, offers personalized and adaptive learning, and provides instantaneous feedback. It has the potential to improve academic performance and reduce educational disparities. This study aims to engage researchers, policymakers, teachers, students, and engineers in a dialogue about AIEd. It provides an overview of studies on opportunities, challenges, and recommendations for future research, focusing on specific educational outcomes. A comprehensive perspective is needed to understand the function of AIEd. This research utilizes bibliometric analysis and systematic literature review to analyze AIEd, presenting results as a specific bibliometric network using the VOSviewer tool. Research findings that AIEd-based environments are enhancing student learning, but their personalized learning is still in its experimental stage. Challenges include a lack of resources and ethical concerns. AI chatbots and interactive books aid language learning, but they also have advantages and disadvantages. The humanities must balance these advantages and disadvantages.

Abstract:The options for Artificial intelligence (AI) tools used in teacher education are increasing daily, but more is only sometimes better for teachers working in already complex classroom settings. This team discusses the increase of AI in schools and provides an example from administrators, teacher educators, and computer scientists of an AI virtual agent and the research to support student learning and teachers in classroom settings. The authors discuss the creation and potential of virtual characters in elementary classrooms, combined with biometrics and facial emotional recognition, which in this study has impacted student learning and offered support to the teacher. The researchers share the development of the AI agent, the lessons learned, the integration of biometrics and facial tracking, and how teachers use this emerging form of AI both in classroom-based center activities and to support students’ emotional regulation. The authors conclude by describing the application of this type of support in teacher preparation programs and a vision of the future of using AI agents in instruction.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) stands as a pivotal technological advancement with profound societal implications. This paper delves into a comprehensive analysis of diverse articles and perspectives to scrutinize AI's influence on educational inequality, particularly within the context of the Chinese education system. While prevailing literature often skims the surface, there's a burgeoning sentiment celebrating the human-AI synergy, often overlooking its potential to accentuate educational disparities. This research delves deeper, uncovering the intricate nexus between AI-driven education and human capital markets. The findings suggest that AI, while promising, might inadvertently perpetuate the same crises across different demographics, amplifying existing inequalities. The strong may become stronger, while the vulnerable risk further marginalization, primarily due to disparities in resource allocation. To mitigate these challenges, this paper proposes three actionable recommendations. Furthermore, recognizing the global implications of this issue, the study advocates for international collaboration to ensure equitable access to AI-related educational resources, championing the cause of educational fairness worldwide.
The Turing Teacher: Identifying core attributes for AI learning in K-12

Abstract:Introduction: Artificial intelligence in the educational domain has many uses; however, using AI specifically to enhance education and teaching in a K-12 environment poses the most significant challenges to its use. Beyond usage and application, the quality of the education is made even more arduous due to the dynamics of teaching primary and secondary school children, whose needs far exceed mere fact recollection. Utilizing prior research using AI in education and online education in the K-12 space, we explore some of the hurdles that AI applications face in K-12 teaching and provide core attributes for a "Turing Teacher," i.e., an AI powered technology for learning, specifically targeting the K-12 space. Methods: Using a survey, which included qualitative responses during the implementation of online learning during the Covid Pandemic, we analyze the results using univariate and multivariate tests and analyzed the qualitative responses to create core attributes needed for AI powered teaching technology. Results: The results present the challenges faced by any technology in an education setting and show that AI technology must help overcome negative feelings about technology in education. Further, the core attributes identified in the research must be addressed from the three stakeholder perspectives of teachers, parents and students. Discussion: We present our findings and lay the groundwork for future research in the area of AI powered education. The Turing Teacher must be able to adapt and collaborate with real teachers and address the varying needs of students. In addition, we explore the use of AI technology as a means to close the digital divide in traditionally disadvantaged communities.

Abstract:This paper examines the transformative role of Large Language Models (LLMs) in education and their potential as learning tools, despite their inherent risks and limitations. The authors propose seven approaches for utilizing AI in classrooms: AI-tutor, AI-coach, AI-mentor, AI-teammate, AI-tool, AI-simulator, and AI-student, each with distinct pedagogical benefits and risks. The aim is to help students learn with and about AI, with practical strategies designed to mitigate risks such as complacency about the AI's output, errors, and biases. These strategies promote active oversight, critical assessment of AI outputs, and complementarity of AI's capabilities with the students' unique insights. Abstract:Abstract In service of the goal of examining how cognitive science can facilitate human–computer interactions in complex systems, we explore how cognitive psychology research might help educators better utilize artificial intelligence and AI supported tools as facilitatory to learning, rather than see these emerging technologies as a threat. We also aim to provide historical perspective, both on how automation and technology has generated unnecessary apprehension over time, and how generative AI technologies such as ChatGPT are a product of the discipline of cognitive science. We introduce a model for how higher education instruction can adapt to the age of AI by fully capitalizing on the role that metacognition knowledge and skills play in determining learning effectiveness. Finally, we urge educators to consider how AI can be seen as a critical collaborator to be utilized in our efforts to educate around the critical workforce skills of effective communication and collaboration.

Abstract:The anti-dependency teaching strategy aims to prepare technology-based students for the evolving world of artificial intelligence (AI). Instead of teaching students to be passive users of technology, it pushes them to become active producers and problem solvers. By cultivating creativity, critical thinking abilities, and a growth mentality, this approach equips students to use AI as a tool for innovation. It explores the potential of AI while acknowledging its limitations and ethical implications through project-based learning, interdisciplinary methodologies, and real-world applications. In order to promote an innovative culture and group problem-solving, it also integrates collaborative learning environments. The approach places a strong emphasis on adaptation and ongoing learning, keeping students abreast of developments in artificial intelligence and related fields. The study's respondents were twenty-four (24) instructors of technology-based disciplines with creative elements. By putting this plan into practice, educators can give students the knowledge and perspective they need to effectively navigate the AI era, producing a new generation of creative thinkers who can transform society for the better.

Abstract:The present discussion examines the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in educational settings, focusing on the necessity for AI literacy, prompt engineering proficiency, and enhanced critical thinking skills. The introduction of AI into education marks a significant departure from conventional teaching methods, offering personalized learning and support for diverse educational requirements, including students with special needs. However, this integration presents challenges, including the need for comprehensive educator training and curriculum adaptation to align with societal structures. AI literacy is identified as crucial, encompassing an understanding of AI technologies and their broader societal impacts. Prompt engineering is highlighted as a key skill for eliciting specific responses from AI systems, thereby enriching educational experiences and promoting critical thinking. There is detailed analysis of strategies for embedding these skills within educational curricula and pedagogical practices. This is discussed through a case-study based on a Swiss university and a narrative literature review, followed by practical suggestions of how to implement AI in the classroom.

Creativity and Artificial Intelligence-A Student Perspective

Abstract:Creativity is a core 21st-century skill taught globally in education systems. As Artificial Intelligence (AI) is being implemented in classrooms worldwide, a key question is proposed: how do students perceive AI and creativity? Twelve focus groups and eight one-on-one interviews were conducted with secondary school-aged students after they received training in both creativity and AI over eight weeks. An analysis of the interviews highlights that the students view the relationship between AI and creativity as four key concepts: social, affective, technological and learning factors. The students with a higher self-reported understanding of AI reported more positive thoughts about integrating AI into their classrooms. The students with a low understanding of AI tended to be fearful of AI. Most of the students indicated a thorough understanding of creativity and reported that AI could never match human creativity. The implications of the results are presented, along with recommendations for the future, to ensure AI can be effectively integrated into classrooms.

Abstract:The Institute for Student‐AI Teaming (iSAT) addresses the foundational question: how to promote deep conceptual learning via rich socio‐collaborative learning experiences for all students?—a question that is ripe for AI‐based facilitation and has the potential to transform classrooms. We advance research in speech, computer vision, human‐agent teaming, computer‐supported collaborative learning, expansive co‐design, and the science of broadening participation to design and study next generation AI technologies (called AI Partners) embedded in student collaborative learning teams in coordination with teachers. Abstract:This study explores the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in high school education, focusing on its implications for student motivation and learning through the framework of Self-Determination Theory. As AI technologies like ChatGPT4 become more prevalent in educational settings, their potential to enhance learning by catering to students' needs for competence is significant. However, this investigation also highlights the challenges associated with AI misuse, which can undermine students' autonomy and relatedness, leading to academic dishonesty and superficial learning. The research underscores the importance of balancing technological advancements with ethical engagement and intrinsic motivation. Through qualitative analysis, including interviews and thematic analysis of student and teacher feedback, the study reveals a nuanced picture of AI's role in education. It suggests that while AI offers considerable benefits, its integration requires careful consideration of ethical use, digital literacy, and the cultivation of intrinsic motivation. The findings advocate for educational policies and practices that not only leverage AI's potential to enrich learning experiences but also address the challenges posed by its misuse. This study contributes to the ongoing discourse on technology in education, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach to AI integration that supports ethical standards and promotes a meaningful educational experience.
