Abstract:Soil phosphorus (P) availability is critical for maintaining ecosystem productivity during vegetation succession. However, it remains incompletely known what drives soil P dynamics during vegetation succession, especially in cold regions such as the Tibetan Plateau. Here, we sampled soils from four vegetation types along a secondary successional gradient (grasslands → shrublands → secondary forests → primary forests) in the subalpine region of the Tibetan Plateau to explore the drivers of soil P dynamics along the successional gradient. Soil P dynamics were indicated by changes in soil P fractions sequentially extracted by a modified Hedley fractionation procedure. We found significant increases in the concentrations of total inorganic P (Pi) (58.3%), Resin-Pi (93.5%), NaHCO3-Pi (63.1%), and HCl-Pi (81.7%) along the successional gradient, without a significant change in total P or residual P concentration along the successional gradient. Soil organic P (Po; dominated by c. HCl-Po) increased by 16.7% and then decreased by 37.5% during secondary succession. The increase in Pi was related to the accrual in soil organic carbon during vegetation succession. The decrease in soil Po concentration was related to the decline in vegetation richness and fungal richness along the successional gradient. Moreover, the promoted relative abundance of Basidiomycota, Mortierella and Russula could decrease the soil Po concentration in the late successional, mid-successional and late successional stages, respectively. Overall, our study highlights the joint modulation of soil P dynamics by abiotic factors and the microbial community during vegetation succession.
