Abstract:With permanent porosity and intrinsic crystallinity, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have great potential for solar energy conversion. However, the crystallinity of COFs necessitates reversible linkages like imine, leading to the inadequate chemical stability of COFs as photocatalysts. To overcome this inadequacy by incorporating S under thermal treatment, post-synthesis modifications (PSMs) transform an imine-linked COF, TTI-COF, into a thiazole-linked COF, TTT-COF. The morphology and crystallinity of TTT-COF are similar to that of TTI-COF. Compared to TTI-COF, TTT-COF secures evident amelioration of stability and optoelectronic properties supported by both experiments and theoretical calculations. Consequently, these two COFs are exploited for the photocatalytic oxidation of organic sulfides. Under blue light-emitting diode irradiation, TTI-COF marginally impels the reaction. In contrast, TTT-COF emerges with significantly better activity for selective oxidation of organic sulfides with oxygen in ethanol. This work sheds light on the transformative power of PSMs for tailored COFs in selective visible light photocatalysis.

Abstract:Triazine, possessing planar and fully conjugated attributes, purveys ample space to construct well-defined crystalline polymers like graphic carbon nitrides (g-C3N4), covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs), and covalent organic frameworks (COFs). Herein, g-C3N4, CTF-1, and TP-COF were successfully synthesized and systematically confirmed by a series of characterizations, aiming at visible light photocatalytic activation of O2. Compared to CTF-1 and g-C3N4, TP-COF was endowed with the best photocatalytic performance by several inherent properties, including a large specific surface area, a suitable bandgap, and superior charge transfer. The blue light-induced selective conversion of organic sulfides has been achieved expeditiously with O2 over TP-COF photocatalyst. Moreover, rigorous control experiments and in situ electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) suggest that electron and energy transfer pathways contribute to the selective formation of desired sulfoxides. This work emphasizes that the tailor-made trait of COFs provides an ideal plarform of customizing two-dimensional (2D) photoactive COFs based on triazine for visible light-induced selective chemical transformations.

Abstract:A zirconium metal-organic framework (MOF), NU-1003, along with TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl), is constructed as a system of cooperative photocatalysis for blue light-powered aerobic sulfoxidation. The incorporation of 4 mol% of TEMPO enhances the hole transfer and thereby aerobic sulfoxidation by NU-1003 photocatalysis, demonstrating the pivotal role of a redox mediator in transforming an established MOF.

Abstract:The performance of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as photocatalysts, grounded on light absorption and optoelectronic properties, can be precisely regulated by their building blocks. Thienothiophene can be an electron-rich building block of choice for the construction of COFs. Herein, two thienothiophene-based COFs are constructed by the condensation of thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-2,5-dicarbaldehyde (TT) with 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene (TAPB) and 2,4,6-tris(4-aminophenyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TAPT), respectively, affording TT-TAPB-COF and TT-TAPT-COF of highly crystalline affirmed by powder X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. In contrast to TT-TAPB-COF, TT-TAPT-COF delivers more effective light-triggered charge separation and migration because of the electron-deficient yet planar triazine in TAPT. As such, TT-TAPT-COF photocatalyst performs better performance than TT-TAPB-COF for the oxidation of sulfides with molecular oxygen. Besides, visible light-triggered oxidation of many organic sulfides over TT-TAPT-COF photocatalyst produces corresponding sulfoxides with excellent conversions and selectivities. The exceptional stability of TT-TAPT-COF photocatalyst is demonstrated by recycling experiments. Substantially, the reaction mechanism is investigated by the quenching experiments and spectroscopic studies. This work foretells the rational design of COFs by configuring donor–acceptor for the precise application of photocatalysts.

Abstract:Visible light photocatalysis of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) has made significant progress in recent years. Benzotrithiophene (BTT), a planar, electron-rich building block, turns out to be foundational in assembling COFs in which the full π-conjugation of BTT is essential to facilitate electron transfer. Herein, a sp 2 carbon-conjugated COF, namely BTT-sp 2 c-COF, is assembled from benzo[1,2-b:3,4-b′:5,6-b′′]trithiophene-2,5,8-tricarbaldehyde and [1,1′:4′,1′′-terphenyl]-4,4′′-dicarbonitrile towards photocatalysis. More importantly, TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl, 1 mol%) could considerably accelerate the selective oxidation of organic sulfides with O 2 over BTT-sp 2 c-COF. TEMPO mediates hole transfer between BTT-sp 2 c-COF and organic sulfides, and O-atoms are incorporated into sulfoxides via an electron transfer pathway. Merging BTT-sp 2 c-COF photocatalysis with TEMPO generally applies to transforming organic sulfides into sulfoxides. This work implies the full π-conjugation of electron-rich building blocks into COFs is a viable strategy for selective visible light photocatalysis.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have recently received significant attention as effective photocatalysts which rely on the selected photoactive building units. Benzoselenadiazole is one such unit that enables swift light-induced charge transfer and therefore could be used to construct COFs for photocatalytic conversions. Herein, in the presence of an organobase, 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol ( Tp ) and 4,4′-(benzoselenadiazole-4,7-diyl)dianiline ( BSe ) are adopted to construct a highly crystalline COF, TpBSe-COF . As designed, TpBSe-COF could implement the blue light photocatalytic conversion of organic sulfides to sulfoxides more adequately than TpDT-COF. Conspicuously, introducing the benzoselenadiazole unit into COFs can broaden the visible light absorption and accelerate electron transfer. Moreover, the synergy between TpBSe-COF and TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine- N -oxyl) for selective photocatalysis could significantly improve the conversions of organic sulfides to sulfoxides with molecular oxygen. This work suggests the vast potential of benzoselenadiazole COFs in selective photocatalytic conversions.

Abstract:Visible-light-promoted aerobic oxidation of sulfide into sulfoxide with water as the sole solvent is of great interest in green chemistry. Herein, two purely organic heterogeneous photocatalysts based on a TADF compound were prepared and used for this oxidation transformation. The difference in catalytic activity between the two photocatalysts was conveniently revealed and attributed to the way the photocatalysts were cross-linked. Higher catalytic activity was achieved by cross-linking methyl carbonate bonds and forming hydrophobic domains inside the photocatalyst. Inhibition and in situ ESR experiments provided mechanistic insight into the photocatalytic sulfoxidation reaction and confirmed that both 1 O 2 and O 2 ̇ − were involved in the catalytic process.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising visible light photocatalysts for aerobic oxidation reactions. However, COFs usually suffer from the assault of reactive oxygen species, leading to hindered electron transfer. This scenario could be addressed by integrating a mediator to promote photocatalysis. Starting with 4,4′-(benzo-2,1,3-thiadiazole-4,7-diyl)dianiline (BTD) and 2,4,6-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp), TpBTD-COF is developed as a photocatalyst for aerobic sulfoxidation. Adding an electron transfer mediator 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1‐oxyl (TEMPO), the conversions are radically accelerated, over 2.5 times of that without TEMPO. Moreover, the robustness of TpBTD-COF is preserved by TEMPO. Remarkably, TpBTD-COF could endure multiple cycles of sulfoxidation, even with higher conversions than the fresh one. TpBTD-COF photocatalysis with TEMPO implements diverse aerobic sulfoxidation by an electron transfer pathway. This work highlights that benzothiadiazole COFs are an avenue for tailor-made photocatalytic transformations.

Abstract:The 2D covalent organic frameworks (COFs) offer many 2D planes which are suitable for π–π stacking interactions with other conjugated molecules. To improve the photocatalytic performance of COFs, the synthesis of a pyrene‐tethered 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐N‐oxyl (TEMPO) derivative cocatalyst is hereby described. The pyrene end of the cocatalyst is intercalated in between the layers of the 2D sp2 carbon‐conjugated porphyrin covalent organic framework (Por‐sp2c‐COF) via π–π stacking interactions evidenced by theoretical and experimental studies. The immobilization of pyrene‐tethered TEMPO significantly enhances both the efficiency of photoinduced hole transfer and the stability of Por‐sp2c‐COF for the selective aerobic oxidation of a series of sulfides to sulfoxides under the irradiation of 623 nm red LEDs. This work highlights the merit of π–π stacking as a facile and efficient approach of immobilizing hole transfer cocatalysts without disrupting the physiochemical properties of the 2D COF photocatalyst. π–π stacking intercalation of pyrene‐tethered 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinyl‐N‐oxyl (TEMPO) cocatalyst into a 2D covalent organic framework (COF) induces cooperative photocatalysis for red light‐driven selective aerobic oxidation of sulfides.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is an efficient and sustainable approach to convert solar energy into chemical energy, simultaneously supplying valuable chemicals. In this study, a novel metal-organic framework (MOF) compound is constructed from anthracene-based organic linkers, which shows visible-light absorption and efficient photoinduced charge generation property. It was applied for triggering photooxidation of benzylamines and sulfides in the presence of environmental benign oxidants of molecular oxygen or hydrogen peroxide. Results show that it is a highly selective photocatalyst for oxidation reactions to produce valuable imines or sulfoxides. We further investigate the underlying mechanism for these photocatalytic reactions by recognizing reactive oxygen species in the reactions. It has been demonstrated that the superoxide radical (O2•-), generated by electron transfer from a photoexcited MOF to oxidants, serves as the main active species for the oxidations. The work demonstrates the great potential of photoactive MOFs for the transformation of organic chemicals into valuable complexes.

Abstract:Phenoxyl radicals originating from phenols through oxidation or photoinduction are relatively stable and exhibit mild oxidative activity, which endows them with the potential for photocatalysis. Herein, a stable and recyclable metal-organic framework constructed of a binaphthol derivative ligand has been synthesized and functions as an efficient heterogeneous photocatalyst. shows fairly good catalytic activity and substrate compatibility toward the selective oxidation of sulfides to sulfoxides under visible light irradiation. Such irradiation of converts the phenolic hydroxyl groups of the binaphthol derivative ligand to phenoxyl radicals through excited state intramolecular proton transfer, and the excited state photocatalyst triggers the single-electron oxidation of the sulfide. No reactive oxygen species are produced in the photocatalytic process, and triplet O directly participates in the reaction, endowing with wide substrate compatibility and high selectivity, which also proposes a promising pathway for the direct activation of substrates via phenoxyl radicals.
An Isopolymolybdate-Incorporated Metal–Organic Framework with Sulfite Oxidase-Mimicking Activity for Photocatalytic Oxidation of Sulfides Utilizing In Situ-Generated Singlet Oxygen

Abstract:Developing new photocatalysts for sulfide oxidation utilizing in situ-generated 1O2 is very significant. Inspired by natural enzymatic processes, we synthesized a mimic sulfite oxidase (SO), {[Co(Mo4O13)(TPT)2]} (CoMo-TPT), by incorporating an isopolymolybdate anion [Mo4O13]2- into a 2,4,6-tri(4-pyridyl)-1,3,5-triazine (TPT)-based metal-organic framework under mild hydrothermal conditions. In this structure, {Mo4O13} units with intrinsic SO-like catalytic sites are beneficial for the selective oxidation of sulfite and thioether. The ultraviolet-visible spectra of CoMo-TPT exhibited strong absorption from 250 to 650 nm and potential application in the utilization of solar energy. Mott-Schottky measurements indicated that CoMo-TPT is an n-type semiconductor with a LUMO value of -0.70 V (vs NHE) and a HOMO value of 1.39 V. The transient photocurrent responses with strong current density cycles with visible light indicated CoMo-TPT has a high photochemical activity. The lower resistance indicated that CoMo-TPT has a higher efficiency of photoinduced electron and hole separation. CoMo-TPT displayed a high efficiency of 99% and a selectivity of 97.3% in photocatalytic oxidation of sulfides by utilizing in situ-generated 1O2 through a tandem process of formation of H2O2 from O2 followed by catalyzed disproportionation of H2O2.

Abstract:Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a vital role in both chemistry and physiology. Developing effective photocatalysts becomes a feasible approach to trigger the generation of ROS. Herein, a photosensitive covalent organic framework (COF) was rationally designed and constructed by incorporating the photoactive triphenylamine moieties into its skeleton, characterizations of which not only showed the success formation of the highly crystalline and stable framework, but also revealed the photoactive property derived from triphenylamine-based building block. Electron paramagnetic resonance measurements displayed that the COF was an effective photocatalyst for generating ROS with one unpaired electron, that is, superoxide radical anion (O2 • –). Subsequently, its high efficiency, selectivity, and reusability in photocatalytic aerobic oxidation of sulfides confirmed that the COF is a promising photocatalyst in the applications of ROS-involved reactions, demonstrating that precisely embedding organic photochromic groups into COFs could be a powerful strategy to fabricate metal-free heterogeneous photocatalysts for targeted reactions.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) present bright prospects in visible light photocatalysis with abundant active sites and exceptional stability. Tailoring an established COF with photoactive group is a prudent strategy to extend visible light absorption toward broad photocatalysis. Here, a β-ketoenamine COF, TpBD-COF, constructed with 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) and 4,4'-biphenyldiamine (BD), is tailored with azo to validate this strategy. The insertion of azo into BD affords 4,4'-azodianiline (Azo); TpAzo-COF is successfully constructed with Tp and Azo. Intriguingly, the insertion of azo enhances π-conjugation, thereby facilitating visible light absorption and intramolecular electron transfer. Moreover, TpAzo-COF, with an appropriate electronic structure and impressive specific surface area of 1855 m2 g-1, offers substantial active sites conducive to the reduction of oxygen (O2) to superoxide. Compared with TpBD-COF, TpAzo-COF exhibits superior performance for blue light-driven oxidation of amines with O2. Superoxide controls the selective formation of product imines. This work foreshadows the remarkable capacity of tailoring COFs with photoactive group toward broad visible light photocatalysis.

Abstract:Photocatalysis is a green synthetic protocol for organic transformations. Energy and charge transfer have been proved to be very crucial for efficient photocatalytic oxidation of organic compounds. Herein, we report the synthesis of two novel MOFs named [Zn 2 (BODIPY) 2 (TDC) 2 ] ( 1 ) and [Cd(BODIPY)(TDC)]·2H 2 O ( 2 ) via a one-pot solvothermal method with a pyridine-functionalized boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) and 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylic acid (H 2 TDC). In particular, compound 1 exhibited high efficiency and selectivity toward aerobic oxidation of thioanisoles and phenylboronic acids under green and benign conditions, utilizing molecular oxygen in air as the oxidant under blue light irradiation, in a fully recyclable manner for at least 6 continuous runs without significantly reduced performance. The excellent photocatalytic activity of compound 1 originates from superoxide radical anions (O 2 ̇ − ) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) furnished by the synergistic charge transfer (CT) and energy transfer (ET) processes. Apparently, these active oxygen species enable a promising approach for the photocatalytic oxidation of organic compounds.

Abstract:Supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs) mostly require high-energy purple or blue light for photocatalytic reactions, while highly abundant and low-energy light systems have rarely been explored. Therefore, it is necessary to construct 2D SOFs for low-energy light-induced photocatalysis. This study describes the design and synthesis of a water-soluble two-dimensional (2D) supramolecular organic framework (TP-SOF) using the host–guest interaction between a triphenylamine derivative (TP-3Py) and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]). The formation of the 2D SOF can be attributed to the synergistic impact resulting from the orientated head-to-tail superposition mode between the vinylpyridine arms of TP-3Py and CB[8], which results in a significant redshift in the UV–vis absorption spectrum, especially displaying a strong absorption band in the green light region. The monomeric TP-3Py can effectively produce singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and realize the photocatalytic oxidation of thioanisole in the aqueous solution. In comparison to monomeric TP-3Py, the confinement effect of CB[8] results in a notable enhancement in the production efficiency of superoxide anion radicals (O 2 •− ), exhibiting promising prospects in the field of photocatalytic oxidation reaction, which facilitates the application of TP-SOF as a very efficient photosensitizer for the promotion of the oxidative hydroxylation of arylboronic acids under green light in the aqueous solution, giving a high yield of 91%. The present study not only presents a compelling illustration of photocatalysis utilizing a 2D SOF derived from triphenylamine, but also unveils promising avenues for the photocatalytic oxidation of SOF employing low-energy light systems.

Abstract:Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D-COFs) with permanent porosity, structural controllability, and excellent stability, are receiving ongoing attention in metal-free heterogeneous photocatalysis of organic conversions. In order to construct high optical performance COFs for selective organic transformation, herein, 2D porphyrin-based donor-acceptor (D-A) type COFs were prepared by adjusting the morphology and structure. The as-synthesized COFs facilitate charge transfer and separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, efficaciously producing superoxide radical anions as mediates for selective oxidation of sulfides (97% conversion and 99% of selectivity) and reductive dehalogenation of 2-bromoacetophenone (up to 99% conversion and 82% of yield). The COFs have excellent stability and recyclability, demonstrating that the 2D D-A type COFs are attractive as heterogeneous photocatalyst for visible light driven organics transformation.

Abstract:To date, two‐dimensional β‐ketoenamine‐linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have exhibited tremendous potential in visible light photocatalysis due to their broad absorption and favorable stability provided by the linkage. Here, with 1,3,5‐triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) as the stationary building block, various COFs can be constructed to address different challenges. To inspire state‐of‐the‐art advancements toward photocatalysis, in the Concept article, the rational design of β‐ketoenamine‐linked COFs is summarized. First, the dimension of engineering the linker is considered to improve the activity of the COFs. The photocatalysis could be extended by just the linker length or by the inserted functionalities in the other building block. Second, the other dimension of integrating cocatalysts like transition metals or 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐N‐oxyl (TEMPO) with β‐ketoenamine‐linked COFs could further expand the potential in photocatalytic reactions. These prior accomplishments establish that the rational design of β‐ketoenamine‐linked COFs is instrumental in improving the photocatalytic activity, laying the foundation for future explorations.

Abstract:AbstractSinglet oxygen (1O2) is ubiquitously involved in various photocatalytic oxidation reactions; however, efficient and selective production of 1O2 is still challenging. Herein, we reported the synthesis of nickel porphyrin‐based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) incorporating functional groups with different electron‐donating/‐withdrawing features on their pore walls. These functional groups established a dedicated outer‐sphere microenvironment surrounding the Ni catalytic center that tunes the activity of the COFs for 1O2‐mediated thioether oxidation. With the increase of the electron‐donating ability of functional groups, the modulated outer‐sphere microenvironment turns on the catalytic activity from a yield of nearly zero by the cyano group functionalized COF to an excellent yield of 98 % by the methoxy group functionalized one. Electronic property investigation and density‐functional theory (DFT) calculations suggested that the distinct excitonic behaviors attributed to the diverse band energy levels and orbital compositions are responsible for the different activities. This study represents the first regulation of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) based on the strategy of outer‐sphere microenvironment modulation in COFs.
