Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) printing of human tissues and organ has been an exciting research topic in the past three decades. However, existing technological and biological challenges still require a significant amount of research. The present review highlights these challenges and discusses their potential solutions such as mapping and converting a human organ onto a 3D virtual design, synchronizing the virtual design with the printing hardware. Moreover, the paper discusses in details recent advances in formulating bio-inks and challenges in tissue construction with or without scaffold. Next, the paper reviews fusion processes effecting vascular cells and tissues. Finally, the paper deliberates the feasibility of organ printing with state-of-the-art technologies.

Abstract:<p>Three‐dimensional (3D) bioprinting is an emerging, groundbreaking strategy in tissue engineering, allowing the fabrication of living constructs with an unprecedented degree of complexity and accuracy. While this technique greatly facilitates the structuring of native tissue‐like architectures, many challenges still remain to be faced. In this review, the fruits of recent research that demonstrate how advanced bioprinting technologies, together with inspiring creativity, can be used to address these challenges are presented and discussed. Next, the future of the field is discussed, in terms of expected developments, as well as possible directions toward the realization of the vision of fully functional, engineered tissues, and organs. Last, a few hypothetical scenarios for the role 3D bioprinting may play in future tissue engineering are depicted, with an emphasis on its impact on tomorrow's regenerative medicine.</p>

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting is a rapidly growing technology that has been widely used in tissue engineering, disease studies, and drug screening. It provides the unprecedented capacity of depositing various types of biomaterials, cells, and biomolecules in a layer-by-layer fashion, with precisely controlled spatial distribution. This technology is expected to address the organ-shortage issue in the future. In this review, we first introduce three categories of 3D bioprinting strategies: inkjet-based printing (IBP), extrusion-based printing (EBP), and light-based printing (LBP). Biomaterials and cells, which are normally referred to as “bioinks,” are then discussed. We also systematically describe the recent advancements of 3D bioprinting in fabricating cell-laden artificial tissues and organs with solid or hollow structures, including cartilage, bone, skin, muscle, vascular network, and so on. The development of organs-on-chips utilizing 3D bioprinting technology for drug discovery and toxicity testing is reviewed as well. Finally, the main challenges in current studies and an outlook of the future research of 3D bioprinting are discussed.

Abstract:Three-dimensional（3 D） printing is a novel promising technology based on 3 D imaging and layer-by-layer additive fabrication.It has a profound influence on all aspects of our lives and is playing an increasing important role in many areas including engineering, manufacturing, art, education and medicine. "3 D bioprinting" has been put forward with the technical progress in 3 D printing and might be a possible way to solve the serious problem of human organ shortage in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Many research groups flung them into this area and have already made some gratifying achievements.However, it is a long way to fabricate a live organ. Many elements lead to the limitation of 3 D bioprinting. This review introduces the background and development history of 3 D bioprinting, compares different approaches of 3 D bioprinting and illustrates the key factors of the printing process. Meanwhile, this review also points out existing challenges of 3 D bioprinting and has a great prospect. Some points proposed in this review might be served as reference for the research of this field.

Abstract:Three dimensional (3D) printing is a hot topic in today's scientific, technological and commercial areas. It is recognized as the main field which promotes "the Third Industrial Revolution". Recently, human organ 3D bioprinting has been put forward into equity market as a concept stock and attracted a lot of attention. A large number of outstanding scientists have flung themselves into this field and made some remarkable headways. Nevertheless, organ 3D bioprinting is a sophisticated manufacture procedure which needs profound scientific/technological backgrounds/knowledges to accomplish. Especially, large organ 3D bioprinting encounters enormous difficulties and challenges. One of them is to build implantable branched vascular networks in a predefined 3D construct. At present, organ 3D bioprinting still in its infancy and a great deal of work needs to be done. Here we briefly overview some of the achievements of 3D bioprinting technologies in large organ, such as the bone, liver, heart, cartilage and skin, manufacturing.

Abstract:3D bioprinting techniques have emerged as a flexible tool in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine to fabricate or pattern functional 3D bio-structures with precise geometric designs, bridging the divergence between engineered and natural tissue constructs. A significantly increasing development has been achieved in understanding the relationship between the 3D-printing process and the structures, properties, and applications of the objects created. The ongoing advancement of novel biomaterial inks has enabled manufacturing of models and in vitro implants capable of achieving some level of success in preclinical trials. Remarkable progress in cell biology and biology-inspired computational design has assisted in achieving the latest milestone with planned tissue- or organ-like constructs having specific levels of functionality. However, biofabricated constructs still have a long way to go before reaching clinics. This review presents a picture of 3D bioprinting in the context of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, with focus on biomaterials-related and design-centred aspects. Biomedical applications are described in detail in relation to major tissues or organs considered in the human body. Current technical limitations, challenges, future prospects and improvements are critically outlined and discussed.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) tissue/organ printing is a major aspect of recent innovation in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. 3D tissue/organ printing aims to create 3D living tissue/organ analogues, and have evolved along with advances in 3D printing techniques. A diverse range of computer-aided 3D printing techniques have been applied to dispose living cells together with biomaterials and supporting biochemical factors within pre-designed 3D tissue/organ analogues. Recent developments in printable biomaterials, such as decellularized extracellular matrix bio-inks have enabled improvements in the functionality of the resulting 3D tissue/organ analogues. Here, we provide an overview of the 3D printing techniques and biomaterials that have been used, including the development of 3D tissue/organ analogues. In addition, in vitro models are described, and future perspectives in 3D tissue/organ printing are identified.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting is a family of rapid prototyping technologies, which assemble biomaterials, including cells and bioactive agents, under the control of a computer-aided design model in a layer-by-layer fashion. It has great potential in organ manufacturing areas with the combination of biology, polymers, chemistry, engineering, medicine, and mechanics. At present, 3D bioprinting technologies can be used to successfully print living tissues and organs, including blood vessels, skin, bones, cartilage, kidney, heart, and liver. The unique advantages of 3D bioprinting technologies for organ manufacturing have improved the traditional medical level significantly. In this article, we summarize the latest research progress of polymers in bioartificial organ 3D printing areas. The important characteristics of the printable polymers and the typical 3D bioprinting technologies for several complex bioartificial organs, such as the heart, liver, nerve, and skin, are introduced.

Abstract:There is an increase in demand for organs as transplantation is becoming a common practice to elongate human life. To reach this demand, three-dimensional bioprinting is developing from prior knowledge of scaffolds, growth factors, etc. This review paper aims to determine the current status and future possibilities of three-dimensional bioprinting of organs and evaluate the benefits and challenges, along with the history of its development. Prior research has viewed three-dimensional bioprinting as a technology that will enable safer transplantation without graft rejection and provide demand-based production. However, it faces challenges such as the need to improve biocompatibility and biofunctionality, legal and ethical issues, and the need to improve the technology itself. While the development of three-dimensional printing organs is not yet completed, we are seeing improvements and expecting it to be clinically applied soon.

Abstract:The paper presents an overview of some modern technologies for three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting of human tissues and organs. 3D bioprinting of human organs is increasingly used for the production and transplantation of artificial biological organs. Existing technologies of 3D bioprinting using bioink on a special substrate are considered. The features of the production of bioinks using biocompatible polymer compounds, hydrogels are given, some popular modern bioprinters are noted. Modern technologies of bioprinting of tissues of human organs are considered: skin, liver, lungs, heart, brain, existing technological problems in this area are given. Based on the analysis, the future prospects for the development of bioprinting technology for human organs are noted.

Analysis of scientific publications showed that in the near future, viable and fully functional artificial copies of individual human organs and tissues can be obtained.

Since its beginnings, three-dimensional printing (3DP) technology has been successful because of ongoing advances in operating principles, the range of materials and cost-saving measures. However, the 3DP technological progressions in the biomedical sector have majorly taken place in the last decade after the evolution of novel 3DP systems, generally categorised as bioprinters and biomaterials to provide a replacement, transplantation or regeneration of the damaged organs and tissue constructs of the human body. There is now substantial scientific literature accessible to support the benefits of digital healthcare procedures with the help of bioprinters. It is of the highest significance to know the fundamental principles of the available printers and the compatibility of biomaterials as their feedstock, notwithstanding the huge potential of bioprinting systems to manufacture organs and other human body components. This paper provides a precise and helpful reading of the different categories of bioprinters, suitable biomaterials, numerical simulations and modelling and examples of much acknowledged clinical practices. The paper will also cite the prominent issues that still have not received desired solutions. Overall, the article will be of great use for all the professionals, scholars and engineers concerned with the 3DP, bioprinting and biomaterials.

Abstract:<p>Physical organ models are the objects that replicate the patient-specific anatomy and have played important roles in modern medical diagnosis and disease treatment. 3D printing, as a powerful multi-function manufacturing technology, breaks the limitations of traditional methods and provides a great potential for manufacturing organ models. However, the clinical application of organ model is still in small scale, facing the challenges including high cost, poor mimicking performance and insufficient accuracy. In this review, the mainstream 3D printing technologies are introduced, and the existing manufacturing methods are divided into "directly printing" and "indirectly printing", with an emphasis on choosing suitable techniques and materials. This review also summarizes the ideas to address these challenges and focuses on three points: 1) what are the characteristics and requirements of organ models in different application scenarios, 2) how to choose the suitable 3D printing methods and materials according to different application categories, and 3) how to reduce the cost of organ models and make the process simple and convenient. Moreover, the state-of-the-art in organ models are summarized and the contribution of 3D printed organ models to various surgical procedures is highlighted. Finally, current limitations, evaluation criteria and future perspectives for this emerging area are discussed.</p>

This review provides an overview of the current state, challenges, and future prospects of organ bioprinting technology. We discuss the principles, techniques, and biomaterials utilized in organ bioprinting, emphasizing the importance of achieving biocompatibility, structural integrity, and functionality in printed constructs. Key advancements, such as multi-material bioprinting, vascularization strategies, and integration with biomanufacturing technologies, are highlighted. Additionally, we explore the role of artificial intelligence and computational modeling in optimizing bioprinting processes and designing patient-specific constructs. Regulatory and ethical considerations, along with case studies of successful organ printing, are examined to contextualize the clinical translation of bioprinted organs. Finally, future perspectives and emerging trends in organ bioprinting, including organ-on-a-chip platforms and AI-driven computational modeling, are discussed. Overall, this review underscores the transformative potential of organ bioprinting in advancing regenerative medicine and personalized healthcare.

Abstract:The shortage of organs for transplantation is a global crisis, with an increasing demand and an inadequate supply of organ donors. The convergence of biology and engineering has led to the emergence of 3D bioprinting, which enables the precise and customizable construction of biological structures. Various 3D bioprinting techniques include inkjet printing, extrusion printing, and laser-assisted bioprinting (LAB). Although it has the potential for many benefits, 3D bioprinting comes with its own set of challenges and requirements, specifically associated with the bioprinting of various tissues. The challenges of bioprinting include issues with cells, bioinks, and bioprinters, as well as ethical concerns, clinical efficacy, and cost-effectiveness, making it difficult to integrate 3D bioprinting into widespread clinical practice. Three-dimensional bioprinting holds great promise in addressing the organ shortage crisis, and its applications extend beyond organ transplantation to include drug screening, disease modeling, and regenerative medicine. However, further research is needed to overcome the technical, biological, and ethical challenges associated with 3D bioprinting, paving the way for its widespread clinical implementation. This article discusses the processes and challenges of bioprinting as well as the current research direction in the field.
