Abstract:In this article, we have conducted a comprehensive study on the structural, mechanical, electronic, magnetic and thermodynamic properties of the Heusler alloys FeZrTiZ ( ). Our investigation utilize the GGA exchange correlational approximation functional. The results of our analysis indicate that among the Y1-, Y2- and Y3-type structures, the Y1-type structure exhibits stability and demonstrates ferromagnetic behavior. Furthermore, mechanical property analysis reveals that all alloys possess ductile characteristics. The analysis of the density of states of the Heusler alloys FeZrTiZ ( ) demonstrates the presence of half-metallic nature in all of the alloys. Additionally, the investigated Heusler alloys exhibit integer spin magnetic moments. To study thermodynamic properties, we use quasi-harmonic approximation, which allows to analyze specific heat capacity, thermal expansion, Debye temperature, vibrational free energy, internal energy and entropy of the Heusler alloys FeZrTiZ ( ). Overall, our findings provide a clear understanding of the structural, mechanical, electronic, magnetic and thermodynamic characteristics of Heusler alloys FeZrTiZ ( ), shedding light on their potential applications in spintronics.

Abstract:Physical characteristics of quaternary Heusler alloys (QHAs) FeNbYZ (Z = Al, Ga, In, Sn) are determined using full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method within the framework of density functional theory (DFT) by implying generalized gradient approximation (GGA) and Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) exchange potential. First of all, structural stability is investigated to find the most optimized structure. The geometry optimization results indicated that the third type has the most stable structure among other two types along with ferromagnetic (FM) phase stability. The calculated band structures (BS) and density of states (DOS) indicated that these QHAs are half metals (HMs) having bang gap at only spin down channel. The computed magnetic moments (MMs) of FeNbYAl, FeNbYGa, FeNbYSn and FeNbYIn are compared with the MMs that obtained from Slater Pauling rule (SPR). These materials being totally spin polarization (SP) (i.e., 100%) had high Curie temperature (T c ) and high MM showing them half metallic nature and good to be used in useful applications. The mechanical stability is determined by computing elastic constants, bulk modulus, Young modulus, hardness, and Poisson ratio. The findings of mechanical attributes deduce that all investigated QHAs are ductile and had Pugh's ratio > 1.75 making these materials mechanically stable. Furthermore, the calculations of thermoelectric properties have shown that these alloys could be utilized as thermoelectric in addition to spintronics.

Equiatomic quaternary Heusler alloys: a material perspective for spintronic applications

Abstract:Half-metallic ferromagnetic (HMF) materials show high spin polarization and are therefore interesting to researchers due to their possible applications in spintronic devices. In these materials, while one spin sub band has a finite density of states at the Fermi level, the other sub band has a gap. Because of their high Curie temperature and tunable electronic structure, HMF Heusler alloys have a special importance among the HMF materials. Full Heusler alloys with the stoichiometric composition X2YZ (where X and Y are the transition metals and Z is a sp element) have the cubic structure with four interpenetrating fcc sublattices. When each of these four fcc sublattices is occupied by different atoms, a quaternary Heusler structure with different structural symmetry is obtained. Recently, these equiatomic quaternary Heusler alloys (EQHAs) with 1:1:1:1 stoichiometry have attracted a lot of attention due to their superior magnetic and transport properties.

Abstract:In this paper, we have studied the structural, mechanical, electronic, magnetic and thermodynamical properties of the Heusler alloys CoNbTiX ( ). We used full potential linearized augmented plane wave method based on density functional theory. We analysed and compared the various properties using both GGA and TB-mBJ XC functionals. Our analysis shows that among all the Y1, Y2 and Y3-type structures, Y1-structure is more stable and having ferromagnetic property. Also, the mechanical property analysis reveals that all the alloys are ductile in nature. The density of states of Heusler alloys CoNbTiX ( ) shows that in all the alloys the spin up channel having metallic and spin down channel having semi-conducting property. All the Heusler alloys under investigation having the integer spin magnetic moment and the values are concurrence with the Slater - Pauling rule. The thermodynamic properties of the Heusler alloys CoNbTiX ( ) like specific heat capacity, thermal expansion, Debye temperature, vibrational free energy, internal energy and entropy are studied using quasi-harmonic approximation.

Abstract:We have investigated the structural, mechanical, thermal, electronic, magnetic, and half-metallic properties of new Yb-based EQHAs such as YbCoCrSb and YbCoTiSn using first-principles calculations. We computed the ground state properties of different possible crystal structures and magnetic states. We also calculated their elastic constants and derived mechanical parameters, including bulk, shear, and Young's moduli, as well as Poisson's and Pugh ratios. The electronic structure of both EQHAs shows half-metallic behavior with a spin down band gap of 0.39 eV for YbCoCrSb and 0.30 eV for YbCoTiSn in the GGA-PBE scheme. The estimated total spin magnetic moment has a positive integer value, which is well in accordance with the Slater-Pauling rule of 18. Because of the nearly closed f orbital shell of the Yb atom, the total spin magnetic moment is mainly dependent on 3d transition metal atoms. These alloys exhibit TC > 300 K using the mean field approximation. Abstract:Utilizing the density functional theory (DFT) method, this study aims to predict with precision the structural, elastic, electronic, magnetic, thermoelectric, thermal, and optical properties of two recently discovered half-Heusler alloys, namely RbCrSi and RbCrGe. The exchange and correlation potential are accounted for using the generalized gradient approximation of Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof (GGA-PBE) and the Tran–Blaha-modified Becke–Johnson exchange potential (TB-mBJ). Through structural analysis, it is observed that both RbCrSi and RbCrGe alloys exhibit energetic stability in a type-3 structure with a ferromagnetic (FM) state. Both alloys exhibit half-metallic properties and integer magnetic moments of 3 μB, following the Slater-Pauli rule. Additionally, elastic calculations confirm their mechanical stability and anisotropic ductile behavior. The quasi-harmonic Debye model (QHDM) is employed for calculating thermodynamic properties, while the BoltzTraP code, based on semi-classical Boltzmann theory (SCBT), is utilized for evaluating thermoelectric properties. Findings reveal that RbCrZ alloys (with Z = Si, Ge) exhibit high figure of merit (ZT) values nearing unity at highest temperature. Consequently, the newfound half-Heusler alloys RbCrSi and RbCrGe hold significant promise for applications in thermoelectricity and spintronic devices. This comprehensive analysis underscores the potential of these alloys in the realm of renewable energy applications.

Abstract:The density functional theory was employed to explore the structural, electronic, magnetic, optical, and thermoelectric properties of full Heusler alloys Rh 2 FeZ (Z = Al, Ga, In). The structural properties of the alloys were investigated, and it was found that the Rh 2 FeZ (Z = Al, Ga, In) alloys ferromagnetically stable in the Cu 2 MnAl type crystal structure. The dynamic stability was also evaluated using the phonon dispersion curve.The exchange correlation potential has been approximated using GGA and GGA + U methods. The electronic structure, density of states and magnetism for the GGA + U method show that all of these alloys are indirect band gap semiconductor with half metallic ferromagnetic character.The total magnetic moment values of these alloys in GGA + U satisfy the Slater-Pauling (SP) rule. The dielectric function, refractive indices, and energy loss function are all calculated optical properties. The Seebeck coefficients, electrical, thermal, and power factor as a function of temperature are calculated using the semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory to understand their thermoelectric properties. All of these results imply that full Heusler alloys composed of Rh 2 FeAl, Rh 2 FeGa, and Rh 2 FeIn would be good for spintronic and thermoelectric device applications.

Abstract:In this paper, structural stability of YX′CrZ (X′ = Fe, Co, Ni; Z = Si, Ge, Sn) quaternary Heusler alloys are analysed. The structure stability is analysed among three different phases namely α, β, and γ phases of F-43m crystal structure. It is predicted that γ-phase is the lowest energy phase for YFeCrSi, YFeCrGe, YFeCrSn, YCoCrSi, YCoCrGe, YCoCrSn, YNiCrSi, and YNiCrSn and β-phase for YNiCrGe. The strong hybridization of the states of 3d-Fe, 3d-Co, and 3d-Ni observed in density of states plot leads to half metallicity in YX′CrZ (X′ = Fe, Co ; Z = Si, Ge, Sn) at normal pressure. All these quaternary alloys are ferromagnetic at normal pressure. These alloys are found to be mechanically stable.

Abstract:Using electronic structure calculations based on density functional theory, we predict and study the structural, mechanical, electronic, magnetic and transport properties of a new full Heusler chalcogenide, namely, Fe$_2$CrTe, both in bulk and heterostructure form. The system shows a ferromagnetic and half-metallic(HM) like behavior, with a very high (about 95%) spin polarization at the Fermi level, in its cubic phase. Interestingly, under tetragonal distortion, a clear minimum (with almost the same energy as the cubic phase) has also been found, at a c/a value of 1.26, which, however, shows a ferrimagnetic and fully metallic nature. The compound has been found to be dynamically stable in both the phases against the lattice vibration. The elastic properties indicate that the compound is mechanically stable in both the phases, following the stability criteria of the cubic and tetragonal phases. The elastic parameters unveil the mechanically anisotropic and ductile nature of the alloy system. Due to the HM-like behavior of the cubic phase and keeping in mind the practical aspects, we probe the effect of strain as well as substrate on various physical properties of this alloy. Transmission profile of the Fe$_2$CrTe/MgO/Fe$_2$CrTe heterojunction has been calculated to probe it as a magnetic tunneling junction (MTJ) material in both the cubic and tetragonal phases. Considerably large tunneling magnetoresistance ratio (TMR) of 1000% is observed for the tetragonal phase, which is found to be one order of magnitude larger than that of the cubic phase.

Abstract:Like full or half-heusler materials, equiatomic quaternary Heuslers (EQH) also display various intriguing physical properties. We carried out the strict and rigorous density functional theory calculations to estimate the stability of novel ferrimagnetic FeMnTaAl alloy. In this work, we considered the thermodynamic, energetic, dynamic and mechanical stability criteria, by evaluating the formation energy, phonon dispersion and elastic constants, respectively, which thereby suggest that the synthesis of FeMnTaAl as bulk phase is likely. Later, the electronic structure, magnetic and transport properties are determined from the ground state parameters. After the structural optimizations, the half-metallic character from spin resolved band structures and local spin moments (1 μB) potentially felicitate its spintronic applications. Conservative estimates of Seebeck coefficient (~85 μV/K at 900 K), lattice thermal conductivity (2.8 W/mK at 300 K) and figure of merit (0.03 at 900 K) have also been put forward in this report. The overall structural stability, ferrimagnetism with large TC accompanied by transport properties will possibly enact the experimental realization for magnetic, thermoelectric or spintronic impressions of this material in future.

Abstract:The structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of novel half-Heusler alloys ScXGe (X = Mn, Fe) are investigated using the first principle full potential linearized augmented plane wave approach based on density functional theory (DFT). To attain the desired outcomes, we employed the exchange–correlation frameworks, specifically the local density approximation in combination with Perdew, Burke, and Ernzerhof's generalized gradient approximation plus the Hubbard U parameter method (GGA + U ) to highlight the strong exchange–correlation interaction in these alloys. The structural parameter optimizations, whether ferromagnetic (FM) or nonmagnetic (NM), reveal that all ScXGe (where X = Mn, Fe) Heusler alloys attain their lowest ground state energy during FM optimization. The examination of the electronic properties of these alloys reveals their metallic character in both the spin-up and spin-down channels. The projected densities of states indicate that bonding is achieved through the hybridization of p–d and d–d states in all of the compounds. The investigation of the magnetic properties in ScXGe (where X = Mn, Fe) compounds indicates pronounced stability in their ferromagnetic state. Notably, the Curie temperatures for ScXGe (X = Mn, Fe) are determined to be 2177.02 K and 1656.09 K, respectively. The observation of metallic behavior and the strong ferromagnetic characteristics in ScXGe (X = Mn, Fe) half-Heusler alloys underscores their potential significance in the realm of spintronic devices. Consequently, our study serves as a robust foundation for subsequent experimental validation.

Thermodynamic and Thermoelectric Properties of CoFeYGe (Y= Ti, Cr) Quaternary Heusler Alloys: First Principle Calculations

Abstract:Utilizing a material in thermoelectric applications requires a mechanical, thermal, and lattice stability as well a high figure of merit (ZT). In this work, we present the structural, electronic, magnetic, mechanical, thermodynamic, dynamic, and thermoelectric properties of CoFeYGe (Y = Ti, Cr) quaternary Heusler compounds using the density functional theory (DFT). The calculated mechanical properties and phonon dispersions reveal that the structures of these compounds are stable. Both CoFeCrGe and CoFeTiGe compounds show a ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic half-metallic behavior with band gaps of 0.41 and 0.38 eV, respectively. The lattice thermal conductivity (\k{appa}L) exhibits low values that reach 3.01 W/(m.K) (3.47 W/(m.K)) for CoFeCrGe (CoFeTiGe) at 1100 K. The optical phonon modes have a large contribution of 60.2% (70.9 %) to \k{appa}L value for CoFeCrGe (CoFeTiGe). High ZT values of 0.71 and 0.65 were obtained for CoFeCrGe and CoFeTiGe, respectively. Based on our calculations, CoFeCrGe and CoFeTiGe combine both good spintronic and thermoelectric behaviors that may be used in spin injection applications.

Abstract:In this work, we study the equiatomic quaternary Heusler Alloy CoFeCrP using two methods: DFT and Monte Carlo simulations. The DFT method allowed us to illustrate the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of this alloy. The ground state phase diagrams have been presented to show the stable configurations in different physical parameter planes. On the other hand, the Monte Carlo simulations, performed under the Metropolis algorithm, permitted to deduce the critical the behavior of the equiatomic quaternary Heusler alloy CoFeCrP. The structural properties results show that the phase of type I, of this alloy is the most stable configuration. In addition, the band structures, and density of states calculations results show that this compound exhibits a half-metallic character with a 100 % of spin polarization (SP) at the Fermi-level. The total magnetic moment of the Heusler compound is found to be 4.00 mu_B. Moreover, it is found that the Slater-Pauling is well described for this alloy. Our results show that this material is a potential candidate for the spintronic applications. This is due to its half-metallicity, its high spin moments, its complete SP polarization and its high Curie temperature.

Abstract:First-principles calculations were employed to investigate the structural, phonon, electronic, and magnetic properties of newly designed quaternary Heusler compounds (TiHfPtZ; where Z = Al,Ga,In) for spintronics applications. The phonon dispersion reveals that new quaternary heusler compounds are dynamically stable. Density of states and band structure plots of TiHfPtZ ( Z = Al,Ga In) compounds shows the half-metallic nature with indirect energy band gaps 1.07 eV, 0.92 eV and 0.99 eV at the Fermi level in spin down channel respectively. Each system displays a magnetic moment of 3μB, which favors the half-metallic ferromagnetism and follows the Slater Pauling rule Mt = At -24 (Mt: total magnetic moment and At: total number of valence electrons). Moreover, Curie temperature was determined in each cell is 566 K.

Abstract:Calculations using density functional theory (DFT) were performed to investigate the structural, dynamical, mechanical, electronic, magnetic, and thermoelectric properties of VTiRhZ (Z = Al, Ga, In) alloys. The most stable structure of these alloys was found to be the type-I configuration. Using GGA-PBE functional, VTiRhGa, and VTiRhIn alloys are predicted as half-metallic ferromagnets with a 100% spin-polarization and a total magnetic moment of 3{\mu}B, which is promising for spintronic applications. The thermoelectric properties and lattice thermal conductivity of VTiRhZ alloys were obtained using the Boltzmann transport theory within the constant relaxation time and Slack equation, respectively. The figure-of-merit (ZT) values of VTiRhAl, VTiRhGa, and VTiRhIn alloys were found to be 0.96, 0.88 and 0.64, respectively, which are promising for future thermoelectric applications.

Abstract:This study employs density functional theory (DFT) using Wien2k to comprehensively analyze the essential properties of two half-Heusler alloys, KCrSi and KCrGe. Our findings demonstrate that the ferromagnetic Type 2 configuration exhibits superior stability over non-magnetic and antiferromagnetic states for all KCrZ (Z = Si, Ge) alloys. These alloys exhibit complete spin polarization and half-metallic character, with calculated magnetic moments of 3 μB for both KCrSi and KCrGe. The Curie temperature (T C ) is determined using the mean field approximation. Mechanical stability is assessed through second-order elastic constants (SOECs), and electronic properties are analyzed using local spin density approximation (LSDA), Perdew-Burke Generalized Gradient Approximation (PBE-GGA), and Tran-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson (TB-mBJ) schemes, confirming the retention of the half-metallic nature. The negative enthalpy of formation (ΔH) suggests material stability. The use of semi-classical Boltzmann theory, incorporated through the sophisticated scheme of BoltzTraP, explores transport coefficients. High pressures and temperature discrepancies in thermodynamics are considered by implementing the quasi-harmonic Debye approximation to illustrate stability. Finally, optical properties are summarized to assess the applicability of this alloy for optoelectronic applications. The overall characteristics of these particular alloys suggest potential applications in sustainable thermoelectric and optoelectronic features.

High spin polarization in quaternary Heusler Fe–Rh–Mn–Al alloys

Abstract:In this theoretical study, we investigate novel quaternary Heusler Fe–Rh–Mn–Al alloys in the X-type structure with different types of atomic ordering in the unit cell within the spin-polarized density functional calculations. The calculations showed that the 24 possible configurations converge to the 6 nonequivalent solutions. Two types of atomic ordering with the lowest total energy Fe(4c)Rh(4d)Al(4b)Mn(4a) and Mn(4c)Al(4d)Fe(4b)Rh(4a) are half-metallic ferrimagnets in which the spin polarization at the Fermi level is close to 100 %. However, no gap is open in the majority spin projection. The following values of the total magnetic moments for these alloys were obtained: 3.01 and 3.19 μ B /f.u., respectively. In the other types of atomic order, the half-metallic state is not formed. In FeAlRhMn, the magnetic moment on the manganese ion compensates for the moments on the other ions, and the total moment is close to zero. In the types (MnFeRhAl, AlRhFeMn) of atomic ordering with high energies, the metallic state is also realized, and the magnetic moments on the ions are ordered ferrimagnetically. In this work, we analyzed novel quaternary alloys with different types of atomic ordering motivated by the demand for alloys with a high spin polarization, among which the FeRhAlMn and MnAlFeRh alloys were found. Both with a half-metallic ferrimagnetic state and the lowest total energy among these alloys with the same chemical composition, which indicates the stability of the half-metallic state. The other types of atomic ordering are less energetically favorable, those alloys are ferrimagnetic metals with the low spin polarization. Taking into account the half-metallic state and high spin polarization, the quaternary FeRhAlMn and MnAlFeRh alloys have prospects for use in spintronics devices.

Abstract:In this study, we investigate the structural, electronic, magnetic and mechanical properties of the Na-based half-Heusler alloys XYZ composed of X=Na ( atom); Y=K, Rb, Cs ( atoms) and a main body sp atom Z=C, Si, Ge, Sn, Pb by using the DFT based full-potential WIEN2k package. We compare the total energy vs volume of ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and non-magnetic half-Heusler structures to obtain the stable magnetic structure. Calculations show that compounds are stable in the half-Heusler -phase and the ferromagnetic state. From 15 alloys under study, 13 of them showed half-metallic behavior in the minimum-energy half-Heusler phase at the optimized lattice constant. We show that all compounds have the same total magnetic moment equal to . The band structure and the density of states of half-Heusler alloys are obtained. The elastic constants , and of the single crystal and the related elastic moduli G, B, E, of the polycrystalline aggregates are also calculated and used to study the mechanical stability of these alloys. Furthermore, the average, transverse, longitudinal sound velocities and the Debye temperature for these compounds are calculated. Finally, the Curie temperatures of the half-Heusler alloys are estimated by using the mean field approximation. The estimated Curie temperatures shows that these compounds preserve the ferromagnetic state and magnetic polarization at temperatures much higher than the room temperature and may be suitable for spintronic applications.
