Abstract:In the present research, the behavior of hot deformation and microstructural evolution of ATI425 titanium alloy with initial martensitic microstructure in α/β and β region at temperatures of 700–1100 °C and strain rates of 0.001–1 s−1 were investigated. In the β phase at all temperatures and strain rates, flow curves increase rapidly and then reach stability. The main factor of flow stability in the β phase is dynamic recovery and partial dynamic recrystallization. In the α/β region at low temperatures, the flow curve decreases after a rapid increase. But when the temperature reaches close to the beta transformation, at strain rates lower than 0.01 s−1, the curves reach flow stability. The microstructure modification at temperatures of 700 °C and 800 °C involves the formation of alpha grain string and finally the formation of globularized alpha. At 900 °C, the first stage of microstructure evolution is α´ phase decomposition and the subsequent formation of globularized alpha is similar to that occurred at low-temperatures. In the single-phase β region, the dynamic recovery and dynamic recrystallization have occurred at low- and high-strain rates. The volume fraction of dynamic recrystallization increases with increasing temperature and decreasing strain rate. The activation energy for the ATI425 alloy was calculated to be 403.23 kJ /mol and 201.04 kJ /mol in the α/β and β regions, respectively. The higher activation energy implies that dynamic recrystallization is the main mechanism operating in the α–β phase region. The processing map showed regions with a power dissipation coefficient of more than 40% with maximum workability, between 30 and 40%, and less than 30% of the region with low workability or instability region, respectively.Graphical abstractHot deformation behavior and microstructure evolution of two-phase titanium alloy (Ti–3.75Al–2.53V–1.76Fe–0.25O) with primary martensitic microstructures in the α/β phase range at 700–900 °C and strain rates 0.001–1 s−1 was evaluated. The effect of thermomechanical parameters on both stress–strain curves and microstructure evolution was analyzed.
