Abstract:Carbon footprint (CF) stands for a professional term is widely used in the public domain to cope with the threat posed by climate change. With obtained 9848 records of literature information from the database of Web of Science, a bibliometric analysis was implemented to judge the knowledge domain structure and evolution of frontiers in CF research by using the CiteSpace to make up for the lack of previous reviews. The results showed that the CF research was concentrated in the fields of Engineering, Environmental sciences ecology, Science technology other topics, Energy fuels, Computer science and Business economics, and there is a significant cooperative relationship between researchers, especially those with a high volume of publications. The regional layout of intercontinental CF research forces was Europe, North America, and Asia, while that between countries were the United States of America, China, England, Australia and Italy, specifically, the Chinese Academy of Sciences showed the core force of CF research with a high volume of publications and strong cooperation with international institutions. The debate and application of CF accounting method, Case Studies of CF for livestock and its products production, CF estimation for the final consumption of goods and services, Impact of human food consumption on the climate change, Application of Footprint Family for sustainable development, and CF estimation for household consumption and its drivers were the emerging CF research fronts in historical evolution. Therefore, the CF research has its own characteristics in terms of spatial and temporal layout, cooperation intensity and knowledge hierarchy, and the related topics of cross-application of agriculture and energy are becoming the potential frontier of future research. This work not only provides the possible innovative directions, but also a reliable reference for the rapid and comprehensive understanding of CF research for the novices.

Research trends and hotspots related to global carbon footprint based on bibliometric analysis: 2007-2018

Abstract:As an important indicator of greenhouse gas emissions, the carbon footprint (CF) has become increasingly important in recent years under the dual pressures of global warming and international commitments to mitigate its effects. This study collected 3698 papers related to CF from the Web of Science database as research samples (year 2007 to 2018). Based on CiteSpace, the knowledge base, popular topics, and research trends of CF are presented. The results show the following: (1) from 2007 to 2018, the number of articles on CF have steadily increased. (2) After spatial analysis of the literature, we found that among research institutions, the Chinese Academy of Sciences has the largest number of publications on the issue. When it comes to country, three important research forces can be identified: USA, China, and UK. (3) Research on the CF is interdisciplinary; in addition to the traditional fields of environmental, political, economics, and computing, CF research has received attention from the Physics, Materials, Chemistry, Mathematics, and animal sciences. (4) Through keyword clustering, currently popular topics in research can be roughly divided into four aspects: CF calculation methods, research scales, energy, and agriculture. (5) The CF research during the study period is divided into four stages according to the burst time and content of the burst keywords. According to the research status and trend, this paper puts forward the future research direction of carbon footprint.

Abstract:The number of publications on environmental footprint indicators has been growing rapidly, but with limited efforts to integrate different footprints into a coherent framework. Such integration is important for comprehensive understanding of environmental issues, policy formulation and assessment of trade-offs between different environmental concerns. Here, we systematize published footprint studies and define a family of footprints that can be used for the assessment of environmental sustainability. We identify overlaps between different footprints and analyse how they relate to the nine planetary boundaries and visualize the crucial information they provide for local and planetary sustainability. In addition, we assess how the footprint family delivers on measuring progress towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), considering its ability to quantify environmental pressures along the supply chain and relating them to the water-energy-food-ecosystem (WEFE) nexus and ecosystem services. We argue that the footprint family is a flexible framework where particular members can be included or excluded according to the context or area of concern. Abstract:Carbon footprint (CF) research has attained tremendous popularity for improving the climate environment purposes. In particular, current energy use has been identified as the main cause of climate change. CF plays an irreplaceable role in managing energy use, reducing gas emissions, and improving climate change. The objective of this study was to review studies that have developed CF and to perform a bibliometric analysis using two key terms: "climate change" and "energy use". From bibliometric analysis using CiteSpace and VOSviewer, it was possible to establish a knowledge map of cooperative network structure and research evolution. We are aiming to reveal the main logical chain of CF research leading to climate change, to make up for the lack of current literature, and provide research inspiration for researchers. The research findings mainly focus on four aspects. First, the relevant research began in 2008 and is in a state of continuous rise. Second, due to the law of research development and the prominence of practical problems, related research has experienced a stage from conceptual methods to specific problems. Third, China and the USA assume an important role in which international cooperation is the overall trend. Fourth, related research can be divided into CF algorithm research, ecological environment management research, and specific cross-industry fields. In addition, possible opportunities for change in related research are explored. It is also suggested that the integration of CF with other footprints, when energy use and environmental change are fully considered, may become an important future research trend by providing a more comprehensive environmental impact.

This paper introduces the concepts of “carbon footprint” and “carbon footprint calculator” by reviewing relevant library and information science literature.

Abstract:The issue of the environment continues to receive special attention from researchers. This is related to business operations' importance in paying attention to the profit aspect and environmental impacts to maintain the surrounding environment. Therefore, activities that affect carbon emissions must be reported annually. This is called carbon accounting. This study aims to map carbon accounting articles for 2012 to 2021 on the dimensions.ai database. Using the keyword 'carbon accounting', the collected data was 500 articles. The study results found that the journal most relevant to carbon accounting is 'The Science of the Total Environment'. Meanwhile, the journals that have the most significant impact are 'Global Change Biology', 'Scientific Reports', and 'The Science of the Total Environment'. Meanwhile, the most productive journal is 'The Science of the Total Environment', followed by 'Environmental Science and Pollution Research'. The most relevant and prolific authors were Wang Y, followed by Zhang Y and Zhang X. In addition, Wang Y and Zhang X were the authors who had the greatest impact. The distribution of words in articles with the theme of carbon accounting is dominated by 'carbon' and 'accounting'. This research shows that the theme is undergoing good development. Research data shows that the word 'carbon' is rapidly from 2012 to 2021. This study predicts that articles on carbon accounting will continue to increase in the years to come, especially the themes of 'emissions' and 'study' which have high development although their relevance is quite low. The development of research on carbon accounting is closely related to environmental issues which are currently being studied by many researchers, especially to achieve sustainable development goals.

Abstract:The concept of carbon footprint provides new perspective on impact of human activities on climate change.In this paper we investigate the definitions and accounting methods of carbon footprint by reviewing related studies.A widely accepted definition of carbon footprint does not exist.After analyzing units,scope of emissions and system boundaries about carbon footprint in existing literatures,we propose a definition.A widely accepted method for accounting carbon footprint does not exist either.Instead,three methods are frequently used to calculate carbon footprint separately,that is input-output analysis,life cycle assessment,and hybrid LCA.We analyze theories,scopes of application,advantages and disadvantages,and applications of these three methods.Finally,we suggest some research areas of carbon footprint,which are related to methods,applications and uncertainty.

Abstract:Ever-increasing energy demands pose huge environmental challenges globally. The strategies and methods that are chosen to address the energy crisis will, in part, determine the possibility of fulfilling the 1.5-degree global warming target set by the Paris Agreement, and of achieving the United Nations Sustainable Developmental Goals, two vital and ambitious objectives for humans in the coming decades. While numerous inventory and modelling approaches have been developed to evaluate direct and indirect energy requirements at multiple scales from industries to cities and to the global economy, a discussion on their implications for environmental sustainability is long overdue. In this study, we provide an overview of the research paradigm and the important approaches that have been developed to address energy sustainability and review the papers included in this Special Issue, which are representative of some of the major advancements in energy, carbon, and other hybrid footprint approaches. This Special Issue aims to gather and harmonize state-of-the-art energy accounting frameworks, models, and metrics that benefit the promotion of global sustainability.

Abstract:Although accounting functions have been expanded from traditional practices to recent practices, focusing on environmental, social, and governance issues, there is still a shortcoming in conceiving different approaches to creating organizational and human interaction with the environment. In this study, we review the existing research on carbon accounting from 1994 to July 2022 in order to examine its intellectual development and make recommendations for future studies. This study also discusses the scales, methodological choices, and major themes of carbon accounting research, including the most influential articles and top contributing countries, journals, theories, and institutions. The literature was retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases, in which 137 articles were obtained from 62 high-quality journals in accounting, environment, and economics. There has been a significant increase in recent years in the number of studies, with the majority taking place in the United Kingdom, Australia, and China, as compared to the United States. On the other hand, the results show that traditional theories, such as the theory of legitimacy, the theory of organization, and the theory of stakeholders, have been evaluated previously. Although a firm's characteristics and consumer behavior play an important role in improving carbon efficiency, economic and behavioral theories have been underrepresented in the existing literature. Furthermore, it is found that carbon accounting research provides a mechanism through which carbon emissions can be measured and quantified and helps in knowing the emissions status of companies and making the necessary strategic decisions to achieve mitigation. Therefore, policymakers have to foster setting international standards that would compile firms to report their carbon strategies similar to the international financial reporting standards, allowing investors to verify and compare firms that perform well in terms of carbon reduction.

Abstract:Resolving regional carbon budgets is critical for informing land-based mitigation policy. For nine regions covering nearly the globe, we collected inventory estimates of carbon stock changes complemented by satellite estimates of biomass changes where inventory data are missing. The net land-atmospheric carbon exchange (NEE) was calculated by taking the sum of carbon stock change and lateral carbon fluxes from crop and wood trade and riverine carbon export to the ocean. Summing up NEE from all regions, we obtained a global ‘bottom-up’ NEE for net land anthropogenic CO2 uptake of -2.2 ± 0.6 PgC yr -1 consistent with the independent top-down NEE from the global atmospheric carbon budget during 2000-2009. This estimate is so far the most comprehensive global bottom-up carbon budget accounting, which set up an important milestone for global carbon cycle studies. By decomposing NEE into component fluxes, we found that global soil heterotrophic respiration (SHR) amounts to a source of CO2 of 39 PgC yr -1 with an inter-quartile of 33 to 46 PgC yr, a much smaller portion of Net Primary Productivity than previously reported.

Abstract:AbstractIn the last couple of years, the expression ‘carbon footprint’ has been in use among meteorologist, especially in the United Kingdom. The usage of the expression is not unconnected with the fact that the challenge of climate change has been one of the topmost issues on political as well as corporate agenda. Therefore, calculations of carbon footprint have been in high demand. Scholars have proposed so many approaches to providing estimates. The methods runs from uncomplicated online calculations to other ones like complex life-cycle examination otherwise called input-output-based technique and tools. In spite of its ever-present use, it is clear that the term ‘carbon footprint’ does not have a generally acceptable academic definition. Thus, there is a dearth of clarifications of what ‘carbon footprint’ is in the scientific literature despite the fact that there are several studies or researches on energy as well as ecological economics which should have measured what precisely ‘carbon footprint’ is. Therefore, this particular paper is an attempt to explore the obvious inconsistency in the use of some terminology in both public and in the academic contexts. This has led to a suggestion of academic definitions based on generally accepted principles of accounting and modeling approaches. The paper treats questions of methodology like comprehensiveness, completeness, system boundaries, as well as units, also, the durability of most indicator.

Abstract:This paper provides an overview of carbon accounting as a rapidly developing area of sustainability management and this special issue. The global nature of greenhouse gas emissions as well as increasing climate change impacts is a context that demands new, more holistic approaches to preventing and reducing the negative impacts of climate change. This requires improved ways to anticipate and to fulfil new information requirements and to provide guidance on how to use the evolving accounting approaches for transparency, accountability and decision-making in governments, companies, academia and in non-profit organizations. Different types of carbon accounts – scientific, political, economic and corporate, are evolving. They are related but are not properly interlinked in policy or strategic. On the corporate level, carbon accounting can support carbon management with two basic approaches, carbon accounts for un-sustainability and carbon accounting for sustainability improvements. Both approaches play an increasing role for corporate functions such as production, distribution, procurement, supply chain management, innovation, communication, and marketing. Carbon management accounting can support all organizational levels in decision-making, regardless of whether a department is particularly challenged to comply with regulations, to better organize energy and material flows for substantial reduction effects, or is motivated to increase eco-efficiency, product innovation or legitimacy. This paper distinguishes different company-internal areas of application and methods of carbon accounting. To support corporate decision-makers environmental management accounting framework provides a structured overview of methods distinguishing physical and monetary approaches to carbon accounting. With the expanding scope of carbon accounting practices to include supply chains and product life-cycles, researchers are challenged to develop new methods, such as input–output assisted hybrid accounting.

In recent years, related research on this issue has increased, leading to a significant expand in the number of publications. It is necessary to excavate and summarize the current development status and possible future trends of this field based on quantitative methods. To achieve this goal, this paper develops a main path analysis (MPA) of the entire field and three research sub-topics (agriculture, energy fuels, and business economic) based on the 4973 papers extracted from Web of Science (WoS) database. The results show that the CF domain mainly focuses on optimizing the CF calculation methods from a theoretical perspective to improve the accuracy of estimation. Furthermore, scholars engaged in the agricultural research mainly focus on adjusting the life cycle assessment (LCA) model, which has advantage on microlevel CF accounting, according to actual needs to achieve more accurate predictions, while researchers who pay attention to the topic of business economic are committed to improving the input-output model, which is suitable for meso and macro analysis, to enhance accounting accuracy. In general, this article is beneficial for presenting the intellectual structure and knowledge diffusion trajectories of the CF domain from horizontal and vertical perspectives.

Abstract:Greenhouse gas emissions have increased rapidly and global warming is an emerging huge threat to the human society since the industrial revolution.In 2015 the Paris Agreement set a global goal to achieve carbon neutrality in the second half of the century, and more than 130 countries have been committed to this goal.Carbon neutrality is a multi-disciplinary and comprehensive research area involving energy, environment, finance, management, and other disciplines.For example, the research in low-carbon energy transition not only covers related technologies such as renewables and energy storage, carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), etc., but also involves social sciences topics including climate change investment and financing, carbon management, circular economy, etc.At present, there is no one comprehensive journal which can cover the above topics.Although several journals involve some aspects of lowcarbon research, the coverage is quite narrow, mostly focusing on one single discipline such as energy, environmental or policy study.The lack of cross-disciplinary research in the low-carbon area has seriously hindered the rapid development and promotion of net-zero carbon technologies, policies and ideas.In view of this, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Springer Nature jointly launched the journal of Carbon Neutrality in 2021.Focused on low carbon energy, climate change, ecosystem and environmental governance, carbon finance and carbon management, Carbon Neutrality aims to establish itself as a flagship and leading international journal in the field of low carbon, publishing advanced and up-to-date original research and review papers with the highest quality in the area.The journal intends to create a cuttingedge international platform for scientists, engineers, policy makers, and entrepreneurs to exchange scientific and technological knowledge and explore effective carbon

Abstract:The atmosphere is being disturbed by an increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases, resulting in severe global warming and related effects. Each day, more comparable carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere because of industrial processes, transportation, animal activities, lighting, cooking, heating, and illumination. The term "carbon footprint" refers to the number of greenhouse gases that a person, a nation, or an organization emits because of their activities. The methodologies for calculating carbon footprints are still being developed, but they are becoming a vital tool for managing greenhouse gases. This review article discusses the carbon footprint, measurement methods, and other important information. In the future, it is critical to keep developing and enhancing techniques for evaluating the environmental effect, including creating more thorough and consistent systems for computing carbon footprints. To develop a more comprehensive understanding of the environmental impact of human activities, it will also be crucial to consider environmental effects other than greenhouse gas emissions. These actions will ultimately be essential for reducing the impact of climate change and maintaining the health and well-being of our planet.
