Process Integration and Optimization for Sustainability
Abstract:The manufacturing industries are the major source for economic growth of any nation, although it has substantial negative environmental impacts, primarily triggered by different processes parameters. The current study is focused on the sustainability assessment of two cutting fluid strategies, Minimum Quantity Lubrication (MQL) and Ranque-Hilsch Vortex Tube (RHVT) with respect to turning of pure titanium grade II alloy, with an emphasis on sustainable ways of manufacturing. In order to determine the eco-effectiveness of both cutting strategies, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology tool called SimaPro associated with the ReCiPe endpoint impact assessment method was carried out as per ISO 14040 and 14,044 guidelines. The assessment results exhibited that the RHVT cutting strategy was more ecological cutting condition as compared to MQL. There is 3.46% higher negative environmental impact contribution in case of MQL when compared with RHVT. Additionally, the results also showed that different parameter combinations (speed, feed, and depth of cut) have considerable contribution toward the overall environmental burden. The result suggests a favorable cutting fluid method that can increase performance in terms of environmental effect. Also, it was found that the marine ecotoxicity (46.47%), freshwater ecotoxicity (29.78%), human carcinogenic toxicity (16.87%), and human noncarcinogenic toxicity (3.94%) are the major impactful categories.
