Abstract:Polysilazane and platinum were adopted to enhance the thermal stability of silicone rubber. The effect and mechanism of polysilazane and platinum on enhancing thermal stability were investigated via thermogravimetry, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, thermogravimetry-Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. Remarkable synergism between polysilazane and platinum was found in enhancing thermal stability of silicone rubber. When 1.34 wt% polysilazane and 8 ppm platinum were added, the degradation temperatures were elevated. Furthermore, the thermal residues of silicone rubbers were increased from 30–45 to 66–76 wt%, and maximum degradation rates were reduced from 8.81–15.8 to 4.55–5.02 wt%/min. Besides, silicone rubber demonstrated excellent shape retention at high temperature in the presence of polysilazane and platinum. The mechanism may be that platinum cooperated with polysilazane and efficiently catalyzed radical crosslinking between polysilazane and silicone chains. As a result, a tightly crosslinked network was developed, and degradation of silicone rubber was suppressed.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid material used as consolidant for earthen relics was synthesized by adding silica nano particles into polysiloxane with the presence of surfactant. This composite material is less hydrophobic than other polymer consolidant, which can avoid the preservation damage caused by the incompatibility between the hydrophobic consolidant and the hydrophilic soil. The tensile strength of the synthesized consolidant is close to other rubbers, which can relieve the stress between consolidant and soil within the expansion-shrinkage process when environmental conditions change. The product was applied on ancient Liangzhu city wall and its effectiveness was examined.
Synergistically Improving Tracking Resistance of Addition-Cure Liquid Silicone Rubber with Aminepropyltriethoxysilane-Immobilized Silica and Platinum Catalyst

Abstract:The tracking-resistant silicone rubber with superior water resistance is very essential for outdoor high-voltage transmission field. In this work, aminepropyltriethoxysilane-immobilized silica (APTES-SiO 2 ) was prepared through dehydration condensation between the ethoxy groups of aminepropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) and hydroxyl groups on the SiO 2 surface. The effects of APTES-SiO 2 on the vulcanization, mechanical properties, thermal stability and tracking resistance of addition-cure liquid silicone rubber (ALSR) were studied. The results revealed that APTES-SiO 2 and platinum catalyst (Pt) synergistically improved the tracking resistance of ALSR, and APTES-SiO 2 /ALSR also possessed excellent water resistance. When the content of APTES and Pt was 0.15 phr (parts per hundreds of rubber) and 15 ppm (parts per million), respectively, APTES-SiO 2 /ALSR reached 1A4.5 level. Furthermore, the tracking resistance of ALSR showed little deterioration even after immersion in water for 30 days. The results of thermogravimetry (TG) and thermogravimetry-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR) indicated that APTES-SiO 2 and Pt synergistically promoted the radical crosslinking of ALSR chains at high temperature, which was favorable to the formation of compact ceramic protected layer, thus significantly improved the tracking resistance of ALSR.

Abstract:Surface modification of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) by silane coupling agents and the ultraviolet-C (UV-C) aging behavior of silicone rubber (SiR) incorporated with the modified TiO2 NPs were investigated in this work. The SiR samples incorporated with TiO2 NPs displayed excellent stability against the UV-C radiation. In order to improve the dispersion of TiO2 NPs in the SiR matrix, the surface of TiO2 NPs was modified with 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane and 3-trimethoxysilyl propyl methacrylate, respectively. The surface modification of TiO2 NPs was characterized by thermal gravimetric analysis and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The dispersion stability of the pristine TiO2 NPs and surface silane-modified TiO2 NPs was evaluated in an organic solvent (toluene). Effect of surface modified TiO2 NPs on the UV-C aging behavior of SiR was evaluated in terms of the change of surface morphology, tensile properties, hardness, crosslinking density, and surface microstructure before and after the UV-C aging. The results showed that surface modification of TiO2 NPs with silane coupling agents could improve the dispersion of TiO2 NPs in the SiR matrix. Abstract:An addition-cure liquid silicone rubber (ALSR) with ureido-containing MQ silicone resin (U-MTQ) was prepared by hydrosilylation with platinum catalyst (Pt). ALSR samples were characterized by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and thermogravimetry coupled with infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR), and the char layers of ALSR samples after inclined plate tracking and erosion test (IPT) were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effects of Pt content (5–100 ppm) on the curing characteristics, mechanical properties and tracking and erosion resistance of ALSR were investigated. It was found that the cure rate increased with increase of Pt content. When the Pt content was 10 ppm or 15 ppm, the ALSR had excellent tracking and erosion resistance, all specimens could pass the 4.5 kV level in IPT, and the erosion rate was only 0.13% and 0.15%, respectively. ALSR samples possessed optimum mechanical properties and thermal stability when the Pt content was 15 ppm. TG-FTIR results showed that ALSR generated less carbonyl compounds (CH2O) and cyclic oligomers but more methane (CH4) when the Pt content was 15 ppm. This demonstrated that there were lower levels of the oxidation of methyl groups and the main chain unzipping degradation of ALSR, and more homolysis of Si-CH3 during the degradation. The XPS results also showed that the macromolecular radicals would further cross-link to form a firm Si-C ceramic barrier to protect ALSR samples under Pt catalysis and high temperature, thus the tracking and erosion resistance of ALSR could be improved.

Abstract:It is urgent and significant to prepare silicone rubber with excellent tracking resistance in a harsh environment. In this work, alkyl-disubstituted ureido siloxane immobilized on silica (U-SiO2) was prepared by the dehydration condensation of hydrolysates of alkoxy groups in alkyl-disubstituted ureido siloxanes (US) and hydroxyl groups on the silica surface. The effect of U-SiO2 on the tracking resistance of addition-cure liquid silicone rubber (ALSR) was investigated by inclined-plane test (IP test). It was found that U-SiO2 could effectively enhance the tracking resistance of ALSR. Especially, diisopropylureidopropyltriethoxysilane and diisobutylureidopropyltriethoxysilane with isomeric substitution immobilized on silica (DIPUPES-SiO2 and DIBUPES-SiO2) performed the best. With less than 1.00 phr content, ALSR samples could reach 1A4.5 level. The erosion mass was only 0.40 % and 0.62%, respectively. Moreover, ALSR / DIPUPES-SiO2 had excellent water resistance. It could still reach 1A4.5 level and the erosion mass was almost unchanged after ALSR / DIPUPES-SiO2 was immersed in the water for five days. The results of plasma irradiation and thermal treatment showed that U-SiO2 could effectively inhibit the aggregation of platinum in Karstedt's catalyst, which could promote the crosslinking of ALSR chains under the elevated temperature to form a compact ceramic protected layer. It could not only isolate the oxygen and heat and suppress the thermal degradation of ALSR, but also resist the plasma bombardment. Therefore, the tracking resistance of ALSR was remarkably enhanced.

Abstract:Platinum (Pt) catalyst and nitrogen-containing silane (NS) were introduced to improve the thermal stability of silicone rubber. The effects of Pt and NS on thermal stability and degradation mechanism of silicone rubber were investigated by thermogravimetry (TG), thermogravimetry-Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (TG-FTIR), scanning electron microscope-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDXS) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR). A significant synergism was found between Pt and NS for improving the thermal stability of silicone rubber. When 6.67ppm of Pt and 1.4 phr of NS were introduced, the temperature of 10% and 20% weight loss under nitrogen atmosphere were respectively increased by 36°C and 119°C. Meanwhile, the residue weight at 900°C was doubled to 68% in the presence of Pt/NS. The synergistic mechanism might be that the nitrogen atom coordinated with Pt and improved the catalytic efficiency of Pt. Additionally, NS preserved the catalytic activity of Pt under air atmosphere. Hence, Pt/NS efficiently catalyzed thermal crosslinking and suppressed degradation of silicone chains. Moreover, it revealed that the presence of Pt/NS protected silicone chains from oxidation. Thus, the unzipping depolymerization by silanol groups was reduced significantly.

Abstract:To achieve uniform distribution of heteroatoms in silicone rubber, further simultaneously improving the flexibility and ablation resistance, polydimethylsiloxane with an interpenetrating zirconium-containing double-network (Zr-PDMS) was prepared. Compared to pure PDMS, the tensile strength and elongation-at-break of Zr-PDMS with interpenetrating double-network were increased by 615.33% and 124.23%, respectively, exhibiting significantly enhanced flexibility. Ablation analysis indicated that Zr-PDMS showed excellent anti-ablation performance, exhibiting obviously decreased mass ablation rate and charring rate. Most importantly, different from the crisp charred layers of pure PDMS as well as ZrO 2 blends, Zr-PDMS formed stable and coherent charred layers after ablation tests. The improvement correlated to the in-situ formation of tetragonal ZrO 2 in the char layer of Zr-PDMS, which could avoid the generation of defects in the ZrO 2 blends char layer were discussed in detail. This work provided a new strategy of high flexible silicon rubber with excellent ablative performance, which can be expected to be well applied in the hypersonic spacecrafts.

Abstract:In this study, two different pre-polymers were obtained first through efficient hydrosilylation reaction by changing reaction time and catalyst dosage in the presence of polyoxyethylene epoxy resin (DEG-501) and hydrogen silicone oil with phenyl (UC-233), named EH-F and EH-L. And the chemical structure of pre-polymers was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR). Then the pre-polymers were incorporated into phenyl-containing silicone rubber at different mass fractions. Scanning electron microscopy observations demonstrated that a “sea-island” phase separation occurred obviously in the cured composites. Thermogravimetric analysis evaluation revealed that thermal stability of silicone rubber composites improved markedly after modification, the residual yield at 800 °C achieved 32.69% in the air atmosphere when 20 phr EH-F were introduced. And a degradation mechanism was discussed through elemental analysis and electronic images of char of silicone rubber systems. The mechanical properties results showed that tensile strength and shear strength of composites increased gradually with increasing EH pre-polymers. All of these results provide very valuable information for understanding hydrosilylation reaction and effects of molecular structures on performance of silicone rubber systems.

Effects of Zirconium Silicide on the Vulcanization, Mechanical and Ablation Resistance Properties of Ceramifiable Silicone Rubber Composites

Abstract:Ceramifiable silicone rubber composites play important roles in the field of thermal protection systems (TPS) for rocket motor cases due to their advantages. Ceramifiable silicone rubber composites filled with different contents of ZrSi2 were prepared in this paper. The fffects of ZrSi2 on the vulcanization, mechanical and ablation resistance properties of the composites were also investigated. The results showed that the introduction of ZrSi2 decreased the vulcanization time of silicone rubber. FTIR spectra showed that ZrSi2 did not participate in reactions of the functional groups of silicone rubber. With the increasing content of ZrSi2, the tensile strength increased first and then decreased. The elongation at break decreased and the permanent deformation increased gradually. The thermal conductivity of the composite increased from 0.553 W/(m·K) to 0.694 W/(m·K) as the content of the ZrSi2 increased from 0 to 40 phr. In addition, the thermal conductivity of the composite decreased with the increase of temperature. Moreover, thermal analysis showed that the addition of ZrSi2 increased the initial decomposition temperature of the composite, but had little effect on the peak decomposition temperature in nitrogen. However, the thermal decomposition temperature of the composite in air was lower than that in nitrogen. The addition of ZrSi2 decreased the linear and mass ablation rate, which improved the ablative resistance of the composite. With the ZrSi2 content of 30 phr, the linear and mass ablation rate were 0.041 mm/s and 0.029 g/s, decreasing by 57.5% and 46.3% compared with the composite without ZrSi2, respectively. Consequently, the ceramifiable silicone rubber composite filled with ZrSi2 is very promising for TPS.

Abstract:Several new siloxane lubricants were synthesized with linear and ring-shaped branch structures of various lengths and branch contents, aiming at a search for better molecular design for lower boundary friction and more effective surface protection against wear of materials. Their molecular structure and mass were measured by means of nuclear magnetic resonance and gel permeation chromatography, respectively. The new lubricants were compared with commercially available polysiloxanes, poly-α-olefins, and perfluoropolyether in lubricating a steel ball-on-steel disk interface using a tribotester at a load of 1.76 GPa and an entrainment speed of 0.025 m/s. The results are used to explain the effects of alkyl branch length L , pendant type J , percent of branch functional monomers Q , and degree of polymerization DP on siloxane design for the most effective boundary lubrication.

Abstract:Ureido silane is considered to be a novel tracking resistance additive for effectively improving the tracking resistance property of addition-cure liquid silicone rubber (ALSR). In this work, a series of alkyl-disubstituted ureido silanes (ADUSs) with different alkyl chain structures were synthesized by the transetherification of allyl alcohol (AA) and alkyl-disubstituted ureido siloxanes from the nucleophilic addition between alkyl-disubstituted amides and 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane (ICPES). The effect of ADUSs with different alkyl chain structures on the tracking resistance property of ALSR was investigated by inclined plane test (IPT), thermogravimetry analysis (TGA), thermogravimetry-Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (TG-FTIR) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The results showed that ADUSs could effectively improve the tracking resistance property of ALSR, especially for (γ-diisopropylureidopropyl) allyloxyethoxysilane (DIPUPAS), (γ-dibutylureidopropyl) allyloxyethoxysilane (DBUPAS) and (γ-diisobutylureidopropyl) allyloxyethoxysilane (DIBUPAS). ALSR incorporated with DIPUPAS, DBUPAS and DIBUPAS passed the inclined plane test (IPT) at the alternating voltage of 4.5 kV and the average erosion mass was only 3.8%, 3.4% and 4.4% of the virgin ALSR, respectively. TGA and TG-FTIR results revealed that DIPUPAS, DBUPAS and DIBUPAS could also effectively improve the thermal stability of ALSR. Accompanying with the weakened oxidation reactions of methyl groups in molecular chains, the formed cyclic oligomers decreased. Meanwhile, the release of methane and cross-linking reaction of the silicone rubber chains were enhanced, leading to the increase of residue under high temperature and the formation of a ceramic barrier layer to protect the silicone rubber matrix. EDS results showed that the carbon content in ceramic barrier layer decreased, which was beneficial to prohibit the development of tracking.

Abstract:Aiming to improve tracking and erosion resistance performance of addition-cure liquid silicone rubber (ALSR) without alumina trihydrate, A- and B-series ALSR samples with different fumed silica mass fraction and platinum catalyst concentration were prepared respectively. The tracking and erosion resistance performance of all the samples were evaluated. Also, the thermal decomposition products were detected. Basing on the comparative analysis of thermal decomposition characteristics, morphology, crystal structure, the improvement mechanism was discussed. Results showed that increasing the concentration of platinum catalyst and the mass fraction of fumed silica both can improve the tracking and erosion resistance performance, whereas the former was more effectively. Further analysis considered that platinum catalyst played a very important role in thermal decomposition process of ALSR, increasing the platinum catalyst content can not only promote the crosslinking reaction between the methyl groups, but also suppress backbone decomposition.

Abstract:In typical HTV silicone rubber for composite insulators subjected to a 4.5 kV inclined plane (IP) test, alumina trihydrate loading exceeds 40 wt%, which limits the rubber content and weakens the antiaging properties. This study compares two methods for enhancing tracking and erosion resistance while reducing ATH content to meet IP test requirements. Increasing Fe2O3 content from 1.5 wt% to 3 wt% promotes the formation of mullite. The formed ceramic layer isolates heat and oxygen and hence facilitates the specimen to pass the IP tests with less content of ATH. By contrast, Pt/NS system cannot suppress the tracking efficiently by forming the Si-O-C ceramics at high ATH loading. The decomposition of ATH will generate water vapor and lead to holes in the surface. Both moisture and oxygen absorbed have a detrimental effect on the suppression mechanism of the Pt/NS system. Consequently, it is recommended that the content of Fe2O3 can be increased slightly to lower the ATH content in the traditional HTV SiR formula used for the composite insulator. Besides, when the content of ATH is relatively high, the use of the Pt/NS system is not recommended.
Effects of the etching process on the surface, friction and wear characteristics of silicone rubber coated with micro-sized ceramic particles

Abstract:This study investigates the friction and wear characteristics of silicone rubber used in hydraulic systems, focusing on surface properties achieved through coating strategies. Silicone rubber specimens with varying surface characteristics, prepared by coating with micro-sized ceramic particles and employing etching processes, were examined. Surface morphology, roughness, water droplet contact angles, and friction and wear characteristics were evaluated. The silicone rubber was coated with ceramic particles (average size: 16 μm) and subsequently etched for different durations (1, 5, 10, 30, and 60 minutes). The results revealed that longer etching times led to increased surface roughness, while shorter etching times resulted in improved wear characteristics. The friction coefficient demonstrated a discernible reduction with escalating etching durations, with Etching-60M showing approximately 50% lower friction coefficient compared to Etching-1M. Wear rates ranged from 2.47 × 10 −7 to 1.43 × 10 −6 mm 3 N −1 mm −1 , indicating an increasing trend with longer etching times. Distinct wear mechanisms were observed between non-etched and etched specimens, with the latter exhibiting more pronounced wear tracks. Finite element analysis highlighted variations in stress behavior during contact sliding, indicating that surface modifications significantly impact wear resistance. While longer etching times improved friction characteristics, shorter etching times yielded superior wear characteristics. Further research is recommended to explore optimal etching conditions considering various variables.

Abstract:This paper analysed the effect of different white carbon black (fumed silica and precipitated silica) on the mechanics and friction property of silicone rubber. The tensile strength, tearing strength, elongation rate and shore hardness of silicone rubber reinforced with different kinds or dosages of white carbon black were investigated in detail. The wear morphology, worn surface analysis and chemical compositions of the rubber sample after the friction test were analysed by means of scanning electron microscopy, three-dimensional profile metre and energy dispersive spectrometer, respectively. Results showed that the mechanics properties of silicone rubber were obviously enhanced with the increase in white carbon black content. Moreover, after the friction test, the vulcanised rubber reinforced with fumed silica has less wear surface protrusions and grinding than that of precipitated silica. The wear rubber filled with fumed silica surface is quite smooth and shows few furrows and grooves, which well corresponds to good anti-wear ability of the reinforcing fillers. In the course of practical application, it is necessary to take into account of the mechanical properties, wear resistance of rubber and the adding amount of filler to achieve the optimum coordination for the best mechanical and friction properties of silicone rubber.

Abstract:Herein, the influence of platinum (Pt) catalyst on the interface between SiO 2 nanofiller and addition cure silicone rubber (ALSR) matrix is investigated with different concentrations of Pt catalyst. It is found through various tests that Si-O-Si covalent bonds and hydrogen bonds form at the interface with a moderate amount of Pt catalyst. Based on these observations, a model for the interfacial structure of ALSR/SiO 2 nanocomposites is proposed. In particular, it is demonstrated, without changing the mass fraction and surface modifier of the filler, a more compact interface is obtained by increasing the amount of added Pt catalyst by a few ppm, resulting in a 25% increase of breakdown strength, 10% increase in thermal conductivity, 50% increase in tensile strength, and a 31% increase in the elongation at break.

Abstract:How to effectively improve tracking resistance and flame retardancy of silicone rubber is one of the key problems needed to be resolved in the development of high performance silicone rubber insulating materials. In this work, a novel functional silane containing hindered amine and urethane groups, named PPAS, was synthesized by using 1,2,2,6,6-pentamethyl-4-piperidinol, (3-isocyanatopropyl) triethoxysilane and allyl acohol via the nucleophilic substitution and trans-etherification. The effects of PPAS on the tracking resistance, flame retardancy and thermal stability of addition-cure liquid silicone rubber (ALSR) were investigated. It was found that PPAS could effectively enhance the tracking resistance and flame retardancy of ALSR simultaneously. When the content of PPAS was only 3.0 phr, ALSR/PPAS could pass the 1A4.5 kV level in the inclined plane (IP) test and had outstanding electrical erosion resistance, which showed great potential in exterior insulator. In particular, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of the ALSR/PPAS was 30.0%, and it had a good self-extinguishing capability. Meanwhile, the risk of fire measured by cone calorimeter was also significantly reduced. The mechanism for these phenomena were further studied and revealed: PPAS could effectively quench the peroxyl radicals and suppress the oxidation degradation of Si-CH3 groups, eliminate the Si-OH groups and promote the cross-linked reaction during the thermal degradation of ALSR.

Abstract:Dielectric performance of silicone rubber enhanced by metal oxides. Polysiloxane dielectric elastomers have garnered a considerable deal of attention over the last decade due to their potential as electroactive soft materials. However, the intrinsic low dielectric constant of polysiloxanes has proven a serious limitation in their practical use. In this work, we controlled the dielectric properties of silicone rubber composites by changing the type and content of oxide fillers. The silicone‐based dielectric elastomers with a high dielectric constant (5.21@1 kHz), low modulus (1.62 MPa), and high elongation (1100%) were successfully obtained. The effects of different types of metal oxides on the dielectric properties and mechanical properties of the prepared composites are further explored. Due to their excellent comprehensive features, these types of materials are expected to be applied in capacitive sensors, actuators, generators, and beyond.
