Abstract:Chitosan and its modifications have received great attention over the past few decades due to its outstanding adsorption behavior toward various toxic heavy metals from aqueous solutions. In the review, the preparation strategies of modified chitosan (MCS) and its applications have been summarized. The effects of process variables (such as pH, temperature, adsorbent dosage, contact time, and co-existing ions), adsorption kinetics and isotherms, and adsorption mechanism were investigated. Moreover, the process parameters of heavy metal ions onto MCSs were optimized by response surface methodology. Finally, the regeneration of MCSs has been given considerable attention to evaluate their adsorption efficiency, and some dynamic adsorption studies were also discussed. The main objective of this review is to provide up-to-date information about the most important features of chitosan based adsorbents that may be helpful for synthesizing better adsorption property of modified chitosan and promoting its applications for heavy metal contaminate removal.

Abstract:Chitosan has received widespread attention as an adsorbent for pollutants because of its low cost and great adsorption potentials. Chitosan has abundant hydroxyl and amino groups that can bind heavy metal ions. However, it has defects such as sensitivity to pH, low thermal stability, and low mechanical strength, which limit the application of chitosan in wastewater treatment. The functional groups of chitosan can be modified to improve its performance via crosslinking and graft modification. The porosity and specific surface area of chitosan in powder form are not ideal, therefore, physical modification has been attempted to generate chitosan nanoparticles and hydrogel. Chitosan has also been integrated with other materials (e.g. graphene, zeolite) resulting in composite materials with improved adsorption performance. This review mainly focuses on reports about the application of chitosan and its derivatives to remove different heavy metals. The preparation strategy, adsorption mechanism, and factors affecting the adsorption performance of adsorbents for each type of heavy metal are discussed in detail. Recent reports on important organic pollutants (dyes and phenol) removal by chitosan and its derivatives are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:Fe3O4/chitosan magnetic microspheres of 50 to 80 μm were prepared using the inverse phase emulsion dispersion and chemical crosslinking technology, and then modified with ethylenediamine for use in the adsorption of heavy metal ions. The adsorption properties of the modified Fe3O4/chitosan toward Cu2+, Cd2+ and Ni2+ were investigated. It was found that the adsorption capacities of Cu2+ and Ni2+ increased with pH, and a maximum adsorption for Cd2+ occurred at pH=3. The saturated adsorption capacities calculated by Langmuir isotherms were 54.3 mg·g-1 for Cu2+, 20.4 mg·g-1 for Cd2+, and 12.4 mg·g-1 for Ni2+, respectively. The adsorption kinetics were well described by pseudo-second-order equation models. The experimental results showed that the Fe3O4/chitosan modified with ethylenediamine presented higher adsorption selectivity for Cu2+ than for Cd2+ and Ni2+ in all studied pH ranges. © Editorial office of Acta Physico-Chimica Sinica.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution in water bodies is a global concern. The prominent source of metal contamination in aqueous streams and groundwater is wastewater containing heavy metal ions. Elevated concentrations of heavy metals in water bodies can have a negative impact on water quality and public health. The most effective way to remove metal contaminants from drinking water is thought to be adsorption. A deacetylated derivative of chitin, chitosan, has a wide range of commercial uses since it is biocompatible, nontoxic, and biodegradable. Due to its exceptional adsorption behavior toward numerous hazardous heavy metals from aqueous solutions, chitosan and its modifications have drawn a lot of interest in recent years. Due to its remarkable adsorption behavior toward a range of dangerous heavy metals, chitosan is a possible agent for eliminating metals from aqueous solutions. The review has focused on the ideas of biosorption, its kinds, architectures, and characteristics, as well as using modified (physically and chemically modified) chitosan, blends, and composites to remove heavy metals from water. The main objective of the review is to describe the most important aspects of chitosan-based adsorbents that might be beneficial for enhancing the adsorption capabilities of modified chitosan and promoting the usage of this material in the removal of heavy metal pollutants.

Abstract:Various adsorption materials are widely used in the treatment of heavy metal wastewater and dye wastewater because of their good adsorption properties. Here, polyethyleneimine (PEI)-modified chitosan magnetic hydrogels were prepared through a chemical co-precipitation method using glutaraldehyde as the cross-linking agent. The functional groups and structures of the hydrogels were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction phase analysis, respectively. The surface structures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The magnetic parameters including hysteresis loops of the hydrogel were measured. Heavy metal adsorption experiments showed that the synthesized magnetic hydrogel had good adsorption properties for heavy metals, and saturated adsorption of Pb 2+ , Ni 2+ , and Cu 2+ reached 100.32, 105.98, and 128.96 mg g −1 , respectively. Studies of isothermal adsorption and adsorption kinetics showed that the adsorption process follows a pseudo-second-order kinetics model adsorption, as the Langmuir isothermal adsorption. Selective adsorption of heavy metal ions by a magnetic hydrogel showed that Pb 2+ , Ni 2+ , and Cu 2+ had obvious competitive adsorption (on the order of Cu 2+ > Ni 2+ > Pb 2+ ). The cyclic adsorption of metal ions showed that the magnetic hydrogel could be reused by 0.02 mol L −1 EDTA-2Na desorption. The hydrogel retained its good adsorption properties, and the removal rate of Pb 2+ , Ni 2+ , and Cu 2+ was still more than 85% after 4 cycles. The PEI-modified chitosan magnetic hydrogel adsorbent thus had broad application prospects for the treatment of heavy metal wastewater.

Abstract:<p>Chitosan, a low cost polymer, has been used in many studies for adsorption of heavy metal ions. This review covers the performance of all those adsorbents which were derived from chitosan for the adsorption of heavy metal ions in recent past. Further, the common chitosan modifications methods have been discussed in this paper among which crosslinking and grafting were found to be the most popular methods. Adsorption equilibrium and kinetics were also studied and Pseudo-second order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm were found to be successful for modeling of most of the chitosan derivatives-metal adsorption experiments. Moreover, with focus on chitosan derivatives, effect of adsorbent structure on metal removal, adsorption mechanism, effect of co-existing ions on adsorption, adsorbent synthesis protocols and regeneration methods have been also discussed in great detail. Finally, fixed bed column design for industrial wastewater treatment was elaborated along with efficiency of chitosan based adsorbents in columns.</p>

Abstract:Pollutants detection and water purification are very important to achieve environmental protection and resource utilization. It has become increasingly important and urgent to fabricate novel environmentally–friendly materials to remove various pollutants. Recently, magnetic chitosan–based materials (M-CSbMs) with abundant reactive –NH 2 and –OH groups have been extensively used as adsorbents and photocatalysts for environmental remediation due to its high activity, green sources, biodegradability, and low cost. In this review, several reliable preparation strategies ( in-situ strategy, two-step strategy, and post-deposition strategy) of M-CSbMs are summarized. In-depth discussions regarding the parameters affecting the practical potential of M-CSbMs are highlighted in detail. Importantly, the review focused on the applications of M-CSbMs in effective removal and magnetic solid-phase extraction for contaminants, such as heavy metal ions, organic dyes, antibiotics, and other pollutants. Finally, the current challenges and prospects of M-CSbMs are provided with the expectation to boost their practical application in water purification and solid-phase extraction of contaminants.

Abstract:Magnetic chitosan microspheres were prepared and chemically modified with thiourea (TMCS) for adsorption of metal ions. TMCS obtained were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), IR, magnetic properties and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The adsorption properties of TMCS toward Hg2+, Cu2+, and Ni2+ ions were evaluated. Various factors affecting the uptake behavior such as contact time, temperature, pH and initial concentration of the metal ions were investigated. The kinetics was evaluated utilizing the pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and the intra-particle diffusion models. The equilibrium data were analyzed using the Langmuir, Freundlich, and Tempkin isotherm models. The adsorption kinetics followed the mechanism of the pseudo-second-order equation for all systems studied, evidencing chemical sorption as the rate-limiting step of adsorption mechanism and not involving a mass transfer in solution. The best interpretation for the equilibrium data was given by Langmuir isotherm, and the maximum adsorption capacities were 625.2, 66.7, and 15.3mg/g for Hg2+, Cu2+, and Ni2+ ions, respectively. TMCS displayed higher adsorption capacity for Hg2+ in all pH ranges studied. The adsorption capacity of the metal ions decreased with increasing temperature. The metal ion-loaded TMCS with were regenerated with an efficiency of greater than 88% using 0.01–0.1M ethylendiamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA).

Abstract:With the rapid growth of new-energy batteries and metallurgical industry, water pollution caused by toxic heavy-metals from these sectors has increased to a new level, which is seriously threating the eco-system and human health. Thus, the effective disposal of metal-bearing water has become a vital requirement. To resolve such a problem, developing eco-friendly biochar-based adsorbents has become urgent. As an eco-friendly material, biochar has attracted increasingly attention due to its low-cost, high surface area and abundant functional groups. However, pristine biochar also shows low adsorption efficiency for heavy-metals. Consequently, improving its adsorption efficiency via modification is considered as one of most effective techniques. In the last 15 years, various methods were proposed to modify biochar. However, review articles on the usage of modified-biochars for heavy-metals adsorption are unavailable. To summarize these newly-developed modification methods including organic-modified, nonmetal-modified, metal-modified, metal/organic-modified, and metal/mineral-modified, this review will focus on the preparation, characterizations and applications of modified-biochar adsorbents (MBAs) for heavy-metals. More emphasis will be on the adsorption of MBAs for heavy-metals in a single-metal, mixed multi-metal, and mixed metal/organic matter solution systems. Meanwhile, the adsorption mechanism of MBAs for Cr(VI), Cd (II), Pb(II) and Cu(II) will be highlighted. It is found that the adsorption mechanism of MBAs in different mixed multi-metal solution systems is complicated and competitive adsorption is inevitable. Typically, the effect of functional groups from MBAs on heavy-metals adsorption is diverse, more studies are required in the future. Finally, the present state and future perspective will be discussed.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to develop a novel magnetic EDTA-modified chitosan/SiO2/Fe3O4 adsorbent (EDCMS) for removal of heavy metals ions from aqueous solution. EDCMS was prepared by surface modification of chitosan/SiO2/Fe3O4 (CMS) with EDTA using water-soluble carbodiimide as the cross-linker in buffer solution. Both EDCMS and CMS were characterized and their adsorption properties for removal of heavy metal ions under varied experimental conditions were also investigated. The results revealed that EDCMS had better tolerance to low pH and exhibited much higher removal efficiency for the metal ions in comparison with CMS. Moreover, the adsorption kinetics for EDCMS and CMS followed the mechanism of the pseudo-second order kinetic model, and their equilibrium data were fitted with the Langmuir isothermal model well. The maximum adsorption capacities of CMS were found to be 0.495, 0.045, 0.040mmolg−1 for Cu(II), Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions at pH 5.0 (25°C), respectively, which showed the selective adsorption of Cu(II) ions, and the values of EDCMS were 0.699, 0.596, 0.563mmolg−1 for Cu(II), Pb(II), and Cd(II) ions under the same conditions, respectively, which were much higher than that of CMS. The adsorption process of EDCMS and CMS was endothermic, and further recycle experiments showed there was about 25% loss in the adsorption capacity of EDCMS for heavy metal ions after 12 times reuse. All the results demonstrate that EDCMS is a potential recyclable adsorbent for hazardous metal ions in waste water.

Abstract:In this work, we examined the effects of various parameters, such as pH, contact time, initial concentration, and temperature, on the adsorption of Hg(II) by ethylenediamine-modified magnetic crosslinking chitosan microspheres (EMCR). EMCR had the diameter size range of 80–250μm, average pore size of 826nm, BET surface area of 68.6m2/g, and saturated magnetization of 15.4emu/g. The maximum uptake of Hg(II) was recorded at pH 5. At pH 3, Hg(II) could be selectively separated from Cd(II), Pb(II), Zn(II), Cu(II), Ca(II), and Mg(II). Equilibrium data were fitted well with Langmuir isotherms with the maximum adsorption capacity of 2.69mmol/g for Hg(II). Both kinetics and thermodynamic parameters of the adsorption process were obtained. The data indicated that adsorption process was exothermic spontaneous reaction and kinetically proceeded according to pseudo-second-order model. The metal ion-loaded EMCR were regenerated with an efficiency of more than 90% using 0.02–0.1M thiourea.

Abstract:Heavy metal ion pollution in water and soil is a formidable environmental problem. Due to their desired heavy metal capture capacity and excellent chemical and physical stability, resin chelating ligands have been widely used in heavy metal adsorption. In this Review, we outline the latest progress in chelating resin adsorbents toward heavy metals. This paper reviews the methods of selectively separating the target ions in various solutions and screens the excellent performances of chelating resins; the types and synthesis methods of chelating resins are also summarized. Different adsorption mechanisms existing between chelating resins and heavy metal ions are summarized, and the influencing factors of the adsorption processes are analyzed. On this basis, we propose the opportunities, challenges, and prospects faced by researchers studying chelating resin materials in the adsorption of heavy metals, and the reasonable design of advanced chelated resin-based adsorption systems should achieve an eco-friendly and sustainable environment.

Abstract:Chitosan has several shortcomings that limit its practical application for the adsorption of heavy metals: mechanical instability, a challenging separation and recovery process, and low equilibrium capacity. This study describes the synthesis of a magnetic xanthate-modified polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan composite (XMPC) for the efficient removal and recovery of heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions. The XMPC was synthesized from polyvinyl alcohol, chitosan, and magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2 nanoparticles. The XMPC was characterized, and its adsorption performance in removing heavy metal ions was studied under different experimental conditions. The adsorption kinetics fit a pseudo-second-order kinetic model well. This showed that the adsorption of heavy metal ions by the XMPC is a chemical adsorption and is affected by intra-particle diffusion. The equilibrium adsorption isotherm was well described by the Langmuir and Freundlich equations. The XMPC reached adsorption equilibrium at 303 K after approximately 120 min, and the removal rate of Cd(II) ions was 307 mg/g. The composite material can be reused many times and is easily magnetically separated from the solution. This makes the XMPC a promising candidate for widespread application in sewage treatment systems for the removal of heavy metals.

Abstract:Heavy metal pollution is a serious environmental problem in the world, especially in developing countries. Among different treatment technologies, biosorption seems a promising alternative method. Chitosan-based biosorbents are potential and effective for heavy metal removal from aqueous solution. The preparation and characterization of the natural polymer chitosan, modified chitosan and chitosan composites, and their application for the removal or recovery of toxic heavy metals, precious metals and radionuclides from wastewater were introduced. Chitosan structures and their properties, chitosan modifications (physical conditioning and chemical modification), blends and composites as well as the metal sorption by chitosan-based biosorbents were briefly presented. The metal sorption capacities, influence of intrinsic nature of metal ions, pH and contact time, desorbing agents, isotherm and kinetics models, biosorption mechanisms were discussed.

Abstract:Due to the high concentration of various toxic and dangerous pollutants, industrial effluents have imposed increasing threats. Among the various processes for wastewater treatment, adsorption is widely used due to its simplicity, good treatment efficiency, availability of a wide range of adsorbents, and cost-effectiveness. Chitosan (CS) has received great attention as a pollutant adsorbent due to its low cost and many -OH and -NH2 functional groups that can bind heavy metal ions. However, weaknesses such as sensitivity to pH, low thermal stability and low mechanical strength, limit the application of CS in wastewater treatment. The modification of these functional groups can improve its performance via cross-linking and grafting agents. The porosity and specific surface area of CS in powder form are not ideal, so physical modification of CS via integration with other materials (e.g., metal oxide, zeolite, clay, etc.) leads to the creation of composite materials with improved absorption performance. This review provides reports on the application of CS and its nanocomposites (NCs) for the removal of various heavy metal ions. Synthesis strategy, adsorption mechanism and influencing factors on sorbents for heavy metals are discussed in detail.

Abstract:Xanthate-modified cross-linked magnetic chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol) particles (XCMCP) were synthesized and applied to remove Pb(II) and Cu(II) ions from aqueous solutions. To further explore the adsorption mechanisms, the complexes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). The effects of pH, contact time, and temperature on the adsorption process were investigated. The results showed that the particles were super-paramagnetic with a saturation magnetization of 34.8 emu g(-1), had an irregular surface, and successfully introduced xanthate groups. The adsorption capacity of XCMCP for Pb(II) or Cu(II) was better in near-neutral pH. The kinetic data were well-described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms fit the equilibrium data well. Based on the Langmuir isotherm model, the maximum adsorption capacities of XCMCP at 328 K were 59.855 and 139.797 mg g(-1) for Pb(II) and Cu(II), respectively. Meanwhile, the effect of temperature on the reaction process was not significant. XCMCP exhibited a good property for repeated use and could still retain an effective adsorption efficiency after seven cycles. The mechanism for Pb(II) and Cu(II) adsorption onto XCMCP involves the interactions of N and S atoms with heavy metals, crystal formation and surface adsorption. Thereinto, contributions of crystal formation were dominant. These properties of XCMCP make it promising for practical use, which suggests that XCMCP is a promising adsorbent for hazardous-metal-ion-contaminated water treatment.

Abstract:New cross-linked chitosan magnetic beads modified with cysteine-glutaraldehyde schiff’s base (Chi-CG) were utilized as a possible adsorbent for the elimination of Cu(II) and Cr(VI) from aqueous solutions. The prepared magnetic beads were investigated by several techniques including FTIR, SEM, XPS, TGA and magnetism. The effects of the main analytical parameters (e.g. pH, temperature, contact time, adsorption isotherms, conditions of desorption and the effect of electrolyte) were investigated in detail. At optimum conditions, the adsorption equilibrium was achieved after almost 90min in case of Cu(II) and 110min in case of Cr(VI). The surface characteristics of the prepared magnetic beads were varied with different pH ranges. The maximum adsorption capacities for Cu(II) and Cr(VI) were 156.49 and 138.53mgg−1, respectively. The adsorption isotherms fit well with Langmuir equation that indicates the monolayer adsorption. Also, pseudo-2nd order equation governs the overall kinetics, indicating chemical reaction as that the rate limiting step. Spontaneous nature of the adsorption process was indicated according to the positive and the negative values of ΔH° and ΔG°; respectively. The adsorption rate decreased to 90% of the primary adsorption amount after three regeneration cycles. Additionally, no significant reduction in the sorption performance of either Cu(II) or Cr(VI) in the presence of solutions containing K+, Na+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl−, NO3 −, SO4 2− or PO4 3− ions. The accuracy was examined by analyzing some spiked samples. The proposed procedure was applied effectively for the removal of studied toxic ions in some natural and industrial samples.

Abstract:The environmental pollution caused by heavy metal ions has become a serious global environmental issue. Heavy metal contaminants released from industrial effluents, agricultural runoff, and human activities, can enter into water resources. The toxicity of these heavy metal ions even at trace concentrations presents a substantial hazard to both aquatic systems and human well-being. The membrane separation processes have become more promising sustainable techniques for the separation of metal ions from the effluent. The research efforts have been concentrated on improving the synthesis of membranes and membrane materials to facilitate the sustainable separation of heavy metals. The application of chitosan in the fabrication of membranes is getting more attention. Chitosan, a natural polysaccharide derived from chitin, is abundant in nature and has active hydroxyl and amino groups suitable for the separation of heavy metal ions. It exhibits excellent chelating tendency, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. The functionalization of chitosan to improve its mechanical strength, chemical stability, and antifouling properties has become an ongoing area of research. This review examines the synthesis and efficient applications of chitosan blended membranes. The review concludes by outlining the current challenges and proposing future research prospects to enhance the applicability of chitosan-blended membranes in environmental remediation.
