Abstract:A novel self-floating adsorbent was prepared from a layered alkali silicate, octosilicate characterized by the well-defined particle shape (rectangular platy particle with the lateral size of 1-3 µm and the thickness of 0.1 µm) and the high cation exchange capacity (3.7 meq/g), by the surface modification with a silane coupling reagent, chlorodimethyl[3-(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluophenyl)propyl]silane, by a solvent-free mechanochemical reaction at room temperature. While the interlayer cation exchange ability of octosilicate was kept for the adsorbent application, [3-(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluophenyl)propyl] group was grafted on the platy particles of octosilicate to provide hydrophobic character. The amount of chlorodimethyl[3-(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluophenyl)propyl]silane was determined to be 20 mg for 1 g of octosilicate according to the geometrical consideration to cover the particle surface at the monomolecular layer level. The modified octosilicate was successfully floated at the air-water interface for more than 1 month and floated even after shaking and sonication and was easily collected from the interface after the use. Adsorption of Ni (II), Cu (II), Pb (II), In (III), and methylene blue from water was efficient without the significant loss of the cation exchange capacity of octosilicate.
