Abstract:Electrospinning is a versatile and viable technique for generating ultrathin fibers. Remarkable progress has been made with regard to the development of electrospinning methods and engineering of electrospun nanofibers to suit or enable various applications. We aim to provide a comprehensive overview of electrospinning, including the principle, methods, materials, and applications. We begin with a brief introduction to the early history of electrospinning, followed by discussion of its principle and typical apparatus. We then discuss its renaissance over the past two decades as a powerful technology for the production of nanofibers with diversified compositions, structures, and properties. Afterward, we discuss the applications of electrospun nanofibers, including their use as "smart" mats, filtration membranes, catalytic supports, energy harvesting/conversion/storage components, and photonic and electronic devices, as well as biomedical scaffolds. We highlight the most relevant and recent advances related to the applications of electrospun nanofibers by focusing on the most representative examples. We also offer perspectives on the challenges, opportunities, and new directions for future development. At the end, we discuss approaches to the scale-up production of electrospun nanofibers and briefly discuss various types of commercial products based on electrospun nanofibers that have found widespread use in our everyday life.

Abstract:Nanofibers have been the subject of recent intensive research due to their unique properties, especially their large surface-area-to-volume ratio, which is about 1000 times higher than that of a human hair. They also have several other remarkable characteristics, such as flexibility in surface functionality, superior mechanical properties such as stiffness and tensile strength, their capacity to be formed into a variety of shapes, and the fact that they can be produced from a wide range of organic and inorganic polymers and ceramics. These outstanding properties make polymer nanofibers the optimal candidates for providing significant improvements in current technology and for opening the door to novel applications in many research areas. The present review presents a comprehensive summary of the existing solution and melts electrospinning technologies and the effects of parameters on the electrospinning process and nanofiber morphology.

Abstract:Electrospinning is one of the most accessed nanofabrication techniques during the last three decades, attributed to its viability for the mass production of continuous nanofibers with superior properties from a variety of polymers and polymeric composites. Large investments from various sectors have pushed the development of electrospinning industrial setups capable of producing nanofibers in millions of kilograms per year for several practical applications. Herein, the lessons learned over three decades of research, innovations, and designs on electrospinning products are discussed in detail. The historical developments, engineering, and future opportunities of electrospun nanofibers (ESNFs) are critically addressed. The laboratory-to-industry transition gaps for electrospinning technology and ESNFs products, the potential of electrospun nanostructured materials for various applications, and academia-industry comparison are comprehensively analyzed. The current challenges and future trends regarding the use of this technology to fabricate promising nano/macro-products are critically demonstrated. We show that future research on electrospinning should focus on theoretical and technological developments to achieve better maneuverability during large-scale fiber formation, redesigning the electrospinning process around decarbonizing the materials processing to align with the sustainability agenda and the integration of electrospinning technology with the tools of intelligent manufacturing and IR 4.0.

Abstract:Over the past decade, there has been a tremendous increase in the demand for polymeric nanofibres which are promising candidates for various applications including tissue engineering, protective clothing, filtration and sensors. To address thisdemand, researchers have turned to the development of various techniques such as electrospinning, meltblowing, bicomponent spinning, forcespinning and flash-spinning for the fabrication of polymeric nanofibres. However, electrospinning is the widely used technique for the fabrication of continuous nanofibres. The ability to fabricate nanofibrous assemblies of various materials (such as polymers, ceramics and metals) with possible control of the fibre fineness, surface morphology, orientation and cross-sectional configuration, gives electrospinning an edge over other processes. Although several researches have been done in electrospinning, understanding some of the other processes is still in infancy. In this perspective article, we summarize the fundamentals of various techniques for the fabrication of nanofibres. This paper also highlights a gamut of recent advances in the techniques for nanofibre fabrication.

Abstract:<p>Electrospinning, considered as a low-cost and straightforward approach, attracts tremendous attention because nanofibrous materials with functional properties prepared by it can be widely applied in numerous fields, including rechargeable batteries, filtration, and distillation. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the latest advances in developing this unique technique, which starts with a brief introduction of the advantages of electrospinning and highlights ongoing research activities, followed by its principles and progress. Afterward, the corresponding properties of electrospun nanofibers are discussed. A future vision regarding challenges and perspectives in this area is proposed at the end. It is believed that this review would provide an extensive and comprehensive reference to utilize this advanced technique to generate novel nanofibers performing in high demanding areas.</p>

Abstract:Electrospinning provides a simple and versatile method for generating ultrathin fibers from a rich variety of materials that include polymers, composites, and ceramics. This article presents an overview of this technique, with focus on progress achieved in the last three years. After a brief description of the setups for electrospinning, we choose to concentrate on the mechanisms and theoretical models that have been developed for electrospinning, as well as the ability to control the diameter, morphology, composition, secondary structure, and spatial alignment of electrospun nanofibers. In addition, we highlight some potential applications associated with the remarkable features of electrospun nanofibers. Our discussion is concluded with some personal perspectives on the future directions in which this wonderful technique could be pursued. Current research activities on the electrospinning of nanofibers (see Figure, right) are comprehensively reviewed. After a brief discussion of setups (see Figure, left), the mechanisms and theoretical models for electrospinning are presented, followed by approaches for controlling the diameter, morphology, composition, secondary structure, and spatial alignment. Abstract:Electrospinning is used to fabricate microscale to nanoscale materials from polymeric solutions based on electrohydrodynamics. Material modifications are achieved through physical and chemical processes, producing diverse material architectures, from laboratory to industrial scales, for conventional and emerging applications. This Primer explains electrospinning technology, encompassing principles, methodologies, equipment, materials, applications, scalability and optimization. The article begins by elucidating the working principles, providing an overview of electrospinning methods and process parameters at laboratory and industrial scales, and discussing emerging equipment. Methods are described for tailoring the composition, architecture and properties of electrospun fibres and fibre assemblies. The versatility of these properties makes electrospun materials suitable for diverse applications spanning environmental, energy and medical applications, textiles, wearables, agriculture and advanced materials. The Primer concludes by discussing the constraints of current electrospinning techniques and offers a perspective on the field's potential future trajectory.

Abstract:This review article forces on discussing the differences and relationships of three nanofiber technologies—electrospinning, centrifugal spinning, and electro‐centrifugal spinning. It mainly summarizes the existing devices and crucial processing parameters. The electro‐centrifugal spinning combines the strengths of electrospinning and centrifugal spinning, showing potentials in processing elegant nanofibers in large scale. Nanofiber‐based products are widely used in the fields of public health, air/water filtration, energy storage, etc. The demand for nonwoven products is rapidly increasing especially after COVID‐19 pandemic. Electrospinning is the most popular technology to produce nanofiber‐based products from various kinds of materials in bench and commercial scales. While centrifugal spinning and electro‐centrifugal spinning are considered to be the other two well‐known technologies to fabricate nanofibers. However, their developments are restricted mainly due to the unnormalized spinning devices and spinning principles. High solution concentration and high production efficiency are the two main strengths of centrifugal spinning, but beaded fibers can be formed easily due to air perturbation or device vibration. Electro‐centrifugal spinning is formed by introducing a high voltage electrostatic field into the centrifugal spinning system, which suppresses the formation of beaded fibers and results in producing elegant nanofibers. It is believed that electrospinning can be replaced by electro‐centrifugal spinning in some specific application areas. This article gives an overview on the existing devices and the crucial processing parameters of these nanofiber technologies, also constructive suggestions are proposed to facilitate the development of centrifugal and electro‐centrifugal spinning.

Abstract:This review aims to demystify the technological advancements that have reshaped the field of electrospinning since its reemergence at the onset of the 21st century. Each technological breakthrough is expounded upon and critically assessed toward each technology's advantages and drawbacks. The electrospinning techniques introduced in this review are classified based on apparatus configuration, to needle‐based and needleless. Electrospinning has rapidly progressed over the past few decades as an easy and versatile way to fabricate fibers with diameters ranging from micrometers to tens of nanometers that present unique and intricate morphologies. This has led to the conception of new technologies and diverse methods that exploit the basic electrohydrodynamic phenomena of the electrospinning process, which has in turn led to the invention of novel apparatuses that have reshaped the field. Research on revamping conventional electrospinning has principally focused on achieving three key objectives: upscaling the process while retaining consistent morphological traits, developing 3D nanofibrous macrostructures, and formulating novel fiber configurations. This review introduces an extensive group of diverse electrospinning techniques and presents a comperative study based on the apparatus type and output. Then, each process's advantages and limitations are critically assessed to identify the bona fide practicability and relevance of each technological breakthrough. Finally, the outlook on future developments of advanced electrospinning technologies is outlined, with an emphasis on upscaling, translational research, sustainable manufacturing and prospective solutions to current shortcomings.

Abstract:With the rapid development of human technology, we are continuously facing new problems and challenges. On the one hand are the limited natural resources, and on the other hand are the increasing demands for convenient lifestyle. It is not a good idea to sacrifice one aspect to satisfy the other, but we should seek a balance between sustainable development and the comfortable living concept. Abstract:Electrospun polymeric nanofibers are essential in various fields for various applications because of their unique properties. Their features are similar to extracellular matrices, which suggests them for applications in healthcare fields, such as antimicrobials, tissue engineering, drug delivery, wound healing, bone regeneration, and biosensors. This review focuses on the synthesis of electrospun polymeric nanofibers, their surface modification, and their biomedical applications. Nanofibers can be fabricated from both natural and synthetic polymers and their composites. Even though they mimic extracellular matrices, their surface features (physicochemical characteristics) are not always capable of fulfilling the purpose of the target application. Therefore, they need to be improved via surface modification techniques. Both needle-based and needleless electrospinning are thoroughly discussed. Various techniques and setups employed in each method are also reviewed. Furthermore, pre- and postspinning modification approaches for electrospun nanofibers, including instrument design and the modification features for targeted biomedical applications, are also extensively discussed. In this way, the remarkable potential of electrospun polymeric nanofibers can be highlighted to reveal future research directions in this dynamic field.

Abstract:Electrospinning is one of the simple, versatile, and convenient techniques for producing nanofibers that have found numerous applications in the fields of biomedical engineering, surface materials, and catalysis. Despite the great achievements, the electrospinning compounds are still limited to the utilization of polymers with high molar mass which are regarded as an indispensable element for the production of nanofibers. It is found that electrospinning chemicals based on supramolecular systems can avoid the use of high molecular weight polymers, and it is emerging as a powerful route to generate fibers in the nano-scale size. The presence of strong intermolecular interactions that function as chain entanglements allows for the formation of nanofibers during the process of electrospinning. This article provides recent impressive developments concerning nanofiber preparation made by the combination of electrospinning and supramolecular chemistry, which enables easy access to tailor-made nanofibers. Electrospinning supramolecular systems consisting of phospholipids, surfactants, crown ether derivatives as well as cyclodextrins will be highlighted in this review. Moreover, we will pay particular attention to the functionalities of electrospun nanofibers obtained from supramolecular systems.

Abstract:Nanotechnology is a budding technology that has been identified as a vital scientific and commercial venture with global economic benefits. With the increasing knowledge of nanomaterial manufacturing techniques, research groups around the globe are focusing more on the preparation of nanomaterials for various applications. Among the various techniques reported in the literature, electrospinning has gathered significant interest because of its ability to fabricate nanostructures with unique properties such as a high surface area and inter/intra fibrous porosity. Electrospinning has been the most widely used technique in the late 20th (1990) and early 21st (2000) centuries (Reneker and Yarin, 2008). Since its first use in the early 20th (1900) (Cooley, 1900) century, significant improvements have been made in the instrument design, material used, and nanomaterials produced. The production of nanomaterials (nanofibers) via electrospinning is affected by many operating parameters. This review paper will provide an overview of the electrospinning (applied electric field, distance between the needle and collector and flow rate, needle diameter), solution (polymer concentration, viscosity, solvent and solution conductivity) and environmental (relativity humidity and temperature) parameters that affect the nanofibers fabrication and the application of nanofibers in tissue engineering, drug delivery systems, wound dressings, antibacterial study, filtration, desalination, protective clothing fabrication, and biosensors.

Abstract:Electrospinning is one of the most studied techniques for the facile, versatile, and scalable synthesis of nano/micro/macro-fibers. The process employs various polymers of natural and synthetic origin for the preparation of fibers with several immeasurable designs, in virgin and composite forms. Bestowed with alluring properties such as solubility/solvolysis, biocompatibility, and degradability, electrospun fibers have found numerous applications as biomedical materials for tissue engineering, localized therapy, wound dressing, and drug delivery. Their properties enable effortless and precise compounding with various biopharmaceuticals and nanomaterials that are sensitive to chemo-, magnetic-, and photo-cathartic modalities. We hence provide a summarized insight into the recent past and predict the future of electrospun nanofibers as intelligent systems for biomedical applications.

Abstract:Nanofibers have been attracting growing attention owing to their outstanding physicochemical and structural properties as well as diverse and intriguing applications. Electrospinning has been known as a simple, flexible, and multipurpose technique for the fabrication of submicro scale fibers. Throughout the last two decades, numerous investigations have focused on the employment of electrospinning techniques to improve the characteristics of fabricated fibers. This review highlights the state of the art of melt electrospinning and clarifies the major categories based on multitemperature control, gas assist, laser melt, coaxial, and needleless designs. In addition, we represent the effect of melt electrospinning process parameters on the properties of produced fibers. Finally, this review summarizes the challenges and obstacles connected to the melt electrospinning technique.

Abstract:Although there are several methods for obtaining sub-micro or nanofibers, electrospinning is perhaps the most versatile process. Nanotechnology has been widely accepted as dealing with the science and technology where at least one dimension is of roughly 1 to 100 nm. Electrospinning has been recognized as a feasible technique for the fabrication of polymeric nanofiber yarns. Various materials including polymers, composites, ceramics and metals have been electrospun into nanofibers. The nanofibers thus produced exhibit novel and significantly improved physical, chemical and biological properties due to their nanolevel size. In this article, the electrospinning process, along with its modeling equations and applications have been discussed. Some typical case studies regarding electrospinning under various categories have also been discussed.
