Abstract:A novel red emitting coordination polymer (CP), [Cu(tpp)center dot H2O](2n) (1) [Htpp - 1-(4-tetrazol-5 "-yl) benzyl-3-( pyraziny-l) pyrazole], has been successfully constructed using a nitrogen heterocyclic ring ligand and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared (IR) studies, elemental analysis and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). 1 is a rare 3D supramolecular assembly based on a 1D polymeric chain substructure of {Cu2N4} bridged by the Htpp ligand, which is propagated to form an extended 3D structure with the help of pi-pi stacking and C-H center dot center dot center dot pi hydrogen-bonded packing. Based on the phosphorescence of Cu(I)-CP, 1 is chosen as a probe for sensing different small molecules and metal ions. The luminescence properties of 1 well dispersed in different solvents have been investigated systematically, which demonstrates distinct solvent-dependent luminescence spectra with emission intensities that are significantly quenched by acetone (detection limit: 0.0842 vol%). Besides that, 1 with open Lewis basic nitrogen atoms on the chain surface was exploited for the binding and specific sensing of metal ions via Lewis base interactions, and shows high selectivity and sensitivity (K-sv = 4.6 X 10(4) L mol(-1)) for Fe3+ ions with luminescence quenching. Solid-state 1 displays excellent red lighting properties, which can be comparable with rare earth compounds. Subsequently, 1 blended poly(methyl methacrylate) PMMA film demonstrates comparable intensity with the solid state at concentrations of 1.5%, accompanied by an improvement of the luminescence lifetimes.

Abstract:A new compound, 2-boronobenzaldehyde-(2'-hydroxyl-4'-sulfonic acid) naphthalene hydrazone (1), was synthesized and its structure was characterized by proton nuclear magnetic resonance, mass and element analyses. The presence of Pb2+ led 1 to undergo colorimetric and fluorescent changes, which were detectable with the naked eye. Thus, a dual spectral response for Pb2+ detection was introduced. In KH2PO4-NaOH buffer aqueous solution (pH 6.0), 1 exhibited fluorescence enhancement at 568 nm and hyperchromicity at 595 nm upon the addition of Pb2+. The fluorescent intensity change was proportionate to the concentration of Pb2+ with a dynamic working range of 5.0 x 10(-7) mol L-1 to 1.0 x 10(-4) mol L-1 and a detection limit of 3.7 x 10(-8) mol L-1. The fluorometric method was successfully applied for the detection of Pb2+ water of Qianhu Lake and soil in Nanchang university campus. The recoveries were 111-116% for water and 97.6% for soil respectively, determined via the standard addition method. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Fluorescent sensors can transfer molecular recognition events into fluorescent signals. Among various kinds of chemosensors, fluorescent chemosensors offer distinct advantages in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, response time and in situ observation, and have attracted much attention recently. This review summarizes the progress of conjugated polymers based fluorescent chemosensors for ions. The molecular design, synthesis, mechanism and application of conjugated polymers based fluorescent chemosensors for cations are described in detail, and the developing orientation for further research is presented.

Abstract:Novel poly (zinc phthalocyanine) (poly(ZnPc)) nanoribbons have been obtained by polycyclotetramerization of bifunctional ZnPc monomers. The microstructures of poly(ZnPc) nanoribbons are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermalgravimetry. Due to its unique two-dimensional structure and rich functionality, the poly(ZnPc) nanoribbons exhibit excellent sensitivity in detecting lead ions (Pb2+) by using anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV) method, and the detection limit for Pb2+ is 10-10 mol L-1 in aqueous media, which is much attractive for the development of portable and highly sensitive heavy metal ion sensors.

Abstract:Two-dimentional layered WS2 nanosheets with rich active edge exhibit intrinsic peroxidase-mimic activity, which make them an ideal material for sensor design. However, there is still lack of research on the catalysis and regulation mechanisms of the layered WS2 nanosheets as well as their application in the detection of hazardous substances. Herein, the regulatory effect of Pb(II) on the peroxidase-mimic activity of the layered WS2 nanosheets was firstly investigated, which enable us to construct a novel and facile colorimetric sensor for ultrasensitive and selective detection of Pb(II). To improve the performance of colorimetric sensor, some important parameters like buffer conditions, substrates and temperature have been investigated. Under the optimal conditions, the catalytic kinetics of layered WS2 nanosheets were extensively investigated. The peroxidase-mimic catalytic reaction was proved to be the "ping pong" mechanism, and the regulatory effect of Pb(II) on layered WS2 nanosheets was agreed with noncompetitive inhibition. The absorbance variation of colorimetric sensor is proportionally related to the concentration of heavy metals, which enable us to easily distinguish whether Pb(II) exceeds the permissible level in less than 20 min even by the naked eyes. The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantification (LOQ) of the proposed colorimetric sensor for Pb(II) were determined as low as 4 μg L-1 and 13.3 μg L-1, and displays excellent selectivity against other competitive metal ions. Moreover, the further studies also validate the applicability of colorimetric sensor in several actual samples, indicating that our strategy may has prospective applications for Pb(II) detection in environment and biological samples.
Polymeric Optodes Based on Upconverting Nanorods for Fluorescence Measurements of Pb2+ in Complex Samples

Abstract:We reported here a lead ion selective optode incorporating NaYF4: Er,Yb upconverting nanorods, chromoionophore ETH 5418, and lead ionophore together in hydrophobic polymer matrixes. The absorption spectra of protonated and unprotonated ETH 5418 overlap the two emission peaks of the upconverting material, respectively, which allows the fluorescent ion sensing based on the inner filter effect. The proposed optodes exhibited highly selective and reproducible sensing property for measuring lead ions in the range of 10−6–10−2M at pH 5. Because the excitation source is 980nm and the emission wavelength lies in the near-infrared region, the sensors have been successfully used in complex samples for example plasma with minimized background absorption and sample autofluorescence. The lead levels in sheep plasma and artificial industry wastewater samples obtained by the optode were comparable with the known addition amounts of Pb(NO3)2, providing a new method for testing Pb2+ in the industry wastewater.

Abstract:A new fluorescent sensor based on the BODIPY fluorophore and the polyamide receptor for Pb2+ was designed and synthesized. Abstract:A novel dual-responsive colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensor L based on diketopyrrolopyrrole derivative for Fe3+ detection was designed and synthesized. In presence of Fe3+, sensor L displayed strong colorimetric response as amaranth to rose pink and significant fluorescence enhancement and chromogenic change, which served as a naked-eye indicator by an obvious color change from purple to red. The binding constant for L-Fe3+ complex was found as 2.4×104 with the lower detection limit of 14.3nM. The sensing mechanism was investigated in detail by fluorescence measurements, IR and 1H NMR spectra. Sensor L for Fe3+ detection also exhibited high anti-interference performance, good reversibility, wide pH response range and instantaneous response time. Furthermore, the sensor L has been used to quantify Fe3+ ions in practical water samples with good recovery.

Abstract:Heavy metals, such as lead ions, are regarded as the main environmental contaminants and have a negative impact on human bodies, making detection technologies of lead ions critical. However, most existing detection methods suffer from time consumption, complicated sample pretreatment, and expensive equipment, which hinder their broad use in real-time detection. Herein, we show a new fluorescence sensor for detecting lead ions derived from liquid crystals doped with an aggregation-induced emission luminogen. The mechanism is based on the variation of fluorescence intensity caused by the disturbance of an ordered liquid crystal configuration in the presence of Pb2+, induced by DNAzyme and its catalytic cleavage. The proposed fluorescence sensor exhibits a low detection limit of 0.65 nM, which is 2 orders of magnitude lower than that previously reported in an optical sensor based on liquid crystals. The detection range of the Pb2+ fluorescence sensor is broad, from 20 nM to 100 μM, and it also selects lead ions from numerous metal ions exactly, resulting in a highly sensitive, highly selective, simple, and low-cost detection strategy of Pb2+ with potential applications in chemical and biological fields. This approach to designing a liquid crystal fluorescence sensor offers an inspiring stage for detecting biomacromolecules or other heavy metal ions by varying decorated molecules.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The accurate measurement of heavy metal ions is essential for human health and environmental protection. Here, we report the design of a simple and convenient bimodal strategy for signal-on, label-free lead ion detection in environmental samples based on two-dimensional metal-organic framework (2D-MOF) nanosheets. 2D-MOFs have different affinities toward guanine-rich DNA (ssGDNA) and the G-quadruplex, allowing these structures to be distinguished. The nanosheets were also used as quenchers for fluorescent lead ion detection. Using lead ions to induce G-quadruplex formation from ssGDNA, a simple fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) strategy was developed for lead ion detection; the detection limit was 3.3 nM. Based on changes in the GDNA configuration, the FRET system was converted into an electrochemical sensor for lead ion assays using an electrode modified with the 2D-MOF nanosheets. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed a high sensitivity and a low limit of detection (i.e., 8.7 pM) of the electrode. The adaptability of the bimodal mechanism was verified through the successful detection of lead ions in tap water and fertilizer samples, and the method accuracy was demonstrated through inductively coupled plasma analysis. The developed bimodal device is cost-effective, highly sensitive, and allows for convenient operation, thereby rendering it a promising and reliable system for the detection of lead ions in environmental samples.

Abstract:The linear conjugated polymer based on the 5,5'-positions of chiral 1,1'-binaphthyl shows strong green-blue fluorescence with high fluorescence quantum efficiency due to the extended pi-electronic structure between the chiral repeating unit and the 2,2'-bipyridyl conjugated linker unit. Cu2+ and Ni2+ can form non-radiative metal-to-ligand charge-transfer complexes with the polymer, and Co2+, Mn2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, Fe2+ can cause effective fluorescent quenching, which can be attributed to an energy transfer from the pi-conjugated chiral polymer to the metal complexes. A better understanding of energy-transfer processes in the polymers can provide information for the design of more sensitive materials.

Abstract:[reaction: see text] The pyridineethenyl-substituted tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) compounds, 4-(4-pyridineethenyl)tetrathiafulvalene (1a) and 4,4'(5')-[bis-(4-pyridineethenyl)]tetrathiafulvalene (2a) together with the styryl-substituted TTF compounds, 4-styryltetrathiafulvalene (1b) and 4,4'(5')-bis-styryltetrathiafulvalene (2b), have been designed and synthesized. All these compounds exhibit strong absorption bands in the range of 370 to 550 nm, which are assigned to the intramolecular charge-transfer transition from the HOMO in TTF to the LUMO in the pyridyl or phenyl group. Compared to compounds 1b and 2b, the pyridineethenyl-substituted TTF compounds 1a and 2a show remarkable sensing and coordinating properties to Pb2+. With the addition of micromolar concentrations of Pb2+ to the solution, 1a or 2a displays dramatic changes in the UV-vis absorption spectrum, 1H NMR spectrum, and redox property.
Detection of Metal Ions Based on Conjugated Fluorescent Polymers

Abstract:Conjugated fluorescent polymers (CPs) such as polyacetylene, polyfluorene, polythiophene and polyphenylene derivatives have unique optical properties, self-assembly performance and regulable structure and properties. They have been used as excellent optical sensing materials to develop high sensitive and selective sensors by utilizing the large extinction coefficient and high fluorescence quantum yield of conjugated polymers, which have been a research hot spot in the field of biosensors. Detection of metal ions based on the conjugated polymer primarily relies on the non-water-soluble conjugated polymers. Metal ions can be detected by investigating the changes of the optical characteristics of the polymers induced by the combination of metal ions with some units such as bipyridyl and crown ethers on the polymer chains. Water solubility of conjugated polymers can be improved by appending hydrophilic side chains on the main chain of polymer, which provide many new ideas for the design of metal ions biosensors. For example, some biomolecules such as DNA and glucopyranose can be used to design schemes in order to improve the sensitivity and selectivity for the detection of metal ions. This review summarizes the recent progress of highly sensitive detection of heavy metal ions (Hg2+, Pb2+), transition-metal ions (Cu2+, Ni2+, Fe3+, Fe2+, Ru3+, Ag+), rare earth element ion (Eu3+), and alkali metal ions (K+, Na+, Li+) based on non-water-soluble and water-soluble conjugated fluorescent polymers. The development prospects of the field is presented.
Meta-linked cationic poly(pyridinylene vinylene) conjugated polyelectrolytes: solution photophysics and fluorescent sensing of metal ions

Abstract:Abstract Two novel poly(pyridinylene vinylene) (PPV)-type conjugated polyelectrolytes 2,6-PPYPV-(2+) and 3,5-PPYPV-(2+) were synthesized via Heck coupling reaction and characterized by 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The two polymers consisting of meta-position substituted pyridinylenes as the metal recognition unit and a water-soluble divinyl-benzene derivative in the backbones. 2,6-PPYPV-(2+) and 3,5-PPYPV-(2+) both exhibit strongest fluorescence in methanol and weakest fluorescence in water among common polar solvents. In respect of ion detection, 3,5-PPYPV-(2+) has an excellent identifiability for Pd 2+ in methanol with the K_SV value of 1.1×10 5 m −1 while 2,6-PPYPV-(2+) has a good selectivity for Cu 2+ and Hg 2+ in aqueous solution. And all the Stern-Volmer plots of 2,6-PPYPV-(2+) and 3,5-PPYPV-(2+) in fluorescence quenching for metal ions have favorable tendencies. All the results suggest that 2,6-PPYPV-(2+) and 3,5-PPYPV-(2+) are promising materials in the applications of high performance chemosensors for some specific metal ions.

Abstract:Novel functional oligonucleotides, especially DNAzymes with RNA-cleavage activity, have been intensively studied due to their potential applications in therapeutics and sensors. Taking advantage of the high specificity of 17E DNAzyme for Pb(2+), highly sensitive and selective fluorescent, electrochemical and colorimetric sensors have been developed for Pb2+. In this work, we report a simple, sensitive and label-free 17E DNAzyme-based sensor for Pb(2+) detection using unmodified gold nanoparticles (GNPs) based on the fact that unfolded single-stranded DNA could be adsorbed on the citrate protected GNPs while double-stranded DNA could not. By our method the substrate cleavage by the 17E DNAzyme in the presence of Pb(2+) could be monitored by color change of GNPs, thereby Pb(2+) detection was realized. The detection of Pb(2+) could be realized within 20 min, with a detection limit of 500 nM. The selectivity of our sensor has been investigated by challenging the sensing system with other divalent metal ions. Since common steps such as modification and separation could be successfully avoided, the sensor developed here could provide a simple, cost-effective yet rapid and sensitive measurement tool for Pb(2+) detection and may prove useful in the development of sensors for clinical toxicology and environmental monitoring in the future.
Fluorescent Chemosensor for Metal Ions Based on Optically Active Polybinaphthyls and 1,3,4-Oxadiazole

Abstract:Linear chiral polymers P-1 and P-2 were synthesized by the polymerization of (R)-5,5′-dibromo-6,6′-di(4-methylphenyl)-2,2′-bisoctoxy-1,1′-binaphthyl (R-M-1) with 2,5-di(4-vinylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (M-2) and 2,5-di(4-tributylstannylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (M-3) via Heck and Stille cross-coupling reaction, respectively. The chiral conjugated polymer P-1 can show strong green-blue fluorescence, and the chiral polymer P-2 shows strong blue fluorescence. While the conjugated polymers P-1 and P-2 were used as fluorescent chemosensor for metal ions, their fluorescence can be efficiently quenched on the addition of different metal ions. The obvious quenching effect of the polymers P-1 and P-2 indicates that the intramolecular photoinduced electron transfer (PET) or photoinduced charge transfer (PCT) between the polymer backbone and receptor-ions in the main chain of fluorescent chemosensor can lead to the pronounced fluorescence quenching. The results also show that the chiral polymers P-1 and P-2 incorporating 1,3,4-oxadiazole moiety as the recognition site can act as a special fluorescent chemosensor for the appropriate detection of the sensitive and selective sense of metal ions.
Colorimetric and Electrochemiluminescence Dual-Mode Sensing of Lead Ion Based on Integrated Lab-on-Paper Device

Abstract:A highly selective two-point separation strategy was designed-based on a cross-like all-in-one lab-on-paper analytical device. The table and cleavable enzyme-coated reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-PdAu probe was fabricated as the signal reporter to enable the visualization and electrochemiluminescence (ECL) dual-mode sensing of Pb2+. Concretely, the experimental workflow consists of the following process: (i) fabrication of the lab-on-paper device and growth of Au nanopariicles on ECL detection zone, (ii), immobilization of Pb2+-specific DNAzyme, and (iii) hybridization between DNAzyme and rGO-PdAu-glucose oxidase (GOx) labeled oligonudeotide to form the double-stranded DNA. Upon addition of Pb2+ into the prepared system, the double-helix structure of the DNA was destroyed, resulting in the release of cleaved rGO-PdAu-GOx probe to visualization bar to promote the effective Qxidation and color change of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine. As a consequence, the color change can be recognized by naked eye, meanwhile GOx on an uncleaved signal probe can oxidize glucose along with the H2O2 production. As a co-reaction reagent for luminol ECL system, the concentration of H2O2 is proportional to the ECL intensity, which constitutes a new mechanism for colorimetric and ECL dual mode to detect Pb2+ With the method developed here, the concentration of Pb2+ could be easily determined by the naked eye within a linear range from 5 to 2000 nM, as well as by monitoring the decreased ECL intensity of luminol in a linear. range of 0.5-2000 nM. This work not only constructs a simple and versatile platform for on-site visible monitoring of Pb2+ in tap water and river water but also furnishes a strategy for designing a dual-mode sensing toward different heavy metal ions based on specific DNAzyme in the fields of environmental monitoring-related technologies.

Abstract:Lead (Pb) is an abundant heavy metal with various applications in the modern and industrialized world, like its utilization in pigments, gasoline, batteries, etc. Their pollution is a severe threat and persisting problems to the living organisms, especially to human health. Chronic exposure to lead causes various health problems like cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, reproductive diseases, and hypertension, even at very low levels. Keeping in view the above-mentioned health risk associated with lead poisoning, it is of prime importance to detect and determine it in various environmental and biological specimens. Various protocols are available for detecting and determining Pb2+ ions, including the most powerful, sensitive and convenient colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensors tool. In this paper, we discussed recent advancements in the development of colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensors such as pyridine, Schiff bases, thiourea, porphyrin, pyrene, thiophene, imidazophenazine, perylene tetracarboxylic, quinoline, phenanthroline, phenazine and polydiacetylene for the detection of Pb2+, explained their chemosensing design, characteristics application and their sensing modes for recognition of Pb2+ ions. We hope this review article will help the researchers to design highly selective, sensitive and efficient fluorescent and colorimetric chemosensors for Pb2+ ion detection.

Facile Fluorescence “Turn on” Sensing of Lead Ions in Water via Carbon Nanodots Immobilized in Spherical Polyelectrolyte Brushes

Abstract:Heavy metal detection has become very important for the protection of water resource. In this work, a novel controllable probe is presented for the sensitive detection of Pb2+ in aqueous solutions. The probe was synthesized via the immobilization of surface functionalized carbon dots (named as CAEA-Hs) into the shell of the spherical polyelectrolyte brushes (SPB). The fluorescence of CAEA-H was firstly "turned off" via electrostatic interaction induced quenching. Based on the aggregation induced emission enhancement (AIEE), the fluorescence of the immobilized CAEA-H could be specifically turned on via the aggregation of the SPB particles. This fluorescence "turn on" sensor could selectively detect Pb2+ among five different metal ions with a relatively wide detecting range (0-1.67 mM) and good linear relationship (R 2 = 0.9958). Moreover, the aggregating behavior and nano-structure of CAEA-H loaded SPB have been systematically analyzed via small angle X-ray scattering, turbidity titration, and Zeta-potential measurement. Based on a series of control experiments, we finally gain an insight into the sensing mechanism of this novel sensing probe. This contributed a proof of concept demonstration that sensitive and selective chemical detection can be achieved via a C-dot/SPB synergistic platform.
