Abstract:For more insight into the interaction of natural organic matter (NOM) with metal (hydr)oxides and oxyanions, the adsorption of added fulvic acid (FA) and corresponding release of phosphate were studied for a series of agricultural topsoils, strongly varying in soil properties. Our study shows that the adsorption of added FA is limited to binding at the external surfaces of nano-aggregates. The adsorption is relatively weak and pH-independent, due to its competition with native NOM of the organo-mineral phase. At low pH, the functional groups of adsorbed FA, but also native NOM, switch their interfacial position, making both good competitors, strongly releasing phosphate. At high pH, the competition is less, decreasing soluble phosphate and corresponding leaching. A statistical evaluation shows that the calculated NOM adsorption increases with DOC. Our surface complexation modeling points to nano-aggregate sizes of ~25-100 nm. The size varies with the total reactive surface area of the soils. Our findings imply that organic amendments equilibrate with only a part of the total reactive surface area. In acid soils, the addition of organic amendments will be more effective in solubilizing phosphate, which is beneficial from a plant nutrition perspective but simultaneously may contribute more to environmental eutrophication.
