Abstract:Maize is the principal food crop of people living in inner Terai region of Nepal. This region receives comparatively less rainfall that results in insufficient seedling emergence and inappropriate stand establishment. So seed priming is simple cost-effective and easily implementable technique that ensures better germination and crop establishment as well as enhancing production. The study was conducted from February 2021 to May 2021 in farmer’s field, Hadiya-9, Udaipur to examine how the growth and yield parameters were affected by seed priming. The experiment was laid out in single factor randomized complete block design with 3 replications and 7 treatments namely T1: control, T2: hydro priming for 6 h, T3: hydro priming for 12 h, T4: zinc sulphate priming (0.5 % for 12h), T5: zinc sulphate priming (1 % for 12 h) and T6= zinc sulphate priming (2 % for 12 h), T7= cow urine priming (2 times dilution). Results showed that there was a significant effect on the germination percentage, germination index, days to 100 % germination, leaf number, days to tasseling and silking, cob length, kernel per cob, cob girth, total plant population per hectare, 1000 grain weight, grain yield, biological yield and harvest index of corn. Hydro priming for 18 h (T3) and Cow urine priming 2.5 times dilution for 12 h (T7) were found to be most effective priming solution showing higher influence in germination percentage, germination index, days to 100 % germination, leaf number, days to tasseling and silking, plant height, cob length, kernel per cob, total plant population per hectare and harvest index. To sum up, the result indicate that the findings suggest that using hydro priming for 18 h and cow urine priming 2.5 times dilution for 12 h as seed priming agents can significantly improve the growth and yield parameters of corn. This study clarifies the potential of several compounds used during seed priming to improve corn development and production.
Effects of Seed Priming with Chitosan Solutions of Different Acidity on Seed Germination and Physiological Characteristics of Maize Seedling

Abstract:The effects of seed priming with acidic(pH5.1) and near neutral(pH6.4) chitosan solutions on seed germination and physiological characteristics of seedling were investigated using four maize materials.The results showed that priming treatments with two acidic chitosan solutions significantly enhanced the energy of germination,reduced mean germination time and increased shoot height and chlorophyll content.There were no significant difference in germination percentage between primed new seeds of three materials and un-treated control.The germination percentage of old seeds of Chaotian No.3 was,however,lower than that of the control.The POD activity and MDA content of the shoots of Suyu No.1 and Chaotian No.3 were obviously increased and decreased respectively after priming with pH5.1 chitosan solution.The POD activity was significantly decreased,and MDA content had no significant difference in the shoots of Chaotian No.3 old-aged seeds compared to the control.Concerning the CAT activity in the shoots of the three maize materials,including old-aged seeds,there were no markedly differences between the treatments and the control.Thus,it seems that chitosan is a new promising priming material for maize seed treatment,and no significant difference was found between the two acidic chitosan solutions and both are efficient in improving vigor of maize seeds.
Seed Priming with Chitosan Improves Maize Germination and Seedling Growth in Relation to Physiological Changes under Low Temperature Stress

Abstract:Low temperature stress during germination and early seedling growth is an important constraint of global production of maize. The effects of seed priming with 0.25%, 0.50%, and 0.75% (w/v) chitosan solutions at 15 °C on the growth and physiological changes were investigated using two maize (Zea mays L.) inbred lines, HuangC (chilling-tolerant) and Mo17 (chilling-sensitive). While seed priming with chitosan had no significant effect on germination percentage under low temperature stress, it enhanced germination index, reduced the mean germination time (MGT), and increased shoot height, root length, and shoot and root dry weights in both maize lines. The decline of malondialdehyde (MDA) content and relative permeability of the plasma membrane and the increase of the concentrations of soluble sugars and proline, peroxidase (POD) activity, and catalase (CAT) activity were detected both in the chilling-sensitive and chilling-tolerant maize seedlings after priming with the three concentrations of chitosan. HuangC was less sensitive to responding to different concentrations of chitosan. Priming with 0.50% chitosan for about 60∼64 h seemed to have the best effects. Thus, it suggests that seed priming with chitosan may improve the speed of germination of maize seed and benefit for seedling growth under low temperature stress.
Effect of priming on germination and physiological characteristics of different types of corn seeds under low-temperature stress

Abstract:Effects of three priming methods (hydropriming, sand priming, and KNO3+KH2PO4 solution prim-ing) on the germination and seedling growth of normal corn (‘Nongda 108’), waxy corn (‘Meiyu 3’) and sweet corn (‘Xiangtian 1’) under 5°C low-temperature stress were studied at three stages (before low-temperature stress, after low-temperature stress for 3 d, and after recovering growth at 25°C for 3 d). The results show that the three priming methods had no significant effect on germination percentage, however, significantly improved germination energy, germination index, shoot height and shoot dry and fresh weights, and shortened mean ger-mination time in the three types of corns. The relative conductivity of three types of corns was decreased by hy-dropriming and sand priming, and the relative conductivity of sweet corn was significantly declined by solution priming. The three priming methods increased chlorophyll content of normal corn in 3 stages and sweet corn before low-temperature stress and after recovering growth at 25°C for 3 d, while chlorophyll content of waxy corn was improved only after recovering growth at 25°C for 3 d. Before low-temperature stress and after low-temperature stress, hydropriming enhanced the peroxidase (POD) activity of three types of corn. After low-temperature stress for 3 d, sand priming promoted the catalase (CAT) activity of three types of corn. After recovering growth at 25°C for 3 d, sand priming raised the POD, CAT and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activi-ties of three types of corns, and solution priming increased APX activity of three types of corn. Three priming methods significantly reduced the malondialdehyde (MDA) content of waxy maize and sweet corn after low-temperature stress for 3 d. It suggests that three priming methods could increase seed vigor and improve the chilling tolerant of normal, waxy and sweet corns. Sand priming had advantage in improving seed vigor of waxy corn, and hydropriming showed better improvement for sweet corn. However, there was no significant difference among the three priming methods for normal corn.

Abstract:A priming method called sand priming was developed using sand as a priming solid matrix in present experiment. Seeds were mixed with sands that contained 3.8% (v/w) water and scaled in plastic box and then were primed at 18 degrees C for 72 h. Four varieties of rice were used to investigate the effect of sand priming on germination of direct-sown rice (Oryza sativa L.) in the laboratory. The results showed that the energy of germination, germination percentage, germination index and vigor index were improved in four varieties. Meanwhile, seedling height, root length, number of root and root dry weight were significantly higher than the nonprimed controls. Field experiments showed that the seed establishment and yield in sand primed seeds were significantly increased by 19.8% similar to 22.9% and by 9.8% similar to 31.2%, respectively as compared to soaked seeds without priming. It is indicated that sand priming method may help to improve seedling establishment in direct-sown rice and possible to be used in the field crop production.

Abstract:The study on effect of seed priming on yield and quality of fodder maize was carried out at Main Forage Research Station, Anand Agricultural University, Anand during the rabi season 2020-21. The research comprised of ten treatments and four replications, and it was set up in a randomized block design. The results of the experiments revealed that different seed priming treatments failed to create a significant response on plant population per meter row length at 15 DAS, days to 50% flowering, and plant height at 20 DAS. The growth and yield attributes of fodder maize crop viz., periodical plant height at 40 DAS and at harvest, number of leaves per plant, leaf stem ratio, green fodder yield, dry fodder yield, dry matter, crude protein, acid detergent fiber and Neutral detergent fiber at harvest were significantly affected by different seed priming treatments and recorded significantly higher in treatment of Seed priming with ZnSO4 @ 0.5% for 6 hrs. and also reported maximum net realization with its BCR.

Abstract:Seed priming is a pragmatic, easy approach and an effective technique. It may prove to be an alternate approach to soil and foliar application of micronutrients. In this study, the effect of micronutrient seed priming at different concentrations and combinations was evaluated on the productivity of hybrid maize (DK-6578). For priming maize seeds were soaked for 8 h in various solutions of zinc (0.5%), boron (0.01%), manganese (0.01%), boron + zinc (0.01% + 0.5%), boron + manganese (0.01% + 0.1%), and boron + zinc + manganese (0.01% + 0.5% + 0.1%). For comparison, seeds were also soaked in simple water (distilled), i. e. hydropriming, and untreated seeds were taken as control. Seed priming in all the treatments substantially induced the early emergence of maize compared to control. Likewise, highest grain yield, biological yield, cob length, grain rows per cob, grains per cob and 1000-grain weight were observed in plants raised from primed seeds, while boron + zinc + manganese priming (0.01% + 0.5% + 0.1%) was the best treatment. Similarly, maximum boron (77.60 mg/kg) and protein contents (10.82%) were observed in boron + zinc + manganese (0.01% + 0.5% + 0.1%) primed seeds, followed by boron + zinc (0.01% + 0.5%). In conclusion, different seed priming strategies improved emergence, yield and quality of maize. The combined application of boron, zinc, and manganese (0.01% + 0.5% + 0.1%) for seed priming was the most effective treatment technique.

Abstract:Seed germination is one of the basic and vital stages in the plant life cycle which is affected by many factors. Different techniques can be used to enhance germination and crop yield like seed priming that is considered as a physiological treatment that improves seed performance and provide faster and synchronized germination The objective of this study is to compare the efficacy of different priming methods on the seeds germination of hybrid maize (hybrid Tikrit variety) with tow durations (12, 18 hours) under laboratory conditions. Seeds were subjected to hydro- priming, hormonal priming with gibberellic acid and salicylic acid, priming with liquorice extract, and the interaction among them in comparison with the control (dry seeds). A laboratory screening was conducted at the faculty of Agricultural/ Tikrit University during in March 2021 using a complete randomized design (CRD) with three replicates. The results showed that hydro- priming for 12 hours have recorded a significant increase in the level of most of the germination parameters {first and final seed germination% (86.67%, 84.00%), plumule and radical length (8.750 cm, 6.633 cm), first and final seedling vigor index (136.6, 130.8), speed of germination (1.889 seed/day), response index (-0.0412), mean of seedling fresh weight (0.7120 gm), and seed vigor (16.21)}. The maximum mean seedling dry weight was recorded to the treatment of the interaction with salicylic acid and liquorice extract, and hydro-priming (15.3000 mg) for 18 hours. While the parameter of daily seed growth rate did not give any significant differences. Results proved the effectiveness of the 12 hours hydro- priming treatment than the rest of the treatments.

Abstract:One factor affecting productivity is the quality of seeds with good initial seed vigor indicators, but less than optimum growing environment conditions also affect seeds' growth and initial Vigor. One of the technologies that can improve it is giving priming treatment to the seeds before planting. This study aims to see the effect of priming treatment to improve the quality of Vigor and early growth of 2 composite corn varieties, namely Sukmaraga and Bisma. The research was carried out in the laboratory and the Green House, with the experimental method using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with each seed of the two varieties treated with Hydropriming (soaking seeds before planting) using Ion-Free Water (IFW) for 30 minutes, 12 hours, and 24 hours plus a control treatment without Priming, and priming using PGR made from sodium orthonitrifenol 0.2%, sodium 2,4-dinitrophenol 0.05% both as controls. So there are a total of 10 treatments. The results showed that priming treatment greatly influenced the germination, where all Hydropriming treatments gave average germination above 88%, significantly different from seeds without priming below 82%. The hypocotyl length ratio of Sukmaraga and Bisma corn seeds was also different from the treatment without priming. Seeds with hydropriming for 12 hours showed the best field growth percentage, reaching 96.7% (Sukmaraga variety) and 96.98% (Bisma variety).

Abstract:Poor germination in fodder crops is one of the major reasons responsible for lower than potential green forage yield of cereals. Invigoration treatments aids to promote and accelerate germination, increase the vigour of seedlings, and improve stand establishment in field, vegetable, and horticultural crops. Therefore, a study was carried out to evaluate the effect of different seed invigoration treatments on seed quality parameters viz., germination, field emergence, speed of germination, seedling length, dry weight and seedling vigour in fodder maize (Zea mays L.). The experiment was laid out in factorial completely randomized design with two factors i.e., months and treatments having 5 different seed priming treatment combinations i.e., - Priming with water for 12 hrs., - Priming with NaCl @ 4 g / litre of water for 8 hours., - Priming with Poly Ethylene Glycol solution @ 10g / litre of water for 8 hours., – Priming with GA3 @ 0.2 g / litre of water for 8 hours and - Control (unprimed seeds) and the treatments were replicated four times during Rabi, 2022-23 at the Department of Seed Science and Technology, Seed Research and Technology Centre, College of Agriculture, PJTSAU, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad, Telangana. The results obtained from this study indicate that hormonal priming with GA3 can be successfully employed to improve germination, field emergence, seedling length, dry weight, and seedling vigour in fodder maize (Zea mays L.). At the end of the study, it was observed that hormonal priming with GA3 had a significantly positive influence on mean germination per cent (90%), field emergence (87%), speed of germination (20.221%), seedling length (34.17 cm), dry weight (0.792 g), seedling vigour index-I (3082.05) and seedling vigour index-II (71.42) over the control.

Abstract:Abstract Low seed emergence rate, poor seedling growth and low survival rate of winter rice due to cold spell are very common in Bangladesh. Pre-sowing seed priming could be a viable approach to overcome this problem. A laboratory screening of different priming agents was conducted at the Agro Innovation Laboratory, Department of Agronomy, Bangladesh Agricultural University in November 2018. The experiment comprised two factors. Factor A includes five rice varieties, namely i) BRRI dhan28 ii) BRRI dhan29 iii) BRRI dhan36 iv) BRRI dhan55 and v) Hybrid SL-8H; factor B includes 22 seed priming methods comprised different concentrations of NaCl, KCl CaCl 2 , CuSO 4 , ZnSO 4 , Na 2 MoO 4 , PEG and control (no priming). The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD) with four replications. A positive influence of seed priming on seed emergence rate (%), germination time, seedling vigor and seedling growth (length and dry matter) was evident from this study. Among the priming agents, KCl and CaCl 2 performed best; while priming with NaCl, Na 2 MoO 4 and PEG showed no advantages over no priming for germination rate and seedling vigor & growth indices. In conclusion, pre sowing seed priming approach can be explored as a viable tool for increased seed germination and better seedling growth of winter rice under stress condition.
Influence of Priming on Seed Quality and Seed Health in Sorghum

Abstract:Aims: To achieve sustainable agriculture, it is essential to conduct ongoing research aimed at reducing the reliance on chemical fertilizers. This study investigates the effectiveness of seed priming, either alone or in combination with low doses of fungicides and/or biocontrol agents, to enhance seed quality and to reduce seed infection by improving the rate and uniformity of seed emergence and overcoming diseases. Study Design: Completely randomized design. Place and Duration of Study: Seed Unit, UAS, Raichur, from March 2022 to September 2022. Methodology: Sorghum seeds were surface sterilized with sodium hypochlorite (1 %) for five minutes and then washed thrice with sterile water. Later the seeds were primed with Trichoderma hamatum, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, Paenibacillus polymyxa, Carboxin 37.5 % + thiram 37.5 % (vitavax power), Trichoderma harzianum, Azospirillium and control with the seed to solution ratio of 1:5 for eight hours and then the primed seeds were dried back to original moisture content (24 hrs.) and then used to assess the seed quality parameters. Results: Seed priming with Bacillus amyloliquefaciens resulted in statistically significant improvements in seed germination (95.0%), shoot length (16.9 cm), root length (16.6 cm), seedling length (33.5 cm), speed of germination (20.1), seedling dry weight (339.3 mg), seedling vigour index-I (3183), seedling vigour index-II (32234), lower electrical conductivity (0.35 dS/m) and reduced seed infection (0.6%). In contrast, the control group exhibited significantly lower seed germination (83.0%), shoot length (12.6 cm), root length (11.1 cm), seedling length (23.7 cm), speed of germination (15.2), seedling dry weight (333.2 mg), seedling vigour index-I (1967), seedling vigour index-II (27656), higher electrical conductivity (0.65 dS/m) and increased seed infection (6.8%). Conclusion: Sorghum seeds primed with Bacillus amyloliquefaciens increases the seed quality parameters and reduces seed infection, supporting its use as an effective strategy for enhancing seed performance and promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

Abstract:Endophytes are important microorganisms that enhance the plant's stability through a symbiotic relationship, without any harmful effects and symptoms in the host plant. To study the effect of endophytes on overall performance of COH(M)8 hybrid maize seeds, the present study was conducted with different endophytic seed priming for 12 hrs duration with Beauveria bassiana @ 5% (T2), Metarhizium anisopliae @ 5% (T3) and Bacillus subtilis @ 8% (T4) along with hydro priming (T1) and untreated control (T0). The seed priming treatments with all the above three endophytes enhanced the seed quality parameters, among which M. anisopliae @ 5% (T3) registered maximum increase of germination (4.34%), shoot length (20.73%), root length (15.04%), dry matter production (15.22%) and vigour index (22.68%) over control. Similarly, the seeds primed with M. anisopliae @ 5% (T3) recorded the highest value of dehydrogenase activity (0.441 OD value), α- amylase activity (2.06 mg maltose min-1) and antioxidant activity viz., catalase (1.55 μmol H2O2 min-1 g-1 protein) and peroxidase (0.87 U mg-1protein min-1). Results of this study revealed that the endophytes can enhance overall the seed quality in maize.
Seed priming stimulates germination and early seedling establishment of Corethrodendron multijugum under drought stress

Abstract:Seed priming can alleviate the negative effects of drought stress. The present study focused on exploring the effects of seed priming, drought and their interaction on the germination characteristics of Corethrodendron multijugum . We attempted to standardise an appropriate priming method for C. multijugum seeds by comparing the effects of various priming methods and drought stress on seed germination and seedling establishment to provide theoretical basis and technical support for subsequent cultivation and production. The results indicated that seed priming, drought stress and their interaction significantly ( P < 0.01) affected all seed germination parameters and seedling establishment parameters, and germination was significantly ( P < 0.05) correlated with early seedling establishment under drought stress. Of the different priming agents used in this study, water, 0.5% KMnO 4 , 0.3% H 2 O 2 and 5% PEG-6000 significantly ( P < 0.05) promoted seed germination and seedling establishment in C. multijugum . Among them, 0.5% KMnO 4 was the most effective in alleviating the effects of drought stress on germination and early seedling establishment. Morphologically, the beneficial effects of priming can be attributed to increased seed germination, elongation and biomass accumulation of seedlings.

Abstract:An laboratory experiment was carried out during the year 2020 at the Seed Technology Laboratory of the Crop Department - College of Agricultural Engineering Sciences - University of Baghdad in order to know the effect of seed priming and size of their embryos of different cultivars of maize on the seedling characteristics. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design with four replicates. The first factor included three synthetic cultivars of maize (Al-Maha, Baghdad 3 and Al-Fajr) and Al-Nahrain hybrid. For the second factor, it included the priming of seeds with ASA, CK, GA3, KCL, H 2 O 2 , DW and DS, in addition to the dry seeds (without priming). The seeds were soaked with solutions of these substances for 24 hours and six characteristics related to the germination process were estimated, which were the weight of the seed after stimulation, the weight of the embryo, the time of germination, the length of the radicle and shoot, and its dry weight. The results showed that the seed priming with H 2 O 2 was significantly superior, as it gave the highest average of seed weight, lowest average germination time, longest average radiclelength and highest seedling dry weight (0.336 g, 3.12 days, 15.08 cm and 0.215 g, respectively). The treatment of seeds with ascorbic was superior in giving the highest average weight of the embryo that reached 0.049 gm, the treatment of stimulating the seeds with gibberellin was superior in giving the highest mean of the coleoptile length of 10.79 cm. Al-Maha cultivar excelled in giving it the highest average seed weight, embryo weight, radiclelength and dry weight, as it reached 0.335 g, 0.050 g, 14.42 cm and 0.194 g, respectively. Whereas, the Fajr cultivar was significantly superior by giving the highest average coleoptile length of 9.37 cm. The interaction effect between the study factors was significant in most of the studied traits.
Growth, Yield, Seed and Seedling Quality Parameters of Rapeseed-mustard Varieties under Different Seed Priming Options

Abstract:Rationale: Crop production and quality of produce get affected by drought, stand establishment and low availability of nutrients. Apart from various prevailing methods, seed treatment through priming now-a-days has been found to noticeably improve crop establishment for increasing seed yield and quality. Aim: To study the effect of various seed priming options on rapeseed-mustard varieties. Place of Study: A field experiment was conducted at AB Block Farm, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Kalyani, Nadia, West Bengal, India during winter season of 2017-2018. Methodology: Experiment comprised six rapeseed-mustard varieties (Anushka, Sanchita, TBM-143,TBM-204, Kranti and Pusa Bold) in main plot and five seed priming options (KH2PO4 @ 0.15 mol 100 ml water-1 5 g seeds-1, KNO3 @ 0.1 mol 100 ml water-1 5 g seeds-1, PEG 6000 @ -0.3 MPa 100 ml water-1 5 g seeds-1, hydro priming @ 100 ml 5 g seeds-1 and control) in subplot, replicated thrice in a split plot design. Observations on growth and yield contributing parameters were recorded from the field. Further, various quality parameters of seed and seedlings were evaluated in the laboratory. Data on all the parameters were finally statistically analyzed. Results: Among the varieties, Pusa Bold performed better in terms of growth, yield contributing parameters and seed yield under seed priming through either KH2PO4 @ 0.15 mol 100 ml water-1 5 g seeds-1 or PEG 6000 @ -0.3 MPa 100 ml water-1 5 g seeds-1. Seed and seedling quality parameters such as root and shoot lengths, seedling fresh and dry weights, germination % and vigour index were also improved under the same. Conclusion: Cultivation of mustard variety, Pusa Bold by seed priming through any of those two chemicals (KH2PO4 or PEG 6000) can be recommended for New alluvial zone of West Bengal, India.
Effect of seed priming on growth and yield of late sown wheat (Triticum aestivum) in central plain region of Punjab

Abstract:Poor seed germination affects growth and yield of crop under late sown conditions. Therefore, this research was conducted to study the effect of seed priming on growth and yield of late sown wheat at student's Research Farm, Department of Agriculture, Khalsa College, Amritsar, India during rabi 2020-21 and 2021-22. The experiment was set up in a randomised block design which included 10 treatments and three replications. Late sown variety PBW 752 of wheat was used during experiment. The results showed that using different treatments of seed priming had no significant effect on parameters i.e. test weight, harvest index and protein content but other parameters like plant height, dry matter accumulation, leaf area index, number of tillers, number of effective tillers, spikelets per spike, grains per ear, biological yield, grain yield and straw yield were significantly affected by seed priming. In the treatment of seed priming with potassium nitrate @ 10,000 ppm recorded highest grain yield (34.9 q/ha), biological yield (87.67 q/ha), effective tillers per metre row (50.30), spike length (9.50 cm) and number of grains per spike (38.20). The results of this study allowed us to draw the conclusion that wheat grain production can be improved by seed priming under late sown conditions.

Abstract:Low-input agriculture in marginal areas of developing countries faces considerable challenges during crop development. A key stage in crop growth is seed germination, which is often constrained by abiotic factors such as low water potential, high temperatures and soil crusting, which can result in poor establishment. This is exacerbated by low soil fertility, salinity, drought, pests and diseases, which ultimately leads to reduced yields. Over the last 20 years, the potential of ‘on-farm’ seed priming, a traditional, low-cost technique, consisting of soaking seeds in water prior to sowing, has been applied to different crops and conditions with varying degrees of success. To understand the significance of this potentially transformative agronomic strategy, we have conducted a global meta-analysis of on-farm seed priming by quantifying (i) the rate of emergence, (ii) final emergence and (iii) total yield from 44 published papers on 17 crops across 10 countries. Our results show that on-farm seed priming has a significantly positive effect on crop performance: seeds emerge 22% faster, with an increased final emergence of 11%, with total yields 21% higher than conventionally sown seeds. Furthermore, sub-group analyses demonstrated that on-farm seed priming is more advantageous under stressful abiotic conditions with case studies categorized as being either ‘nutrient deficient’, ‘salinity-stressed’ or ‘dry climates’ gaining the highest yield improvements (22–28%). On-farm seed priming can be particularly beneficial to resource-poor farmers working in low-input agricultural systems where yield potential is limited by intrinsically stressed agronomic environments. Here, we demonstrate for the first time that on-farm seed priming is perfectly adapted to local situations in developing countries. Our results provide the evidence that on-farm seed priming could be effectively adopted by resource-poor farmers as a strategy to increase food security in some of the most marginal agricultural areas.

Seed priming with Metarhizium anisopliae (MetA1) improves physiology, growth and yield of wheat

Abstract:Microorganisms offer a sustainable way to increase crop production and promote eco-friendly farming. The endophytic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae is known for its multiple roles in plant ecosystems, including plant protection, symbiosis, and abiotic stress mitigation. In this study, we evaluated the potential of seed priming with M. anisopliae isolate MetA1 (MA) to enhance germination, photosynthetic efficiency, growth, and yield of two wheat varieties, BARI Gom 26 (BG26) and BARI Gom 33 (BG33) under field conditions. The study demonstrated that MA seed priming significantly improved wheat germination (by 13% and 26.04%) of BG26 and BG33, respectively. Overall, photosynthetic performance, indicated by increased leaf angle, leaf thickness, relative chlorophyll content, and linear electron flow (LEF), quantum yield of Photo System II (Phi2) was increased in MA primed wheat plants, while reducing non-photochemical quenching like NPQt, PhiNO, PhiNPQ of both varieties. These enhancements were attributed to increased shoot biomass (by 215.64% for BG26 and 280.38% for BG33), root biomass (by 141.79% for BG26 and 207.4% for BG33), effective tiller percentage (by 9.17% for BG26 and 5.7% for BG33), spike length (by 25.05% for BG26 and 25.42% for BG33), grain yield parameters such as filled grain percentage (by 23.8% for BG26 and 12.5% for BG33), and grain weight per plant (by 168.62% for BG26 and 119.62% for BG33). The findings of the research demonstrated the potential of M. anisopliae for field use in an agricultural setting, providing a sustainable means of increasing food production.
Seed Priming with Nanoparticles and 24-Epibrassinolide Improved Seed Germination and Enzymatic Performance of Zea mays L. in Salt-Stressed Soil

Abstract:Saline stress is one of the most critical abiotic stress factors that can lessen crops' productivity. However, emerging nanotechnology, nano-fertilizers, and developing knowledge of phytochromes can potentially mitigate the negative effects of saline stress on seed germination. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effects of seed priming either with zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs; 50 and 100 mg L−1) or 24-epibrassinolide (EBL; 0.2 and 0.4 μM) and their combinations on maize (Zea mays L.) grains sown in salt-stressed soil (50 and 100 mM NaCl). Saline stress treatments significantly affected all germination traits and chemical analysis of seeds as well as α-amylase activity. Compared to un-primed seeds, seed priming with ZnO-NPs or EBL and their combinations significantly increased the cumulative germination percentage, germination energy, imbibition rate, increase in grain weight, K+ content, and α-amylase activity, and significantly reduced germination time, days to 50% emergence, Na+ uptake, and Na+/K+ ratio of maize sown in salt-stressed-soil (50 or 100 mM NaCl). The combination of 100 mg ZnO-NPs L−1 + 0.2 μM EBL resulted in the highest improvements for most of the studied traits of maize seeds sown in salt-stressed soil in comparison to all other individual and combined treatments.
