Abstract:Substrate filler is one of the important equipments for mechanization growing seedlings . Mechanized breeding has been developed as a new horticulture technology in recent ten years worldwide . It has become a professional commercial seedling production way in many countries , particularly in Europe and America . Development of substrate filler machine and seedling production line can promote the seedling production in protected horticulture . With the rapid development of modern horticultural production , the demand for substrate filler is increasing dramatically . However , the composition of substrate filler is very complicated in structure . It is difficult to develop a single type of substrate filler to meet the demand of all crop growth . Furthermore , automatic feeding device is complex and expensive in the fierce competition in the growing market . Therefore , people are looking for more convenient and effective seedling medium automatic feeding devices , which can not only fill substrate in plugs , but also mix matrix uniformity according to various specifications . Now , the design , performance testing and filled result of TLZ‐400 type substrate filler were reported . This filler was composed of material tank , lifting device , matrix tray conveying agency , vibration , rotating scraper , bodies brush , and electrical control components . The working principle is that the mixing substrate is transported to plug over and fall into the tray on a conveyor belt after promotion agencies raise , followed by scraper shaving , vibration shaking , and brush cleaning , so as to achieve the purpose of smooth and uniform mixing of substrate in plugs . The purpose was to investigate and confirm the main technical parameters of TLZ‐400 type substrate filler . The technical characteristic parameters ,productivity , and power consumption of TLZ‐400 type substrate filler were measured by using selected perlite ( 50% ) , organic fertilizer and black earth ( 30% ) , and sawdust ( 20% ) as mixed substrate . Substrate uniformity , sample standard deviation , and sample coefficient variation were also analyzed by using substrate sampling methods of 18 36 holes in plugs . Results showed that supporting power of this substrate filler was 1 180 W and the production capacity ranged from 50 to 380 tray/h . When the vibration status was off or on , the total standard deviation was 1 .485 or 1 .247 , and the total coefficient variation was 7 .94% or 6 .70% , respectively . We conclude that the TLZ‐400 type substrate filler is suitable for matrix filler , vibration , cleaning , and recycling . It is ready for seeder sowing after the substrate is uniformly filled in nursery plug .

Abstract:Abstract Aiming at the problems of poor automation and low efficiency in tomato planting, this paper designed a fully automatic rock wool seedling planting machine. We designed the machine’s overall structure according to the agronomic requirements of tomatoes and the actual site. In addition, according to the uncertainty of contact between the rock wool block (RWB) and soil matrix, the corresponding motion behavior model after collision contact was established to predict the motion of RWB. The parameterized modeling of the soil matrix was carried out, and then a structure with an adaptive function was added to the original machine for optimization. The machine was processed, manufactured, and tested. The success rate of colonization was 99.4%, and the efficiency was 1500 per hour. The study can provide a reference for the automatic tomato planting machine design.
Experiment on Transplanting Performance of Automatic Vegetable Pot Seedling Transplanter for Dry Land

Abstract:To improve the efficiency of mechanization in transplanting vegetable seedlings and achieve the automation of vegetable transplanter in dry land, an automatic vegetable pot seedling transplanter for dry land was developed. This transplanter is mainly composed of 2 rotating seedling picking-up mechanisms of planetary gear train with ellipse gears and incomplete non-circular gears, a horizontal and longitudinal intermittent seedling sending device, 2 eccentric disc dibble-type planting apparatuses, and a power transmission system. Two rotating seedling picking-up devices and 2 eccentric disc dibble-type planting apparatuses were symmetrically arranged along the longitudinal surface center of the machine, constituting 2 sets of automatic seedling picking-up and planting systems. The seedlings were provided automatically from 2 standard seedling pots with 128 holes using the horizontal and longitudinal intermittent seedling sending device. The engine drive shaft could transfer power to the principal axis of the apparatus through chain drive to enable the rotating and planting of the apparatus. Meanwhile, the principal axis of the apparatus could transfer the power to the rotating seedling picking-up mechanisms of planetary gear train with ellipse gears and incomplete non-circular gear and intermittent seedling sending device. Subsequently the intermittent seedling sending device could move horizontally and longitudinally to send the seedling pots to the target place, where the seedling picking-up mechanism took the seedlings from the pot to the eccentric disc dibble-type planting apparatus. To test the performance of this automatic vegetable pot seedling transplanter for dry land, the experiments were conducted in the test field where the soil condition met the mechanical industry standard in People's Republic of China Dry Land Planting Machinery (JB/T 10291-2013). The tomato seedlings (ZheZa 809) used in this experiment were cultivated in the standard seedling pots with 128 holes and transplanted at the age of 35 days with an average height of 150 mm. The seedling sending, picking-up, delivering and planting were all carried out at a constant transplanting frequency by adjusting the speed of the input belt pulley of the walking gear-box. The seedling transplanting efficiency was tested at the low speeds of 45, 60, 75 and 84 plants/min, respectively, as well as at the high speed of 96 plants /min. The coefficient of variation for planting spacing, missing transplanting rate, qualified rate of planting depth and qualified rate of transplanting were determined according to the mechanical industry standard Dry Land Planting Machinery(JB/T10291-2013). The seedling-standing ratio was calculated based on the Technical Specifications of Quality Evaluation for Rape Transplanter (NY/T 1924-2010) according to the standards for agriculture industry in People's Republic of China. The results showed that the coefficient of variation for planting spacing and the missing transplanting rate increased slightly at the range of 6.6%-8.9% and 1.7%-2.8% accordingly when increasing the planting frequency from 45 to 96 plants/min. However, the qualified rate of planting depth, the qualified rate of planting perpendicularity and the qualified rate of transplanting decreased slightly in the range of 97.5%-98.9%, 96.7%-97.8%, and 91.1%-94.7% with the increasing of planting frequency. The coefficient of variation for planting spacing, the missing transplanting rate, the qualified rate of planting depth and the qualified rate of planting all met the requirements of the machinery industry standards (JB/T 10291-2013), and the qualified rate of planting perpendicularity was also within the specified value in the standards for agriculture industry (NY/T 1924-2010). The automatic seedling-sending device, the seedling picking-up device and the planting apparatus of the automatic transplanter coordinated well with each other to complete the process for sending seedlings, picking up seedlings, delivering seedling, planting and soil covering automatically.
Optimized Design and Experiment of a Self-Covering Furrow Opener for an Automatic Sweet Potato Seedling Transplanting Machine

Abstract:The yield and quality of sweet potatoes are significantly influenced by the transplantation posture of sweet potato seedlings. The performance of the sweet potato seedling transplanting opener directly affects the transplantation posture of sweet potato seedlings. In order to improve the yield and quality of sweet potatoes, this study proposes a joint simulation method based on discrete element and flexible multi body dynamics (DEM-FMBD), which optimizes the structure of a self-covering soil opener. By exploring the influence of self-covering soil trenchers on the planting depth and posture of sweet potato seedlings during horizontal transplantation, it was determined that the influencing factors of the experiment were wing spacing, soil reflux height, and soil reflux length. Based on the DEM-FMBD coupling simulation platform, single factor, and quadratic rotation orthogonal experiments were carried out. According to the results of the simulation test, the effect of the interaction of test factors on planting depth and planting attitude was analyzed by the response surface method. Finally, the optimal structural parameter combination was obtained by a multi-objective optimization method: the spacing of the wings was 58 mm, the height of the soil backflow port was 71 mm, and the length of the soil backflow port was 163 mm; thus, the quality of transplanting is improved effectively. This study provides the method and theory reference for the study of sweet potato transplanting.

Abstract:Based on the characteristics of rice seeds,this study analyzes industrial processing technique,and develops the key equipment for the germination rice plant production.Soaking and pregermination adopt cold and hot water circulating system with integrated intelligent instrument control,which ensures the germination temperature effect;buds passivation uses high temperature and high pressure steam,which ensures that enzyme body can be fast inactivation,and has the sterilization effect;drying uses the greenhouse type solar drying,which can save energy and ensure bud rice commodity.The production test results show that the performance of equipment conforms to industrialized production requirement with bud rice.

Abstract:Owing to the rapid development of greenhouse planting technology,aiming at the low efficiency of artificial seedlings greenhouse transplantation of breeding and seedlings destruction,a kind of automatic plug seedlings transplant was designed,and theoretical calculation and experiment on the transplant machine mixing,transportation organization,cutting soil institutions and its power consumption were conducted.The results showed that the spiral extrusion institution was fit for article mud generated quick-moving,cut into parts.Automatic plug seedlings transplant could reduce the labor intensity of the farmers,improve the survival rate of seedlings.Prototype test showed that the theoretical analysis and the prototype test were identical,that the structure was reasonable of this whole equipment,had very good transplantation effect,achieved the expected design goal.
Design of and Experiment with Seedling Selection System for Automatic Transplanter for Vegetable Plug Seedlings

Abstract:In the process of vegetable plug seedling cultivation, packaging, and transportation, there may be missing, unhealthy or injured seedlings in the tray, which results in a missed planting or a low seedling survival rate after automatic transplanting. In this study, a seedling selection system with the function of seedlings identification, week seedlings elimination, and missing seedlings supplement was developed for an automatic transplanter. A plug seedling identification system based on a machine vision was used to detect vegetable plug seedlings based on the area characteristics of plug seedlings, stem leaves and plug bodies. The identification results were transmitted to a programmable logic controller (PLC), which controlled a nozzle to eliminate the unqualified seedlings from the conveyor belt lattice. When the empty conveyor belt lattice reaches the seedling throwing funnel, the rear conveyor belt lattice with the plug seedling is accelerated to ensure the continuity of seedlings supply. The adaptive fuzzy PID control algorithm was used to control the stepper motor of the conveyor belt to realize accurate seedling conveying and a seedling supplement. Using 30 days pepper plug seedlings as experimental seedlings, a comparative field experiment was carried out to evaluate the performance of the seedling selection system. The results showed that when the seedling selection system was turned on and the seedling extracting frequencies were 60, 80, and 100 plants/min, the success rates of plug seedling identification were 98.84%, 98.38%, and 96.99%, and the robust seedling rates were 98.05%, 97.78%, and 95.83%. The robust seedling rates were increased by 15.64%, 16.07%, and 13.89%, respectively, in contrast to turning off the seedling selection system.
Design and Optimization of a Machine-Vision-Based Complementary Seeding Device for Tray-Type Green Onion Seedling Machines

Abstract:Green onion (Allium fistulosum L.) is mainly available as factory-produced seedlings. Although factory seedling production is highly automated, miss-seeding during the seeding process considerably affects subsequent transplanting and the final yield. To solve the problem of miss-seeding, the current main method is manual complementary seeding, which is labor-intensive and inefficient work. In this study, an automatic machine-vision-based complementary seeding device was proposed to reduce the miss-seeding rate and as a replacement of manual complementary seeding. The device performs several main functions, including the identification of miss-seeding holes, control of seed case movement, and the seed uptake and release from the seed suction nozzle array. A majority-mechanism-based miss-seeding tray hole rapid-detection method was proposed to enable the real-time identification of miss-seeding tray holes in the tray under high-speed moving conditions. The structural parameters of the vacuum-generated seed suction nozzle were optimized through numerical simulations and orthogonal experiments, and the seed suction nozzle array and seed case were produced using 3D-printing technology. Finally, the complementary seeding device was installed on the tray-type green onion seeding machine and the effectiveness of the complementary seeding was confirmed by experiments. The results revealed that the average values of the precision, recall, and F1 scores for identifying miss-seeding tray holes were 98.48%, 97.00%, and 97.73%, respectively. The results revealed that the rate of miss-seeding tray holes decreased from 5.37% to 0.89% after complementary seeding.

Abstract:Transplanting healthy seedlings from high density to low-density trays for further growth, and replacing bad or missing plants with healthy ones are important tasks for seedlings cultivation in plug tray in greenhouse. Developing automated seedling transplanter to take the place of labor to do these repetion and heavy tasks are meaningful. Research progresses which include four dimensions key technology of automated transplanter are presented in this paper. They are suitable seedling plug states for mechanical transplanting, end-effector design and testing, methods for seedling quality evaluation based on machine vision techniques, and seedling transplanting path optimization. Five parameters which include clamping needle angle, gripper needles, plug moisture content, taproot length, and bulk material proportion were tested separately to demonstrate the affection for plug compressive resistance. A plugging and clamping end-effector with two cylinder drivers was developed and tested with more than 95.8% success rate. Leaf area calculation methods were developed to evaluate seedling quality based on machine vision technology. Leaves overlapping problem was solved with more than 98.6% identification accuracy for vegetable seedling. Genetic algorithm was introduced into the transplanting path optimization. And the length has been shortened 8.5% and 3.7 m for transplanting fifty seedlings which compared with fixed sequential method. This knowledge is useful for developing automated seedling transplanter with effective end-effector, seedling detection, and transplanting strategy.

Abstract:There are some problems with the manual flower transplant process, especially high labour intensity, low transplant efficiency and high labour costs. In this study, an automatic transplant device was designed for use in a self-propelled flower transplanter to address these problems. The machine integrates a tray conveyor device, mechanical transplant arm, transplant manipulator and hole-digging device. A mechanical model of the "seedling substrate-manipulator needle" interaction was established, and a transplant manipulator with two needles was designed. In addition, it was determined that three factors had a significant impact on the success rate of seedling transplant ( Y 1 ), i.e., the water content ( X 1 ), seedling height ( X 2 ) and penetration angle ( X 3 ). According to a single-factor experiment, the data range of these three factors was determined. The ternary quadratic regression orthogonal centre of rotation combination experimental method was used to conduct experiments. The interaction effects of the factors on the success rate index were explored, and a regression model of the influencing factors and evaluation index was constructed. The working parameter combinations were specified to be 25% for X 1 , 50 mm for X 2 , and 12° for X 3 . The results of a verification experiment showed that Y 1 was 92.5%, which was slightly different from the predicted value (93.2%). The automatic flower transplant device developed in this study can effectively improve the transplant operation efficiency.

Abstract:When the driven stubble-breaking and anti-blocking no-till planter operates in the Southwest China, the stubble-breaking blades will impact with the ground as they cut through the soil and straw stubble, causing the planter to vibrate. This results in poor performances of the seed discharge by seed discharger and the seed guide by the seed guide tube. Based on the principle of spiral conveying, a soybean shaftless spiral seed discharge and seed delivery device was designed. The optimum seed filling size and speed range of the spiral blade were obtained by analyzing the size, force, and motion of soybean seeds of "ZhongHuang 37". The quadratic regression orthogonal rotation test and response surface method were used to analyze the operating parameters of the shaftless spiral seed discharge and seed delivery device by joint EDEM (Discrete Element Method)-RecurDyn simulation. The optimum parameters were obtained: the spacing of spiral was 11.4 mm, spiral outer radius was 5.5 mm, spiral inner radius was 2.9 mm and rotation speed was 10.4 r·s −1 . Based on simulation and optimization results, the device was trialed and its field performance was tested. The results showed that at a surface slope of 16.1°, an average surface flatness of 8.9 cm, an average planter vibration frequency of 75.2 Hz, and an average amplitude of 7.2 mm, the average seeding qualification index, multiple index, missing seeding index, and damage index of the shaftless spiral seed discharge and seed delivery device were 92.6%, 5.03%, 2.4% and 0.92%, respectively, which were in line with the local agronomic requirements. The designed soybean shaftless spiral seed discharge and seed delivery device meets the requirements of the quality of no-till seeding and can provide a reference for the design and improvement of seed discharger and seed guide tube under poor ground leveling and long-distance seed delivery conditions.

Abstract:This study developed an axial air-suction drum seed-metering device without a special vacuum pump and associated pipeline facilities, greatly simplifying the structure of the air-suction drum seed-metering device, which aimed to solve the problems of complex structure and difficult maintenance of traditional air suction drum seed-metering device. The geometric model of the seed-metering device was established by SOLIDWORKS. In addition, numerical simulation tests were carried out on the seed-metering device based on CFD to verify the feasibility of the theoretical operation of the seed-metering device. The seed-metering device was processed and a test bench was built for physical testing, which verified the feasibility of the actual operation of the seed-metering device. The bench test results showed that when the fan speed reached 2100 rpm, the adsorption rate of the seed-metering device on tomato seeds, pepper seeds, and eggplant seeds reached more than 86.39%,87.22%, and 93.06%, respectively. Besides, when the fan speed reached 2400 rpm, the adsorption rate of the seed-metering device on tomato seeds, hot pepper seeds, and eggplant seeds all reached more than 95%, which demonstrated that the seed-metering device has good seed suction performance despite its straightforward design.
Design, Integration, and Experiment of Transplanting Robot for Early Plug Tray Seedling in a Plant Factory

Abstract:In the context of plant factories relying on artificial light sources, energy consumption stands out as a significant cost factor. Implementing early seedling removal and replacement operations has the potential to enhance the yield per unit area and the per-energy consumption. Nevertheless, conventional transplanting machines are limited to handling older seedlings with well-established roots. This study addresses these constraints by introducing a transplanting workstation based on the UR5 industrial robot tailored to early plug tray seedlings in plant factories. A diagonal oblique insertion end effector was employed, ensuring stable grasping even in loose substrate conditions. Robotic vision technology was utilized for the recognition of nongerminating holes and inferior seedlings. The integrated robotic system seamlessly managed the entire process of removing and replanting the plug tray seedlings. The experimental findings revealed that the diagonal oblique-insertion end effector achieved a cleaning rate exceeding 65% for substrates with a moisture content exceeding 70%. Moreover, the threshold-segmentation-based method for identifying empty holes and inferior seedlings demonstrated a recognition accuracy surpassing 97.68%. The success rate for removal and replanting in transplanting process reached an impressive 95%. This transplanting robot system serves as a reference for the transplantation of early seedlings with loose substrate in plant factories, holding significant implications for improving yield in plant factory settings.

Abstract:The planter is designed for solving the problem of Ginseng seedlings, which not only meets the requirements of small particle seed metering, but also realizes zero-speed direct-inserted sowing, and can intelligently as well as automatically control the working performance of the whole machine, adapting to various sowing environmental conditions. The equipment is designed for seeding and breeding of the Ginseng seedlings, which is also possible to multiply the various grain-type plants by changing the size of the seeding device. The power system uses a non-polluting battery as power source, and the power is distributed to every moving mechanism by a speed reduction mechanism. The total mechanical equipment is light in weight, making it easy to operate and lowering the cost. The outstanding feature of this research is that the designed product can detect the depth of the seeding hole according to the control system in real-time. In order to prevent the ground conditions from affecting the depth of the hole, the suspension system is designed as a controllable spring suspension to avoid the leakage and invalid seeding. The stiffness and height of the suspension are more adapted to the sowing conditions and meet the sowing requirements.

Abstract:In order to solve the problems of low efficiency of fertilization and spraying in the hilly mountains of China, a vehicle-mounted fertilization and spraying machine was designed. The whole structure and working principle of the machine were described, and the key components of fertilization and spraying are designed. The kinetics and kinematics of fertilizer particles and droplets were modeled by theoretical analysis of their motion characteristics in the air. The fertilization and variable spraying control system based on the core controller MCU (Microcontroller Unit) was set up. And the system can adjust the rotational speed of the disc and can automatically change the spraying volume by real-time detection of forward speed to achieve a constant spraying volume per unit area. The test results showed that: when the disc speed was greater than 90 r/min, the uniformity coefficient of variation was less than 15%, which satisfied the operational requirements; the uniformity coefficient of variation reached the minimum value of 10.03% when the disc rotation speed was 180 r/min, and the best fertilization performance was achieved at this time. In the spraying system, the actual spraying volume increased with the increased forward speed, and the relative error between the theoretical flow rate and the actual flow rate was 6.25% at most, and the average error was 5.94%, which could achieve the purpose of variable spraying. The research results can provide technical reference for the design and development of fertilization and spraying machinery in hilly areas.

Abstract:In order to solve the problems of easy seed shedding and poor seed population mobility during sowing, a precision seed metering tray for edible sunflowers with seed guide strips was designed in this paper. This article aims to adjust the adsorption posture of sunflower seeds by designing three types of structures: triangular seed guide strip, rectangular seed guide strip, and diamond seed guide strip. Seed population motion simulation and seeding performance experiments were conducted on the seeder. The experimental results show that adding a triangular seed guide strip to the seeding tray has the best disturbance effect on the seed population, with the highest proportion of seeds in the first adsorption stance seed (the seed centroid was adsorbed) and the highest qualification index. The working parameters for the best seed metering performance were obtained: the rotating speed of the seed metering disc was 8.41 r/min, and the vacuum degree was 3.5 kPa.
Design and Optimization of End-Effector for Automatic Plug Seedling Transplanter in Greenhouses

Abstract:With the popularization of seedling nursery, automatic transplanters become very important in greenhouses. Design of end-effector is a key technology for transplanting seedling plug. An efficient end-effector with only one drive cylinder was designed. This end-effector could clamp the plug the same time with the four needles penetrating into the nutritional growth media. The depth into media and the verticality of needles could be adjusted conveniently for different seedling trays. The parameters were optimized based on Visual Basic. A virtual prototype model was established based on the obtained optimal parameters and simulated in ADAMS 2012. The end-effector was verified to be efficient with 98% success rate and 22% harm rate. Seedling plugs in trays with a peat: vermiculite: perlite mixture (6:3:1, v/v/v), big growth and about 76.7% moisture content are more suitable for transplanting. And seedlings with slender stem or not in the center of the cell were more vulnerable.

Abstract:Advances in Mechanical Engineering, Volume 16, Issue 3, March 2024. At present, rice potted seedling transplanting machine is mostly suitable for high-speed, large seedlings and large plant distance rice transplanting. In order to adapt to the transplanting of different types of rice potted seedlings, this study carried out theoretical research and institutional design for transplanting rice potted seedlings suitable for small seedlings and small plant spacing. A 2R open-chain rice potted seedling transplanting mechanism with two non-circular gears meshing to achieve the ideal transplanting posture was developed, and an optimization software for potted seedling transplanting was developed by establishing the kinematic model of the transplanting mechanism, which simulated the motion trajectory and attitude of the transplanting arm during the transplanting process. Through the optimization of the optimization design software parameters, a set of parameters that meet the requirements of transplanting rice potted seedlings in the rear insert rice potted are obtained, a transplanting mechanism suitable for walking rice potted seedling transplanting machine is designed and developed, and the experiments of rice potted seedling picking, conveying and planting are completed. The success rate of the designed walk-type rice potted seedling transplanting mechanism on the bench was 96.7%, and the qualification rate of the whole machine transplanting test was 89.1%.
