Abstract:A new species of Anthurium Schott (Araceae) is described, belonging to section Belolonchium (Schott) Engl. Anthurium dairon-cardenasii López-Flor., Croat & Marco Correa is dedicated in honor of the great botanist Dairon Cardenas López, who dedicated his life to the study of the Amazon. The species was recorded in Caquetá, Colombia, in a lower montane wet forest in the framework of the Caquetá BIO project.

Abstract:The neotropical genus Anthurium has approximately 1500 species with a wide range of inflorescence variation, including spathe coloration. The morphological character of "black spathes" is found in several Anthurium , including some species occurring in the forests of Manizales and Villamaría, Caldas Department, Colombia, whose taxonomic identity is uncertain. In this study, the taxonomic status of the black-spathed anthuriums from the Manizales and Villamaría forests was evaluated using a combination of macro- and micro-morphological characters and genomics, to determine if there are differences between the morphotypes. Twelve macro-morphological characters were useful to distinguish the species, including the size (length / width) and shape of the leaf blade and the spathe, the length and diameter of the peduncle, and the length of the spadix. Among micro-morphological characters, it was found that stomata size could be informative to separate the studied species. Based on the molecular and morphological evidence, it was concluded that the two species of black-spathed Anthurium distributed in the forests of Manizales and Villamaría are: A. caramantae and A. caldasii , the latter of which is newly described. The description of this new species has direct implications for conservation.

Abstract:Anthurium tacotalpense a new species of genus Anthurium sect. Andiphilum from Tabasco, Mexico is described and illustrated. The new species is morphologically similar to Anthurium cerrobaulense but it differs from that species in having adaxially flattened petioles, spadix up to twice as long and immature berries green, orange when mature.

Abstract:Coastal vegetation will be the first areas to be directly affected by rising sea levels as a result of climate change. Thus, it is urgent to know and disseminate information about their plant diversity, especially those that are already known to be impacted by other threat factors. Here we present two new critically endangered Anthurium sect. Urospadix species from the restingas of Bahia, Brazil: A. bellissimum and A. itacarense. Descriptions, illustrations, photos in vivo, as well as discussion on the conservation status and related species are provided.

Abstract:A new species of Octomeria was found during an orchid research expedition in the southern Ecuadorian Amazon. Octomeria jimenezii is described and illustrated, and information on its distribution, habitat and conservation status is provided. The newly proposed taxon is morphologically similar to O. pacii, from which it differs by the lower lateral lobes, with an obtuse to subacute angle to the anterior margin.

Abstract:A new species of Burmeistera (Campanulaceae, Lobelioideae) from the Pacific slope of the Northwestern Andes of Colombia, in the Antioquia and Chocó departments, is described. Burmeistera luciae is distinguished by being a hemiepiphytic herb with scandent and glabrous stems; ebracteate peduncle, obconic hypanthium, and its most particular feature, the filiform, ascending, and curved calyx lobes in anthesis; corolla lobes forming an obtuse angle in relation to the tube, falcate; ventral anthers barbate; ellipsoid berries that turn a striking fuchsia color when mature. These characters differentiate it from Burmeistera serraniaguae, B. succulenta, and B. crocodila, the three most morphologically similar species that also inhabit the humid Andean regions of the Chocó biogeographic region between Colombia and Ecuador. Additional comments related to its distribution, etymology, and conservation status are presented.

Abstract:We describe Croton maranonensis Riina & Martín-Muñoz sp. nov., a species in Croton section Julocroton (Mart.) G.L.Webster from the seasonally dry tropical forests and shrublands of the inter-Andean valleys. This species is a small shrub occurring along the Marañón river valley in Peru and similar dry areas in southern Ecuador. We surveyed morpho-anatomical characters of the new species and closely related taxa. To confirm the placement of the new species in C . section Julocroton , we conducted a molecular phylogenetic analysis including three accessions of the new species and selected representatives of section Julocroton and related groups within Croton L. Micro- and macro-morphological evidence, and molecular data support C. maranonensis sp. nov. as an independent lineage within the C . section Julocroton clade. We compared the new species with morphologically similar species in the same section that also occur in the Andean region, including C. flavispicatus Rusby, C. triqueter Lam., and C. hondensis (H.Karst.) G.L.Webster.

Abstract:A new species of Triolena, endemic to Colón Province, Panama, is described and illustrated. The specimens of this taxon were previously identified as Triolena lanceolata , but closer inspection has shown them to be morphologically and geographically distinct. Triolena anisophylla K.Samra & Michelang. grows on rocks and tree trunks along rivers in Colón Province. This species is distinguishable by its strongly anisophyllous leaves and unique trichomes on the adaxial surface of the leaves. A complete description, distribution map, preliminary conservation assessment, taxonomic notes, and regional key are provided.

Abstract:A new species of Passiflora belonging to the subgenus Passiflora (supersection Stipulata, section Kermesinae) is described and illustrated from living material and herbarium specimens. Passiflora pitalensis is similar to P. lehmannii, and it can be recognized primarily by its petiole green, leaves with broader lobes, peduncle green, bract lanceolate, corona filaments in 5 series with outer filaments in 2 series, fruit ovoid, and seed margin dentate. This species is rare and endemic to Colombia in the Andean region at elevations ranging from 1,749–2,027 m and should be considered Endangered (EN) due to its restricted occurrence with a small population size of no more than 90 individuals.

Abstract:The Andean forests of Colombia harbor high plant biodiversity, especially orchids. Here, we propose and describe a new species of Campylocentrum from the cloud forests of the eastern Andean slopes of Caquetá, Colombia. The new species resembles C. alvesii, from which it differs by the longer lip with obtuse lateral lobes, and C. asplundii, from which it differs by inflorescences shorter than the leaves, trilobed lip, and strongly recurved spur.

Abstract:Two new species of Paepalanthus (Eriocaulaceae) from the Cerrado hotspot in central Brazil are described and illustrated. Paepalanthus avacanoeiro Trovó & R. Silva-Oliveira sp. nov. occurs in the Chapada dos Veadeiros region, growing on quartzite rocky soils. The species is similar to P. urbanianus, distinguished mainly by being a more robust species with pilose and patent leaves with blackish base and ciliated margin, by its reproductive axis covered by remotely disposed bracts with acuminate apex, and by its inflorescence with fewer scapes. It is currently known from two subpopulations occurring just outside of the local conservation units and is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR). Paepalanthus burle-marxii Trovó sp. nov. is distributed in the vicinities of Brasília, Pirenópolis, Luziânia, and Santo Antônio do Descoberto. It is known from many historical and recent collections inhabiting typical open grasslands, usually over argillaceous-rocky soils. It is distinguished from P. linearis, its most similar species, by its glabrous and wider leaves with membranaceous margin, its narrower capitula with few flowers and dark castaneous involucral bracts, and by the pilosity of the pistillate flower sepals. It is assessed as Vulnerable (VU). Line drawings, photos taken in the field, distribution maps, and comments are provided alongside its conservation status and IUCN red list categories.

Abstract:During the UFMT Herbarium collection study, an undescribed species of Goodyerinae (Orchidaceae) was found on the banks of the Culuene River, a tributary of the Alto Xingu basin, state of Mato Grosso, Southern Brazilian Amazon. We described and illustrated Microchilus culuenensis, a species morphologically related to M. amazonicus, M. juruenensis and M. stigmatopterus, which can be differentiated from them by a set of characteristics: narrow-lanceolate leaves, lip with an oblong callus and truncated at the mesochile, presence of a rounded, bilobed callus in the center of the epichile, and a rounded apex of the lobes of epichile. The new species is classified as Data Deficient (DD) regarding the conservation status.

It was found in terra-firme and floodplain forests in the Brazilian states of Amazonas and Pará. We provide a formal description of the new species, images, and notes on distribution, habitat, phenology, flower visitors and preliminary conservation status. We compare it with C. cristatum and C. barbatum, both sympatric and morphologically most similar to the new species. It was preliminarily classified in the Endangered (EN) category according to IUCN criteria based on the extent of occurrence, area of occupation, number of occurrence locations and the risks that the known populations are exposed to (deforestation and predatory collection).

Abstract:Four new species of Sciodaphyllum (Araliaceae) from Ecuador are described, S. balslevii, S. borchsenii, S. oellgaardii and S. pedersenii, each named in honor of a Danish botanist who collected extensively in the country in the late 20th century while contributing to the multi‐decade collaborative botanical research program run by Aarhus University, the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador, and the Universidad Nacional de Loja. These new taxa increase to 27 the total number of described species in Ecuador belonging to Sciodaphyllum (whose members were formerly included in Schefflera J.R.Forst. & G.Forst.), which also has an additional 75 new species that remain to be described. Color photos are provided for three of the species along with a scan of the holotype of the fourth taxon. Distribution maps are provided along with preliminary risk of extinction assessments (following the IUCN Red List criteria); S. balslevii is assessed as Least Concern (LC), whereas S. borchsenii and S. oellgaardii are Endangered (EN), and S. pedersenii is Vulnerable (VU).

Abstract:Recent exploratory field expeditions to the western slopes of the Ecuadorian Andes resulted in the discovery of a new species of Amalophyllon ( Gesneriaceae ). Amalophyllon miraculum J.L.Clark, sp. nov. is described from two localities in the Centinela region in the Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas province. The new species is differentiated from congeners by the pendent habit, basal rosette of leaves, leaf blades with deeply serrate margins, and miniature size. Based on IUCN guidelines, a preliminary conservation status is assigned as Critically Endangered ( CR ).

Abstract:A new species of Meriania, from the Cordillera del Condor in Ecuador is described and illustrated here. With this new addition, the number of species of the genus increases to 32 in this country. Meriania urdialesii has few-flowered, pendulous inflorescences with paraclades in regular dichasia, reddish-orange campanulate flowers, 10-winged hypanthium, and isomorphic stamens with connectives that are not prolonged below the thecae. In this paper, we compare the new species with the most similar species that also feature ornamented hypanthia: Meriania campii, M. costata, and M. sumatika. In addition, the taxonomic similarities of the new entity are discussed, and information about its distribution, habitat, and conservation status is provided.

Abstract:During our investigation of the genetic and morphological variation within the distribution range of Paepalanthus calvus, we observed that specimens from Juiz de Fora municipality, Minas Gerais (Brazil) were morphologically divergent. Through genome-wide analyses using MIG-seq and detailed morphological comparisons, we were able to establish consistent differences between P. calvus and the Juiz de Fora specimens, which supported the recognition of a new species, Paepalanthus salimenae sp. nov. This new species is primarily distinguished by the narrow leaves; trichomes on the leaves, spathes, and scapes; densely pilose involucral bracts; and the tufted apex of some floral organs. Paepalanthus salimenae exhibits low genetic diversity and strong population structure. A preliminary conservation risk assessment suggests this species as Critically Endangered, highlighting the urgent need for conservation efforts to protect its habitat and intraspecific diversity. We provide photographs, line drawings and additional commentaries on the distribution, habitat, and morphological affinities of P. salimenae to congeneric taxa.
