Abstract:Gastrodia gunatillekeorum, a new species in the family Orchidaceae, is described and illustrated from a tropical lowland rainforests of Sri Lanka. It is morphologically close to G. spatulata which is endemic to Indonesia owing to the white flower front with yellowish-orange colour on the inner wall of perianth tube and free part of perianth tube reflexed backwards. However, these two species can be very well differentiated on the basis of spathulate to linear petals which are shorter than sepals, fused only at the base and present inside the perianth tube; labellum elongate-elliptic and column broadest in the middle part in G. spatulata, whereas petals as long as sepals with apical 1/3rd part free (rest fused with sepals) and reflexed backwards, labellum rhomboid in shape, column broadest towards the apex in G. gunatillekeorum. Taxonomic account, line drawing, color photographs and conservation assessment are provided for the new species.

Abstract:As the first step in the taxonomic study of the tribe Gastrodieae (Orchidaceae), two new species, Gastrodia munasinghae and G. thilakapremae are described here from Sri Lanka based on the distinct morphological differences and long-term field observations. Detailed taxonomic descriptions along with the line drawings, color plates, notes on habitat and ecology, distribution and conservation status, phenology and pollination ecology as well as morphological comparison to the other Gastrodia species in Sri Lanka are also discussed. Both species are endemic to the Island and are assessed as Critically Endangered according to the IUCN Red List criteria. Furthermore, notes are provided along with a distribution map for field identification of all Gastrodia species in Sri Lanka.

The species is unique within the genus in having two oblong–linear calli which are parallelly arranged along the margins of the claw of the labellum, and white flowers. Abstract:Gastrodia Brown (1810: 330) (Orchidaceae, Epidendroideae, Gastrodieae) is composed of approximately 90 species with a broad Old World distribution (Pridgeon et al. 2005, Chen et al. 2009, Cribb et al. 2010, Huang et al. 2015, Hsu et al. 2016, Jin et al. 2017, Aung et al. 2018, Suetsugu 2017, Suetsugu et al. 2018). During a survey of native plants in Fujian Province, an unknown species of Gastrodia was collected in August 2018 from the evergreen broad-leaved forest in Wuyishan National Park. A detailed examination of the specimens with similar species morphologically, G. fontinalis Lin (1987: 129), G. major Averyanov (2006: 21), G. punctata Averyanov (2006: 21) and G. huapingensis Huang, Hu & Liu (2015: 290), and two other species recorded from Fujian, G. elata Blume (1856: 174) and G. wuyishanensis Li & Liu (2007: 354), we confirmed it as a new species.

Abstract:Gastrodia Brown (1810: 330; Gastrodieae, Epidendroideae) is a mycoheterotrophic leafless genus that is distributed throughout the temperate and tropical regions of Asia, Oceania, Madagascar and Africa (Cribb et al. 2010, Hsu & Kuo 2010, Suetsugu et al. 2018a) and characterized by fleshy tubers, united tepals and two mealy pollinia that lack caudicles (Cribb et al. 2010, Hsu & Kuo 2010, Suetsugu et al. 2018a,b). Several recent studies have re-examined the diversity of Gastrodia in many Asian countries (Hsu et al. 2012, 2016, Ong & O’Byrne 2012, Tan et al. 2012, Suetsugu 2013b, 2014, 2016, 2017, Huang et al. 2015, 2018, Tsukaya & Hidayat 2016, Metusala & Supriatna 2017, Pelser et al. 2016, Suetsugu et al. 2018a,b). As a result, the genus now comprises ca. 100 species, thereby making it the most diverse mycoheterotrophic genus (Hsu et al. 2016, Suetsugu 2017, Suetsugu et al. 2018a,b). However, it is likely that the distribution and diversity of Gastrodia species remain underestimated because plants are easily overlooked in the field due to their short flowering seasons and small size (Hsu et al. 2016, Suetsugu 2017, Suetsugu et al. 2018b).

Abstract:Gastrodia kachinensis, a new species of Orchidaceae, is described and illustrated from Putao, Kachin State, Myanmar. It is morphologically similar to G. gracilis, presumably its nearest relative, but can be easily distinguished from the latter by having perianth tube with punctate outer surface, verrucose outer surface of sepal lobe, orbicular petals, ovate-elliptic lip with truncate apex and auriculate-clawed base, glabrous lip apex with a pair of twin protuberance-like lamellae and column with a pair of blade-like lateral wings and acute stelidia at apex. Identification key and colour photographs are provided. A preliminary risk-of-extinction assessment, according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria, is given for the new species.

Abstract:Begonia pseudoedulis, a new species in Begonia sect. Platycentrum (Klotzsch) A.DC. (Begoniaceae) from southern Guangxi of China, is here described and illustrated. It morphologically resembles B. edulis H.Lév. and B. dielsiana E.Pritz. ex Diels but differs easily by its hairy petioles and inflorescences, and red hispidulous flower tepals, ovary and capsules. The molecular phylogenetic analysis based on ITS supported that the new species was a monophyletic lineage, separating from both B. dielsiana and B. edulis. Due to its isolated distribution with several small populations, which are possibly disturbed by human activities, the species is considered as “Near Threatened” (NT) according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

Abstract:Begonia scorpiuroloba sp. nov., a new species in Begonia sect. Platycentrum (Begoniaceae) from southern Guangxi of China, is described and illustrated. Morphologically, it is mostly similar to B. pedatifida, but differs clearly by its narrower lobes, denser hairs on leaf surface, obtuse angle of leaf base, subequal tepals of female flowers and late flowering. This new species is endemic to Guangxi and is assigned to Endangered (EN) according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria.

Abstract:Gastrodia longistyla, a new species of Orchidaceae (Gastrodieae) from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated.Gastrodia longistyla is characterized by long column with one long and needle-shaped appendage at base of the stigma.The plastome of G. longistyla is 30464 bp in size and contains 18 protein-coding genes.Gastrodia longistyla, a new species of Orchidaceae from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to G. peichatieniana, but can be easily distinguished from the latter by having a rhombic epichile, long column (6.0–7.5 mm long), and a needle-shaped appendage (1.8–3.2 mm in length) at the base of the stigma. Identification key and colour photographs are provided. A preliminary risk-of-extinction assessment, according to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria, is given for the new species. The plastome of Gastrodia longistyla is 30464 bp in length with GC content approximately 24.8%, and the plastome does not contain housekeeping genes, such as matK, rpl16, or photosynthesis genes. In addition, the G. longistyla plastome lacks an IR region. This indicates that the plastome is in the last stage of degradation.

Abstract:The genus Ganoderma holds profound importance in traditional medicine and modern scientific research. It is renowned for its medicinal properties and ecological significance, particularly in East Asian cultures, which have been revered for centuries. This mushroom has garnered significant attention in recent decades due to its ethnomedicinal use. The importance of Ganoderma genus in traditional medicine and scientific research cannot be overstated. Furthermore, extensive research has been conducted worldwide on the taxonomy and nomenclature of this fungus, although it remains controversial. However, research into the diversity and characterisation of Ganoderma species in Sri Lanka has been relatively limited, and the species diversity of Ganoderma is still not well known. Hence, we collected and identified Ganoderma species in the Sabaragamuwa and Western Provinces, Sri Lanka, aiming to increase research interest in this important mushroom genus. The collected specimens were identified based on comprehensive morphological analyses and rDNA-ITS sequence-based phylogeny. Three Ganoderma species, Ganoderma angustisporum J.H. Xing, B.K. Cui & Y.C. Dai, G. ellipsoideum Hapuar., T.C. Wen & K.D. Hyde, and G. orbiforme (Fr.) Ryvarden were identified in Sri Lanka for the first time. Additionally, a fungicolous strain of Trichoderma atroviride P. Karst. associated with the basidiocarps of G. angustisporum was identified for the first time

Abstract:Gastrochilus balangshanensis , a new orchid species from the Balang Mountain, Sichuan Province, Southwest China, is described and illustrated. It morphologically resembles G. affinis , but differs in having shorter stems, a reniform epichile and a sub-hemispherical hypochile (spur), obtuse-rounded at the apex. The results of molecular phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ribosome internal transcribed spacer ( nrITS ) and four chloroplast DNA markers ( mat K, psb A– trn H, psb M– trn D and trn L–F) from 50 Gastrochilus species indicate that G. balangshanensis is closely related to G. heminii and G. bernhardtianus , also endemic to the Hengduan Mountains. The novelty is a branch and trunk epiphyte in mixed coniferous forest.

Abstract:A new species of Begonia sect. Platycentrum is described here from the moist deciduous forest of Tirthamukh near Dumboor Lake, Tripura, India. It is similar to B. scintillans, B. chindwinensis and B. thomsonii but differs in plant size, hair characters, petiole length, flowers, stamens and fruits. A description with coloured photographs and information on the phenology and habitat are provided.

Abstract:Gastrochilus pseudodresslerii (Aeridinae), a new species from Maguan County, Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated. Morphological comparisons indicated that this new species is similar to G. dresslerii, but differs by its longer and broadly lanceolate to oblong leaves, larger and elliptic dorsal sepal, longer and elliptic petals, subcupular hypochile, and narrowed toward apex of column. Phylogenetic analysis based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and four plastid sequences (atpI, matK, psbA and trnL-F) indicated that G. pseudodresslerii is also closely related to G. formosanus and G. raraensis, but can be easily distinguished from these two species based on its leaves, epichile and hypochile.

Abstract:The study sample was collected during a field survey done in the year 2019 from Darjeeling hills, India. A detailed morphological description along with field images and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequence analyses suggested that the collected specimen is Gerhardtia foliicola. It is well characterized by its reddish brown and hygrophanous pileus, densely crowded lamellae, irregular ellipsoid basidiospores and its occurrence on leaf litter and humus in broadleaf or coniferous forests.

Abstract:A new species of Goodyera (Orchidaceae) from Tibet, China, G.medogensis, is described and illustrated here. Molecular phylogenetic results based on one nuclear (ITS) and two plastid markers (matK and trnL-F) support the recognition of G.medogensis as a new species in GoodyerasubsectionReticulum. Morphologically, the novelty is most similar to G.biflora, G.vittata and especially to G.hemsleyana, but differs by the thick grid lines of the reticulations with a diffused margin on the adaxial surface of the leaf blades, the inflorescence with more flowers, the obliquely obovate-rhombic petals, the yellow or yellowish labellum without a lamella on the blade, and the shorter trichomes on the floral bracts, sepals and ovary. Finally, a key to the species of Goodyerasubsect.Reticulum in China is also provided.
