Abstract:In this study, we aimed to examine the impacts of COVID-19 vaccines on mental health and relationships between psychological factors and vaccine acceptance in Turkey during the early pandemic period. The study included 1042 adults (70.9% females) with a mean age of 29.55 (SD = 10.29). The results showed that vaccinated participants had lower levels of COVID-19-induced anxiety and depression, and higher levels of life satisfaction compared to those without the vaccine. Furthermore, we found that COVID-19-induced anxiety and protective behaviours towards COVID-19 significantly increased the probability of vaccine acceptance, while depression significantly decreased it. Accordingly, governments should consider the mental health consequences of vaccination, as well as vaccine acceptance and refusal. More attention should be paid to psychological factors associated with attitudes towards the COVID-19 vaccine.

Abstract:Introduction: The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak has resulted in huge psychological distress, especially for people working under risky conditions, such as healthcare workers. We aimed to investigate the psychological challenges of Turkish healthcare workers during the outbreak and discuss the factors that increase their burden, including stigmatization. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey composed of sociodemographic data, questions about perceived stigma, and concerns about working conditions was completed. Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) was also used. Results: 634 participants completed the survey and the prevalence of moderate to severe depression, anxiety, and stress-related symptoms were 36%, 35%, and 22%, respectively. Being female, working with close contact with patients with COVID-19 and having a psychiatric disorder history were risk factors for psychological distress. The healthcare workers with significantly higher depression, anxiety, and stress scores described having less amount of personal protective equipment, lower support from their supervisors, and more unsafe working conditions. Additionally, 7% of the participants stated that they perceived stigmatization by their families and close friends, 14% perceived stigmatization by their neighbours, relatives, and less intimate friends; and 7% perceived stigmatization by unfamiliar people. Healthcare workers who perceived other people as more dismissive had significantly higher depression and anxiety scores. Conclusion: Our study shows that healthcare workers are at risk of developing psychological disturbances during infectious outbreaks. To minimize the psychological impact, additional risk factors such as having a previous psychiatric disorder, working under unsafe conditions, and stigmatization should be taken into account and a more supportive and safer environment should be provided.
The effect of psychological distresses caused by COVID19 in healthcare professionals on happiness

Abstract:Background and objective: COVID-19 has been negatively affecting the world for a long time. This situation can trigger mental problems such as uncertainty, anxiety, stress and depression throughout the society. The aim of our study was to search the effect of the psychological distresses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic on healthcare workers (HCWs) on happiness. Methods: This study was conducted as a descriptive and cross-sectional study in a medical school hospital in Isparta-Turkey and the data for it were collected between January and March 2022. Sociodemographic form, Coronavirus Anxiety Scale (CAS), Covid-19 Related Psychological Distress Scale (CORPD) and Oxford Happiness Questionnaire Short Form (OHQ-SF) were used for the data collection. Results: A total of 326 people, including 62(19%) physicians, 127(39%) nurses, 39(12%) officers and 98(30%) others, participated in the study. Between OHQ-SF and CAS, it was found to be r2=0.008, f=2.76 and p=0.098. Between OHQ-SF and CORPD, it was found to be r2=0.11, f=3.55 and p=0.06. Conclusion: In the HCWs, it was found that CORPD was related with the variables of gender and get vaccinated, CAS was related with the variables of economic status, profession and get COVID-19, and OHQ-SF was related with economic and marital status. It was found that anxiety and psychological distress did not affect the level of happiness. It is recommended to follow up the negative effects of the pandemic, such as anxiety, fear on the future lives, professional functions, and family life of the HCW.
Attitudes of healthcare professionals regarding vaccines and influencing factors: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:Aims: This study aims to examine the attitudes of healthcare professionals toward vaccines and identify factors influencing these attitudes. Methods: The study, which employed a descriptive and cross-sectional methodology, included doctors, nurses, and midwives employed at a public hospital between March 2022 and February 2023. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using structured questionnaires, including the "Attitudes Towards Vaccination Scale." Results: Healthcare workers generally had positive attitudes toward vaccination, with nearly all receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. Participants with children reported high childhood vaccination rates, and factors such as gender and occupation significantly influenced vaccination attitudes (p < 0.001). While 87.1 % of the participants expressed concerns about the potential adverse effects of vaccines, those who believed vaccines had no side effects exhibited more favorable attitudes toward vaccination. Furthermore, the study revealed a considerable degree of endorsement for mandatory childhood vaccinations, with 75.1 % of participants expressing support for implementing legal obligations. Conclusion: The findings of this study show healthcare workers' generally positive attitudes and confidence toward vaccines. However, more research should be conducted on the reasons for hesitancy toward COVID-19 vaccination. Increasing education and information activities is essential to overcome hesitations against new vaccines. Since the attitudes of healthcare workers toward vaccines can affect society's general vaccine acceptance and vaccination rates, studies in this field are of great importance. Implications to practice: The study underscores the crucial role of healthcare professionals as advocates for vaccination, emphasizing the need for tailored communication strategies to effectively address vaccine hesitancy, particularly regarding safety concerns.

Abstract:Purpose of the research is to evaluate the attitudes, hesitancy and confidence of healthcare professionals towards COVID-19 vaccines during the second peak period of the COVID-19 epidemic in Turkey, and to determine the mediating role of vaccine confidence in the effect of their attitudes towards COVID-19 vaccines on hesitancy. A hospital-based cross-sectional research design was used in the study. The population of the research consisted of the health workers of three different training and research hospitals operating in Istanbul. Convenience sampling method was preferred in the study. The data were collected by the researchers themselves using the online survey technique. A total of 440 questionnaires were evaluated. The data were analyzed with SPSS and AMOS package programs. The findings of the study revealed that nearly two-thirds of the participants had a positive attitude towards potential COVID-19 vaccines, partially having higher confidence and less hesitation. In addition, the empirical result of the study revealed that positive attitudes towards potential COVID-19 vaccines reduce vaccine hesitancy. In addition, it has been found that vaccine trust has a significant indirect effect and partially mediates the relationship between attitude towards potential COVID-19 vaccines and hesitancy. This research revealed that positive attitudes towards potential COVID-19 vaccines reduce vaccine hesitations through high vaccine confidence. Thus, increased positive attitudes towards potential COVID-19 vaccines and increased vaccine confidence were significantly associated with decreased vaccine hesitancy.

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has turned into a public health issue since December 2019 and has risen in all countries in the world. The healthcare employees taking part in the pandemic will eventually be affected by the process. The aim of the study is to determine the levels of the anxiety, depression, and stress of the healthcare employees during the COVID-19 pandemic in Turkey. As the data collection tool, an e-survey was used. In the first section, Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale (DASS-21) was used. In the second section of the survey, the problems experienced by the healthcare employees during the pandemic and their working media were aimed to be defined. In the last section, the socio-demographic features of the employees were investigated. 2076 healthcare employees participated in the study. The results showed that the major cause of the anxiety or stress among healthcare employees comes from the fear to contaminate the COVID-19 virus to their families (86.9%). It was observed that the levels of depression, anxiety and stress of female employees are higher than that of male employees (p<0.003). The highest depression, anxiety and stress levels of healthcare employees come from the pandemic, emergency, and internal services (p<0.001). Health managers and policymakers need to make a move immediately to find solutions for the physical and psychological needs of the health employees. On the other hand, in order to minimize the risk, preparation of the work power plans beforehand and inclusion of obligatory referral chain into health services can be suggested.

Abstract:Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the frequencies of depression, anxiety, insomnia, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symtoms among HCWs in Turkey after the COVID-19 vaccinations and to evaluate the associated factors. Method: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted in Turkey between November and December 2021. We used a demographic data form, COVID-19 vaccination status, the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, General Anxiety Disorder-7, the Insomnia Severity Index, and the National Stressful Events Survey post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) Short Scale. Results: A total of 1013 HCWs participated in the study. Women constituted 68.5% of the participants, 65.4% were physicians, 32.5% had histories of COVID-19, and 98.0% had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Abstract:Introduction: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic negatively affected the mental and sexual health of individuals, especially healthcare professionals. In this study, we aimed to investigate the changes in anxiety and sexual activity of male healthcare professionals following vaccination. Methodology: This prospective cross-sectional and descriptive online survey was conducted between July 1, 2021 and November 1, 2021, involving a total of 170 healthcare professionals. Socio-demographic characteristics, pre- and post-vaccination anxiety and sexual activity levels of the participants were compared. Results: There was a significant increase in only the intercourse times of the participants post vaccination ( p = 0.034). The Beck anxiety inventory score decreased from median: 19 (minimum (min): 16, maximum (max): 47) before vaccination to median: 17, (min: 10, max: 43) after vaccination ( p < 0.001). Likewise, Arizona Sexual Experiences Scale (ASEX) scores decreased after vaccination (median: 10, min: 5, max: 20) compared to before vaccination (median: 12, min: 5, max: 18) ( p < 0.001). International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) score also increased after vaccination (25.49 ± 6.50) compared to before vaccination (24.71 ± 7.10) ( p < 0.001). Orgasmic function, sexual desire, intercourse satisfaction and overall satisfaction scores also improved ( p = 0.013, p < 0.001, p = 0.027, p < 0.001). Conclusions: Mental and sexual disorders increased with the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to immunity, the vaccine also had positive effects on anxiety and sexual activity.

Abstract:Introduction and aim When vaccination started in our country after the Covid pandemic started, healthcare workers were determined as the priority group for COVID-19 vaccine by the Ministry of Health. In order to evaluate the vaccination attitudes of intensive care workers, we conducted a survey on physicians and nurses working in covid intensive care units. Methods The questionnaire consisting of 39 questions was sent electronically to the intensive care workers (physicians and nurses) in the hospital. Filling out the questionnaire was on a voluntary basis and the names of those who filled it were not asked. The questions focused on the general opinion about the vaccines and COVID-19 vaccine. Results A total of 127 intensive care workers completed the questionnaire (34.5% response rate). Of the respondents, 26.7% (n: 34) were physicians and 93 were intensive care nurses. Of those surveyed, 33.8% were fully vaccinated and 8 had never been vaccinated. While 50% of the doctors are fully vaccinated (n:17), this rate is 27.9% (n:26) for nurses. While 97.7% of those who said they think my child should have all the vaccines included in the vaccination calendar were fully vaccinated against the covid vaccine, 7.1% of those who did not have the vaccine were against childhood vaccines, and 9.5% were hesitant against these vaccines. Of those who were missing the Covid vaccine, 25% were also missing hepatitis B vaccines. Conclusion 88% of the study population received initial 2 doses of vaccines. However, reluctance to take booster doses was 55%. In the meta-analysis of Abdelmoneim et al., the actual intake of the booster dose was 31%, while the intention to be a booster was 79%. The booster dose rate in our study population was 33%, similar to the meta-analysis. In the vaccination attitude study conducted by Ragazzi et al. in Italy, hesitancy about vaccination was 17% in general. In our study population, vaccination rejection and hesitation were found to be 16.6% in total. In the study of Mongua-Rodriguez et al. vaccine hesitation and fear of side effects were associated with distrust of authority, and there was a similar relationship in our study. Vaccine refusal and vaccine hesitancy is a global health problem that has been increasing in recent years, especially threatening children. Although it is very surprising to see this hesitation and even opposition among the relatively senior health workers working in the intensive care unit, it is necessary to insist on education.

Abstract:Previous research suggests that psychological and behavioural factors such as worry, severity, controllability, and preventive behaviours are associated with mental health and well-being. Less is known about simultaneous effects of those factors in predicting mental health and well-being. This study aimed to present the prevalence of mental health problems and identify the predictors of mental health and subjective well-being of healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants included 245 healthcare workers (Mage = 33.16 ± 7.33; 50.61% females) from a pandemic hospital in Turkey. Healthcare workers reported mild/severe depression, anxiety, and stress. Females tended to be more vulnerable to developing psychiatric symptoms. Worry, severity, and controllability significantly predicted depression, anxiety, stress, and subjective well-being while preventive behaviours only predicted subjective well-being. These findings suggest the importance of assessing healthcare workers' experiences of mental health and subjective well-being and their associated factors to assist mental health providers tailor assessments and treatment during a pandemic.

Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate the extent of fear and risk perception related to COVID-19 and their impact on the psychological well-being of healthcare workers. Data were gathered through an online survey, incorporating questions about risk perception utilizing the health belief model, the Fear of COVID-19 Scale, and the General Health Questionnaire-12. A total of 364 HCWs participated in the survey, with 94% of participants identified as being in the high-risk category for mental disorders based on their General Health Questionnaire scores. The assessment of COVID-19-related risk perception within the Health Belief Model demonstrated significant correlations between perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived barriers, and self-efficacy with both the fear scale and General Health Questionnaire scores. Linear regression was employed to identify factors influencing General Health Questionnaire scores, revealing that risk perception, Fear of COVID-19 scores, marital status, and perceived health were significantly associated with General Health Questionnaire scores. These findings underscore the importance of monitoring the psychological well-being of healthcare workers throughout all stages of pandemic preparedness and response.

Abstract:In this study, we aimed to investigate psychological well-being, depression, and stress among healthcare professionals and non-healthcare professionals in Turkey. An online questionnaire was prepared and shared with participants using social networking sites. Participants were 546 healthcare professionals (females = 313) and 445 non-healthcare professionals (females = 333), aged between 20 and 67 years. All participants completed measures of Depression Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 and Psychological Well-Being Scale. The results showed no significant difference in the scores of psychological well-being, depression and stress of healthcare professionals and non-healthcare professionals. However, the psychological well-being of healthcare professionals and stress varied in terms of age, gender, marital status, job descriptions, and ways of working in clinic. Women, non-physician healthcare professionals, young and single people and those who worked in COVID-19 service and stayed at least one week away from their families during the pandemic were found to have poor mental well-being. Psychological well-being was significantly and negatively correlated with depression and anxiety. Our findings indicate that healthcare professionals who are at the frontline of the fight against the COVID-19, and nurses, women, single person and those who are away from their family for more than a week during the pandemic are at greater risk.

Abstract:Abstract Objective: Health-care workers (HCWs) are often seen as the most reliable source of vaccine-related information for their patients; nevertheless, various studies show that HCWs experience vaccine hesitation. In this study, the aim was to determine the reasons for vaccine hesitation among HCWs working in a large public hospital and its affiliated units in Istanbul. Methods: A descriptive method for collecting qualitative data was designed for this study. The data of the HCWs were analyzed in line with the vaccine hesitancy factors put forward by the World Health Organization (WHO). Results: The most important vaccine hesitancy theme that emerged was the fear and lack of confidence in the vaccines, which was expressed at a higher rate than any other theme in all HCWs. The most cited reason for fear/lack of confidence in the vaccine was the fear of its side effects. It was observed that the HCWs who reported hesitation about vaccination due to pregnancy and breastfeeding consisted of women. The second most common theme for vaccine hesitation was reported as an inconvenience in accessing the vaccines . Although HCWs have priority, they stated that their reason for vaccine hesitancy was due to heavy personal issues or workloads. The final theme was about complacency , or thinking they do not need the vaccine. Conclusions: Vaccine hesitation is a challenge that can be overcome with detailed monitoring and policy-making. Although the vaccine seems to be more significant, we do not want to see vaccine hesitancy grow more than the vaccine itself.

Abstract:Aim and Objectives This study aimed to determine the psychological effects of the COVID‐19 pandemic on healthcare professionals working in primary care settings in the first year of the pandemic. Background The healthcare industry has faced an unprecedented burden in the COVID‐19 pandemic. Primary care professionals experienced the high level of psychological problems. Design and Methods A total of 793 healthcare professionals from different regions of Turkey participated in this cross‐sectional study. The STROBE (Strengthening the reporting of observational studies in epidemiology) checklist was used in the study. Data were collected online. Results It has been found that more than half of healthcare professionals experienced severe depression, three‐quarters experienced anxiety, and almost half experienced stress. It was also found that about half of the participants experienced a high degree of acute and chronic fatigue, and one‐fifth experienced low inter‐shift recovery. Conclusion The effects of the COVID‐19 pandemic on the mental health of primary care professionals, especially nurses and midwives, are alarming. The problems that arise from the flawed healthcare delivery models and gender inequality, which worsen the usual psychological effects of the pandemic on primary care professionals, should be addressed urgently. Relevance to Clinical Practice Psychological support and rehabilitative services should be expanded to eliminate the short‐ and long‐term psychological effects of the pandemic on healthcare professionals.

An examınatıon of the anxıety states of Turkısh health care workers durıng the COVID-19 pandemıc: a cross-sectıonal study

Abstract:Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the anxiety experienced by health care workers in different branches during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: The cross-sectional study included 373 health care workers. Data were collected using an online questionnaire consisting of the Sociodemographic Form (32 items related to the working conditions of health care professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic) and the Penn State Concern Questionnaire. Results: The anxiety levels of the female workers were significantly higher (p<0.001). The total Penn State Concern Questionnaire points were determined to be statistically significantly higher in those who need to protect the family during the pandemic (p=0.03), who were dissatisfied with their profession (p<0.001), and those whose workload had increased during the pandemic (p=0.007). Conclusions: The study results demonstrated that the levels of anxiety of health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic could be increased by young age, low level of experience, female gender, increased workload, and dissatisfaction with the profession.

In this study, we aimed to evaluate the anxiety, depression and burnout levels of Turkish HCWs after the first period of the pandemic.METHODS: The participants filled sociodemographic data form, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI).RESULTS: In this study, 221 HCWs (68.8% female) with a median age of 28 (20-66) years were included. Concerning HADS cut-off points, 39.8% of the participants scored above the depression cut-off point, while 26.2% scored above the cut-off point for anxiety. The anxiety (HADS-A) and depression (HADS-D) scores of nurses and medical secretaries were significantly higher than the physicians. Also, the anxiety and depression rates of nurses were higher than both physicians and medical secretaries. Emotional exhaustion (MBI-EE) and depersonalization (MBI-D) scores were highest in nurses, followed by medical secretaries and physicians, respectively. In multivariate analysis, being a nurse (OR: 4.671, p = 0.044) or medical secretary (OR: 4.013, p = 0.048), requirement of using a mental health support line (OR: 4.641, p = 0.005), having any kind of addiction (OR: 2.562, p = 0.019) and being under antidepressant therapy (OR: 3.096, p = 0.036) significantly increased the risk of anxiety. However, in multivariate analyses, the only requirement of using a mental health support line significantly increased the risk of depression (OR: 8.542, p = 0.001).CONCLUSION: Female HCWs, nurses and medical secretaries experienced higher levels of mental health symptoms than male HCWs and physicians.

Abstract:Background: The pandemic has proven to be a particular challenge for healthcare workers, not only in the professional but also individual sense. The COVID-19 pandemic negatively influenced their well-being and caused psychological distress. Undoubtedly, direct contact with sick patients, the fight against the pandemic, and observing the epidemiological situation influenced the attitudes of this group towards COVID-19 and vaccinations. The aim of the study was to analyse the level of anxiety among healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic and to assess attitudes towards vaccinations against COVID-19. Methods: The cross-sectional study followed the recommendations of STROBE (Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology). A convenience purposive sampling method was used and the study was led among nurses and doctors employed in healthcare facilities. The study used a survey and the Trait Anxiety Scale SL-C. Results: The study included 385 participants, with an average age of 48.41 ± 6.76 years. The nurses constituted 55% of the study group and the doctors 45%. A total of 70% of healthcare workers had over 10 years of work experience. Over half of the subjects (57%) became infected with COVID-19. A total of 85% of respondents have received vaccination. A total of 71% of respondents believe vaccinations are harmless. Frequently, the participants assessed their level of anxiety as moderate. Conclusions: Almost all surveyed doctors chose to be vaccinated, while the percentage of vaccinated nurses was significantly lower. As a result, it is possible to conclude that the employment position has a significant influence on the decision to get vaccinated against COVID-19. In self-assessment during the COVID-19 pandemic, most healthcare professionals experienced a moderate level of anxiety. Receiving the COVID-19 vaccination reduced the level of anxiety.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of depression, anxiety, distress, and insomnia and related factors in healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic in Turkey. We applied the study survey online to HCWs during the pandemic in Turkey between 23 April and 23 May 2020. We used the sociodemographic data form, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, General Anxiety Disorder-7, Insomnia Severity Index, and Impact of Event Scale-Revised. Six hundred twenty (66.0%) of the 939 HCWs taking part in the study were female, 580 (61.8%) were physicians, 569 (60.6%) were working on the front line. Seven hundred twenty-nine (77.6%) participants exhibited depression, 565 (60.2%) anxiety, 473 (50.4%) insomnia, and 717 (76.4%) distress symptoms. Depression, anxiety, insomnia, and distress symptoms were significantly greater among females, individuals with a history of psychiatric illness, and individuals receiving psychiatric support during the COVID-19 pandemic. HCWs serving in Turkey during the COVID-19 pandemic experienced high levels of depression, anxiety, insomnia, and distress symptoms. Female gender, being a nurse, working on the front line, history of psychiatric illness, and being tested for COVID-19 were identified as risk factors for mental health problems.
