Abstract:Abstract Methanol poisoning causes blindness, organ failure or even death when recognized too late. Currently, there is no methanol detector for quick diagnosis by breath analysis or for screening of laced beverages. Typically, chemical sensors cannot distinguish methanol from the much higher ethanol background. Here, we present an inexpensive and handheld sensor for highly selective methanol detection. It consists of a separation column (Tenax) separating methanol from interferants like ethanol, acetone or hydrogen, as in gas chromatography, and a chemoresistive gas sensor (Pd-doped SnO 2 nanoparticles) to quantify the methanol concentration. This way, methanol is measured within 2 min from 1 to 1000 ppm without interference of much higher ethanol levels (up to 62,000 ppm). As a proof-of-concept, we reliably measure methanol concentrations in spiked breath samples and liquor. This could enable the realization of highly selective sensors in emerging applications such as breath analysis or air quality monitoring.

Abstract:A suitable and non-invasive methanol sensor workable in ambient temperature conditions with a high response has gained wide interest to prevent detrimental consequences for industrial workers from its low-level intoxication. In this work, we present a tunable and highly responsive ppb-level methanol gas sensor device working at room temperature via a bottom-up synthetic approach using exfoliated graphene sheet (EGs) and ZnO quantum dots (QDs) on an aluminum anodic oxide (AAO) template. It is verified that EGs-supported AAO with a vertical electrode configuration enabled high and fast-responsive methanol sensing. Moreover, the hydroxyl and carboxyl groups of the high surface area EGs and ZnO QDs with a 3.37 eV bandgap efficiently absorbing UV light led to 56 times high response due to the enhanced polarization on the sensor surface compared to non-UV-radiated EGs/AAO at 800 ppb of methanol. The optimal resonance frequency of methanol is determined to be 100 kHz, which could detect methanol with high response of 2.65% at 100 ppm. The limit of detection (LOD) concentration is obtained at 2 ppb level. This study demonstrates the potential of UV-assisted ZnO, EGs, and AAO-based capacitance sensor material for rapidly detecting hazardous gaseous light organic molecules at ambient conditions, and the overall approach can be easily expanded to a novel non-invasive monitoring strategy for light and hazardous volatile organic exposures.

Abstract:An electrochemical gas sensor has been fabricated using molecularly imprinted polymer nanoparticles (nanoMIPs) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes on screen-printed electrodes. Methanol vapour was chosen as the target due to its toxicity as its suitability as a model for more harmful pollutant gases. The sensor functions under ambient conditions and in the required concentration range, in contrast to all previous MIP-based gas sensors for methanol. The sensitivity of the sensor was greatly improved by the addition of multiwall carbon nanotubes, resulting in a limit of detection of approximately 10 ppm. The nanoMIPs provide an inherent selectivity for the target inherent in its design. Selectivity studies were performed with structurally analogous alcohols at various concentrations, demonstrating selectivity for methanol 12.1 times that for ethanol at 2 mmol dm -3 and 4.2 times that for ethanol at 1 mmol dm -3 . Interactions with isopropanol and n-propanol were found to be non-specific, and the response to water was negligible. This demonstrates an improvement over previous methanol gas sensors based on molecularly imprinted polymers. No response was observed with carbon nanotubes alone, and no selectivity was observed with non-imprinted equivalents of the nanoMIP sensor. The resulting device is by far the most practical MIP-based instrument for methanol gas sensing thus far described in the literature, being the only example capable of functioning at the necessary methanol vapour concentrations and at the required temperature and humidity. With the selectivity and sensitivity described and the simple design, the developed device provides a substantial advance in the field of molecularly imprinted gas sensors.

Abstract:Room temperature detection of toxic gases with ppb level concentration experiences profound fabrication challenges. This work introduces CO gas sensor based on the unique La-ZnO/MWCNTs composite film developed on a flexible polyimide substrate, where interdigitated electrodes (IDEs) (thickness: 300 μm and spacing: 300 μm) were prepared using a laser induced carbonization technique. The synthesized composites were characterized using SEM, EDS, XRD, FTIR, and UV-Vis techniques. When compared to the La-ZnO composite, the addition of MWCNTs on the synthesized composite-based sensor exhibited ~9.65 times higher response than La-ZnO towards 100 ppm CO at 27°C. The response of the La-ZnO/MWCNTs composite sensors to 20 ppm CO was also tested at six different relative humidity (RH) levels ranging from 0% to 90% in increments of 20% RH. These sensors had a humidity tolerant properties, as evidenced by their responses to different humidity levels. Even when exposed to 90% RH, the sensor only showed a 13.081% reduction in response compared to 0% RH, indicating that it is a humidity tolerant sensor. Furthermore, the La-ZnO/MWCNTs sensor had excellent selectivity and could detect low CO concentrations of 100 ppb. As a result, the reported high-performance flexible sensor has a lot of potential and can be envisioned for the use in wearable devices to detect trace level CO gas at room temperature.

Abstract:Engineering of highly performing nanomaterials, capable of rapid detection of trace concentrations of gas molecules at room temperature, is key to the development of the next generation of miniaturized chemical sensors. Here, a highly performing nanoheterojunctions layout is presented for the rapid room‐temperature chemical sensing of volatile organic compounds down to ten particles per billion concentrations. The layout consists of a 3D network of nickel oxide–zinc oxide (NiO–ZnO) p–n semiconductors with grain size of ≈20 nm nanometers and a porosity of ≈98%. Notably, it is observed that the formation of the p–n heterojunctions by decoration of a ZnO nanoparticle networks with NiO increases the sensor response by more than four times while improving the lower limit of detection. Under solar light irradiation, the optimal NiO–ZnO nanoheterojunction networks demonstrate a strong and selective room‐temperature response to two important volatile organic compounds utilized for breath analysis, namely acetone and ethanol. Furthermore, these NiO–ZnO nanoheterojunctions show an inverse response to acetone from that observed for all others reducing gas molecules (i.e., ethanol, propane, and ethylbenzene). It is believed that these novel insights of the optoelectrochemical properties of ultraporous nanoheterojunction networks provide guidelines for the future design of low‐power solid‐state chemical sensors.
Room temperature sensing of volatile organic compounds using hybrid SnO nanoflower and Laser-Induced Graphitic carbon devices

Abstract:Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are a common risk to human health in industrial and domestic settings. VOCs are often present at concentrations that cannot be detected through human odor perception. VOC sensors are, therefore, urgently needed for home and workplace environmental monitoring, including wearable sensors for workers. However, current chemiresistive VOC sensors typically require high-energy fabrication processes with large environmental footprints, significant mass-loadings of critical raw materials and/or elevated operating temperatures, which hamper widespread, sustainable deployment. We demonstrate a simple, low-energy hybrid fabrication route for chemiresistive VOC sensors, comprising additively-produced laser-induced graphene (LIG) electrodes on plastic substrates, decorated with SnO nanoflowers. The SnO nanoflowers were synthesized below 100C at ambient pressure and offer a low-energy alternative to conventional SnO2 or other metal-oxide nanoparticle devices. These chemiresistive sensors can detect methanol vapor at room temperature (∼18C) and typical humidity levels (∼55% RH), with a limit of detection (170±40 ppm) below 8-hour worker safety exposure levels (200 ppm). The sensors also demonstrated stable DC resistance responses DeltaR/R = 9±2% to 710 ppm of methanol for over 21 days in ambient laboratory conditions. First principles density functional theory simulations are used to elucidate the origin of the performance of the LIG-SnO sensors. LIG-SnO hybrid sensors thus present a resource-efficient route to develop chemiresistive sensors for low-power applications, such as wearable worker safety or Internet of Things edge-sensing.

Abstract:To ensure worker and environmental safety in daily work, it is an urgent need in industrial safety field to construct wearable sensing devices for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) leakage detection in chemical pro-duction. In this work, methanol gas was selected as the research object, and the wearable gas sensor has been constructed on a flexible substrate for systematically investigating the sensing process and performance, as well as practicality of leak detection. Electrochemical measurements demonstrated the constructed sensor possessed obvious electrocatalytic capability at 0.6 V, good linearity in the detection range of 20-100 ppm, 200-3000 ppm and 4000-30,000 ppm, and low limit of detection (3.3 ppm). This methanol gas sensor also exhibited high reproducibility, lifetime, and stable sensitivity according to the continuous repeated and long-time stability measurement results. High gas-sensitive selectivity to methanol under multiple interference gases, such as acetone, toluene, xylene, methylene chloride, acetonitrile had been demonstrated, and the response change under selectivity test was less than 16%. Significantly, it also displayed detectability in actual methanol gasoline sample, and the response time was less than 16 s. Moreover, experimental results also have proved higher content of platinum (20%) with better theoretical CO-tolerance capacity and sensing sensitivity. When main-taining a platinum content of 20%, the introduction of support materials with high specific surface area and conductivity in place of activated carbon will ensure that all sites are catalytically active, further improve the sensing sensitivity and be extended to the design of other VOCs sensors.

Abstract:We successfully synthesized zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles using the sol-gel method, followed by their application onto alumina substrates for sensor testing. Comprehensive characterization of the nanomaterials was carried out utilizing XRD, SEM, TEM, UV–VIS-IR, and PL techniques. The nanoparticles displayed a hexagonal wurtzite crystal structure, typical of ZnO. UV–Vis–IR spectroscopy revealed significant absorption in the UV region, with the band gap energy calculated to be 3.22 eV. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra indicated the presence of various defects, such as oxygen vacancies and zinc interstitials, within the ZnO structure. SEM analysis of the deposited film surface showed spherical agglomerates, confirming the nanoscale dimensions, while EDX spectra affirmed the high purity of the ZnO films, rich in Zn and O elements. Sensor tests demonstrated the ZnO sensor's high sensitivity to low concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as ethanol, formaldehyde, methanol, and acetone. Notably, at an operational temperature of 300°C, the sensor exhibited a remarkable response to 5 ppm of each gas, with the following response and response/recovery times: for methanol, 11.47 and 36 s/57 s; for acetone, 11.54 and 25 s/52 s; for formaldehyde, 0.79 and 53 s/58 s; and for ethanol, 3.88 and 9 s/59 s.

Abstract:The exploration of novel sensing materials for selective identification of methane (CH4) is critical for practical applications, particularly in the presence of ethanol (C2H5OH) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), which are general interfering gases for the monitoring of CH4 in industrial and domestic scenarios. This work proposed a novel core-shell ZnO/Pd@ZIF-8/Pt nanomaterial to achieve CH4 selective sensing. At 230 degrees C, the CH4 selectivity against C2H5OH and NO2 of the ZnO/Pd@ZIF-8/Pt sensor is improved by 13.2 times and 76.5 times, respectively. Catalytic experiments revealed that Pt has a high selective catalytic activity to C2H5OH than CH4, indicating its catalytic filtering effect. Besides, the sieving effect of ZIF-8 can further hinder the interfering gas owing to its aperture size of 4.0-4.2 A, where NO2 (4.5 A) was retarded while CH4 (3.8 A) can pass. Thus, these two effects synergistically contribute to the improved CH4 selectivity. The ZnO/Pd@ZIF-8/Pt also showed a response of 304.6% to 5000 ppm CH4 at 230 degrees C with a response/recovery time of 4.0 s / 1.5 s, as well as full reversibility and long-term stability, which is potential in practical CH4 detection. Furthermore, the combination of the gasselective catalytic activity of noble metals with the MOF filter can be easily extended to other types of SMOs@MOF sensors, opening a new avenue for the preparation of highly selective sensor devices.

Abstract:Zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67), carbon nanoparticles (CNPs), and the CNPs@ZIF-67 composite were prepared and used to fabricate sensors for the detection of acetone vapour. The prepared materials were characterized using transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The sensors were tested using an LCR meter under the resistance parameter. It was found that the ZIF-67 sensor did not respond at room temperature, the CNP sensor had a non-linear response to all analytes, and the CNPs/ZIF-67 sensor had an excellent linear response to acetone vapour and was less sensitive to 3-pentanone, 4-methyl-1-hexene, toluene and cyclohexane vapours. However, it was found that ZIF-67 improves carbon soot sensor sensitivity by 155 times, wherein the sensitivity of the carbon soot sensor and carbon soot@ZIF-67 sensor on acetone vapour was found to be 0.0004 and 0.062 respectively. In addition, the sensor was found to be insensitive to humidity and the limit of detection was 484 ppb at room temperature.

Abstract:Nanocomposite sensors were prepared using carbon soot (CNPs), nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO-NPs), and cellulose acetate (CA), which was used to detect and study the sensing mechanism of mesitylene vapour at room temperature. Synthesised materials were characterised using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD), Raman spectroscopy, and nitrogen sorption at 77 K. Various sensors were prepared using individual nanomaterials (NiO-NPs, CNPs, and CA), binary combinations of the nanomaterials (CNPs-NiO, CNPs-CA, and NiO-CA), and ternary composites (NiO-CNPs-CA). Among all of the prepared and tested sensors, the ternary nanocomposites (NiO-CNPs-CA) were found to be the most sensitive for the detection of mesitylene, with acceptable response recovery times. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy coupled with an LCR meter revealed that the mesitylene decomposes into carbon dioxide.

Ultrasensitive Room-Temperature Chemical Sensors By Ag-Decorated Ultraporous Zno Nanoparticle Networks

Abstract:Highly sensitive room temperature gas sensors consisting of ultraporous ZnO nanoparticle networks decorated with Ag nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated by nanoparticle aerosol self-assembly and sequential sputtering. Optimization of the AgNPs loading and the thickness of ultraporous ZnO networks lead to a sensor response, defined as the ratio of resistance change, of 1.8 and 7.4 at 0.1 and 1 ppm ethanol concentrations, respectively, at room temperature under light irradiation. This is similar to 10 times higher than that of pure ultraporous ZnO film under the same experimental conditions. Furthermore, the optimal AgNPs-decorated ultraporous ZnO films can detect as low as 5 ppb of ethanol gas at room temperature under light illumination. The high sensitivity of AgNPs-decorated ZnO film can be ascribed to the synergistic effects of the ultraporous nanoparticle network morphology, AgNPs sensitization and light-assisted photo-excited gas-sensing process. These provide directions for the design of high sensitive metal-oxide semiconductor-based gas sensors capable to operate at room temperature.

Abstract:Methanol has become a very important part of many industries, ranging from chemical production and pharmaceuticals to automotive and electronics manufacturing as a result of which methanol usage has spiked in recent years. But this exponential increase asks for precise detection methods as methanol has not only detrimental effects on environment but it is very dangerous to human health even if consumed in a minute amount .This paper will explore the unique physical and chemical properties of methanol which can be exploited to make it a target for different mechanisms such as H-Bonding, induced self-assembly, Internal Charge Transfer (ICT), Aggregation-induced emission (AIE), conformational flexibility, keto-enol tautomerization, adsorption etc. by various small molecule and nano-particles. Informative studies on small molecules involves functionalized pentacenequinone derivatives, luminogens, ligands and fluorescent probes which can be used to detect methanol by change in color or intensity which can be easily detected in real time and is portable. On the other hand, nanoparticle-based probes reveal the use of materials like chitosan/zinc, sulfide composites, Quantum Dots (QDs) hybrids, graphene polyoxides, Ag-LaFeO3 etc. which provides with selective and sensitive methanol optical and conductometric sensing. This paper acknowledges the contributions of various studies and researchers who contributed to advancing the field of methanol sensing, providing a foundation for future developments.
Silica Nanochannel-Based Interferometric Sensor for Selective Detection of Polar and Aromatic Volatile Organic Compounds.

Abstract:Public awareness of the toxicity of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) has led to increased requirements for direct measurement of these substances. This work reports the sensitive detection of VOCs at the ppb level by an interferometric sensor based on the multilayer silica-nanochannel membrane (MSNM). The MSNM is fabricated by layer-by-layer stacking of a free-standing ultrathin SNM composed of regularly ordered channels with an ultrasmall diameter of about 2.3 nm and an ultrahigh density of about 4 x 10(12) cm(-2). Light reflected from parallel interfaces of the MSNM gives rise to the interferometric pattern with constructive and destructive fringes. The adsorption of VOCs to a highly porous MSNM varies the refractive index of the MSNM, resulting in the shift of the reflectometric interference spectrum (RIS) and thus yielding highly sensitive responses with a limit of detection (LOD) at the ppb level. Moreover, the sensor selectively responds to polar ethanol and acetone, as well as aromatic benzene, toluene, and chlorobenzene, but is insensitive to nonpolar ethane or hexane. The selectivity most likely arises from hydrogen bonding and dipole interaction of VOCs with silica surface.
ZnO/Pd@ZIF-7-Based Gas Sensors for Selective Methane Sensing

Abstract:Selective methane detection is essential for process safety in industries such as coal mining, where CO, NH3, and NO2 serve as interfering gases. A promising approach is to use metal oxide semiconductor (MOS)-based sensors, which are low-cost, highly sensitive, and easy to fabricate. However, the poor selectivity of MOS sensors due to nonselective surface reactions remains a significant challenge. In this study, we fabricated a ZnO/Pd@ZIF-7 core-shell structure-based gas sensor using a self-sacrificial method. The ZnO/Pd layer served as the sensitive layer to generate sensing signals, while the ZIF-7 shell acted as a filter. By manipulating gas diffusion, ZIF-7 significantly improved CH4 sensing selectivity against CO, NH3, and NO2. For NO2, which strongly interacts with ZIF-7, the diffusion through ZIF-7 was significantly hindered, resulting in a decreased response across all temperature ranges (110-250 degrees C). For CH4, CO, and NH3, which weakly interact with ZIF-7, the influence of ZIF-7 depended on temperature, as competition occurred between surface reactions and diffusion through ZIF-7. At low temperatures, ZIF-7 enriched gases and promoted the response of the three gases. At elevated temperatures, ZIF-7 separated gases according to their molecular polarity, where the diffusion of polar CO and NH3 was more hindered than nonpolar CH4. The excellent CH4 selectivity against CO, NH3, and NO2 was achieved at 210 degrees C, with fast response/recovery, good repeatability, and long-term stability. Our study not only provides a possible solution to enable sensing selectivity of MOS to CH4, but the insights into the effect of the ZIF-7 filter may also inspire the development of highly selective gas sensors.
Mg-doped InSnO nanofiber field-effect transistor for methanol gas detection at room temperature

Abstract:Abstract Research on high-performance gas sensors for detecting toxic and harmful methanol gas is still a very important issue. For gas sensors, it is very important to be able to achieve low concentration detection at room temperature. In this work, we used the electrospinning method to prepare Mg-doped InSnO nanofiber field-effect transistors (FETs) methanol gas sensor. When the Mg element doping concentration is 2.3 mol.%, InSnO nanofiber FET exhibits excellent electrical properties, including higher mobility of 3.17 cm 2 V −1 s −1 , threshold voltage of 1.51 V, subthreshold swing of 0.42 V/decade, the excellent on/off current ratio is about 10 8 and the positive bias stress stability of the InSnO nanofiber FET through Mg doping has been greatly improved. In addition, the InSnMgO nanofiber FET gas sensor exhibits acceptable gas selectivity and sensitivity to methanol gas at room temperature. In the methanol gas sensor test at room temperature, when the methanol gas concentration is 60 ppm at room temperature, the response value of the InSnMgO nanofiber FET gas sensor is 81.92; and when the methanol concentration is 5 ppm, the response value is still 1.21. This work provides an effective and novel way to build a gas sensor at room temperature and use it to detect methanol gas at room temperature.

Abstract:Semiconducting metal oxide (SMO) gas sensors have emerged as invaluable technology due to their high sensitivity and ease of fabrication. However, they have limited selectivity and require relatively high operational temperatures. Here, we present a monolithic membrane-chemoresistive sensor consisting of a hierarchical metal oxide (MO) and a metal-organic frameworks (MOF) layer. Both layers were made by sequential aerosol deposition of SnO 2 and ZnO nanoparticles, with the latter being thereafter converted to zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) by chemical vapour conversion. The SnO 2 fractal network provides high surface area for chemical sensing, while the multi-scale porous ZIF-8 membrane offers a controlled gateway for gas molecule diffusion. Notably, our hierarchical dual-layer architecture can tune the analyte sensor response time, allowing discrimination of a variety of gases, including NO 2 , ethanol, acetone, methanol, propane, and ethyl benzene. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations were implemented to gain further insights into the selectivity mechanism revealing the key role of surface adsorption sites. This approach enables us to develop unique response profiles, fingerprinting the presence of specific gas molecules, with application ranging from industrial safety to environmental monitoring and medical diagnostics.

Abstract:Sensitive detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is significant for environmental monitoring and medical applications. In this work, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) that have good adsorption for VOCs, were sprayed layer by layer on an interdigitated electrode (IDE) to build a sensitive VOCs gas sensor. The relative resistance change (△R/R) when the sensor was exposed to VOCs was measured. The sensor showed high sensitivity to acetone, ethanol, isopropanol and isoprene with fast response (110 ± 5 s) and recovery (152 ± 5 s) at room temperature, and the lower detection limit (LDL) of the sensor reached 9 ppm. With the micro-fabricated IDE structure, the sensor can be easily built into an electric nose for VOC recognition and measurement.

Abstract:Sensors with high-sensitivity for resistive methanol gas detection are highly desirable. Herein, we report the newly designed ultrathin anionic metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets (NSs), with an average thickness of 10 nm and an electrical conductivity of 3.77 × 10-4 S·cm-1. The ultrathin MOF NSs can be used as the active material in an electronic methanol gas sensor, which exhibits high sensitivity toward methanol gas at room temperature, i.e., high Rair/Rgas (363.2 at 100 ppm), fast gas response/recovery speed (6 s / 2 s at 20 ppm), long-term stability, and superior cross-selectivity against other interfering gases.
