Abstract:Human gait is unstable in nature and it require precise control by hierarchical neuronal network in central nervous system. In this system, the cerebral cortex is assumed to play important role in human gait and postural control. Previous studies revealed that the concurrent cognitive task interferes postural control. It is also emphasized that attentional allocation ability affect the result of postural-cognitive dual task paradigm. These findings suggested the existence of common processing pipeline between cognitive task and postural control. Importance of cerebral cortex in gait and postural control also assumed by the fact that gait disturbance is major sequelae after stroke and other central nervosa system injury. Previous studies reported compensative facilitation of the cerebral cortex especially in the medial part of the premotor area, and it suggested this area is a candidate for neuromodulative intervention. We are working with near-infrared spectroscopy mediated neurofeedback system for facilitating gait recovery after central nervosa system damage. More precise understanding between cognitive and postural control mechanism may enable us to use appropriate therapeutic strategy for patients with gait and postural impairment.
