Abstract:The shift towards sustainable energy requires efficient electrochemical conversion technologies, emphasizing the crucial need for robust electrocatalyst design. Recent findings reveal that the efficiency of some electrocatalytic reactions is spin-dependent, with spin configuration dictating performance. Consequently, understanding the spin's role and controlling it in electrocatalysts is important. This review succinctly outlines recent investigations into spin-dependent electrocatalysis, stressing its importance in energy conversion. It begins with an introduction to spin-related features, discusses characterization techniques for identifying spin configurations, and explores strategies for fine-tuning them. At the end, the article provides insights into future research directions, aiming to reveal more unknown fundamentals of spin-dependent electrocatalysis and encourage further exploration in spin-related research and applications.

Abstract:A sustainable future demands a successful transition from a carbon energy‐dependent economy towards renewable energy schemes, many of which ultimately rely on the development of efficient electrocatalysis that either converts chemical energy into electricity or uses electrons to produce chemical energy. In general, electrocatalysis studies focus on the interactions (e. g., electron transfer) between the catalyst surface and the reaction intermediates. However, the role of electron spin, as an intrinsic property of electrons, has commonly been overlooked. Recently, controlling the electron spin polarization at the catalyst's surface demonstrated the great potential of boosting both reaction activity and product selectivity. Molecule‐induced electron spin polarization inspired by the chiral‐induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect has started to have a remarkable impact in electrocatalysis. In this compact review, we summarize the latest studies that use molecule‐induced electron spin polarization to enhance catalytic performance. We focus on the reactions essential to the so‐called hydrogen economy, and discuss the feasibility and limitations of this effect. Finally, we share our perspective regarding the more impactful future applications.

Abstract:Building highly reactive electrocatalysts is of great significance for addressing the energy crisis and developing green energy. Electrocatalytic reactions occur at the interface of catalysts, where the physicochemical properties of the catalyst surface play a dominant role. In particular, the electron spin behavior on the catalyst surface has a decisive impact on the catalytic reaction process. This review initially introduces the definition of electron spin and methods for spin manipulation. Furthermore, we summarize the advanced characterization methods of electron spin. Then, we review the latest research advancements on the spin effect in the oxygen reduction reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, carbon dioxide reduction reaction, and nitrogen reduction reaction. The catalytic mechanisms of spin manipulation in these four reactions are thoroughly discussed. Finally, we propose key directions for the future development of spin effects in the field of electrocatalysis. This review contributes to a deeper understanding of the micromechanisms in electrocatalytic reactions.

Abstract:Understanding the electronic structure of active sites is crucial in efficient catalyst design. The spin state, spin configurations of d-electrons, has been frequently discussed recently. However, its systematic depiction in electrocatalysis is lacking. In this tutorial review, a comprehensive interpretation of the spin state of metal centers in electrocatalysts and its role in electrocatalysis is provided. This review starts with the basics of spin states, including molecular field theory, crystal field theory, and ligand field theory. It further introduces the differences in low spin, intermediate spin, and high spin, and intrinsic factors affecting the spin state. Popular characterization techniques and modeling approaches that can reveal the spin state, such as X-ray absorption microscopy, electron spin resonance spectroscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, are introduced as well with examples from the literature. The examples include the most recent progress in tuning the spin state of metal centers for various reactions, e.g., the oxygen evolution reaction, oxygen reduction reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, carbon dioxide reduction reaction, nitrogen reduction reaction, nitrate reduction reaction, and urea oxidation reaction. Challenges and potential implications for future research related to the spin state are discussed at the end.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reduction (OER) are regarded as the key reactions via the sustainable system (fuel cell and water splitting), respectively. In both crucial progresses, the transition from singlet oxygen species to triplet oxygen molecules is involved. However, in this process, the number of unpaired electrons is not conserved, which is not thermodynamically favorable and creates an additional energy barrier. Fortunately, regulating the electrocatalysis by spin-state modulation enables a unique effect on the catalytic performance, but the current understanding on spin-state engineering for electro-catalyzing ORR and OER is still insufficient. Herein, this review summarized the in-spin engineering for the state-of-the-art ORR and OER electrocatalysts. It began by introducing engineering of spin-state to eg filling for ORR and OER process, and then moved to spin polarization and spin-pinning effect for OER process. Various designed strategies focusing on how to regulate the spin-state of the active center have been summarized up. The connectivity of the structures of typical ORR (e.g. metal-nitrogen-carbon) and OER (e.g. design strategies oxides, metal organic frameworks (MOFs)) catalysts depending on the spin level is also discussed. Finally, we present the outlook from the aspects of template catalysts, characterization methods, regulation strategies, theoretical calculations, which will further expand the possibility of better electrocatalytic performance through spin-state modulation. This review concluded some open suggestions and prospects, which are worthy of the community's future work.

Abstract:The demand for efficient and environmentally-benign electrocatalysts that help availably harness the renewable energy resources is growing rapidly. In recent years, increasing insights into the design of water electrolysers, fuel cells, and metal–air batteries emerge in response to the need for developing sustainable energy carriers, in which the oxygen evolution reaction and the oxygen reduction reaction play key roles. However, both reactions suffer from sluggish kinetics that restricts the reactivity. Therefore, it is vital to probe into the structure of the catalysts to exploit high-performance bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts. Spinel-type catalysts are a class of materials with advantages of versatility, low toxicity, low expense, high abundance, flexible ion arrangement, and multivalence structure. In this review, we afford a basic overview of spinel-type materials and then introduce the relevant theoretical principles, following that we shed light on the structure–property relationship strategies for spinel-type catalysts including electronic structure, microstructure, phase and composition regulation, and coupling with electrically conductive supports. We elaborate the relationship between structure and property, in order to provide some insights into the design of spinel-type bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Oxygen involved reactions, including oxygen reduction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reactions (OERs), play a key role in electrochemical energy devices, such as fuel cells and metal–air batteries. Recent theoretical calculations and experimental investigations reveal that the energy loss in ORR/OER is closely related to the triplet O2 generation/conversion step. However, the spin‐related phenomena have long been neglected in understanding of the ORR/OER mechanism. This review highlights recent advances in understanding and application of the spin‐related effect in oxygen electrocatalysis. It is demonstrated that the exchange interaction in magnetic catalysts can build a spin‐selective channel to filter the electron spins with appropriate orientation in the O2 generation/conversion step during ORR/OER. It is believed that the introduction of spin effect can establish a more comprehensive understanding of oxygen electrocatalysis and assist designing more reactive oxygen electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The electrocatalysis reactions involving oxygen, such as oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), play a critical role in energy storage/conversion applications, e.g., fuel cells, metal-air batteries, and electrochemical water splitting. The high kinetic energy barrier of the OER/ORR is highly associated with the spin state interconversion between singlet OH–/H2O and triplet O2, which is influenced by the spin state and magnetism of catalysts. This Review summarizes recent progress and advances in understanding spin/magnetism-related effects in oxygen electrocatalysis to develop spin theory. It is demonstrated that the spin states (low, intermediate, and high spin) of magnetic transition metal catalysts (TMCs) can directly affect the reaction barriers of OER/ORR by tailoring the bonding of oxygen intermediates with TMCs. Besides, the spin states of TMCs can build a spin-selective channel to filter the electron spins required for the single/triplet interconversion of O species during OER/ORR. In this Review, we introduced many approaches to modulating spin state, for instance, altering the crystal field, oxidation state of active-site ions, and the morphology of TMCs. What's more, a magnetic field can drive the spin flip of magnetic ions to achieve the spin alignment (↑↑) (i.e., facilitating spin polarization), which will strengthen the spin selectivity for accelerating the filtration and transfer of the spins with the same direction for the generation and conversion of triplet ↑O═O↑. Importantly, the origin of magnetic field enhancement on OER/ORR are deeply discussed, which provides a great vision for the magnetism-assisted catalysis. Finally, the challenges and perspectives for future development of spin/magnetism catalysis are presented. This Review is expected to highlight the significance of spin/magnetism theory in breaking the bottleneck of electrocatalysis field and promote the development of high-efficientcy electrocatalysts for practical applications.

Abstract:An external magnetic field can influence the oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR and OER) activity of paramagnetic heterogeneous molecular electrocatalysts, providing a new strategy for understanding spin‐dependent electrochemical processes. Understanding the spin‐dependent activity of nitrogen‐coordinated single metal atom (M‐N‐C) electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR and OER) remains challenging due to the lack of structure‐defined catalysts and effective spin manipulation tools. Herein, both challenges using a magnetic field integrated heterogeneous molecular electrocatalyst prepared by anchoring cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) deposited carbon black on polymer‐protected magnet nanoparticles, are addressed. The built‐in magnetic field can shift the Co center from low‐ to high‐spin (HS) state without atomic structure modification, affording one‐order higher turnover frequency, a 50% increased H2O2 selectivity for ORR, and a ≈4000% magnetocurrent enhancement for OER. This catalyst can significantly minimize magnet usage, enabling safe and continuous production of a pure H2O2 solution for 100 h from a 100 cm2 electrolyzer. The new strategy demonstrated here also applies to other metal phthalocyanine‐based catalysts, offering a universal platform for studying spin‐related electrochemical processes.

Abstract:Over the past few decades, development of electrocatalysts for energy applications has extensively transitioned from trial-and-error methodologies to more rational and directed designs at the atomic levels via either nanogeometric optimization or modulating electronic properties of active sites. Regarding the modulation of electronic properties, nonprecious transition metal-based materials have been attracting large interest due to the capability of versatile tuning d-electron configurations expressed through the flexible orbital occupancy and various possible degrees of spin polarization. Herein, recent advances in tailoring electronic properties of the transition-metal atoms for intrinsically enhanced electrocatalytic performances are reviewed. We start with discussions on how orbital occupancy and spin polarization can govern the essential atomic level processes, including the transport of electron charge and spin in bulk, reactive species adsorption on the catalytic surface, and the electron transfer between catalytic centers and adsorbed species as well as reaction mechanisms. Subsequently, different techniques currently adopted in tuning electronic structures are discussed with particular emphasis on theoretical rationale and recent practical achievements. We also highlight the promises of the recently established computational design approaches in developing electrocatalysts for energy applications. Lastly, the discussion is concluded with perspectives on current challenges and future opportunities. We hope this review will present the beauty of the structure-activity relationships in catalysis sciences and contribute to advance the rational development of electrocatalysts for energy conversion applications.

Abstract:Oxygen evolution and reduction reactions play a critical role in determining the efficiency of the water cycling (H2 O ⇔ H2 + <math> <mrow><mfrac><mn>1</mn> <mn>2</mn></mfrac> </mrow> </math> O2 ), in which the hydrogen serves as the energy carrier. That calls for a comprehensive understanding of oxygen electrocatalysis for efficient catalyst design. Current opinions on oxygen electrocatalysis have been focused on the thermodynamics of the reactant/intermediate adsorption on the catalysts. Because the oxygen molecule is paramagnetic, its production from or its reduction to diamagnetic hydroxide/water involves spin-related electron transfer. Both electron transfer and orbital interactions between the catalyst and the reactant/intermediate show spin-dependent character, making the reaction kinetics and thermodynamics sensitive to the spin configurations. Herein, a brief introduction on the spintronic explanation of the catalytic phenomena on oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is given. The local spin configurations and orbital interactions in the benchmark transition-metal-based catalysts for OER and ORR are analyzed as examples. To further understand the spintronic oxygen electrocatalysis and to develop more efficient spintronic catalysts, the challenges are summarized and future opportunities proposed. Spin electrocatalysis may emerge as an important topic in the near future and help integrate a comprehensive understanding of oxygen electrocatalysis.

Abstract:The development of high-efficiency atomic-level catalysts for energy conversion and storage technologies is crucial to address energy shortages. The spin states of diatomic catalysts (DACs) are closely tied to their catalytic activity. Adjusting the spin states of DACs' active centers can directly modify the occupancy of d-orbitals, thereby influencing the bonding strength between metal sites and intermediates as well as the energy transfer during electro-reactions. Here, we discuss various techniques for characterizing spin states in atomic catalysts and strategies for modulating their active center spin states. Then, we outline recent progress in the study of spin effects in DACs for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), electrocatalytic nitrogen/nitrate reduction reaction (eNRR/NO3RR), and electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (eCO2RR), and provide a detailed explanation of the catalytic mechanisms influenced by spin regulation of DACs. Finally, we offer insights on future research directions in this critical field.

Abstract:This paper employs a jigsaw design to visually merge the concepts of spin and electrochemical energy storage, introducing the novel idea of spin‐electrochemical energy storage. It discusses various mechanisms, modulation methods, spin state characterization techniques, and examines the future prospects and challenges, providing a comprehensive outlook on the development of this emerging technology. Developing high‐capacity and cyclically stable transition metal (TM)‐based electrode materials for energy storage devices, such as aqueous ion energy storage systems, is crucial for addressing the growing issue of energy scarcity. The spin state, or spin configuration of the d‐electrons, plays a vital role in the electrochemical energy storage performance of these materials. However, there has been a lack of systematic descriptions regarding the role of spin configurations in electrochemical energy storage to date. This review aims to elucidate the advantages of controlling the spin states of metal centers to enhance energy storage performance and highlights recent progress in employing spin state regulation in electrochemical energy storage. Additionally, it covers the various characterization techniques used to determine spin states. Finally, we discuss the future prospects and challenges within this emerging field, with the aim of accelerating the development of spin‐based electrochemical energy storage technologies. This review also seeks to provide clear and reliable directions for the design and preparation of novel energy storage materials.

Abstract:Creating highly effective electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) holds paramount importance in advancing carbon-neutral hydrogen production through water electrolysis. Recent research highlights the crucial role of spin effects on the OER, emphasizing that the manipulation of spin polarization is a promising strategy to augment the OER kinetics. Here, we present a core–shell heterostructure electrocatalyst, which leverages the strong coupling of the interface between antiferromagnetic Co3O4 and NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) to trigger a spontaneous magnetic response enhancement, which suggests the strong double exchange interaction at the interface of the core–shell heterostructure. This electrocatalyst displays a 26-fold increase in intrinsic OER activity compared to pristine NiFe-LDH at an overpotential of 0.25 V. Through experimental and computational analyses, we find that the strong double exchange interaction within the heterostructure creates polarized spin conduction channels at the interface, which enables efficient accumulation of electrons with appropriate spin states, thereby lowering the energy barrier for the generation of triplet O2. Our work presents a promising approach to designing high-performance OER catalysts by introducing spin selectivity in traditional metal oxide electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Fabricating advanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is of vital significance for the effectiveness of water splitting. Endowed with high catalytic performance toward OER, spinel-type materials are universally agreed to be one of most promising alternatives to the currently used noble metal-based electrocatalysts. Nonetheless, a major issue that limits the practical applications of spinel-type materials as OER catalysts is the high OER overpotential. Aiming to enable spinel-type materials to serve as practical OER electrocatalysts, intensive endeavors have been dedicated to the optimization of electrochemical properties by modifying their structures and compositions. Given that, summarizing the recent progress of spinel electrocatalysts with modified electronic configurations and their applications in OER is highly desirable. This review starts by introducing the OER mechanisms which involves with the conventional adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) and lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM). In addition, the OER pathways with spinel electrocatalysts and some important descriptors have also been summarized. Afterwards, many advanced strategies that have been demonstrated to be effective for optimizing the electrochemical properties of spinel electrocatalysts are predominately discussed. Finally, the perspective insights in advancing deep understanding and fabricating excellent spinel-type electrocatalysts are also manifested.

Abstract:Electrochemical processes for renewable energy conversion and generation represent promising pathways for lowering our dependence on fossil fuels yet critically depend on the efficiency of applied electrocatalysts, thus attracting considerable interest in the development of highly active and robust electrocatalysts for practical applications. In this review, we discuss recent progress in promoting electrocatalysis for renewable energy technologies based on surface or interface engineering with special emphasis on the geometric structures. We first introduce the state-of-the-art engineering methods for achieving the desired surface or interface and correlate these structures with their catalytic performances. Then, we describe classic examples of rational surfaces and interfaces for tuning metallic nanomaterials for several key catalytic reactions in renewable energy technologies, including the hydrogen evolution and oxidation reactions, oxygen reduction and evolution reactions, methanol oxidation reaction, and electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction. Finally, we provide personal perspectives to highlight the challenges and opportunities for metallic electrocatalysts in terms of catalysis-driven surface and interface engineering.

Abstract:The electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is influenced by the magnetic property of catalysts and the spin polarization effect helps explain how H2O split into H2 and O2 gases. However, the mechanism of OER still remains a mystery. A thorough understanding of spin configurations, orbital hybridization and coordination geometry of the magnetic electrocatalysts of OER are addressed. Magnetic property of catalysts influences the oxygen evolution reaction, and the spin polarization effect helps explain how the water molecule split into hydrogen and oxygen. Electrochemical splitting of water for hydrogen generation has emerged as a potential strategy for transitioning towards renewable energy sources and mitigating the environmental impact of fossil fuel dependence. However, the efficiency of water splitting is mainly hindered by oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the anode side, which involves kinetically sluggish four proton‐coupled electron‐transfer steps. Recent studies on OER demonstrate that a spin‐dependent mechanism governs the reaction kinetics, wherein the electronic exchange interactions in the catalytic activity of transition metals can provide a spin‐selective channel to filter out electron spins with the right orientation during the formation of O2. Maximizing efficiency and stability of such catalysts require optimization the geometric and electrical structures of transition metal systems. In addition, it is vital to understand the OER mechanism with spin considerations to be familiar with the connection between spin, charge, orbital, and lattice characteristics. This review focuses on current developments in understanding and the use of the spin‐related effect in the OER mechanism.

Abstract:Hydrogen fuel is highly valued as ideal clean energy to solve the environmental crisis. Electrolytic water splitting, as the most promising hydrogen production method, has been widely and deeply studied in recent ten years. On the other hand, lithium-ion batteries are considered the most popular energy storage equipment because of their high energy density, high working voltage, and long cycle life. However, the rapid development of society needs cheaper fuel, higher power density, and safer energy storage devices. Therefore, many new and efficient catalysts and electrode materials are being developed and explored. However, their electrochemical reaction mechanism must be clarified before they could be widely used in industry. In recent years, spin-dependent effects have been deeply studied in the field of catalysis and energy storage, which provides a theoretical foundation for analyzing the electrochemical reaction mechanism, preparing and screening promising catalytic and energy storage materials. This work summarizes the influence of spin-dependent effects on the physical and chemical properties of materials, mainly from four aspects, including electrocatalytic water splitting, metal-air batteries, lithium/sodium-sulfur batteries and lithium/sodium-ion batteries. Finally, we put forward some suggestions on the challenges and development of spin-dependent effects in catalysis and energy storage.

Abstract:Manipulating Single Atom Catalyst Spin State In article number 2408461, Hao Li, Yuan Chen, Li Wei, and co‐workers utilize polymer‐protected permanent nanomagnets to manipulate the spin state of a single atom catalyst. Without modifying atomic structure, significantly improved oxygen redox reaction performance is observed. This approach is applicable to other magnetic catalysts, offering a new strategy to investigate the spin‐dependent catalytic performance.
