Abstract:The Trojan Horse (TH) method is a powerful indirect technique that provides information to determine astrophysical factors for rearrangement processes at astrophysically relevant energies. A short coming for understanding the reliability of the technique has been determining the importance of nuclear and Coulomb effects on the energy dependence of the yield. Using a simple model, we demonstrate that off-energy-shell and Coulomb effects in the entry channel and the final state nuclear interactions do not change the energy dependence of the astrophysical factor extracted from the TH reaction. Some examples are presented.

Abstract:The Trojan Horse Method (THM) represents an indirect path to determine the bare nucleus astrophysical S-factor for reactions among charged particles at astrophysical energies. This is achieved by measuring the quasi-free cross section of a suitable three-body process. The method is also suited to study neutron-induced reactions, especially in the case of radioactive ion beams. A comprehensive review of the theoretical as well as experimental features behind the THM is presented here. An overview is given of some recent applications to demonstrate the method's practical use for reactions that have a great impact on selected astrophysical scenarios.

Abstract:In this Letter I argue that the Surrogate Method, used to extract the fast neutron capture cross section on actinide target nuclei, which has important practical application for the next generation of breeder reactors, and the Trojan Horse Method employed to extract reactions of importance to nuclear astrophysics, have a common foundation, the Inclusive Non-Elastic Breakup (INEB)Theory. Whereas the Surrogate Method relies on the premise that the extracted neutron cross section in a (d,p) reaction is predominantly a compound nucleus one, the Trojan Horse Method, assumes a predominantly direct process for the secondary reaction induced by the surrogate fragment. In general, both methods contain both direct and compound contributions, and I show how theses seemingly distinct methods are in fact the same but at different energies and different kinematic regions. The unifying theory is the rather well developed INEB theory.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss the $R$-matrix approach to treat the subthreshold resonances for the single-level and one channel, and for the single-level and two channel cases. In particular, the expression relating the ANC with the observable reduced width, when the subthreshold bound state is the only channel or coupled with an open channel, which is a resonance, is formulated. Since the ANC plays a very important role in nuclear astrophysics, these relations significantly enhance the power of the derived equations. We present the relationship between the resonance width and the ANC for the general case and consider two limiting cases: wide and narrow resonances. Different equations for the astrophysical S-factors in the $R$-matrix approach are presented. After that we discuss the Trojan Horse Method (THM) formalism. The developed equations are obtained using the surface-integral formalism and the generalized $R$-matrix approach for the three-body resonant reactions. It is shown how the Trojan Horse (TH) double differential cross section can be expressed in terms of the on-the-energy-shell astrophysical S-factor for the binary sub-reaction. Finally, we demonstrate how the THM can be used to calculate the astrophysical S-factor for the neutron generator $^{13}{\rm C}(\alpha,\,n)^{16}{\rm O}$ in low-mass AGB stars. At astrophysically relevant energies this astrophysical S-factor is controlled by the threshold level $1/2^{+}, E_{x}= 6356$ keV. Here, we reanalyzed recent TH data taking into account more accurately the three-body effects and using both assumptions that the threshold level is a subthreshold bound state or it is a resonance state.

Abstract:The Trojan-Horse method is an indirect approach to determine the energy dependence of S-factors of astrophysically relevant two-body reactions. This is accomplished by studying closely related three-body reactions under quasi-free scattering conditions. The basic theory of the Trojan-Horse method is developed starting from a post-form distorted wave Born approximation of the T-matrix element. In the surface approximation the cross section of the three-body reaction can be related to the S-matrix elements of the two-body reaction. The essential feature of the Trojan-Horse method is the effective suppression of the Coulomb barrier at low energies for the astrophysical reaction leading to finite cross sections at the threshold of the two-body reaction. In a modified plane wave approximation the relation between the two-body and three-body cross sections becomes very transparent. The appearing Trojan-Horse integrals are studied in detail.

Abstract:To explore a possible indirect method for $\rm ^8Be$ induced astrophysical reactions, the $\rm ^9Be=({}^8Be+\it n)$ cluster structure was studied via the Trojan Horse Method. It is the first time to study a super short life nucleus $\rm ^8Be$ via the Trojan Horse Method, and it is the first time to make a valid test for $l=1$ Trojan-horse nucleus. The $\rm ^9Be$ nucleus is assumed to have a ($\rm {}^8Be+\it n$) cluster structure and used as the Trojan-horse nucleus. The $\rm ^8Be$ nucleus acts as a participant, while the neutron is a spectator to the virtual $\rm ^8Be +{\it d}\rightarrow \alpha + {}^6Li$ reaction via a suitable 3-body reaction $\rm ^9Be +{\it d}\rightarrow \alpha + {}^6Li +\it n$. The experimental neutron momentum distribution inside $\rm ^9Be$ was reconstructed. The agreement between experimental and theoretical momentum distribution indicates that there should be a ($\rm {}^8Be+\it n$) cluster structure inside $\rm ^9Be$. Therefor the experimental study of $\rm ^8Be$ induced reactions, for example the experimental measurement of the $\rm ^8Be +\alpha \rightarrow {}^{12}C$ reaction proceeding through the Hoyle state, is possible.

Abstract:Nuclear reaction rates are among the most important input for understanding the primordial nucleosynthesis and therefore for a quantitative description of the early Universe. An up-to-date compilation of direct cross sections of 2H(d,p)3H, 2H(d,n)3He, 7Li(p,alpha)4He and 3He(d,p)4He reactions is given. These are among the most uncertain cross sections used and input for Big Bang nucleosynthesis calculations. Their measurements through the Trojan Horse Method (THM) are also reviewed and compared with direct data. The reaction rates and the corresponding recommended errors in this work were used as input for primordial nucleosynthesis calculations to evaluate their impact on the 2H, 3,4He and 7Li primordial abundances, which are then compared with observations.

Abstract:The surrogate nuclear reaction approach plays an important role in the determination of nuclear reaction cross sections that are difficult to be measured directly.In this paper,we investigate its basis,factors affecting its accuracy,and its three variants: the external surrogate ratio method(ESRM),the internal surrogate ratio method(ISRM) and the hybrid surrogate ratio method(HSRM).Each method was described,and their applications or experimental tests were given,from which we could see their respective advantages and disadvantages.And it is found that the spin-parity mismatch,or the(weak) Weisskopf-Ewing limit equivalently,is an inherent limitation of the approach.It is also seen that the surrogate approach can reach a high accuracy,so it is a good indirect approach when the nuclear reaction cross sections are unavailable to be measured directly.

Abstract:The Coulomb barrier and electron screening cause difficulties in directly measuring nuclear reaction cross sections of charged particles in astrophysical energies. The Trojan-horse method has been introduced to solve the difficulties as a powerful indirect tool. In order to understand experimental spectra better, Geant4 is employed to simulate the method for the first time. Validity and reliability of the simulation are examined by comparing the experimental data with simulated results. The Geant4 simulation can give useful information to understand the experimental spectra better in data analysis and is beneficial to the design for future related experiments.

Abstract:The Trojan Horse nucleus invariance for the binary d(d,p)t reaction was tested using the quasi free $^2$H($^6$Li, pt)$^4$He and $^2$H($^3$He,pt)H reactions after $^6$Li and $^3$He break-up, respectively. The astrophysical S(E)-factor for the d(d,p)t binary process was then extracted in the framework of the Plane Wave Approximation applied to the two different break-up schemes. The obtained results are compared with direct data as well as with previous indirect investigations. The very good agreement confirms the applicability of the Plane Wave Approximation and suggests the independence of binary indirect cross section on the chosen Trojan Horse nucleus also for the present case.

Abstract:We consider the dynamics of a small trojan companion of a hypothetical giant exoplanet under the secular perturbations of additional planets. By a suitable choice of action-angle variables, the problem is amenable to the study of the slow modulation, induced by secular perturbations, to the dynamics of an otherwise called `basic' Hamiltonian model of two degrees of freedom (planar case). We present this Hamiltonian decomposition, which implies that the slow chaotic diffusion at resonances is best described by the paradigm of modulational diffusion.

Abstract:Nuclear reaction data required for astrophysics and applications is incomplete, as not all nuclear reactions can be measured or reliably predicted. Neutron-induced reactions involving unstable targets are particularly challenging, but often critical for simulations. In response to this need, indirect approaches, such as the surrogate reaction method, have been developed. Nuclear theory is key to extract reliable cross sections from such indirect measurements. We describe ongoing efforts to expand the theoretical capabilities that enable surrogate reaction measurements. We focus on microscopic predictions for charged-particle inelastic scattering, uncertainty-quantified optical nucleon-nucleus models, and neural-network enhanced parameter inference.

Abstract:We present a numerical method for calculation of Ruelle-Pollicott resonances of dynamical systems. It constructs an effective coarse-grained propagator by considering the correlations of multiple observables over multiple timesteps. The method is compared to the usual approaches on the example of the perturbed cat map and is shown to be numerically efficient and robust.

Abstract:In this paper we address the indirect method, which can provide a powerful technique to obtain information about radiative capture reactions at astrophysically relevant energies. The idea of the indirect method is to use the indirect reaction $A(a, s\,\gamma)F$ to obtain information about the radiative capture reaction $A(x,\,\gamma)F$, where $a=(s\,x)$ and $F=(x\,A)$. The main advantage of using the indirect reactions is the absence of the penetrability factor in the channel $x+A$, which suppresses the low-energy cross sections of the $A(x,\,\gamma)F$ reactions and does not allow to measure these reactions at astrophysical energies. A general formalism to treat indirect resonant radiative capture reactions is developed when only a few intermediate states do contribute and statistical approach cannot be applied. Angular dependence of the triple differential cross section at fixed scattering angle of the spectator $s$ is the angular $\gamma-s$ correlation function. Using indirect resonant radiative capture reactions one can obtain the information about important astrophysical resonant radiative capture reactions, like $(p,\,\gamma), \,\,(\alpha,\,\gamma)$ and $(n,\,\gamma)$ on stable and unstable isotopes. The indirect technique makes accessible low-lying resonances, which are close to the threshold, and even subthreshold bound states located at negative energies. In this paper, after developing the general formalism, we demonstrated the application of the indirect reaction ${}^{12}{\rm C}({}^{6}{\rm Li},d\,\gamma){}^{16}{\rm O}$ proceeding through $1^{-}$ and $2^{+}$ subthreshold bound states and resonances to obtain the information about the ${}^{12}{\rm C}(\alpha,\,\gamma){}^{16}{\rm O}$ radiative capture at astrophysically most effective energy $0.3$ MeV what is impossible using standard direct measurements.

Abstract:Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a unique tool for operando studies owing to its non-invasive manner of signal detection. MRI can provide information about structure of the reactor, distribution of the reagents and products in the reactor, and heat and mass transport processes. However, the heterogeneous solid phase of a catalyst in a reactor largely distorts the static magnetic field of an MRI instrument, which leads to a major loss in spectroscopic resolution and measurement sensitivity. On top of that, many chemical reactions involve gases, so that the reduced spin density compared to liquids is yet another complication in such studies. To overcome these challenges, a proper choice of model catalytic reactors for NMR-based experiments is required. In this study, the configuration of model catalytic reactors was varied to explore its effect on the spatially resolved 1 H NMR spectra acquired during heterogeneous hydrogenation of propene to propane with parahydrogen over several supported metal catalysts. The results demonstrate that a judicial choice of a reactor geometry in combination with signal enhancement provided by parahydrogen makes such studies feasible and informative.

Abstract:Indirect methods have proven to be a complementary approach for extending our knowledge of nuclear structure and low-energy cross sections. Among these, the neutron-induced reaction cross sections appear to be of particular interest since their role both for unstable and stable beams. In view of this, we report here the combined study of the 17 O(n, α) 14 C reaction accomplished by the Trojan Horse Method (THM) and the asymptotic normalization coefficient (ANC) method. The low-lying 8038, 8125, 8213, and 8282 keV resonances in 18 O are studied, and their Γ n are derived. A comparison with recent direct data and recent THM experimental data is presented. The independent ANC investigation corroborates our previous THM results, confirms the consistence of the two indirect investigations, and shows new frontiers for neutron-induced reactions with radioactive ion beams. Moreover, we examined the impact of adopting the newly recommended 17 O(n, α) 14 C reaction rate on asymptotic giant branch stars' nucleosynthesis. Our findings reveal significant variations (≳10%) in the production of the neutron-rich heavy isotopes sensitive to neutron density, underlining the neutron-poisoning effect of 17 O on the s-process.

Study of (3He, t) charge exchange reactions to isobaric analog states in inverse kinematics

Abstract:The transition between isobaric analog states (IAS) in the (3He, t) charge exchange reaction presents a unique opportunity to access the isospin structure of the nuclei. In this study not only the Fermi transition but also the Gamow-Teller (G-T) transition of the IAS reaction were investigated for the 13,14C(3He, t) and 17,18,19,20O(3He, t) reactions, in order to explore the neutron number dependence of the IAS reaction for the light neutron-rich nuclei. It was found that the G-T type IAS reaction also exhibited a significant dependence of the transition strength on the neutron number and the angular momentum configuration of the nuclei. Additionally, the inverse kinematics was also discussed for extracting the yields of the interested reaction channels in the proposed experiments on radioactive beams. The calculated triton yields demonstrated the capability of the proposed experiments to obtain meaningful results.
