Abstract:Abstract The adhesive properties of a self-prepared bio-based epoxy resin with native cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are evaluated in this article. The porosity of actual CNCs is high. The most promising finding is the acquisition of high tensile modulus. The addition of CNC composites significantly increased the tensile modulus at lower wt.%, and the maximum crystallinity of CNCs was obtained. Bearing in mind the advantages of CNCs, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed a uniform distribution of concentrated CNCs. Clusters were formed at higher CNCs ratios, and the composite matrix content with high CNCs produced good expansion, low crystallinity, and increased elongation. Our analysis showed that the original CNCs were more evenly distributed in the self-prepared bio-based epoxy resin, which enhanced transformation, supported by improved dispersion of native CNCs. The presence of native CNCs greatly improved and enhanced the bonding performance of the bio-based epoxy resin in the interface area. Enhancing the mechanical properties of native CNCs has broad application prospects in environmental areas. This suggests that the widespread use of native CNCs in environmental engineering applications is feasible, especially in terms of adhesives properties.

Abstract:Polymer composite with reinforced fiber is a remarkable development in the field of engineering materials. The applications of composite materials have significantly increased in Defense, Aeronautical and Automobiles because of its specific modulus and high strength characteristics. In composite material development, nano particles reinforcement and nano fiber reinforcement are the most recent methods developed. In this research electrospun carbon nanofiber reinforced mat with polymer epoxy resin composites was prepared. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and ultrasonic scanning were used to study the morphology and the defect on the specimens for analyzing the structural conditions of the samples for determining the mechanical properties. The result clearly indicates that the Carbon Nanofiber (CNF)/ Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) mat improves the flexural strength of the epoxy resin and that 0.015% CNF in PVA gives a better mechanical strength.

Abstract:Epoxy-based nanocomposites were prepared by incorporating 0.3%, 0.5%, 0.7%, 1%, and 2% cellulose nanofibers (CNF) through a hand lay-up technique. The influence of the CNF as a reinforcement material on the morphology, and the physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of epoxy-based nanocomposites were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), density, void content, water absorption, tensile, flexural, impact strength, and thermogravimetric analyses. Compatibility between the nano-reinforcement and epoxy matrix was confirmed using SEM, which demonstrated that the CNF was homogeneously dispersed throughout the epoxy matrix. The mechanical properties were enhanced by increasing the CNF loading up to 1%. Moreover, the incorporation of CNF into the composites reduced the water uptake of the substrates in the water absorption test and resulted in a high thermal stability when exposed to a high temperature. Bamboo-CNF could be used as a potential reinforcement material to improve the properties of epoxy-based nanocomposites.

Abstract:Carbon fiber reinforced composites (CFRCs) are widely used in the aviation, aerospace and automotive industries. The modification of CFRCs with nanomaterials has attracted extensive research interests in recent years. Herein, we report the preparation of novel carboxylated aramid nanofibers (cANFs) by polymerization induced self-assembly, i.e. polycondensation of para-phenylenediamine with terephthaloyl chloride in the presence of a polyamide acid as both a dispersant and surface modifier, for the modification of epoxy resin and CFRCs. cANFs effectively improve the mechanical properties of epoxy resin, and after being sprayed onto CF fabrics, greatly improve the mechanical properties of CFRCs. With the addition of only 0.42 mg/cm2 of cANFs on each CF sheets, storage modulus, flexural strength, flexural modulus and total energy dissipation are enhanced by 27 %, 51 %, 29 % and 67 %, respectively; interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and Mode II interlayer fracture toughness (GIIC) are improved by 24 % and 74 %, respectively. cANFs can be comparable or even superior to most previously reported carbon nanomaterials in improving flexural strength and ILSS; and exceed most previously reported electrospun nanofibrous mats in increasing GIIC. This study provides a new method for the rapid synthesis of functionalized ANFs to simultaneously increase the flexural properties and interlayer properties of CFRCs.
Ice-Templated Cellulose Nanofiber Filaments as a Reinforcement Material in Epoxy Composites

Abstract:Finding renewable alternatives to the commonly used reinforcement materials in composites is attracting a significant amount of research interest. Nanocellulose is a promising candidate owing to its wide availability and favorable properties such as high Young’s modulus. This study addressed the major problems inherent to cellulose nanocomposites, namely, controlling the fiber structure and obtaining a sufficient interfacial adhesion between nanocellulose and a non-hydrophilic matrix. Unidirectionally aligned cellulose nanofiber filament mats were obtained via ice-templating, and chemical vapor deposition was used to cover the filament surfaces with an aminosilane before impregnating the mats with a bio-epoxy resin. The process resulted in cellulose nanocomposites with an oriented structure and a strong fiber–matrix interface. Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies revealed the presence of silane on the filaments. The improved interface, resulting from the surface treatment, was observable in electron microscopy images and was further confirmed by the significant increase in the tan delta peak temperature. The storage modulus of the matrix could be improved up to 2.5-fold with 18 wt% filament content and was significantly higher in the filament direction. Wide-angle X-ray scattering was used to study the orientation of cellulose nanofibers in the filament mats and the composites, and the corresponding orientation indices were 0.6 and 0.53, respectively, indicating a significant level of alignment.

Abstract:Epoxy is a thermosetting polymer and an engineering material for structural and composite applications. However, pure epoxy has disadvantages of stiffness and low toughness properties, so limiting its practical uses. Polyamide is an important thermoplastic polymer for commercial uses. Epoxy has been blended with polyamide (thermoplastic polymer) to enhance the toughness and mechanical properties. Consequently, epoxy/polyamide blend matrix has been developed for composite applications. Incorporation of carbonaceous nanoparticles in epoxy/polyamide blend has been used to improve the morphological and physical properties of these materials. This review describes scientific development in the field of epoxy/polyamide-based nanocomposite and composites. Epoxy/polyamide materials have been reinforced with micro- and macroscale carbonaceous fillers such as graphene, carbon nanotube, nanodiamond, carbon black, carbon fiber, and hybrid fillers. The strength, modulus, toughness, electrical, conductivity, thermal conductivity, and thermal stability properties of epoxy/polyamide have been influenced through the incorporation of nanofillers. The fundamentals and applications (coatings, adhesives, electronics, radiation shielding, automotive/aerospace) of these materials have been discussed. Toward the end, applications, future, and challenges of epoxy/polyamide-based nanocomposites have been comprehended.

Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part L: Journal of Materials: Design and Applications, Ahead of Print. The exceptional mechanical properties, dimensional stability and low cost of production of textile composites have made them quite popular in recent years. In the present analysis, plain woven inter, intra and hybrid carbon and E-glass fibre reinforced composites incorporated with or without nano-coconut shell ash (CSA) as filler were manufactured by hand lay-up method. The mechanical and thermal properties were determined for the manufactured composites. Simultaneously, the fractographic study was conducted by scanning electron microscopy to predict the different kind of failures in composites. The mechanical properties of the composites were found to be significantly better when 2 wt.% of CSA was substituted in it. The inter-hybrid composite containing 2 wt.% nanofiller demonstrated the highest tensile strength of 245.96 MPa, flexural strength of 496.03 MPa and maximum degradation temperature with weight change of 81.08%. A combination of intra- and inter-hybrid woven composite revealed the highest impact resistance of 3.3 J. The pseudo-ductile performance of intra-hybrid composites is also distinctly observed, showing moderate tensile stress of 299.376 MPa and maximum elongation of 5.137 mm. The current scientific effort makes it clear that the greatest tensile strength was obtained by positioning carbon fibres inside and the glass fibres outside. The surface proximity and diffusion of nanofillers in the composites further enhanced their tensile properties. Shear dispersion also led to maximum energy absorption without the need for nanofiller in case of combination of intra- and inter-woven fibre composites.

Abstract:Hybrid composite materials are a form of material that incorporates more than one type of reinforcement into a matrix to attain enhanced qualities. This usually includes the use of nanoparticle fillers in classic advanced composites with fiber reinforcements such as carbon or glass. In the current investigation, the impact of carbon nanopowder filler on the wear and thermal performance of the chopped strand mat E-glass fiber-reinforced epoxy composite (GFREC) were analyzed. Multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) fillers were used; they react with the resin system to contribute a significant improvement of properties in the polymer cross-linking web. The experiments were carried out employing the central composite method of design of experiment (DOE). A polynomial mathematical model was created using response surface methodology (RSM). To forecast the wear rate of composites, four machine learning (ML) regression models were built. The study's findings indicate that the addition of carbon nanopowder has a substantial impact on the wear behavior of composites. This is mostly owing to the homogeneity created by the carbon nanofillers in uniformly dispersing the reinforcements in the matrix phase. Results revealed that a load of 1.005 kg, a sliding velocity of 1.499 m/s, a sliding distance of 150 m, and 15 wt % of filler were found to be the optimal parameters for the efficient reduction of specific wear rate. Composites with 10 and 20% carbon contents exhibit lower thermal expansion coefficients than plain composites. These composites' coefficients of thermal expansion fell by 45 and 9%, respectively. If the carbon proportion increases beyond 20%, so will the thermal coefficient of expansion.

Abstract:Currently, numerous studies have shown that carbon nanofibres have mechanical properties that are replaced by other widely used fibres. The high tensile strength of the carbon fibres makes them ideal to use in polymer matrix composites. The high-strength fibres can be used in short form in a composite and mass-produced to meet the high demands of automotive applications. These composites are capable of addressing the strength requirement of nonstructural and structural components of the automotive industry. Due to these composite lightweight and high-strength weight ratios, the applications can be widely varying. The research for these materials is a never-ending process, as researchers and design engineers are yet to tap its full potential. This study fabricated phenolic resin with different wt% of carbon nanofibre (CNF). The percentage of the CNF as a filler material is varied from 1 to 4 wt%. Mechanical properties such as hardness, tensile strength, and XRD were investigated. Phenolic resin with 4 wt% of carbon nanofibre (CNF) exhibits maximum tensile strength and hardness of 43.8 MPa and 37.8 HV.

Abstract:Enhancing the tensile strength of CNC‐based epoxy composites through the addition of a low concentration of CNC. Epoxy polymers are commonly utilized in structural applications due to their high bearing capacity and excellent chemical resistance. However, their inherent brittleness poses a significant challenge for their use in high shock and fracture strength products. To address this shortcoming, fillers can be incorporated into the polymer during preparation. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of incorporating cellulose‐based fillers, namely cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC), on the mechanical properties of epoxy polymer composites. The study evaluated the impact of various factors, including filler concentration, particle size, and moisture content, on the mechanical properties of the composites. The results demonstrated that the incorporation of CNC or MCC powders at concentrations below 5% could enhance the mechanical properties of the resulting epoxy composites without adversely affecting their surface and thermal properties. The maximum tensile strength and fracture toughness of the filler‐based epoxy composites were achieved at 2 and 4 wt% for CNCs and MCC, respectively. CNCs with a smaller particle size distribution were found to be much more effective than MCC in improving the mechanical properties of the epoxy composites. Furthermore, utilizing dried fillers resulted in a higher improvement in tensile strength, which was achieved at lower filler concentrations.

Abstract:Polymeric nanocomposites are an emerging research topic, as they improve fiber-reinforced composites’ thermo-mechanical and tribological properties. Nanomaterials improve electrical and thermal conductivity and provide excellent wear and friction resistance to the polymer matrix material. In this research work, a systematic study was carried out to examine the tensile and hardness properties of a carbon fiber epoxy composite comprising nano-sized Al2O3 and SiC fillers. The study confirms that adding nano-fillers produces superior tensile and hardness properties for carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites. The amount of filler loading ranged from 1, 1.5, 1.75, and 2% by weight of the resin for Al2O3 and 1, 1.25, 1.5, and 2% for SiC fillers. The maximum tensile strength gain of 29.54% and modulus gain of 2.42% were noted for Al2O3 filled composite at 1.75 wt.% filler loading. Likewise, enhanced strength gain of 25.75% and 1.17% in modulus gain was obtained for SiC-filled composite at 1.25 wt.% filler loading, respectively. The hardness property of nano-filled composites improved with a hardness number of 47 for nano-Al2O3 and 43 for nano-SiC, respectively, at the same filler loading.
Recycled carbon fiber reinforced composites: Enhancing mechanical properties through co-functionalization of carbon nanotube-bonded microfibrillated cellulose

Abstract:The imperative challenge of repurposing recycled carbon fiber (rCF) in composite structures, due to its cost-effectiveness and eco-friendly attributes, has spurred innovative research. This study introduces a scalable processing technique, integrating carbon nanotube (CNT)-bonded microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) onto randomly oriented rCF mats, focusing on enhancing mechanical properties. Employing electrophoretic deposition (EPD), rCF surfaces are effectively functionalized with CNT/MFC, probed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Modified fiber surfaces exhibit reduced contact angles, indicating improved wettability. Epoxy-based composites, fabricated via vacuum infusion, show up to 32% and 27% improvements in tensile and flexural strength. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) confirms elevated storage modulus and energy dissipation capability. SEM analysis of fracture surfaces illustrates robust adhesion between coated fibers and the matrix, supporting the proposed approach's efficacy. This study unveils an innovative pathway to enhance recycled carbon fiber composite properties, extending their application potential in diverse engineering domains.

Abstract:Current research finds the suitability of natural fiber-reinforced polymer composites for industrial, automotive, marine, aerospace, and military vehicle applications, among others; they process being lightweight, high strength, ecofriendly, recyclable, and biodegradable. Bamboo fiber (Bambusoideae) mat, groundnut shell (Cocos nucifera) powder, copper particle, and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) fillers with epoxy resin are the primary materials. The key responsibility of MWCNT as a nanofiller is to improve the performance of materials by more than 80% and to attract the desirable properties such as high specific energy absorption of CNTs. An extensive investigation was carried out to determine the weight ratio between the total density and the water absorption rate of the composite. The maximal tensile and flexural strengths derived from EBGCM2 (E: epoxy; B: bamboo; G: groundnut shell; C: copper particle; M: MWCNT) were 50.66 MPa and 59.03 MPa, respectively. Addition of MWCNTs to specimens EBGCM2 and EBGCM3 and bonding the filler matrix by homogeneous mixing, but few nanoparticles are seen agglomerated. Flexural abilities of groundnut fiber/filler loading to strengthen the hybrid nanocomposites and the impact strength both quite improved than EB1 specimen. The neat epoxy and bamboo fiber composite (EB1) achieved 87.5 Shore-D hardness. SEM revealed (EBGCM3) improved interfacial adhesion between fiber and epoxy resin, but few nanoparticles are agglomerated, small molecules linked between the fibrous matrix, and the binding elements trapped in neighboring atoms, forming structural chains by the polymerization process.

Abstract:The mechanical properties of polymer nanocomposites can be improved by incorporating various types of nanofillers. The hybridization of nanofillers through covalent linkages between nanofillers with different dimensions and morphology can further increase the properties of nanocomposites. In this work, aramid nanofibers (ANFs) are modified using chlorinated cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and functionalized with 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane to improve the chemical and mechanical interaction in an epoxy matrix. The integration of CNC functionalized ANFs (fACs) in the epoxy matrix simultaneously improves Young's modulus, tensile strength, fracture properties, and viscoelastic properties. The test results show that 1.5 wt % fAC reinforced epoxy nanocomposites improve Young's modulus and tensile strength by 15.1% and 10.1%, respectively, and also exhibit 2.5 times higher fracture toughness compared to the reference epoxy resin. Moreover, the glass transition temperature and storage modulus are found to increase when fACs are incorporated. Thus, this study demonstrates that the enhanced chemical and mechanical interaction by the CNC functionalization on the ANFs can further improve the static and dynamic mechanical properties of polymer nanocomposites.

Abstract:A trade-off between enhancement of physical properties of the final part and the processability during manufacturing always exists for the application of nanocarbon materials in thermoset-based composites. For different epoxy resins, this study elaborates the impact of nanocarbon particle type, functionalization, and filler loading on the resulting properties, i.e., rheological, electrical, thermo-mechanical, as well as the fracture toughness in mode I and mode II loading. Therefore, a comprehensive set of carbon nanoparticles, consisting of carbon black (CB), single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), few layer graphene (FLG), and electrochemically expanded graphite (ExG), in purified or functionalized configuration was introduced in various epoxy resins, with different molecular weight distributions. A novel technique to introduce sharp cracks into single-edge notched bending (SENB) fracture toughness specimens led to true values. SWCNT show highest potential for increasing electrical properties without an increase in viscosity. Functionalized MWCNT and planar particles significantly increase the fracture toughness in mode I by a factor of two.

Abstract:Fiber-reinforced composite materials are lightweight and can withstand heavy loading conditions. Reinforcement augments the strength of the composite material, which is assessed by its elastic modulus. An attempt is made to reinforce epoxy with Coir Fiber, Carbon Nanotube (CNT) and Fly-ash. Central Composite Design (CCD), a Response Surface Methodology (RSM) tool, which is a Design of Experiment (DOE) technique, is used to fabricate the experimental samples to study their tensile behavior. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is employed to investigate the effect of reinforcement percentage of CNT, coir-fiber, and fly-ash on tensile behavior of composite. The ANOVA results follow the trend of the experimental values with a deviation of less than 10% in yield strength, tensile strength, and Young's modulus. Two models (Artificial Neural Network and Multiple Linear Regression Model) originated resting on the regression equation to speculate the elastic modulus for various reinforcement parameters using the experimental data. The main objective is to optimize reinforcement parameters using both the models having a maximum elastic modulus of 2.602 GPa and 2.682 GPa, respectively, which is achieved by the teaching learning-based optimization technique. Furthermore, confirmation experiments validate the optimization process with an error of less than 4%.

Abstract:The last two decades, in particular, have witnessed a large volume of research revolving around structure-property correlation in Carbon based nanocomposites, synthesized by several methods.In the simplest of terms, the electronic properties of these nanomaterials, which form the present context of discussion, vary mainly as a function of three parameters, out of which 2 are process parameters (viz. the kind of reinforcement and method of synthesis) and one is a structure-dependent parameter which is highly influenced by the two aforementioned process parameters and plays a vital role in determining the ionic and electronic transport phenomenon in these materials. To be more specific in the context of structure dependent parameter, the interaction between electrons and the equilibrium 0D (point) defects, along with different types of interfaces, plays a crucial role in the understanding of electronic properties, apart from physical and chemical properties in these materials. These materials find applications in a large number of sectors, such as nanoelectronics, supercapacitors, absorbent, photocatalytic, photovoltaic, solar cells, sensors, and energy storage due to their exceptional electronic, mechanical and chemical properties. The present chapter will intend to focus primarily on providing a brief overview of the state-of-the-art on research along with detailed discussions on some recent developments in determining and understanding electronic properties of some conventional Carbon-based nanocomposites (synthesized by several different techniques) based on the structure property correlation of these materials and finally, address some of the significant challenges in this field.

Abstract:There is a lack of systematic investigations on both mechanical and electrical properties of carbon nanofiber (CNF)-reinforced epoxy matrix nanocomposites. In this paper, an in-depth study of both static and dynamic mechanical behaviors and electrical properties of CNF/epoxy nanocomposites with various contents of CNFs is provided. A modified Halpin-Tsai equation is used to evaluate the Young's modulus and storage modulus of the nanocomposites. The values of Young's modulus predicted using this method account for the effect of the CNF agglomeration and fit well with those obtained experimentally. The results show that the highest tensile strength is found in the epoxy nanocomposite with a 1.0 wt% CNFs. The alternate-current (AC) electrical properties of the CNF/epoxy nanocomposites exhibit a typical insulator-conductor transition. The conductivity increases by four orders of magnitude with the addition of 0.1 wt% (0.058 vol%) CNFs and by ten orders of magnitude for nanocomposites with CNF volume fractions higher than 1.0 wt% (0.578 vol%). The percolation threshold (i.e., the critical CNF volume fraction) is found to be at 0.057 vol%.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, cellulose nanofiber (CNF) has become an avidly researched material in cutting edge research fields involving prominent researchers, both in academia and industry. This has become an exciting time reaching beyond just scientific curiosity as CNF is beginning to enter various marketplaces. CNF shows unique and potentially useful features, which includes abundance, high specific surface area, renewability, high strength, eco-friendliness and high crystallinity. It is an excellent material for polymer reinforcement. Many studies have been conducted to understand the effects of CNF as a filler in polymer composites. Interestingly, most CNF polymer composites have shown a better mechanical performance compared to the neat base polymer. Thus, this enhances the application of CNF into reinforced polymer composites in several industries such as automotive, packaging, medical implant, electronics, building material and paper. Therefore, in this review, the performances of CNF polymer composites are carefully evaluated. Beyond that, several factors influencing the performance of these composites are discussed.
Numerical and Experimental Analysis of Mechanical Properties in Hybrid Epoxy-Basalt Composites Partially Reinforced with Cellulosic Fillers

Abstract:The current work is focused on numerical and experimental studies of woven fabric composites modified by hybridisation with biological (cellulosic) filler materials. The mechanical performance of the composites is characterized under tensile, bending and impact loads and the effect of hybridisation is observed with respect to pure and nonhybrid composites. Numerical models are developed using computational tools to predict mechanical performance under tensile loading. The computational prediction results are compared and validated with relevant experimental results. This research is aimed at understanding the mechanical performance of basalt-epoxy composites partially reinforced with micro-/nano-sized bio-fillers from cellulose and intended for various application areas. Different weave structures, e.g., plain, twill, matt, etc., were investigated with respect to the mechanical properties of the hybrid composites. The effects of hybridizing with cellulose particles and different weave patterns of the basalt fabric are studied. In general, the use of high-strength fibres such as basalt along with cellulosic fillers representing up to 3% of the total weight improves the mechanical performance of the hybrid structures. The thermomechanical performance of the hybrid composites improved significantly by using basalt fabric as well as by addition of 3% weight of cellulosic fillers. Results reveal the advantages of hybridisation and the inclusion of natural cellulosic fillers in the hybrid composite structures. The material developed is suitable for high-end applications in components for construction that demand advanced mechanical and thermomechanical performance. Furthermore, the inclusion of biodegradable fillers fulfills the objectives of sustainable and ecological construction materials.
