Abstract:The aim of this study was to develop alginate-based hydrogels for application in horticultural field as bio-based substrate additives to control moisture. For this purpose, a 2-level factorial design was performed to select the appropriate levels of significant variables, i.e. polymer concentration (2-3 % w/v), CaCl2 concentration (0.2-0.4 % w/v), and cross-linking time (10-30 min). Statistical analysis showed that CaCl2 concentration and cross-linking time were the most significant variables affecting the swelling properties of the alginate-based hydrogels. Hence, two formulations (2 or 3 % w/v of alginate, cross-linked with 0.2 % w/v of CaCl2 for 10 min) were chosen for further analysis. A complete characterization of each material was performed in terms of swelling degree (SD) and kinetics in distilled and tap water, gel fraction, thermal properties, morphology, and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy. SD after 24 h in distilled water was above 55 g/g dry hydrogel in both formulations. Bioassays performed in lettuce plants as well as substrate microbiota provided evidence for the putative application of alginate-based hydrogels in horticultural systems, with an 80 % increase in fresh weight of the plants grown in substrate supplemented with 5 % hydrogels compared to control substrate after 7 days under drought conditions.

Abstract:Global water shortage is a crisis for all living systems, including agricultural cropping systems. Water absorbent hydrogels from synthetic polymers can retain moisture from irrigation or rainfall and release it in response to crop water demands, but have a limited functional lifespan and may release byproducts that are harmful to plants or pollute the soil environment. Hydrogels fabricated from plant-based polymers are more suitable for agricultural cropping systems because they could improve the soil water availability to the crop and gradually biodegrade to harmless carbon dioxide and water. The objective of this work was to determine how biodegradable lignin hydrogel affected the soil water availability to maize grown under drought conditions. The lignin hydrogel was applied at 0.3% and 0.6% (by weight) in pots subjected to water deficit or sufficiency, and compared to sodium polyacrylate hydrogel that was applied at the same rates. Maize plants were taller, had greater phosphorus content and more biomass when grown in soil with lignin hydrogel and sodium polyacrylate hydrogel than without hydrogel. Furthermore, soil receiving 0.6% lignin hydrogel produced significantly (P < 0.05) greater maize biomass and relative leaf water content, with an 86% reduction in leaf proline content and 10% less electrolyte leakage under severe drought conditions than without hydrogel. There was more soil soluble Na and Na uptake by maize in the sodium polyacrylate-amended soil due to solubilization of the Na+ ions from the sodium polyacrylate. We recommend lignin hydrogel as a soil additive to increase water availability to crops experiencing drought stress that will not release undesirable byproducts into the cropping system.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Hydrogels favor moisture retention in the substrate and can attenuate the effects of salt stress on the production of potted plants. In this context, this research sought to evaluate the use of hydrogel to mitigate the damage caused by the salinity of irrigation water on the emergence, growth, and thermal index of Tagetes patula L. seedlings. The research was carried out in a greenhouse, in September 2020, in the municipality of Fortaleza, Ceará State, Brazil. The design used was randomized blocks in a split plot. The plots corresponded to seven levels of electrical conductivity of the irrigation water - ECw (0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, and 6.0 dS m-1) and the subplots corresponded to four hydrogel concentrations (0, 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 g L-1), with five replicates and each subplot consisted of 27 seeds. The application of 3.0 g hydrogel L-1 of substrate favored the production of leaves and reduced the thermal index in plants associated with the increase in the salinity of the substrate up to 6.0 dS m-1. The use of 3.0 g L-1 hydrogel increases seedling height, leaf dry mass, and total dry mass compared to treatments without water-retaining polymer, even at moderate (2.0 to 3.0 dS m-1) and high (4.0 to 6.0 dS m-1) salinity levels, thus indicating a possible effect of mitigation of damage caused by the salinity of the irrigation water. However, the intensity of this mitigating effect decreases at higher levels of salt stress.

Abstract:The extensive use of mineral fertilizers has a negative impact on the environment, whereas wastewater and microalgal biomass can provide crops with nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, and have the potential to be used as a source of fertilizers in circular agriculture. In this study, a step-by-step resource utilization study of algae-containing wastewater generated from microalgae treatment of swine wastewater was carried out. When wheat seedlings were cultivated in the effluent after microalgae separation, the root fresh weight, seedling fresh weight, and total seedling length were increased by 3.44%, 14.45%, and 13.64%, respectively, compared with that of the algae-containing wastewater, and there was no significant difference in seedling fresh weight, total seedling length, maximum quantum yields of PSII photochemistry (Fv/Fm), and performance index (PIABS) from that of the Hogland solution group, which has the potential to be an alternative liquid fertilizer. Under salt stress, microalgae extract increased the contents of GA3, IAA, ABA, and SA in wheat seedlings, antioxidant enzymes maintained high activity, and the PIABS value increased. Low-dose microalgae extract (1 mL/L) increased the root fresh weight, seedling fresh weight, longest seedling length, and total seedling length by 30.73%, 31.28%, 16.43%, and 28.85%, respectively. Algae extract can act as a plant biostimulant to regulate phytohormone levels to attenuate the damage of salt stress and promote growth.

Abstract:Synthesis, characterization and application of a superabsorbent hydrogel from A. heterophyllus Lam seed polysaccharides. Sustainability in agriculture can only be achieved by protecting important resources, one of them being water. Availability of water in the soil greatly influences agricultural productivity. Hydrogels play a key role in ensuring water availability and achieving agricultural sustainability. A novel superabsorbent hydrogel was synthesized from Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam seed polysaccharides. The synthesized hydrogel was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Swelling capacity of the hydrogel in different solutions, water retention duration, its influence on the soil water holding capacity (SWHC), and degradation in soil were assessed. The hydrogel absorbs up to 326 g/g and degrades naturally at around 1.4 wt% daily. The hydrogel improved the SWHC by 34% at a concentration of 0.3% w/w. Further pot experiments with black gram (Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper) plants showed that the superabsorbent hydrogel ensured water availability for 35 days and relieved the plants from drought‐induced stress. The data presented here indicates that the synthesized hydrogel can potentially be used as a soil conditioner for the sustained release of water and fertilizer.

Abstract:The main focus of this study was on using radiation to make an ultra-absorbent hydrogel (UAH) from sodium alginate (SA) and gelatin (GL) biopolymers. This UAH can effectively handle water and nitrogen in wheat farming during drought stress. The hydrogel was synthesized by gamma irradiation-induced SA/GL/polyacrylamide crosslinking at 10–40 kGy. Varying SA/GL ratios affected swelling and the gel fraction of SA/GL/PAm hydrogels. The (SA/GL 17/83) hydrogel exhibited a 40.03 g/g swelling degree, while increasing SA content resulted in higher swelling, peaking at 75.5 g/g for (SA/GL 83/17). This indicated a synergistic interaction between SA and GL. The gel fraction also increased from 76.8 to 90.3%, with a higher GL content reflecting increased crosslinking. After multiple hydrolysis cycles, the hydrogel achieved 1293 (g/g) swelling and 36 days of water retention. When applied to wheat ( Triticuma estivum ) under drought stress, it significantly improved shoot length (18%), root length (43%), shoot fresh weight (49%), and shoot dry weight (51%) under extreme drought. The significant increases in protein and carbohydrate content in both shoots (up to 32% and 19%, respectively) and grains (up to 21% and 24%, respectively), along with the reduction in proline content (up to 38%), demonstrate that ultra-absorbent hydrogel (UAH) effectively enhances nitrogen content, photosynthesis, and overall plant health in wheat under varying drought stress levels. This novel SA/GL-based UAH holds promise for addressing water scarcity and agricultural challenges, offering a sustainable solution for water and nitrogen management under drought stress.

Abstract:Drought represents one of the most relevant abiotic stress affecting growth and yield of crop plants. In order to improve the agricultural productivity within the limited water and land resources, it is mandatory to increase crop yields in presence of unfavorable environmental stresses. The use of biostimulants, often containing seaweed extracts, represents one of the options for farmers willing to alleviate abiotic stress consequences on crops. In this work, we investigated the responses of Arabidopsis plants treated with an extract from the brown alga Ascophyllum nodosum (ANE), under drought stress conditions, demonstrating that ANE positively influences Arabidopsis survival. Pre-treatment with ANE induced a partial stomatal closure, associated with changes in the expression levels of genes involved in ABA-responsive and antioxidant system pathways. The pre-activation of these pathways results in a stronger ability of ANE-treated plants to maintain a better photosynthetic performance compared to untreated plants throughout the dehydration period, combined with a higher capacity to dissipate the excess of energy as heat in the reaction centers of photosystem II. Our results suggest that drought stressed plants treated with ANE are able to maintain a strong stomatal control and relatively higher values of both water use efficiency (WUE) and mesophyll conductance during the last phase of dehydration. Simultaneously, the activation of a pre-induced antioxidant defense system, in combination with a more efficient energy dissipation mechanism, prevents irreversible damages to the photosynthetic apparatus. In conclusion, pre-treatment with ANE is effective to acclimate plants to the incoming stress, promoting an increased WUE and dehydration tolerance.

Abstract:Drought stress poses a significant threat to agricultural productivity, especially in areas susceptible to water scarcity. Sunflower ( Helianthus annuus L.) is a widely cultivated oilseed crop with considerable potential globally. Jasmonic acid, a plant growth regulator, plays a crucial role in alleviating the adverse impacts of drought stress on the morphological, biochemical, and physiological characteristics of crops. Experimental detail includes sunflower varieties (Armani Gold, KQS-HSF-1, Parsun, and ESFH-3391), four drought stress levels (0, 25%, 50%, and 75% drought stress), and three levels (0, 40ppm, 80ppm) of jasmonic acid. The 0% drought stress and 0ppm jasmonic acid were considered as control treatments. The experimental design was a completely randomized design with three replicates. Drought stress significantly reduced the growth in all varieties. However, the exogenous application of jasmonic acid at concentrations of 40ppm and 80ppm enhanced growth parameters, shoot and root length (1.93%, 19%), shoot and root fresh weight (18.5%, 25%), chlorophyll content (36%), photosynthetic rate (22%), transpiration rate (40%), WUE (20%), MDA (6.5%), Phenolics (19%), hydrogen peroxide (7%) proline (28%) and glycine betaine (15–30%) under water-stressed conditions, which was closely linked to the increase in stomatal activity stimulated by jasmonic acid. Furthermore, JA 80 ppm was found to be the most appropriate dose to reduce the effect of water stress in all sunflower varieties. It was concluded that the foliar application of JA has the potential to enhance drought tolerance by improving the morphological, biochemical, and physiological of sunflower.

Abstract:Atmospheric water vapor, a ubiquitous and accessible clean water resource, is considered a promising freshwater alternative to alleviate water-deficient circumstances caused by nonnegligible pollution, climate change, and growing population. Sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting, which uses sorbents to capture vapor from the air and thermal energy to release absorbed water, has demonstrated great feasibility for moisture collection. In this work, a flexible hybrid photothermal vapor sorbent composed of hydrogel matrix of sodium alginate grafted-poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (Alg-g-PNIPAm), deliquescent salt calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ), and photothermal detonation nanodiamond (DND) was rationally synthesized. The composite sorbent showed water sorption of 1.85 g/g in 30 h at 80 % relative humidity and 25 °C. The absorbed water could be released under simulated sunlight by the photothermal conversion of DND and structural transformation of graft copolymer Alg-g-PNIPAm. Moreover, the hydrogel sorbent showed excellent reusability without apparent capacity fading. The polysaccharide-based hydrogel sorbent with super-elasticity and low cost has broad application prospects in effectively collecting moisture in the atmosphere.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Many research studies have shown the importance of seaweed extract (SWE) in alleviating stress damage to plants. In this study, we examined the effect of liquid SWEs made from brown seaweed, Fucus spiralis, on germination, growth, antioxidant enzymes and some biochemical attributes of durum wheat under different levels of NaCl concentrations. Application of SWE at different concentrations (5, 10, 25, and 50%) significantly enhanced seed germination and growth parameters under salt stress, especially with 25% of seaweed liquid extract. Results show that the activity of antioxidant enzymes increased with increasing the algal extract concentration to 50%. Therefore, algal treatment is proved to be an effective technique to improve the growth of wheat seedlings under salt stress conditions. This study provides important information on the identification and utilization of seaweed resources for agriculture and it is the first study to report on the uses of this macroalgae as biostimulants in agriculture. Oxidized sodium alginate/polyacrylamide hydrogels adhesive for promoting wheat growth

Abstract:Chemical modification of sodium alginate (SA) polymer chains can increase its functional group species. Sodium periodate (SP) was usually used to oxidize the hydroxyl groups on the chain of SA to aldehyde groups, the preparation of oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) using SP is not only complicated, also limits the variety of functional groups on the chain of OSA. By contrast, we have developed an innovative strategy for OSA, in which ammonium persulfate (APS) was used to oxidize SA, providing a clear elucidation of the oxidizing process and mechanism. OSA/PAM hydrogels were synthesized using OSA, the hydrogels possess excellent adhesion properties to various non-metallic and metallic substrates. Tensile and compression tests show that the cross-linked OSA/PAM hydrogels have superior mechanical properties. We exploit OSA/PAM hydrogels as soil adhesive and water-retaining agents for wheat growth. OSA/PAM hydrogels significantly improve the survival time of wheat grown in brown loam soil under a water-shortage environment, and slow down the wilting of wheat in a water-shortage environment and prolong the survival time of wheat in sandy soils. Our trials should make hydrogels important for wheat cultivation in brown loam soils and the development of desert areas.
Algal Bio-Stimulants Enhance Salt Tolerance in Common Bean: Dissecting Morphological, Physiological, and Genetic Mechanisms for Stress Adaptation

Abstract:Salinity adversely affects the plant’s morphological characteristics, but the utilization of aqueous algal extracts (AE) ameliorates this negative impact. In this study, the application of AE derived from Chlorella vulgaris and Dunaliella salina strains effectively reversed the decline in biomass allocation and water relations, both in normal and salt-stressed conditions. The simultaneous application of both extracts in salt-affected soil notably enhanced key parameters, such as chlorophyll content (15%), carotene content (1%), photosynthesis (25%), stomatal conductance (7%), and transpiration rate (23%), surpassing those observed in the application of both AE in salt-affected as compared to salinity stress control. Moreover, the AE treatments effectively mitigated lipid peroxidation and electrolyte leakage induced by salinity stress. The application of AE led to an increase in GB (6%) and the total concentration of free amino acids (47%) by comparing with salt-affected control. Additionally, salinity stress resulted in an elevation of antioxidant enzyme activities, including superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, and glutathione reductase. Notably, the AE treatments significantly boosted the activity of these antioxidant enzymes under salinity conditions. Furthermore, salinity reduced mineral contents, but the application of AE effectively counteracted this decline, leading to increased mineral levels. In conclusion, the application of aqueous algal extracts, specifically those obtained from Chlorella vulgaris and Dunaliella salina strains, demonstrated significant efficacy in alleviating salinity-induced stress in Phaseolus vulgaris plants.

Alleviation of salt stress in strawberries by hydrogen-rich water: physiological, transcriptomic and metabolomic responses

Abstract:As climate change and human activities continue to influence the environment, the area of arable land has been decreasing and becoming more susceptible to the impact of salt ions. Consequently, understanding the molecular mechanisms behind hydrogen's mitigation of plant salt tolerance is essential. In this study, strawberries were selected as the test plants, and analyses including physiological, biochemical, transcriptomic, and metabolomic approaches were conducted to elucidate the effects of hydrogen-rich water (HRW) under salt stress. The results indicated that under 100 mM salt stress, HRW significantly promoted plant growth, particularly increasing root biomass by 49.50%. Additionally, HRW regulated the levels of soluble sugars, malondialdehyde (MDA), and antioxidant enzymes, enhancing the cellular uptake of potassium ions and the expulsion of sodium ions. The levels of Ca2+ and Mg2+ in organelles increased by 2.06 and 2.45-fold, respectively. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that HRW substantially altered gene expression in strawberry roots; under salt stress, HRW up-regulated beneficial biological processes. Furthermore, genes related to ion absorption and transport, antioxidant enzymes, and cell wall biosynthesis were screened. Through integrating transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses which identified key common pathways in the differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) related to phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism, amino sugar and nucleotide sugar metabolism, and galactose metabolism. A molecular mechanism for mitigating salt stress in strawberry seedlings by HRW was provided by the integrated approaches in this research, reflecting the potential applications of hydrogen gas in agriculture.

Abstract:With environmental problems such as climate global warming, drought has become one of the major stress factors, because it severely affects the plant growth and development. Silicon dioxide nanoparticles (SiO 2 NPs) are crucial for mitigating abiotic stresses suffered by plants in unfavorable environmental conditions and further promoting plant growth, such as drought. This study aimed to investigate the effect of different concentrations of SiO 2 NPs on the growth of the Ehretia macrophylla Wall. seedlings under severe drought stress (water content in soil, 30–35%). The treatment was started by starting spraying different concentrations of SiO2 NPs on seedlings of Ehretia macrophyla, which were consistently under normal and severe drought conditions (soil moisture content 30-35%), respectively, at the seedling stage, followed by physiological and biochemical measurements, transcriptomics and metabolomics analyses. SiO 2 NPs (100 mg·L −1 ) treatment reduced malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide content and enhanced the activity of antioxidant enzymes under drought stress. Transcriptomic analysis showed that 1451 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the leaves of E . macrophylla seedlings were regulated by SiO 2 NPs under drought stress, and these genes mainly participate in auxin signal transduction and mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathways. This study also found that the metabolism of fatty acids and α-linolenic acids may play a key role in the enhancement of drought tolerance in SiO 2 NP-treated E. macrophylla seedlings. Metabolomics studies indicated that the accumulation level of secondary metabolites related to drought tolerance was higher after SiO 2 NPs treatment. This study revealed insights into the physiological mechanisms induced by SiO 2 NPs for enhancing the drought tolerance of plants.

Abstract:A viable and long-term method for producing clean water at hydrogel interfaces is solar-driven evaporation. This research utilizes the microgel polymerization technique to fabricate DCS-PNIPAm gels that exhibit exceptional swelling capacity and mechanical qualities. Electrostatic forces and hydrogen bonds between molecules occur between the sulfonic acid anions and ammonium cations inside the P(NIPAm-co-DMAPS) chains. Alginate is characterized by a high content of carboxyl and hydroxyl groups, which facilitate the establishment of hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions within the P(NIPAm-co-DMAPS) system. Semi-interpenetrating networks are formed in the hydrogel as a result of physical and chemical cross-linking brought on by these interactions. Consequently, the hydrogel’s mechanical characteristics and swelling capacity were significantly enhanced, and the water-collecting rate of DCS-PNIPAm reached up to 9.32 kg m–2 h–1 under one sun irradiation. Notably, the sodium alginate (SA) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) layer of the DCS-PNIPAm gel has excellent filtration properties, which can make it possible to use sunlight to purify water from various contaminated water sources containing dyes, oils, and metals.

Abstract:The water shortage is currently a major problem for agriculture around the world, and this, in turn, can negatively impact food safety. Therefore, in this article, acrylamide monomer (AAm) was bound by the cross‐linking agent N, N′‐methylene‐bis‐acrylamide (MBA) in amounts of 10, 15, and 20 mg along with microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) obtained from sunflower seed husk (SFH) and a biodegradable hydrogel in the soil layer with high sorption capacity was synthesized. As a result of the study, the AAm monomer found to be attached to the MCC matrix via intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The kinetics of swelling of the obtained hydrogels in aqueous, electrolytic and water‐ethanol, water‐acetone binary solutions at various amounts of cross‐linking agent were comparatively studied, and it was found that the water sorption potential of the natural polymer—MCC‐based hydrogel (MCC hydrogel)—is high at pH = 6.5 and corresponds to the pH of the soil environment. The study showed that the synthesized hydrogel is optimal when using 10 mg of a cross‐linking agent, has mechanical strength, withstands pressure up to 27 MPa, completely decomposes at 796°C, and has good thermal stability. It has been established that the pore sizes of hydrogel with 10 mg of cross‐linking agent lie within the range of 313.9 nm‐den 3.41 μm and belong to mesoporous materials, where the degree of swelling is 1176%. The MCC hydrogel was saturated with water from the soil within 5 days and collapsed within 35 days, releasing the absorbed water back into the soil, losing 66% of its mass and undergoing biological decomposition. These properties of MCC hydrogel allow it to be used as a "water‐retaining material" in agriculture.

Abstract:Severe water shortage limits horticultural crop growth and development, thereby compromising plant quality. Novel tools to enhance stress tolerance in medicinal horticultural crops are crucial to cope with growing environmental challenges to world crop performance. In this study, water solutions of robinin (25, 100, and 200 ppm) and/or foliar sprays of chitosan (0, 50, and 200 ppm) were applied to Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat subjected to a 2 (2DWI) or 6 day (6DWI) irrigation intervals for 6 weeks. Morphological, physiological, and genetic markers associated with plant-response mechanisms to water stress were explored. Robinin + chitosan-treated plants showed increased morphological performance associated with enhanced chlorophyll, carbohydrates, proline, K+, Ca+2, phenols, leaf water potential, antioxidants, and leaf water content. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) enzymes were more active in robinin + chitosan-treated plants, while H2O2 accumulation was diminished. Higher expression levels of the Chrysanthemum antioxidant gene of zinc-finger transcription factor gene (Cm-BBX24), Chrysanthemum roots fu (DREB1A-1), Chrysanthemum heat shock protein CgHSP70, pyrroline-5-carboxylate synthetases (P5CS), pyrroline-5-carboxylate reductase (P5CR), and proline dehydrogenase (ProDH) were found in robinin- and chitosan-treated plants. Robinin + chitosan treatment stimulated the accumulation of carbohydrates, K+, Ca+2, proline, and chlorophylls to achieve osmotic adjustment and maintain turgor pressure. Accumulation of reactive oxygen species was controlled by enzymatic and non-enzymatic means, as well as the overexpression of stress-related genes (Cm-BBX24, DREB1A-1, CgHSP70, P5CS, P5CR, and ProDH) in robinin + chitosan-treated plants Plant-response mechanisms for enhanced drought resistance interacted under robinin + chitosan treatment to improve plant performance under stress conditions.

Abstract:Soil degradation has become a major global problem owing to the rapid development of agriculture. The problems of soil drought and decreased soil fertility caused by soil degradation severely affect the development of the agricultural and forestry industries. In this study, we designed sodium alginate (SA)/sodium lignosulfonate (SLS) hydrogel based on the activation and crosslinking of inert Ca2+. CaCO3 and SA were mixed, and then, inert Ca2+ was activated to prepare a gel with a stable structure and a uniform interior and exterior. The crosslinking activated by inert Ca2+ enhanced the stability of the hydrogel, and the optimal swelling rate of the hydrogel reached 28.91 g/g, thereby effectively improving the water-holding capacity of the soil (77.6-108.83 g/kg). SLS was degraded into humic acid (HA) and gradually released, demonstrating a positive growth-promoting effect in plant growth experiments. The SA/SLS hydrogel can be used for soil water retention and mitigation to significantly decrease the water loss rate of soil. This study will assist in addressing soil drought and fertility loss.

Abstract:Using renewable biomass in agriculture, particularly microalgae as a biostimulant, offers economic and environmental sustainability benefits by reducing costs, improving nutrient cycling, and enhancing water use efficiency. Microalgae contain bioactive compounds that boost crop tolerance to environmental stresses, including salinity. Saline soils, characterized by elevated sodium chloride (NaCl) levels, negatively impact many crops, resulting in low productivity and high remediation costs. Therefore, this study evaluates the biostimulant properties of a microalgae-based commercial preparation (MR) on lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) plants grown hydroponically and exposed to saline stress. The extract was chemically characterized through elemental analysis, lipid composition (gas chromatography with flame ionization detector—GC-FID), the determination of functional groups (Fourier Transformed Infrared—FT-IR), structure (1H,13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance—NMR), with their hormone-like activity also assessed. Lettuce plants were treated with or without the microalgae blend, in combination with 0, 50 mM, or 100 mM NaCl. The contents of nutrients, soluble proteins, chlorophylls, and phenols, as well as the lipid peroxidation, antioxidants and root traits of lettuce plants, were estimated. The microalgae applied to salt-stressed plants resulted in a significant increase in biomass, protein, and chlorophyll contents. Additionally, significant effects on the secondary metabolism and mitigation of salinity stress were observed in terms of increased phenol content and the activity of antioxidant enzymes, as well as decreased lipid peroxidation. The potassium (K+) content was increased significantly in plants treated with 100 mM NaCl after addition of microalgae, while the content of sodium (Na+) was concurrently reduced. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that using microalgae can be a potent approach for improving the cultivation of Lactuca sativa L. under saline stress conditions.

Abstract:This paper highlights the potential of Sargassum algae, recovered from raw beach seaweed wastes, as a valid source of valuable sodium alginate. Alginate is a biodegradable, highly attractive polysaccharide widely used in food, pharmaceuticals, and biomedicine applications. The aim of this work is to employ a new eco-sustainable and cost-effective extractive method to obtain alginate as a raw material from pollutant organic Sargassum seaweeds. Algae were exposed to microwave pre-treatment under static and dynamic conditions, and three different extractive protocols were followed: (a) conventional, (b) hot water and (c) alkaline method. All samples were characterized by GPC, SEM, FTIR/ATR and TGA. It was found that alginate's best performances were obtained by the microwave dynamic pre-treatment method followed by alkaline extractive protocol. Nevertheless, the microwave pre-treatment of algae allowed the easiest breaking of their cell walls and the following fast releasing of sodium alginate. The authors demonstrated that microwave-enhanced extraction is an effective way to obtain sodium alginate from Sargassum-stranded seaweed waste materials in a cost-effective and eco-sustainable approach. They also assessed their applications as mulching films for agricultural applications.
