Abstract:A pronounced secondary β-relaxation is observed in a La-based bulk metallic glass that has a critical size at least 20mm in diameter. It is demonstrated that the β-relaxation is sensitive to the exothermic event below the glass transition (Tg), which can be mediated by a short time sub-Tg annealing, causing the atomic rearrangement in local cages. However, the correlation between β-relaxation and ambient compressive plasticity is not obvious in this alloy.

Abstract:Natural aging, which is the spontaneous temporal evolution of meta-stable systems, is a great task in amorphous materials. In this work, La62Al14(Cu5/6Ag1/6)14(Ni1/2Co1/2)10 BMGs with the same master alloy was prepared 8 years ago and at present. The effect of natural aging on the relaxation behavior and mechanical property of the La-based BMG was studied. Experimental results based on dynamic mechanical analysis and differential scanning calorimetry showed that natural aging for 8 years caused the atomic configuration to relax from a meta-stable state to a relatively more stable state, and the crystallization characteristic was also affected by natural aging. The results of compression testing indicated that the plasticity of the La-based BMG would be reduced, as a result of structural relaxation caused by natural aging.

Abstract:The mechanical relaxation behavior of the (La0.5Ce0.5)65Al10(CoxCu1−x)25 at% (x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8) metallic glasses was probed by dynamic mechanical analysis. The intensity of the secondary β relaxation increases along with the Co/Cu ratio, as has been reported in metallic glasses where the enthalpy of mixing for all pairs of atoms is negative. Furthermore, the intensity of the secondary β relaxation decreases after physical aging below the glass transition temperature, which is probably due to the reduction of the atomic mobility induced by physical aging.

Abstract:The dynamic relaxation process of amorphous alloys is an important issue to understand the diffusion behavior, plastic deformation as well as glass transition phenomenon. In the current research, (La 0.6 Ce 0.4 ) 65 Al 10 Co 25 amorphous alloy with a pronounced β relaxation process was selected as a model system to study the dynamic mechanical relaxation processes. Influence of driving frequency, physical aging and applied strain amplitude on the β relaxation of the La-based metallic glass was probed process using dynamic mechanical analysis. The experimental results demonstrated that the peak of the β relaxation process shifts to high temperature by increasing the driving frequency. Physical aging below the glass transition temperature induces a decrease of the intensity of the β relaxation process. The “defects” of amorphous alloy decreases during the physical aging process, which is ascribed to the glassy system shifts to more stable state induced by physical aging treatment. In parallel, the intensity of the β relaxation process of the amorphous alloy increases by increasing strain amplitude. The research sheds new light on further understanding the physical origin of β relaxation process of the amorphous alloy.

Abstract:The relaxation spectrum of glassy solids has long been used to probe their dynamic structural features and the fundamental deformation mechanisms. Structurally complicated glasses, such as molecular glasses, often exhibit multiple relaxation processes. By comparison, metallic glasses have a simple atomic structure with dense atomic packing, and their relaxation spectra were commonly found to be simpler than those of molecular glasses. Here we show the compelling evidence obtained across a wide range of temperatures and frequencies from a La-based metallic glass, which clearly shows two peaks of secondary relaxations (fast versus slow) in addition to the primary relaxation peak. The discovery of the unusual fast secondary relaxation unveils the complicated relaxation dynamics in metallic glasses and, more importantly, provides us the clues which help decode the structural features serving as the ‘trigger’ of inelasticity on mechanical agitations.

Abstract:Studying the primary {\alpha}- and secondary {\beta}-relaxation process has contributed significantly to the understanding of the structure and rheology of metallic glasses. In this letter, we report on a third relaxation mechanism indicated by a maximum in the loss modulus at low temperatures, which we term {\gamma}-relaxation. Contrary to the {\alpha}- and {\beta}-relaxation mechanisms, this irreversible, low energy excitation causes a macroscopic rejuvenation, which we assign to non-affine atomic rearrangements in the matrix that are driven by thermal stresses during cooling. Observed in three different glassy alloys, the low temperature relaxation is identified as a general process in metallic glasses.

Abstract:The Johari-Goldstein secondary (β) relaxation is an intrinsic feature of glasses, which is crucial to many properties of disordered materials. One puzzling feature of β-relaxation is its wide relaxation peak, which could imply a critical role of entropy. Here we quantify the activation entropy related to the β-relaxation in metallic glass via well-tempered metadynamics simulations. The activation free energy of the β-relaxation drastically decreases with increasing temperature, indicating a strongly entropic effect that may contribute a multiplication prefactor up to several orders of magnitude to the frequency. We further argue the entropic effect by linear extrapolation of the temperature-dependent activation free energy to 0 K, which gives rise to activation energy, in agreement with the barrier spectrum explored by the activation-relaxation technique. The entropic effect signifies the multiplicity of activation pathways which agrees with the experimentally found wide frequency domain of the β-relaxation.

Structural Signature of Beta-Relaxation in La-Based Metallic Glasses.

Abstract:The secondary beta-relaxation is an intrinsic feature in glassy materials. However, its structural origin is still not well understood. Here we report that the beta-relaxations in La50Al15Ni35 and La50Al15Cu35 metallic glasses (MGs) mainly depend on the vibration of small Ni and Cu atoms in local cages. By using advanced synchrotron X-ray techniques and theoretical calculations, we elucidate that the tricapped-trigonal-prism-like polyhedra with more large La atoms in shells favor the local vibration of center Ni atoms, leading to the pronounced beta-relaxation event. In contrast, the in-cage vibration of Cu atoms is somehow suppressed by the appearance of more shell Cu atoms. Nevertheless, they could easily diffuse out of the cages compared with Ni, thus triggering the onset of alpha-relaxation. This work provides a pathway to understand the different structural relaxation behaviors in MGs and other disordered materials from their local atomic packing and dynamics points of view.
Metallic Nanoglasses with Promoted β-Relaxation and Tensile Plasticity

Abstract:The secondary (β) relaxation is an intrinsic feature of glassy systems and is crucial for the mechanical properties of metallic glasses. However, it remains puzzling what structural features control the β-relaxation fundamentally. Here, we use the recently developed nanoglasses exhibiting well-defined structural features at the nanometer scale to interrogate such structure–dynamics relations. We show that an electrodeposited Ni<sub>77.5</sub>P<sub>22.5</sub> nanoglass exhibits promoted β-relaxation and enhanced microscale tensile plasticity over the most rapidly melt-quenched metallic glass with the same composition. Structurally, the β-relaxation is sensitive to the interfacial regions among grains in the nanoglasses. Our results reveal a clear correlation between the amorphous nanostructures and the β-relaxation. Abstract:Abstract How glasses relax at room temperature is still a great challenge for both experimental and simulation studies due to the extremely long relaxation time-scale. Here, by employing a modified molecular dynamics simulation technique, we extend the quantitative measurement of relaxation process of metallic glasses to room temperature. Both energy relaxation and dynamics, at low temperatures, follow a stretched exponential decay with a characteristic stretching exponent β = 3/7, which is distinct from that of supercooled liquid. Such aging dynamics originates from the release of energy, an intrinsic nature of out-of-equilibrium system, and manifests itself as the elimination of defects through localized atomic strains. This finding is also supported by long-time stress-relaxation experiments of various metallic glasses, confirming its validity and universality. Here, we show that the distinct relaxation mechanism can be regarded as a direct indicator of glass transition from a dynamic perspective.

Aging Behaviors in a La-Based Metallic Glass Revealed by Two-Time Correlation Functions

Abstract:Intermittent aging was observed in metallic glasses (MGs). However, its origin remains unclear. From two-time correlation functions measured by X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy, we here find that the intermittent aging is thermal history-dependent and can slightly quicken the dynamics of the system when it occurs, which is likely because of the different dynamics responses of the amorphous and newly formed nanocrystals in the as-quenched La(70)Al(15)Ni(15 )MG sample upon step-cooling from near-below glass transition temperature. In contrast, a sudden fast-to-slow atomic dynamics transition is observed in the preannealed MG sample when the preannealing temperature is approached upon cooling, resulting from the configuration memory effect of a low-energy state created by preannealing. Our findings demonstrate that the thermal history can give rise to significantly different aging dynamics of MGs, providing an in-depth understanding of structural relaxation in disordered materials on the atomic level.

Abstract:Establishing the structure-property relationship is an important goal of glassy materials but is usually impeded by the disordered structures and the non-equilibrium nature. Recent studies have illustrated that secondary (β) relaxation is a property-handler in a range of glassy maters. However, it has been challenging to identify pertinent structural features governing it. In this work, we show that the so-called polyamorphous transition in metallic glasses offers an opportunity to distinguish the structural length scale of β relaxation. We find that while the glass transition temperature and medium-range orders (MRO) change rapidly across the polyamorphous transition, the intensity of β relaxation and the short-range orders (SROs) evolve in a similar way as that in an ordinary reference glass without polyamorphous transition. Our findings suggest that the MRO accounts mainly for the global stiffening of the materials and the glass transition, while the SRO contributes more to β relaxation per se.

Abstract:The discovery of secondary relaxation in metallic glass (MG) breaks the longstanding cognition that MG, as a simple glassy system, exhibits only α relaxation and contributes significantly to the understanding of the structure and mechanical properties of MG. In this work, two independent fast secondary relaxation peaks corresponding to γ and β′ relaxation were detected by dynamic mechanical measurement in several Dy-based MGs at temperatures far below the glass transition temperature. Compared with β′ relaxation, the novel γ relaxation is activated at lower temperatures and possesses smaller activation energy approximately 2/3 of that for β′ relaxation. By exciting γ relaxation, loosely packed regions evolve into vein-like patterns in the fracture surface, leading to unusual plasticity at cryogenic temperatures. Furthermore, a holistic relaxation spectrum including boson peak, fast γ and β′ relaxation, slow β relaxation and primary α relaxation in MG was depicted.

Abstract:Metallic glasses with pronounced high-frequency beta relaxation in their dynamic-mechanical response have been observed to exhibit large plasticity. Due to their disordered atomic structure, it is challenging to identify the microscopic mechanisms of their relaxation behavior. Quasistatic anelastic relaxation measurements have been performed over 10 orders of magnitude of time on La55Ni20Al25 metallic glass, which exhibits a strong beta relaxation. The corresponding time-constant spectra were computed from the data-they contain a series of peaks corresponding to an atomically quantized hierarchy of shear transformation zones (STZs), where both the alpha and beta relaxations are consistent with the STZ model. Two different regimes of activation-volume increment between the peaks are observed, suggesting the involvement of different elements in STZs corresponding to alpha vs beta relaxations. Room-temperature structural relaxation significantly affects the former but not the latter.

Abstract:This study explores the influence of heat treatment paths on the structural relaxation of metallic glasses (MGs) in the regime of fast dynamics. We create MG samples using various quenching rates, from 109 to 1011 K/s, and expose these samples to near- Tg heat treatments with assorted combinations of heating (cooling) rates, from 5×1010 to 5×1012 K/s, and annealing durations, from 10 ps to 10 ns. Results show that the effect of the heating rate is intricately tied to the initial structure of the MG, while a decrease in the cooling rate invariably intensifies the aging process. Extending the annealing duration may induce either aging or rejuvenation, subject to the specific thermal history. To interpret these findings, we hypothesize that the memory effect, governed by the activation and annihilation of reversible and irreversible flow units, underpins the rejuvenation-aging competition in MGs. Moreover, we suggest viewing the cooling stage as an annealing phase controlled by gradient temperature and fine-tuning its rate to achieve the targeted active-flow unit distributions. Thermal History Dependent Aging Dynamics in a La-Based Metallic Glass

Abstract:The atomic dynamics in metallic glasses (MGs) are closely related to their stability. Due to weak resistance to nanocrystallization at high temperatures, we interestingly observe the slow atomic dynamics happening in an as-quenched La-Al-Ni MG sample compared with a sub-Tg pre-annealed one when cooling from about 0.99Tg (Tg the glass transition temperature). An intermittent aging behavior also appears in the as-quenched MG sample only on cooling but not on heating, nor does it appear in the pre-annealed sample on both cooling and heating, indicating that it could be thermal history dependent and related to the existence of nanocrystals. Differently, a sudden atomic dynamics transition from fast to slow is observed in the pre-annealed MG sample when the pre-annealing temperature is approached upon cooling, resulting from the configuration recovery to a low energy state created by pre-annealing. Our findings demonstrate that the thermal history can give rise to significantly different aging dynamics of MGs , providing an in-depth understanding of structural relaxation in disordered materials on the atomic level.

Abstract:The atomic dynamics and its structure dependence in a glass are fundamental issues but still little understood for decades. Through state-of-the-art experiment and simulation, we reveal that the annihilation of excess free volume in a β-relaxation pronounced La–Al–Ni metallic glass slows down the atomic motion by one order of magnitude upon annealing, which is mainly caused by the change of subatomic cavities and enhanced network structure resulting from the presence of Ni atoms, showing significant difference from a β-relaxation unpronounced La–Al–Cu glass. Our findings provide insights into the dynamics and atomic structure of La-based metallic glasses and will be helpful in understanding the microscopic dynamic behavior of metallic glasses in general.
