Abstract:Deep eutectic solvents (DES) are assuming increased importance in mineral resource processing in view of their environmental benignity. A detailed study is made on the applicability of two typical choline chloride-based DES consisting of lactic acid (LA) and paratolylsulfonic acid (pTSA) for leaching of rare earth element (REE) values from a micro-granite type hard rock deposit (Bhatikhera, Rajasthan) assaying 0.36% REE. The weight ratio of light REE (LREE) and heavy REE (HREE) in the ore is 60:40. The study assumes significance as indigenous resources of HREE are very meagre. Allanite, gittinsite and zircon are the REE carriers. The combination of ChCl:pTSA gave better leaching efficiency over ChCl:LA. ChCl:pTSA(1:1) yielded REE leachability of about 95% under optimum process conditions. Viscosity and reaction temperature play critical role. About 98% of dissolved REE could be precipitated as REE-fluoride which is 85% pure. The study proposes probable leaching mechanism of REE with ChCl:pTSA(1:1).
