Abstract:Perioperative medicine is an evolving area of medicine in which collaboration between internists, hospitalists, surgeons and anesthesiologists is the key to delivering high-quality care. Research in all areas of perioperative medicine, including perioperative anemia, is constantly evolving. Perioperative anemia is a major contributor to mortality and morbidity in the perioperative period. It is associated with an increased likelihood of postoperative wound complications, infections, delirium, increased length of stay and increased risk of readmissions. However, there is a lack of comprehensive guidelines for management of perioperative anemia. We performed an exhaustive review of contemporary literature on perioperative anemia and present evaluation and management recommendations that have the potential to impact clinical practice in the perioperative period.

Abstract:As health care systems undergo a transition from reactive to proactive medicine and begin to value the importance of patientdriven outcome measures, the role of anesthesiologists as perioperative physicians has great opportunity for growth. The perioperative management of anemia is one such area where anesthesiologists can lead, in partnerships with hematologists and surgeons, to improve the health and outcomes of surgical patients. This requires moving beyond intraoperative and immediate postoperative management of anemia to a proactive role in the preoperative assessment and management of this common comorbidity. This article discusses the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and outcomes associated with perioperative anemia and management throughout the perioperative care arc with a focus on the preoperative period. We present the latest evidence and a practical approach to implementing that evidence in the perioperative period.

A multicentre prospective observational study of the prevalence of preoperative anaemia and iron deficiency in adult elective surgical patients in hospitals in Western Cape Province, South Africa

Abstract:Background: Preoperative anaemia has been shown to be an independent risk factor for postoperative morbidity and mortality. Iron deficiency is the leading cause of anaemia globally. There are limited data describing the burden of perioperative anaemia and the relative contribution of iron deficiency in South Africa (SA). Objectives: To determine the prevalence and severity of preoperative anaemia in adults presenting for elective surgery in Western Cape Province, SA, and to investigate the contribution of iron deficiency as a cause of the anaemia. For this purpose, an investigative protocol from a recent consensus statement on the management of perioperative anaemia was applied. Methods: We performed a prospective, observational study in adult patients presenting for elective non-cardiac, non-obstetric surgery over a 5-day period at six Western Cape government-funded hospitals. The World Health Organization patient classification was applied, and patients with anaemia were investigated for iron deficiency. Results: The prevalence of preoperative anaemia was 28% (105/375; 95% confidence interval (CI) 23.5 - 32.5); 55/105 patients (52%) had moderate and 11/105 (11%) severe anaemia. Iron deficiency was the cause of anaemia in 37% (32/87; 95% CI 26.6 - 46.9), but only 9% of iron-deficient patients received iron supplementation prior to surgery. Conclusions: Preoperative anaemia was common in this study, and more than half of the affected patients had moderate to severe anaemia. Iron deficiency was responsible for almost 40% of cases. Iron supplementation was under-utilised in the preoperative period as a means of increasing haemoglobin. The introduction of system-wide policies would empower perioperative physicians to mitigate the risk associated with preoperative anaemia in the Western Cape.

Abstract:Preoperative anemia affects 30–40% of patients undergoing major surgery and is an independent risk factor for perioperative blood transfusion, morbidity, and mortality. Absolute or functional iron deficiency is its leading cause. Nonanemic hematinic deficiencies are also prevalent and may hamper preoperative hemoglobin optimization and/or recovery from postoperative anemia. As modifiable risk factors, anemia and hematinic deficiencies should be detected and corrected prior to major surgical procedures. Postoperative anemia is even more common (up to 80–90%) due to surgery-associated blood loss, inflammation-induced blunted erythropoiesis, and/or preexisting anemia. Preoperative oral iron may have a role in mild-to-moderate anemia, provided there is sufficient time (6–8 weeks) and adequate tolerance of oral preparations. Postoperative oral iron is of little value and rife with gastrointestinal adverse events. Intravenous iron should preferentially be used in cases of moderate-to-severe iron deficiency anemia, concomitant use of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents, short time to surgery or nonelective procedures, and for postoperative anemia management. Minor infusion reactions to intravenous iron are rare, the incidence of severe anaphylactic reactions is extremely low, and there is no increase in infections with intravenous iron. Currently available intravenous iron formulations allowing administration of large single doses are preferred.

Abstract:Abstract Purpose of Review Preoperative anemia is independently associated with worse postoperative outcomes following cardiac and noncardiac surgery. This article explores the current understanding of perioperative anemia and iron deficiency with reference to definition, diagnosis, and treatment. Recent Findings Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anemia. It can arise from reduced iron intake, poor absorption, or excess iron loss. Inflammation throughout the preoperative period can drive iron sequestration, leading to a functional deficiency of iron and the development of what was referred to until recently as the “anemia of chronic disease.” Current best practice guidance supports the routine administration of preoperative intravenous iron to treat anemia despite limited evidence. This “one size fits all” approach has been called into question following results from a recent large, randomized trial (the PREVENTT trial) that assessed the use of a single dose of intravenous iron compared to placebo 10–42 days before major abdominal surgery. Although there were no improvements in patient-centered outcomes apparent during the initial hospital stay, secondary endpoints of this trial suggested there may be some late benefit after discharge from the hospital (8 weeks postoperatively). This trial raises questions on (1) the mechanisms of iron deficiency in the perioperative patient; (2) the need to reassess our opinions on generic anemia management; and (3) the need to address patient outcomes after discharge from hospital. Summary Despite the known associations between preoperative anemia (particularly iron deficiency anemia) and poor postoperative outcome, recent evidence suggests that administering intravenous iron relatively close to surgery does not yield a tangible short-term benefit. This is made more complex by the interplay between iron and innate immunity. Iron deficiency irrespective of hemoglobin concentration may also impact postoperative outcomes. Therefore, further research into associations between iron deficiency and postoperative outcomes, and between postoperative anemia, delayed outcomes (hospital readmission), and the efficacy of postoperative intravenous iron is required.

Abstract:Aim of the study: To describe the perioperative care of anemia in emergency abdominal surgery in the National Hospital of Niamey. Patients and methods: This was a prospective and descriptive study that lasted 6months, from June 6th to December 9th, 2020. Were inclueded in the study, all the patients admitted in the department of surgical emergencies who presented acute surgical abdomen associated with anemia. The main studied variables were: age, gender, history, CBC results, American Society of Anesthesiologists score (ASA), indications, etiological diagnosis, incidents and intraoperative accidents, post operative complications, treatment of the anemia, evolution and duration of hospitalization. Statistical analysis of the data was done using SPSS version 25, graphics and data entry were done with Word and Excel 2016 softaware. The average values were calculated for each variable for each patient and examinated by the chi2 test for qualitative variables. P value < 0,05 was considered as significant. Results: Our study involved 147 patients out of 581 admissions, i.e a frequency of 25.30%. the average age of the patients was 16.27 years with extremes of 2 and 70 years, the male gender predominated with 64.63% (n=95) and a sex ratio of 1.83. The main preoperative diagnosis was acute peritonitis in 78.91% f cases (n=120) and peritonitis by ileal perforation was the first etiology with 63.94% (n=94). The majority of our patients had moderate preoperative anemia in 73.47% (n=108) and severe anemia in 21.09% (n=31) of cases. The management of anemia was based on blood transfusion which was performed in 10.20% of cases (n=15) preoperatively and 32.65% of cases (n=48) intraoperatively. In the postoperative period, the treatment of anemia was essentially based on oral iron supplementation. Intra operative incidents and accidents were significantly associated with the severity of anemia preoperatively. Parietal suppuration was the main postoperative complication, ie 70.6% ..
Optimization of Preoperative Anemia in Lower Limb Joint Replacement Surgery

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Orthopaedic procedures such as total hip and total knee replacements carry a significant risk of postoperative anemia, necessitating allogenic blood transfusions (ABTs), and an increased hospital length of stay. AIM: Our aim was to investigate whether the implementation of a local protocol designed to detect and treat preoperative anemia resulted in reduced ABT rates and a shorter duration of length of hospital stay (LOS). METHODS: We retrospectively audited 683 patients undergoing primary hip and knee replacements. We collated data for all patients about hospital length of stay and blood transfusions received. Both descriptive statistics and univariate analysis were performed. RESULTS: Approximately 21.6% of the cohort within the study who were anemic at preoperative clinic had a significantly increased median LOS of 2 days (p < .001) and an increased packed red cell transfusion rate compared with non-anemic patients (26.1% vs. 2.21%, p < 001). However, treatment of preoperative anemia did not show any significant difference in transfusion rates compared with patients who did not receive corrective treatment. The median LOS was higher by 1 day in the treated group compared with the nontreated cohort (p = .005). CONCLUSION: There is significant evidence to suggest that preoperative anemia can increase LOS and increase the risk of requiring postoperative blood transfusions. However, anemia should be regarded as a characteristic that can add to the outcome in a cumulative manner, as opposed to an isolated factor. Further research is needed on how to better manage preoperative anemia in order to improve patients' outcomes.

The burden of pre-operative anaemia and postoperative outcomes in 15 166 surgical patients from a public hospital in Brazil: A retrospective cohort study

Abstract:Background: Preoperative anaemia is associated with poor postoperative outcomes; however, few studies have reported its prevalence in developing countries and its association with significant postoperative outcomes. Objective: We aimed to identify the prevalence of anaemia and its association with postoperative outcomes in a major public hospital in Brazil. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Setting: Single-centre, 860-bed, quaternary university-affiliated teaching hospital in Southern Brazil. Patients: We included adult patients who had undergone surgery between 2015 and 2019. Main outcome measures: The main outcome was the in-hospital 30-day postoperative mortality. According to the World Health Organisation, we defined anaemia and its sub-classification (mild, moderate, and severe). We developed Poisson regression models to examine the association between preoperative anaemia and outcomes. Results: We included 15 166 patients, of whom 6387 (42.1%) were anaemic. After adjustment for confounding factors, patients with anaemia had an increased risk of in-hospital 30-day postoperative mortality (relative risk (RR) 1.69, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.44 to 1.99, P < 0.001). Mild [relative risk (RR) 1.38, 95% CI 1.12 to 1.71, P = 0.003], moderate (RR 1.73, 95% CI 1.43 to 2.10, P < 0.001), and severe anaemia (RR 2.43, 95% CI 1.92 to 3.07, P < 0.001) were associated with the primary outcome. Anaemia increased the transfusion risk (RR 4.44, 95% CI 3.90 to 5.06, P < 0.001) and postoperative intensive care unit (ICU) admission (RR 1.09, 95% CI 1.04 to 1.16, P = 0.001). Conclusions: Four out of 10 patients had anaemia. These patients had an increased risk of adverse postoperative outcomes. Comprehension of the magnitude and impact of anaemia is essential to establish interventions in low-resource scenarios to optimise the patient's journey. Iron deficiency and anaemia in bariatric surgical patients: causes, diagnosis and proper management

Abstract:Obesity-induced chronic inflammation leads to activation of the immune system that causes alterations of iron homeostasis including hypoferraemia, iron-restricted erythropoiesis, and finally mild-to-moderate anaemia. Thus, preoperative anaemia and iron deficiency are common among obese patients scheduled for bariatric surgery (BS). Assessment of patients should include a complete haematological and biochemical laboratory work-up, including measurement of iron stores, vitamin B12 and folate. In addition, gastrointestinal evaluation is recommended for most patients with iron-deficiency anaemia. On the other hand, BS is a long-lasting inflammatory stimulus in itself and entails a reduction of the gastric capacity and/or exclusion from the gastrointestinal tract which impair nutrients absorption, including dietary iron. Chronic gastrointestinal blood loss and iron-losingenteropathy may also contribute to iron deficiency after BS. Perioperative anaemia has been linked to increased postoperative morbidity and mortality and decreased quality of life after major surgery, whereas treatment of perioperative anaemia, and even haematinic deficiency without anaemia, has been shown to improve patient outcomes and quality of life. However, long-term follow-up data in regard to prevalence, severity, and causes of anaemia after BS are mostly absent. Iron supplements should be administered to patients after BS, but compliance with oral iron is no good. In addition, once iron deficiency has developed, it may prove refractory to oral treatment. In these situations, IV iron (which can circumvent the iron blockade at enterocytes and macrophages) has emerged as a safe and effective alternative for perioperative anaemia management. Monitoring should continue indefinitely even after the initial iron repletion and anaemia resolution, and maintenance IV iron treatment should be provided as required. New IV preparations, such ferric carboxymaltose, are safe, easy to use and up to 1000 mg can be given in a single session, thus providing an excellent tool to avoid or treat iron deficiency in this patient population.

Abstract:Background: The etiology of anemia has tremendous overlap with the disease states responsible for cognitive decline. We used data from a perioperative database of older adults undergoing elective surgery with anesthesia to (1) examine relationships among preoperative anemia blood markers, preoperative screeners of cognitive function, and chronic disease status; and (2) examine the relationship of these factors with operative outcomes. The primary goal of this study was to investigate the association between preoperative anemia blood markers and cognition measured by a preoperative cognitive screener. Secondary goals were to (1) examine the relationship between preoperative anemia blood markers and chronic disease states (ie, American Society of Anesthesiologists [ASA] and frailty), and (2) investigate the relationship of preoperative anemia blood markers and cognition with operative outcomes (ie, discharge disposition, 1-year mortality, number of surgical complications, length of hospital stay, and length of intensive care unit [ICU] stay). Methods: Data were collected at the University of Florida Health Shands Presurgical Center and the Perioperative Cognitive Anesthesia Network clinic within the electronic medical record. Patients 65 years of age or older were included if they had a preoperative hemoglobin (Hgb) value and a preoperative screening. Nonparametric methods were used for bivariate analysis. Logistic regression was used for the simultaneous examination of variables associated with nonhome discharge and 1-year mortality. Primary outcomes were discharge disposition and 1-year mortality. Secondary outcomes were number of surgical complications and length of hospital and ICU stay. Results: Of 14,795 patients cognitively assessed, 8643 met the inclusion criteria. Of these, 26.7% were anemic, with 16.8%, 9.5%, and 0.4% having mild, moderate, and severe anemia, respectively. The Spearman correlation coefficient [95% confidence interval, CI] between the Hgb level and the clock drawing time (CDT) was -.15 [-.17 to -.13] (P < .0001) indicating that a lower Hgb level was associated with cognitive vulnerability. Hgb was also negatively correlated with the ASA physical status classification, patient Fried Frailty Index, and hospital and ICU length of stay. In the multivariable model, age, surgical service, ASA and Fried Frailty Index significantly predicted nonhome discharge. Furthermore, age, surgical service, ASA, Fried Frailty Index, and Hgb independently predicted death within 1 year of surgery. The odds of death, adjusted for ASA, Fried Frailty, and covariates, were 2.7 times higher for those in the mild anemic group compared to those who were not anemic (odds ratio [OR], 2.7, 95% CI, [2.1-3.5]). The odds of death, adjusted for ASA, Fried Frailty, and covariates, were 3.6 times higher for those in the moderate/severe anemic group compared to those who were not anemic (OR, 3.6, 95% CI, [2.7-4.9]). Conclusions: In this first medicine study, we established relationships among anemia, preoperative markers of frailty and cognition, and chronic disease states in a large cohort of older patients undergoing elective surgery in a large tertiary medical center. We found that anemia, cognitive vulnerability, and chronic health disease states predicted death within 1 year of surgery, and that these preoperative factors negatively contribute to surgical outcomes such as time in the ICU, length of hospital stay, nonhome discharge, and 1-year mortality. The World Health Organization (WHO) and many academic medical societies have urged the adoption of patient blood management (PBM) disciplines, yet anemia is not routinely optimized as a preoperative risk factor. Given the well-defined association between preoperative anemia and postoperative morbidity and mortality, performing elective surgery on an untreated anemic patient should be considered substandard care. With established safe and effective treatment regimens, iron deficiency anemia is a modifiable preoperative risk factor that should be addressed before elective surgery.

Abstract:Pulmonary complications are very common after noncardiac surgery and can be easily overlooked. If not properly screened for or evaluated these can in many instances lead to postoperative respiratory failure or even death. Decisions regarding ambulatory versus inpatient surgery, modality of anesthesia, protective ventilation and method of weaning, type of analgesia, and postoperative monitoring can be crucial to avoid such complications.

Abstract:Abstract Background Preoperative anemia is a common hematologic problem in major orthopedic surgery in developing countries. It is a condition in which the number and size of red blood cells are insufficient to meet the body’s physiologic needs, consequently impairing the capacity of the blood to transport oxygen to the body. Preoperative anemia is common in elective orthopedic surgical patients and is an independent risk factor for perioperative morbidity and mortality. This study aimed to assess preoperative anemia prevalence and risk factors in patients undergoing elective orthopedic procedures. Method A multicenter prospective observational cohort study was conducted from June 01 to August 30, 2022. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select the study unit. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were expressed in percentages and presented with tables and figures. Binary logistic regression was used to see the association between independent and dependent variables. A P-value < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Result Preoperative anemia’s prevalence and risk factors in patients undergoing elective orthopedic procedures was 24.1[95%CI= (18.2–30.6)]. Multivariable logistic analyses showed that low monthly income level [AOR:5,95%CI:(1.36–7.98)], patient with cancer [AOR:3.4,95%CI:(3.7–8.84)], patient with malaria infectious [AOR: 3.2,95%CI:( 1.13–8.91)], patient with anti-retroviral therapy [AOR: 5.2,95%CI:( 1.8-11.04)], and previous history of surgery [AOR:1,95%CI(1.43–2.4)], were factors significantly associated with preoperative anemia. Conclusion The prevalence of preoperative anemia among adult patients who underwent elective orthopedics procedures was high. Low Monthly income, patients with cancer, patient with malaria infection, and patients with anti-retroviral therapy, previous histories of surgery were found significantly associated with preoperative anemia. So, we recommend to health professional’s early identification, diagnosis and treatment of preoperative anemia should be done to reduce the risks of anemia and related adverse outcomes.

Abstract:Anemia often occurs in patients undergoing cardiac surgery, which increases the incidence and related risks of blood transfusion together with surgical bleeding.Both anemia and transfusion were associated with poor prognosis and increased mortality.Current practice guidelines generally recommend the implementation of patient blood management (PBM), which relies on anemia management and restrictive transfusion to reduce perioperative blood loss and transfusion rate, and improve the prognosis of patients.This article reviews recent research progress of anemia management and blood transfusion in adult patients undergoing cardiac surgery, in order to provide basis for the practice of PBM in cardiac surgery patients in the future.

Abstract:Pregnancy-related deaths in four published perioperative mortality review reports were analysed. The aim is to look at the quality of surgical and anaesthetic services along with the perioperative care provided. The audit identified shortfalls in the logistic and support services and recommended remedial strategies. The review was conducted by a committee consisting of practising anaesthetists, surgeons and obstetricians who analysed the questionnaires collectively. A consensus was reached to categorise the death. There were 280 pregnancy-related deaths. Post-partum haemorrhage accounted for 31.8%, followed by hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (20.0% obstetric embolism (16.1%), sepsis (10.7%) and associated medical conditions (21.4%). In brief, there were comings in preoperative, intra-operative and post-operative care in some of the cases. Increased consultant input, clinical audit, improvements in monitoring and expansion of critical care facilities were the integral issues recommended.

Abstract:See Article, page 725 Preoperative anemia is associated with adverse outcomes after cardiac surgery, including acute kidney injury (AKI), increased hospital lengths of stay, and perioperative red blood cell (RBC) transfusion. 1 , 2 There are several mechanisms by which preoperative anemia may predispose patients to perioperative organ injuries such as AKI, including impaired oxygen delivery and subsequent anemia-induced tissue ischemia, alterations in iron homeostasis in those with absolute or functional iron deficiency, and inflammation-induced injury secondary to elevations in proinflammatory cytokines in anemias of inflammation, which may be exacerbated by the inflammatory insult of cardiopulmonary bypass. Further, preoperative anemia is often accompanied by chronic illness and may therefore serve as a marker for predisposition for perioperative organ dysfunction. 3 Finally, preoperative anemia is a leading risk factor for perioperative RBC transfusion, which in turn is associated with adverse clinical outcomes. 2 , 4–7 To this end, the management of preoperative anemia before cardiac surgery has been shown to decrease transfusion exposures, 8 , 9 which in turn may have favorable effects on postoperative outcomes.

Peri-operative management of diabetes mellitus - A survey of current practices among Indian anesthesiologists

Abstract:Background and aims: Increased burden of diabetes in India has resulted in a spurt in the number of patients with diabetes posted for surgeries. The paucity of national guidelines can lead to marked practice variations in the peri-operative management of diabetes. This survey intends to discern current peri-operative practices among anesthesiologists working in medical colleges, tertiary care government, and private health care institutes of the country. Material and methods: An anonymous online survey comprising of 25 closed-ended questions was conducted using Google Forms® and disseminated through social media, emails, and messaging platforms. The questionnaire dealt primarily with the peri-operative management of diabetes in patients scheduled for elective surgery. The survey was conducted over a period of 1 month and targeted anesthesia resident trainees with more than 1-year experience, senior residents, and consultants working in India. Results: Statistically significant difference was observed between the three types of health facilities with respect to prior evaluation for diabetes (P = 0.007), prioritizing operative list (P = 0.006), hospital encouragement of day care surgery (P < 0.001), glycated hemoglobin level (HbA1c) level >8.5 for postponement of surgery (P < 0.05), insulin infusion preference (P < 0.001), hourly intra-operatively capillary blood glucose (CBG) assessment (P = 0.021), and avoiding peri-operative use of Ringer's lactate (RL) (P = 0.025). Conclusion: This survey primarily highlights the lack of prioritizing the operative list, early discontinuation of metformin, and reduced tendency to consider diabetics for day care surgeries.
A Perioperative Blood Management Algorithm Aimed at Conservation of Platelets in Clinical Practice: The Role of the Anesthesiologist in Decision-Making

Abstract:Platelet dysfunction and thrombocytopenia are associated with postoperative morbidity not only from modifiable preoperative factors but also from a lack of local patient blood management algorithms. In this regard, platelet transfusions have risen after the COVID-19 pandemic. Simultaneously, there has been a shortage of donors. It is logical, therefore, that each hospital should develop a triage tool, posting their algorithm on walls. Anesthesiologists should assist in planning a strategy to minimize blood transfusions while improving tissue oxygenation. A flowchart posted in each operating theatre may be customized per patient and hospital. Clinicians need reminders to draw a prothrombin time, fibrinogen, complete blood count every hour, and the appropriate threshold to transfuse. In summary, anesthesiologists are often unable to have a discussion with a patient until the preoperative day; thus, the onus falls on our surgical colleagues to reduce risk factors for coagulopathy or to delay surgery until after proper consultants have optimized a patient. The most important problems that an individual patient has ideally should be listed in a column where an anesthesiologist can write a timeline of key steps across a row, corresponding to each problem. If a handoff in the middle of the case is required, this handoff tool is superior to simply checking a box on an electronic medical record. In summary, in the operating suite, an anesthesiologist should emphasize the importance of a multidisciplinary approach. Continuing education, regular stakeholder meetings, and posters can assist in reinforcing algorithms in clinical practice.
Intraoperative Monitoring of the Obese Patient Undergoing Surgery: A Narrative Review

Abstract:With the increasing prevalence of obesity in the population, anaesthetists must confidently manage both the pathophysiological and technical challenges presented in bariatric and non-bariatric surgery. The intraoperative period represents an important opportunity to optimise and mitigate risk. However, there is little formal guidance on what intraoperative monitoring techniques should be used in this population. This narrative review collates the existing evidence for intraoperative monitoring devices in the obese patients. Although a number of non-invasive blood pressure monitors have been tested, an invasive arterial line remains the most reliable monitor if accurate, continuous monitoring is required. Goal-directed fluid therapy is recommended by clinical practice guidelines, but the methods tested to assess this had guarded applicability to the obese population. Transcutaneous carbon dioxide (CO2) monitoring may offer additional benefit to standard capnography in this population. Individually titrated positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) and recruitment manoeuvres improved intraoperative mechanics but yielded no benefit in the immediate postoperative period. Depth of anaesthesia monitoring appears to be beneficial in the perioperative period regarding recovery times and complications. Objective confirmation of reversal of neuromuscular blockade continues to be a central tenet of anaesthesia practice, particularly relevant to this group who have been characterised as an "at risk" extubation group. Where deep neuromuscular blockade is used, continuous neuromuscular blockade is suggested. Both obesity and the intraoperative context represent somewhat unstable search terms, as the clinical implications of the obesity phenotype are not uniform, and the type and urgency of surgery have significant impact on the intraoperative setting. This renders the generation of summary conclusions around what intraoperative monitoring techniques are suitable in this population highly challenging.
