Abstract:Owing to the toxicity and bioaccumulation of U(VI), it is critical to develop efficient and sustainable materials for U(VI) removal. In this study, Fe-Cu nanoparticles anchored on corn straw biochar (Fe-Cu/MBC) with different Fe-Cu ratios were prepared by liquid-phase reduction method to achieve low aggregation, superior reactivity and removal capacity. The optimal Cu/Fe mass ratio was 0.0555. The results of scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed that Fe-Cu/MBC exhibited good dispersibility. The effects including the doping amount of Cu, the initial concentration of U(VI), the dosage of Fe-Cu/MBC, coexisting ions, reaction time, temperature and initial pH on the removal efficiency were investigated. The removal rate of U(VI) by Fe-Cu/MBC was not affected by the presence of coexisting ions (Ca 2+ 、Mg 2+ 、CO 3 2- 、Cl - 、NO 3 - and SO 4 2- ). Therefore, Fe-Cu/MBC still has strong applicability for U(VI) in complex water. The Fe-Cu/MBC exhibited great superiority of U(VI) removal compared with Fe/MBC. Further studies showed that when the initial concentration of U(VI) was 23.8 mg/L and pH=6, 95% and 66% of U(VI) could be removed by Fe-Cu/MBC and Fe/MBC after 12 h reaction, respectively. Fe-Cu/MBC could significantly enhance the removal rate due to a small amount of copper improving the reducing ability of the material. X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that the reduction of U(VI) was accompanied by adsorption and co-deposition. These results suggest that Fe-Cu/MBC can be a hopeful alternative for the removal of U(VI) pollution due to its low-cost, high removal rate and easy availability.
