Abstract:Based on classic and cutting-edge research, this textbook shows how grammatical phenomena can best be taught to second language and bilingual learners. Bringing together second language research, linguistics, pedagogical grammar, and language teaching, it demonstrates how linguistic theory and second language acquisition findings optimize classroom intervention research. The book assumes a generative approach but covers intervention studies from a variety of theoretical perspectives. Each chapter describes relevant linguistic structures, discusses core challenges, summarizes research findings, and concludes with classroom and lab-based intervention studies. The authors provide tools to help to design linguistically informed intervention studies, including discussion questions, application questions, case studies, and sample interventions. Online resources feature lecture slides and intervention materials, with data analysis exercises, ensuring the content is clear and ready to use. Requiring no more than a basic course in linguistics, the material serves advanced undergraduates and first-year graduate students studying applied linguistics, education, or language teaching.

Exploring Sociocultural Theory Application in Online Language Courses

Abstract:Second language education is a necessary admission requirement for many universities across the U.S., as well as a graduation requirement for several high schools. The increasing presence of online education has increased the availability of secondary and post-secondary world language courses in online and blended formats, yet a challenge associated with online language coursework lies in addressing the sociocultural aspect of learning a language. In this type of learning format, it is critical to consider Sociocultural Theory (SCT) concepts such as self-regulation, zone of proximal development (ZPD), and scaffolding. For instance, Zhang (2013) explores teacher-student collaboration in online courses; and Cappellini (2016) has researched scaffolding and the role students assume in the learner community when learning via telecollaboration.The SCT theoretical framework guided Brigham Young University in developing blended and fully online German courses. The courses use authentic cultural materials, unique technological resources, and social-media-style interventions (synchronous and asynchronous) to provide extensive scaffolding of learning material and a collaborative student environment. SCT-based interventions in the online courses included sentence modeling, use of discussion boards, film recitations, and conversation cafe (an online real-time speaking lab). This paper reports on the approach the university took to the course development, the sociocultural aspects of the interventions implemented, and preliminary evaluative findings regarding the effectiveness of the interventions. Preliminary findings suggest a slight improvement of student proficiency, as demonstrated in German 201 final exam scores and German 202 pre-test scores; however further research and analysis is necessary to validate these preliminary findings.

Abstract:Educational policies that impact second language (L2) learners—a rapidly-growing group—are often enacted without consulting relevant research. This review synthesized research regarding optimal conditions for L2 acquisition, facilitative L2 learner and teacher characteristics, and speed of L2 acquisition, from four bodies of work—foreign language education, child language research, sociocultural studies, and psycholinguistics—often overlooked by educators. Seventy-one peer-reviewed journal articles studying PK-12 L2 learners met inclusion criteria. Findings included: 1) Optimal conditions for L2 learners immersed in a majority-L2 society include strong home literacy practices, opportunities to use the L2 informally, well-implemented specially-designed L2 educational programs, and sufficient time devoted to L2 literacy instruction, whereas L2 learners with little L2 exposure require explicit instruction to master grammar; 2) L2 learners with strong L2 aptitude, motivation, and first language (L1) skills are more successful; 3) Effective L2 teachers demonstrate sufficient L2 proficiency, strong instructional skills, and proficiency in their students’ L1; 4) L2 learners require 3-7 years to reach L2 proficiency, with younger learners typically taking longer but more likely to achieve close-to-native results. These findings, even those most relevant to education, are not reflected in current US policy. Additional research is needed on the characteristics of successful or unsuccessful L2 learners and L2 teachers. Such research should attend systematically to the differences between L2 learning in maximal versus minimal input settings; whereas the psycholinguistic challenges of L2 learning might be common across settings, the sociocultural and interactional challenges and opportunities differ in ways that can massively impact outcomes.

Abstract:This paper presents a systematic review of second language acquisition (SLA) theories and how these theories and ideas could contribute to language teaching. It briefly presents SLA theories related to most language teaching approaches, such as behaviorism, interactionism, sociocultural, and comprehension theory. Then it examines some errors and non-systematic errors and how they affect language learning, as well as how to provide learners with the best kind of feedback on different language skills. It also presents first language interference and its positive or negative influence on acquiring the target language. The paper then discusses the comprehensible input in SLA, the role of interactive communication and social interaction in SLA, and how they could improve learners’ linguistics competence. Furthermore, it presents the difference between language learning and language acquisition and what could be done to help improve the learning process. Finally, it discusses the differences between foreign language learning and second language learning and how that could affect SLA refereeing to some skills and aspects that would help learners to use language appropriately.

Abstract:Second Language Acquisition (SLA) knowledge is necessary in order to increase the likelihood that teachers will engage in sound practices. The purpose of this study was to discursively examine the evolving SLA knowledge as part of living educational theories in course assignments of 29 teachers in an SLA theory class. This study offers several valuable additional insights about teachers living educational theories of SLA. Specifically, preservice teachers exhibited more willingness to change their practice in the future than inservice teachers, yet preservice teachers still expressed both a confirmation of original beliefs and personal validation for extant beliefs.

Abstract:This article begins by situating modern‐day second language acquisition (SLA) research in a historical context, tracing its evolution from cognitive to social to sociocognitive accounts. Next, the influence of the zeitgeist is considered. In this era of rapid change and turmoil, there are both perils and opportunities afforded by globalization. In addition, what globalization is bringing to the forefront is a need to grapple with the complexity of the world. It follows then that we need to think differently about SLA. I suggest that this thinking take two directions. The first is that the researchers in the field adopt an ecological perspective, whereby the relations among factors are what is key to elucidating the complexity. I offer as an example overcoming the bifurcation between research on individual differences and research on the SLA process. Doing so ushers in a person‐centered, humanistic dimension of SLA. A second, related change is the renewed awareness of the importance of context and of the nature of constraints that shape any particular context. Language learning does not occur in an ideological vacuum but rather is affected in a serious way by prevailing beliefs in the society at large. I therefore make the case for language researchers to be more mindful of the social injustices that exist in the world concerning language learning and use, and I indicate several of the ideologies and myths that deserve to be challenged accordingly. Before concluding, I discuss the implications of these two changes for issues of language assessment, research, and teaching. How can the field of second language acquisition/development help learners to cope with the complexity and dynamism of the world we live in? An ecological approach that is considerate of the learning context and learners’ individual differences and that teaches them to adapt and make use of access‐creating affordances offers a logical choice.

Abstract:Purpose Drawing on diverse findings in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and Language Teaching research, but centering on the unique needs and contexts of international students in post-secondary education, this paper aims to develop a working theory of international students' continued language development. Design/methodology/approach As a critical review, the paper focuses on the most relevant concepts that have important bearings on the research topic, such as attitude, motivation and willingness to communicate; the age and biological factor, namely, the critical period for SLA; the learning environment and methodological factors, such as the input hypothesis; and finally, the larger sociocultural factor, i.e. Bronfenbrenner's Ecological Systems Theory of student development. Findings This paper has developed a comprehensive theory of second language development for international students by synthesizing all relevant research findings in SLA and language teaching research. Research limitations/implications Linguistic factors, i.e. how students' different first languages impact their pace and difficulty in learning a second language, though important, are not included in this paper. Practical implications The paper can better inform international students, faculty members, support staff and even members of the larger community about the attributions, the processes and the possible outcomes of second language development for international students. Originality/value Second language development is an immensely important part of international students' international education journey. But currently, there is no comprehensive and coherent understanding of this issue among stakeholders of international student success.

Abstract:Language is crucial for adapting to society, and learning different languages enhances human efficiency. Learning a second language involves acquiring any language in addition to one's native language. Second Language Acquisition (SLA) has two meanings, generally, it describes the process of learning a second language, and more specifically, it refers to the theory of how a second language is acquired or picked up. Second language learning demands considerable effort and practice. Stephen Krashen, a prominent linguist, has conducted extensive research on non- English and bilingual language acquisition. Krashen's theory of second language learning is founded on five major hypotheses, the Acquisition-Learning Hypothesis, the Natural Order Hypothesis, the Monitor Hypothesis, the Input Hypothesis, and the Affective Filter Hypothesis. Given its broad scope and significant impact on language teaching approaches, Krashen's Second Language Acquisition theory is better described as a theory rather than merely a hypothesis. However, like all scientific theories, it continues to be refined and debated in scholarly circles. This article explores Krashen's theories of Second Language Acquisition and provides justifications for referring to them as theories.

Abstract:Recent concern with bilingual education has led to an increased interest in understanding the process of second-language acquisition. In this article Kenji Hakuta and Herlinda Cancino present a critical, historical overview of research on second–language acquisition. In this account the authors outline four analytical approaches—contrastive, error, performance, and discourse analysis—trace the shifts among these approaches, and demonstrate the advantages and disadvantages of each. They also show how the different approaches reflect changing conceptions of language and the nature of learners. The authors give special emphasis to the influence of first-language-acquisition research on studies of second-language acquisition,and they speculate on future research trends.

Abstract:"Context" has been increasingly featured and acknowledged in second language (L2) research because L2 teaching is recognised to be shaped by the environments in which it is situated. Numerous theoretical perspectives were introduced to L2 research that aim to capture the contextual forces at work in teaching and learning, including but not limited to Activity Theory, Complexity Theory, and Sociocultural Theory. Activity Theory holds that a learner's motives (human needs directed towards an object) are highly malleable, subject to the influence of such contextual variables as institutional rules, community, tools and artefacts available (see Leont'ev, 1978, 1981 who popularised Activity Theory from Sergei Rubenstein's founding and also Engeström's more current work in 1999). Complexity Theory, which has been widely adopted in both physical and social sciences, originates from physics (Martin et al., 2019). Complexity Theory was later introduced into L2 research by Diane Larsen-Freeman who posits that language learning is not only a process but a volatile and emerging system that is shaped by components of the system (e.g., learners, teachers, schools) engaging in constant and vibrant interactions (Larsen-Freeman, 2014). Sociocultural Theory highlights the sociocultural contexts where learning takes place (Lantolf, 2000; Vygotsky, 1978). Informed by a social constructivist view of learning, key concepts such as scaffolding (e.g., teachers' support for learners) are put forward. In particular, Vygotsky argues that communication plays an indispensable role in language learning. Extrapolating Vygotsky's work to L2 research, Swain (2006) claims that languaging, dialogues among learners to discuss issues in L2 learning, is an important process of learning a L2.

Linguistic Relativity Unveiled: An Exploration of Language and Cognition in Second Language Acquisition

Abstract:In an era of rapid globalization, cultural exchange promotes a multilingual environment, thereby increasing exposure to different linguistic frameworks. This paper takes Chinese students with second language acquisition as the research object and tries to explore whether they are affected by psychological factors and environmental factors in the process of thinking and communication in their mother tongue or non-mother tongue. Based on the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, which holds that language shapes thinking, the study investigates the cognitive linguistic challenges posed by the diversity between Chinese and Western languages and the cultural specificity behind different languages for Chinese students studying abroad. Eight in-depth interviews were conducted with Chinese students who have studied and lived abroad to gain a nuanced understanding of their language background, learning process and experiences in different language environments. Qualitative textual analysis of these interviews revealed the profound impact of cultural and thinking differences on the language difficulties encountered by participants. This study also explores the psychological factors that influence the choice of thought and expression language in the second language environment. The results show that context, common language with communication partners and cultural differences play a key role in language selection among Chinese students. In addition, the study explored the feasibility of how different languages might be better suited to express specific concepts or emotions.

Abstract:Thirty years ago, Dell Hymes (1972) observed that knowing what goes on outside the school setting is necessary to understanding what goes on inside. He noted further that “the key to understanding language in context is to start not with language but with context … [and then to] systematically relate the two” (pp. xix–lvii). Recently, the importance of learning context has stirred debate within SLA circles, and two coexisting lines of research have contributed to the overall picture that researchers and pedagogues have on SLA. On the one hand, scholars such as Long (1997) contended that it is important to provide an understanding of the acquisition process in psycholinguistic terms relatively independent of external factors (e.g., sociolinguistic variables or the particular methodology employed in a classroom). Researchers such as Firth and Wagner (1997) contended that the best predictive models of SLA consider the interaction of social activity and psycholinguistic elements.

Abstract:Theories of second language acquisition (SLA) play an important role in second language (L2) learning. These theories can help both language teachers and their students to understand L2 language learning process. There are various theories and approaches of SLA which try to explain how L2 learning takes place. Each theory accounts for L2 acquisition from a different perspective. This paper describes and compares five theories of L2 acquisition: Contrastive Analysis (CA), Error Analysis (EA), Markedness Theory, Universal Grammar (UG) and Monitor Theory, explains their contributions to L2 learning and shows the criticism of each theory. First, in Contrastive Analysis, the weak and strong hypotheses and types of language transfer are explained. Second, in Error Analysis, attitudes towards errors and aims, process and models of Error Analysis are described. Third, in Markedness Theory, the role of typological markedness in the explanation of L2 learning, the Markedness Differential Hypothesis (MDH) and the Structural Conformity Hypothesis (SCH) are explained. Fourth, in Universal Grammar, it is shown that L2 acquisition occurs on the basis of first language (L1) acquisition: L2 acquisition is a matter of setting the correct L2 parameters. The Language Acquisition Device (LAD) and L2 access to UG are explained. Finally, in Monitor Theory, it is suggested that comprehensible input is crucial for L2 acquisition and the five hypotheses of the theory are explained: (a) The Input Hypothesis, (b) The Learning-Acquisition Hypothesis, (c) The Monitor Hypothesis, (d) The Natural Order Hypothesis and (e) The Affective Filter Hypothesis.

Abstract:Empirical and theoretical research on language has recently experienced a period of extensive growth. Unfortunately, however, in the case of the Japanese language, far fewer studies—particularly those written in English—have been presented on adult second language (L2) learners and bilingual children. As the field develops, it is increasingly important to integrate theoretical concepts and empirical research findings in second language acquisition (SLA) of Japanese, so that the concepts and research can be eventually applied to educational practice. This article attempts to: (a) address at least some of the gaps currently existing in the literature, (b) deal with important topics to the extent possible, and (c) discuss various problems with regard to adult learners of Japanese as an L2 and English–Japanese bilingual children. Specifically, the article first examines the characteristics of the Japanese language. Tracing the history of SLA studies, this article then deliberately touches on a wide spectrum of domains of linguistic knowledge (e.g., phonology and phonetics, morphology, lexicon, semantics, syntax, discourse), context of language use (e.g., interactive conversation, narrative), research orientations (e.g., formal linguistics, psycholinguistics, social psychology, sociolinguistics), and age groups (e.g., children, adults). Finally, by connecting past SLA research findings in English and recent/present concerns in Japanese as SLA with a focus on the past 10 years including corpus linguistics, this article provides the reader with an overview of the field of Japanese linguistics and its critical issues.

Abstract:Many theorists have pointed out that in real world communication, the usage of a language is always colored by a cultural norm so that the language used in communication can be understood by the majority of a cultural community or society. The relationship between language usage and cultural norms or pragmatic rules can never be broken in communication. In cross-cultural communication, the differences in pragmatic rules, communicative strategies, cross-cultural psychology among other may become problematic areas in learning a second or foreign language. Consequently, making the differences known to both learners and teachers is of paramount importance in teaching and learning a second or foreign language. By addressing and discussing some cultural-specific factors in teaching and learning a second or foreign language, this thesis aims to provide useful learning factors in which learners frame meaning in a second or foreign language and thus emphasize the importance of teaching culture to second or foreign language learners, it also tentatively provide some instructional strategies for teaching culture in second or foreign language acquisition (SLA/FLA) classroom.

Abstract:A well-known, long-standing and heated debate across the literature concerning applied linguistics is whether within the classroom teachers are dealing with second language acquisition or second language learning. This controversial issue is especially relevant for contexts where English is learned as an English as an Additional Language (EAL) as in Portugal. This is particulalry important at a national level, where English is currently taught as a compulsory subject across primary education, with minimal input.However, the English language curriculum, its pedagogy, and assessment are not anchored on Content for Language and Integrated Learning (CLIL) principles, hence resorting mainly to the students’ mother tongue. As we move towards identifying and synthesizing best pedagogical practices for Teaching English to Young Learners, it is key that we seek a deep understanding of the most effective teaching strategies to foster second language acquisition. As the matter of fact, second language acquisition and overall literacy development have long been considered key to young learners of English, as a strong and solid primary education is critical to ensuring their long-term academic success (Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998). Nonetheless, one major issue concerning primary English langauae teaching is the overwhelming lack of CPD opportunities and research-informed teaching, thus resulting in English language teachers’ unsufficient pedagogical preparation, leading in turn to students’ disengagement within the second language learning process.Therefore, this paper seeks to explore whether exposure to English-only language lessons, through cross-curricular work sets a viable and solid path for second language acquisition in contexts where it is commonly believed that it is only possible to learn English as a set of isolated words.As methodology for the present study there was resort to children’s literature, language games and to an English-only classroom environment to simulate a bilingual education classroom. Within storytelling and cross-curricular work, key vocabulary was taught, hence working the language both at word and sentence level.The findings, based in students’ samples of work, do illustrate pedagogical practices which demonstrate successful second language acquisition, namely morpheme order acquisition, even with minimal exposure to the target language.

Abstract:This research aims to understand the concept of second language acquisition theory according to Krashen and provide information about criticisms of Krashen's theory of second language acquisition. This research method employs a qualitative approach to delve into the concept of second language acquisition theory according to Krashen and criticisms thereof. The subjects of the study include literature sources encompassing theories of second language acquisition, works by Krashen, critical research on his theories, as well as insights from experts and practitioners. Data collection techniques involve literature analysis and expert interviews. Data will be thematically analyzed, involving steps such as identifying key concepts, reviewing criticisms, identifying components, analyzing main hypotheses, and searching for patterns in the data. The goal is to provide an in-depth understanding of Krashen's theory and its implications in second language education. The research findings indicate that Krashen's Theory of Second Language Acquisition consists of five main components that form five primary hypotheses. Firstly, the Acquisition-Learning hypothesis distinguishes between the acquisition and learning systems in understanding language acquisition. Secondly, the Natural Order hypothesis states that children acquire grammar structures in a natural order. Thirdly, the Monitor hypothesis explains the relationship between acquisition and learning and their influence on each other. Fourthly, the Input hypothesis emphasizes the importance of comprehensible input for language acquisition. Lastly, the Affective Filter hypothesis highlights the role of attitude towards language speakers in the second language acquisition process. However, there are several criticisms of these hypotheses. Firstly, the Acquisition-Learning hypothesis is questioned for its lack of evidence-based support. Secondly, the Natural Order hypothesis is criticized for neglecting the significant influence of the first language on second language acquisition. Thirdly, criticisms of the Monitor hypothesis include the impossibility of proving the role of the learning system as a monitor. Fourthly, the Input hypothesis faces criticism due to the lack of a clear definition of comprehensible input. Lastly, the Affective Filter hypothesis fails to address questions about the role of affect in individual variations in second language acquisition.
Developing L2 Intercultural Competence in an Online Context through Didactic Audiovisual Translation

Abstract:Developing intercultural competence is one of the most important aspects when mastering a second language (L2, henceforth). This can be achieved through different approaches, but this paper focuses on the possibility of acquiring this skill online through the use of Didactic Audiovisual Translation (DAT). Here, we present the findings of the TRADILEX Project, which has produced data that support the ability of DAT to encourage motivation in learners while they develop integrated L2 skills in general and intercultural competence in particular through a combination of intrinsic and explicit cultural components presented in different lesson plans.

Abstract:The process of acquiring a second language is a complex undertaking that necessitates a multifaceted approach to instruction. Contemporary pedagogical strategies have increasingly emphasized interactive and communicative methods, recognizing the importance of engaging learners in meaningful and authentic use of the language. This article delves into the various instructional techniques that are currently favored in the field of second language education. Notably, the comprehensibility of input, which refers to the accessibility of language presented to learners, is paramount; methods designed to ensure that learners can understand and process language are essential for facilitating acquisition. Moreover, the aspect of learner interaction is scrutinized, as it is critical for providing L2 students with the opportunity to practice and develop their language skills in social contexts. Feedback mechanisms play an instrumental role in L2 learning, serving as a bridge between understanding and production, helping learners to refine their language use through correction and guidance. Task-based learning is another significant pedagogical approach that warrants discussion. It focuses on the completion of meaningful tasks that mirror real-world language use, rather than on the rote memorization of language forms. Furthermore, the integration of technology in language learning environments has opened up new and dynamic avenues for enhancing learners' engagement and exposure to the target language. The article weighs the efficacy of these diverse strategies by reviewing empirical studies and theoretical perspectives that underline their benefits in promoting second language proficiency. The conclusion weaves together the significant insights from the analysis, reflecting on the practical implications these strategies hold for learners and educators alike. It also calls for further research to optimize L2 teaching methodologies, thereby enriching our understanding of second language acquisition in the digital age.
