Abstract:In cities with a "ring+radiations" road network structure, a three Branch intersection is formed at the connection between the inner ring and radiations. Common three branch interchanges include T-shaped, Y-shaped, trumpet shaped, leaf shaped, pear shaped interchanges, etc. Shenyang City plans a "two verticals and three horizontals+four rings+seventeen radiations" urban expressway network. This article takes the three-branch intersection formed by Chongshan Road, Tawan Street, and Yuanjiang Street in Shenyang City as an example to analyze its traffic characteristics and predict traffic demand. Based on this, three interchange selection schemes are proposed, and recommended schemes are obtained through multi angle comparison. This article provides ideas for the selection of three branch interchanges. In addition, because this project is located in the built-up area and the surrounding land is tight, this article also explores the problems and solutions of the overpass renovation in the built-up area, providing reference for similar projects.

Abstract:With rapid urbanization all over the world, the traffic congestion problem is becoming increasing severe. In particular, many metropolitan areas suffer from the problem of network gridlock in peak hours, which is mainly attributed to the limited street space as well as inefficient intersection signal control to cope the excessive demand. In light of this, in this paper we propose a model to describe the risk of gridlock on a network and develop an intersection control strategy to mitigate such risk. The intersection control is formulated within a decentralized agent-based framework, casting it as a dynamic portfolio management problem. Some properties of the proposed control strategy are discussed, along with numerical experiments demonstrating the performance on a grid network.

Abstract:Regarding the exclusive characteristics of mixed traffic in China, this paper offers some ideas to design scenarios for mixed urban traffic control after analyzing the characteristics of urban networks and traffic flow. Based on mix-flow theories, the paper establishes a system, namely HiCON, of urban mixed traffic control, including ramp metering, single-point control, coordinated arterial and regional control, and transit priority control. Implementations of HiCON in Beijing, Qingdao, and Fuzhou, respectively, have shown promising results: 10-20% reduction of delay, and 5-10% reduction of travel time, both for vehicles and in average.

Abstract:One of the most critical problems of urban areas is the increasing transportation demand. Traffic that exists on urban streets is aggravating other problems, such as environmental pollution, unrestrained energy consumption, and increased traffic accidents. In China, urban passenger movement is composed primarily of buses for public transportation and bicycles for private transportation. Bicycles are a primary transportation mode in most cities and will continue to play an important role in the future. The mix, though, of bus vehicle and bicycle operation on city streets is the largest contributor to urban traffic congestion. To lessen congestion, the authors propose an improved signal system for urban roads to make the most effective use of the network. Characteristics of bicycle traffic in Beijing are studied and the influence of bicycle traffic on traffic control is analyzed. A traffic survey is conducted for a typical signalized intersection, and an actual situation of bicycle flow passing through a signalized intersection is studied. In addition, influence factors having to do with traffic control design are demonstrated and alternative traffic control planning is discussed.

Abstract:Urban large-scale traffic congestion is often formed from the individual intersection's traffic jam. According to the characteristics of these intersections, this paper presents the conception of traffic bottleneck. To prevent bottleneck intersection's queuing back,this paper analysis bottleneck control strategy and its trigger conditions, and presents traffic bottleneck control strategy in single and coordination situation,then conceives single bottleneck control model and coordination bottleneck control model. At last, we prove the control effect of single bottleneck control model in practice. © 2009 IEEE.

Abstract:Mixed motor vehicle and bicycle traffic is increasingly common in urban transport. Multi-phase crossings for left-turning bicycles are proposed for highly populated intersections to reduce conflict and improve safety. The objective of this research was to study the potential impact of applying multi-phase crossings for left-turning bicycles on the efficiencies of signalised intersections by means of microscopic simulation. Based on research on the behaviour of motor vehicle drivers and cyclists, a microscopic simulation model was upgraded to consider mixed traffic comprising motor vehicles and bicycles in urban networks. The model was validated with data collected from the road network in Beijing, China. The simulation results show that bicycle multi-phase crossings with proper signal operations can reduce bicycle delays dramatically with only a minor effect on vehicle delay, and can reduce the number of vehicle stops.

Abstract:Traffic congestion on urban roads is forcing city authorities to look at innovative transportation solutions. Traffic simulation and other advanced technologies have been used to provide solutions for maximizing the capacity of urban transportation networks and to evaluate and optimize traffic management and signal settings. The authors have investigated about 10 urban signalized intersections to evaluate the adopted traffic organization and signal settings in Beijing. One of these intersections was taken as example to illustrate how to assess the effectiveness of ameliorative measures using the microscopic simulation model.

Abstract:A novel general multi-phase signal control method was presented based on the idea of object-(oriented) design to increase the efficiency of intersection signal control.A general single intersection model was built up to adjust the phase number and traffic flow in time based on the distributing information of traffic flow for current intersection.Aimed at minimum vehicle time delay,the intersection signal phase and the green light time were optimized respectively with fuzzy control technologies.Comparison of result of simulation with application data with that of an actual signal control method show that this new signal control scheme can make the traffic flow balanced and reduce the average vehicle time delay.

Abstract:By taking Beijing urban expressway as research object,the coordination control strategy between the close on-ramp and off-ramp was studied.In order to reduce the conflicts between the traffic streams of entering and exiting and to ensure the optimal traffic state of the mainline,the on-ramp and off-ramp signal coordination control method was proposed.The method was simulated by VISSIM.The result shows that it can improve the vehicles average speed of the mainline and effectively reduce the conflicts at weaving area.

Abstract:Chinese traffic is typically composed of bicycles and motor vehicles on the same road. The efficiency of bicycle traffic in time and space at intersections was investigated for eight typical intersections in the cities of Tianjin, Shenyang, and Changchun, all in China, by means of video recording. Models were developed to calculate the through bicycle traffic and the left-turn bicycle traffic conversion factors in intersections where bicycles and motor vehicles share the same road. The results indicate that the through bicycle conversion factor is 0.28 and the left-turn bicycle conversion factor is 0.33. This conclusion differs from the current value used in China. More research on the conversion factor is necessary to evaluate the impact of intersections.

Abstract:This paper presented the method of determining critical traffic volume for installing traffic signal based on actual traffic situation in China. Considering the condition that all approach traffic streams have equal right to pass through at some special unsignalized intersections, the model of Motorcade Analysis Method was improved by introducing the lost time of saturated discharging, and then the model of vehicles average delay under equal weight condition was proposed applying the probability and queuing theory. Furthermore, by comparing the average vehicle delay before and after signal control and choosing the lower one as the optimal control pattern, the critical volume curve of installing traffic signal for cross pattern 2/2 were presented. This research may provide a new theory reference in the progress of installing traffic signal.

Abstract:In traffic management, the stop lines of exclusive left-turn lanes are moved forward and waiting areas for left-turn vehicles are set at signalized intersections in some cities in China. In fact, there are both advantages and disadvantages in this type of channelization. Relevant researches are seldom found in literature. From temporal-spatial aspects, a typical four-phase controlled intersection is analyzed in the light of waiting area for left-turn vehicles in this paper. Based on the relation between the left-turn vehicle arrival flow rate and the exclusive left-turn lane capacity, the probability conditions of left-turn vehicles spillback are developed before and after implementation of the design. Based on the method of conflict points, conflict between through vehicles and left-turn vehicles is analyzed. As a result, the conditions of arrival flow rate are given to set left-turn waiting area, and the signal timing principle is obtained.

Abstract:Large-scale traffic congestion often develops from local long queue in single intersections, accompanied by spillover. Current traffic control methods neglect the spillover effect, which may be one reason for the low efficiency during peak hours. A novel method for isolated intersection traffic control considering spillover is proposed here. This method distinguishes itself in three aspects: first, channelized section spillover is explicitly taken into account; second, the phase plans are enumerated, therefore flexibility is assured; third, the phase sequences are optimized as well. These features improve the effectiveness of the proposed method. Because of the nature of the established optimization model, the genetic algorithm is used to derive optimal signal settings. Numerical comparisons prove the usefulness of the proposed method.

Abstract:A multi-phase intelligent traffic controller based on inductive vehicle detection technology is designed to resolve complex intersection traffic signal control problems.With six control algorithms and eight operation modes,this controller can meet control requirements of most complex types of intersections.Also,the controller has the functions of green-conflict detection,fault detection and degradation mechanism under fault conditions,so the controller can ensure traffic safe and smooth in most cases.A single-intersection multi-phase traffic signal self-adaptive control strategy based on vehicle queuing length is proposed.The algorithm ensures traffic smooth and makes vehicle delay as short as possible.The controller has been practically applied in Hangzhou and other cities,and the results are satisfactory.

Abstract:This paper studies a frequent violation at multi-phase signal intersection of Beijing, that large number of pedestrians twice crossing street in the left-turn phase. Based on a large number of measured data, the influence of this violation on intersection safety is analyzed by using the theory of traffic conflict. To solve the violation, some strategy and methods have also been summarized. As an important link in City Road system and a crucial section of the whole road net, the intersections in the city act as the nodes connecting the crossing roads and control the vehicle volume. Due to the complexity of traffic participants and the high concentration of traffic flow, traffic accidents are very liable to occur in the crossings. According to the traffic accident statistics in China (2008), there are 46148 traffic accidents in crossings, taking account of 17.40% of the total number of the traffic accidents and leading to 9549 death. (Ministry of Public Security, 2009) Therefore the studies on the influence factors of crossings safety have been considered as an urgent need. Multi-phase signal has been adopted in increasing amount as an effective method to improve the traffic safety. In this system, the left-turn phase is put forward to separate the straight flow and left-turn flow to different time sections, thus to decrease the traffic confliction points. However, the implementation of left-turn phrase will to some extent extend the waiting time for the pedestrians passing through the streets. The pedestrians are likely to break the traffic rules and cross the roads regardless of the traffic signal if the waiting time is too long or the waiting crowd has reached saturation. Normally they no longer cross the road along with straight flow, but first move to the side-sections of left-turn lanes, then go across the intersection by taking the gaps between left-turn flow and wait until left-turn phase finishes. (Shown in Figure.1) The violation of signal will lead to more conflicts between vehicles and pedestrians hence have a negative influence on the whole safety issues.
On-ramp metering control strategy of urban expressway

Abstract:Taking Beijing urban expressway system as a research object, its traffic flow characteristics were analyzed based on the survey data collected from its representative sections, and a optimization control strategy for the on-ramp metering was suggested. A feedback control to the on-ramp was realized by the ime occupancy and the vehile speed as the control variables, and using the comprehensive control effect of both parameters to determine the on-ramp metering rate. The critical threshold in the model was calibrated using the linear discriminant function in the pattern recognition. The suggested strategy was verified by simulation with software VISSIM. The results show that compared with those of without signal control mode, the suggested strategy increases the average speed on the mainline upstream at on-ramp by about 8%, and decreases the travel time on the mainline section by 7.2%.
