Abstract:A quantum measurement is logically reversible if the premeasurement density operator of the measured system can be calculated from the postmeasurement density operator and from the outcome of the measurement. This paper analyzes why many quantum measurements are logically irreversible, shows how to make them logically reversible, and discusses reversing measurement that returns the postmeasurement state to the premeasurement state by another measurement (physical reversibility). Reversing measurement and unitarily reversible quantum operation are compared from the viewpoint of error correction in quantum computation.

Abstract:Irreversibility is often considered to characterize measurements in quantum mechanics. Fundamental problems with this characterization are addressed. First, whether a measurement is made in quantum mechanics is an arbitrary decision on the part of the experimenter concerning how the experimental circumstances are structured. Second, how is irreversibility that occurs in making a measurement explained in terms of a neurophysiological mechanism where a macroscopic measuring instrument is not required in principle to make the measurement, as in macroscopic quantum tunneling? Third, how does irreversibility characterize a negative observation where there is no physical interaction in the measurement process?

Abstract:We take the view that physical quantities are values generated by processes in measurement, not pre-existent objective quantities, and that a measurement result is strictly a product of the apparatus and the subject of the measurement. We habitually make an inaccurate statements when we speak of the measurement of a quantity by an apparatus. These statements can be formalised as a many valued logic with the structure of a vector space with a hermitian form in such a way as to generate probabilities in the results of measurement. The difference between this and classical probability theory is that we are not finding probabilities generated by unknown variables, but probabilities generated by unknown structure. We thus interpret quantum logic as the application of complex truth values to statements in an inaccurate language, and find that the properties of vector space hold for approximate measurement as well as for measurement of optimal accuracy, suggesting that Planck's constant governs the scale of the fundamental structures of matter.

Abstract:The quantum measurement problem considered for measuring system (MS) model which consist of measured state S (particle), detector D and information processing device O. For spin chains and other O models the state evolution for MS observables measurements studied. It's shown that specific O states structure forbids the measurement of MS interference terms which discriminate pure and mixed S states. It results in the reduction MS Hilbert space to O representation in which MS evolution is irreversible, which in operational formalism corresponds to S state collapse. In radiation decoherence O model Glauber restrictions on QED field observables results in analogous irreversible MS + field evolution. The results interpretation in Quantum Information framework and Rovelli Relational Quantum Mechanics discussed.

Abstract:The main goal of this paper is to give a rigorous mathematical description of systems for processing quantum information. To do it authors consider abstract state machines as models of classical computational systems. This class of machines is refined by introducing constrains on a state structure, namely, it is assumed that state of computational process has two components: a control unit state and a memory state. Then authors modify the class of models by substituting the deterministic evolutionary mechanism for a stochastic evolutionary mechanism. This approach can be generalized to the quantum case: one can replace transformations of a classical memory with quantum operations on a quantum memory. Hence the authors come to the need to construct a mathematical model of an operation on the quantum memory. It leads them to the notion of an abstract quantum automaton. Further the authors demonstrate that a quantum teleportation process is described as evolutionary process for some abstract quantum automaton.

Abstract:Quantum computation is a novel way of information processing which allows, for certain classes of problems, exponential speedups over classical computation. Various models of quantum computation exist, such as the adiabatic, circuit and measurement-based models. They have been proven equivalent in their computational power, but operate very differently. As such, they may be suitable for realization in different physical systems, and also offer different perspectives on open questions such as the precise origin of the quantum speedup. Here, we give an introduction to the one-way quantum computer, a scheme of measurement-based quantum computation. In this model, the computation is driven by local measurements on a carefully chosen, highly entangled state. We discuss various aspects of this computational scheme, such as the role of entanglement and quantum correlations. We also give examples for ground states of simple Hamiltonians which enable universal quantum computation by local measurements.

Abstract:Reversible computing is motivated by both pragmatic and foundational considerations arising from a variety of disciplines. We take a particular path through the development of reversible computation, emphasizing compositional reversible computation. We start from a historical perspective, by reviewing those approaches that developed reversible extensions of lambda-calculi, Turing machines, and communicating process calculi. These approaches share a common challenge: computations made reversible in this way do not naturally compose locally. We then turn our attention to computational models that eschew the detour via existing irreversible models. Building on an original analysis by Landauer, the insights of Bennett, Fredkin, and Toffoli introduced a fresh approach to reversible computing in which reversibility is elevated to the status of the main design principle. These initial models are expressed using low-level bit manipulations, however. Abstracting from the low-level of the Bennett-Fredkin-Toffoli models and pursuing more intrinsic, typed, and algebraic models, naturally leads to rig categories as the canonical model for compositional reversible programming. The categorical model reveals connections to type isomorphisms, symmetries, permutations, groups, and univalent universes. This, in turn, paves the way for extensions to reversible programming based on monads and arrows. These extensions are shown to recover conventional irreversible programming, a variety of reversible computational effects, and more interestingly both pure (measurement-free) and measurement-based quantum programming.

Abstract:We present a general theory of quantum information processing devices, that can be applied to human decision makers, to atomic multimode registers, or to molecular high-spin registers. Our quantum decision theory is a generalization of the quantum theory of measurement, endowed with an action ring, a prospect lattice and a probability operator measure. The algebra of probability operators plays the role of the algebra of local observables. Because of the composite nature of prospects and of the entangling properties of the probability operators, quantum interference terms appear, which make actions noncommutative and the prospect probabilities non-additive. The theory provides the basis for explaining a variety of paradoxes typical of the application of classical utility theory to real human decision making. The principal advantage of our approach is that it is formulated as a self-consistent mathematical theory, which allows us to explain not just one effect but actually all known paradoxes in human decision making. Being general, the approach can serve as a tool for characterizing quantum information processing by means of atomic, molecular, and condensed-matter systems.
Determinism and Computational Power of Real Measurement-Based Quantum Computation

Abstract:Measurement-based quantum computing (MBQC) is a universal model for quantum computation. The combinatorial characterisation of determinism in this model, powered by measurements, and hence, fundamentally probabilistic, is the cornerstone of most of the breakthrough results in this field. The most general known sufficient condition for a deterministic MBQC to be driven is that the underlying graph of the computation has a particular kind of flow called Pauli flow. The necessity of the Pauli flow was an open question. We show that Pauli flow is not necessary, providing several counter examples. We prove however that Pauli flow is necessary for determinism in the real MBQC model, an interesting and useful fragment of MBQC.We explore the consequences of this result for real MBQC and its applications. Real MBQC and more generally real quantum computing is known to be universal for quantum computing. Real MBQC has been used for interactive proofs by McKague. The two-prover case corresponds to real-MBQC on bipartite graphs. While (complex) MBQC on bipartite graphs are universal, the universality of real MBQC on bipartite graphs was an open question. We show that real bipartite MBQC is not universal proving that all measurements of real bipartite MBQC can be parallelised leading to constant depth computations. As a consequence, McKague’s techniques cannot lead to two-prover interactive proofs.

Abstract:Deterministic one-way time-bounded multi-counter automata are studied with respect to their ability to perform reversible computations, which means that the automata are also backward deterministic and, thus, are able to uniquely step the computation back and forth. We study the computational capacity of such devices and obtain separation results between irreversible and reversible k-counter automata for polynomial and superpolynomial time. For polynomial time and exponential time we obtain moreover infinite and tight hierarchies with respect to the number of counters. These hierarchies are shown with Kolmogorov complexity and incompressibility arguments. In this way, on passing we can prove these hierarchies also for ordinary counter automata. This improves the known hierarchies for ordinary counter automata in the sense that we consider here a weaker acceptance condition. Then, it turns out that k +1 reversible counters are not better than k ordinary counters and vice versa. Finally, almost all usually studied decidability questions turn out to be undecidable and not even semidecidable for reversible multi-counter automata, if at least two counters are provided. In case of reversible one-counter automata, it is possible to show that the inclusion problem is also not even semidecidable.

Abstract:The so-called measurement problem of quantum theory (QT) is still lacking a satisfactory, or at least widely agreed upon, solution. A number of theories, known as interpretations of quantum theory, have been proposed and found differing acceptance among physicists. Most of the proposed theories try to explain what happens during a QT measurement using a modification of the declarative equations that define the possible results of a measurement of QT observables or by making assumptions outside the scope of falsifiable physics. This paper proposes a solution to the QT measurement problem in terms of a model of the process for the evolution of two QT systems that interact in a way that represents a measurement. The model assumes that the interactions between the measured QT object and the measurement apparatus are "normal" interactions which adhere to the laws of quantum field theory. This causes certain limitations associated with QT measurements.

Intrinsic and Measured Information in Separable Quantum Processes

Abstract:Stationary quantum information sources emit sequences of correlated qudits -- that is, structured quantum stochastic processes. If an observer performs identical measurements on a qudit sequence, the outcomes are a realization of a classical stochastic process. We introduce quantum-information-theoretic properties for separable qudit sequences that serve as bounds on the classical information properties of subsequent measured processes. For sources driven by hidden Markov dynamics we describe how an observer can temporarily or permanently synchronize to the source's internal state using specific positive operator-valued measures or adaptive measurement protocols. We introduce a method for approximating an information source with an independent and identically-distributed, Markov, or larger memory model through tomographic reconstruction. We identify broad classes of separable processes based on their quantum information properties and the complexity of measurements required to synchronize to and accurately reconstruct them.

Abstract:We give a list of equivalent conditions for reversibility of the adjoint of a unital Schwarz map with respect to a set of quantum states. A large class of such conditions is given by preservation of distinguishability measures: f-divergences, L_1 -distance, quantum Chernoff and Hoeffding distances; here we summarize and extend the known results. Moreover, we prove a number of conditions in terms of the properties of a quantum Radon-Nikodym derivative and factorization of states in the given set. Finally, we show that reversibility is equivalent with preservation of a large class of quantum Fisher informations and \chi^2-divergences.

Microscopic analysis of the microscopic reversibility in quantum systems

Abstract:We investigate the robustness of the microscopic reversibility in open quantum systems which is discussed by Monnai [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1106.1982" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1106.1982">arXiv:1106.1982</a> (2011)]. We derive an exact relation between the forward transition probability and the reversed transition probability in the case of a general measurement basis. We show that the microscopic reversibility acquires some corrections in general and discuss the physical meaning of the corrections. Under certain processes, some of the correction terms vanish and we numerically confirmed that the remaining correction term becomes negligible; the microscopic reversibility almost holds even when the local system cannot be regarded as macroscopic.

Abstract:We define a formal framework for reasoning about linear-time properties of quantum systems in which quantum automata are employed in the modeling of systems and certain (closed) subspaces of state Hilbert spaces are used as the atomic propositions about the behavior of systems. We provide an algorithm for verifying invariants of quantum automata. Then, an automata-based model-checking technique is generalized for the verification of safety properties recognizable by reversible automata and ω--properties recognizable by reversible Büchi automata.

Abstract:Landauer's Principle that information loss from a computation implies entropy increase can be rigorously proved from mathematical physics. However, carefully examining its detailed formulation reveals that the traditional identification of logically reversible computational operations with bijective transformations of the full digital state space is actually not the correct logical-level characterization of the full set of classical computational operations that can be carried out physically with asymptotically zero energy dissipation. To find the correct logical conditions for physical reversibility, we must account for initial-state probabilities when applying the Principle. The minimal logical-level requirement for the physical reversibility of deterministic computational operations is that the subset of initial states that exhibit nonzero probability in a given statistical operating context must be transformed one-to-one into final states. Thus, any computational operation is conditionally reversible relative to any sufficiently-restrictive precondition on its initial state, and the minimum dissipation required for any deterministic operation by Landauer's Principle asymptotically approaches 0 when the probability of meeting any preselected one of its suitable preconditions approaches 1. This realization facilitates simpler designs for asymptotically thermodynamically reversible computational hardware, compared to designs that are restricted to using only fully-bijective operations such as Toffoli type operations. Thus, this more general framework for reversible computing provides a more effective theoretical foundation to use for the design of practical reversible computers than does the more restrictive traditional model of reversible logic. In this paper, we formally develop the theoretical foundations of the generalized model, and briefly survey some of its applications.

Abstract:The act of describing how a physical process changes a system is the basis for understanding observed phenomena. For quantum-mechanical processes in particular, the affect of processes on quantum states profoundly advances our knowledge of the natural world, from understanding counter-intuitive concepts to the development of wholly quantum-mechanical technology. Here, we show that quantum-mechanical processes can be quantified using a generic classical-process model through which any classical strategies of mimicry can be ruled out. We demonstrate the success of this formalism using fundamental processes postulated in quantum mechanics, the dynamics of open quantum systems, quantum-information processing, the fusion of entangled photon pairs, and the energy transfer in a photosynthetic pigment-protein complex. Since our framework does not depend on any specifics of the states being processed, it reveals a new class of correlations in the hierarchy between entanglement and Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen steering and paves the way for the elaboration of a generic method for quantifying physical processes.
