Abstract:Porous nano-flake-like α-Co(OH)2 thin films were prepared by electro-deposition on graphene nanosheets (GNS) and functionalized f-GNS at 1.0 V. The functionality of hydrophilic functional groups was increased by acid treatment to enhance electrode wettability and improve the compatibility between the electrode and the electrolyte. Hydrophilic functional groups can act as anchoring sites for the precursors, enabling Co(OH)2 to more grow easily on an f-GNS electrode. The density and thickness of the α-Co(OH)2 deposition on the f-GNS electrode (13.1 μm) was greater than that on the GNS (12.3 μm) electrode. The specific discharge capacitance of the α-Co(OH)2/f-GNS electrode decreased from an initial value of 2,149mFcm−2 to 1,944 mFcm−2 over 1000 cycles, demonstrating the retention of 90% of its discharge capacitance. A hybrid capacitor was also assembled to evaluate the characteristics of a two-electrode system using α-Co(OH)2/f-GNS as the cathode. The power and energy densities of the Co(OH)2/f-GNS supercapacitor are 1,137Wkg−1 and 43Whkg−1 at 8mAcm−2, respectively.
Mn0.5co2.5o4 Nanofibers Sandwiched in Graphene Sheets for Efficient Supercapacitor Electrode Materials

Abstract:Self-assembled manganese cobalt oxide (Mn0.5Co2.5O4) nanofibers sandwiched in graphene sheets (Mn0.5Co2.5O4@G) are successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal treatment and annealing process. Owning to the unique sandwich-like structures, rich active sites, and boosted electrical conductivity, Mn0.5Co2.5O4@G composite demonstrates superior electrochemical performance for potential supercapacitors. In a three-electrode system, it exhibits excellent cycling stability with a specific capacitance retention of 93.8% after 10 000 cycles at a current density of 10 A g(-1,) and achieves specific capacitances of 617 and 434 F g(-1) at the ultrahigh current densities of 30 and 40 A g(-1), respectively. For an asymmetric supercapacitor of Mn0.5Co2.5O4@G/AC, high energy densities of 36.8 and 13.6 W h kg(-1) are also achieved at power densities of 147.3 and 3755.8 W kg(-1), respectively. It is believed that the synthesized Mn0.5Co2.5O4@G composite can be a promising electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors, and the present synthetic strategy can be further extended for designing many other functional composites with desirable nanostructures and performance.
Electrochemical Capacitance Performance of Fe-Doped Co3o4/Graphene Nanocomposite: Investigation on the Effect of Iron

Abstract:Fe-doped Co3O4/graphene nanocomposite is prepared by a facile hydrothermal route and employed in electrode material of pseudocapacitor. The relevant Fe3+ ions are successfully introduced into Co3O4 lattice. The incorporation of Fe3+ ions leads to lattice distortion of Co3O4 and has synergistic effect on the morphology of Co3O4 crystal. In particular, Fe3+ ions doped Co3O4 nanosized particles (∼12nm in sized) with almost no agglomeration are more uniformly deposited on the surface of graphene nanosheets, contrasting with pure Co3O4, which confirms the influence of Fe dopant substitution on the corresponding crystal surface nature. Evaluated by electrochemical measurements, as the Fe doping concentration increasing up to 1:10, the specific capacitance value of the Fe-doped Co3O4/graphene nanocomposite reaches a value of 671 Fg−1 at a current density of 5 Ag−1, and the capacitance retains at 98.7% after 1000 cycles. The fact that the improved performances compared to pure Co3O4 and Co3O4/graphene nanocomposite are demonstrated with a high specific capacitance, cycle stability and rate capability. Appropriate Fe3+ ions incorporated into the Co3O4 framework are highly beneficial for the stabilizing the lattice structure and then improves capacitance performance.
Preparation and Capacitance Performance of Ag–graphene Based Nanocomposite

Abstract:Ag–graphene nanocomposite has been prepared by a simple way in situ simultaneous reduction of Ag+ ions and graphite oxide in a solution of hydrazine hydrate at 95°C for 12h. The morphology and structure of the obtained material are examined by XRD, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, and XPS. The Ag nanoparticles with an average particle size of 20nm are decorated on the surface of graphene in uniform and regular stacks, while the graphene nanosheets exist as an exfoliation state in Ag–graphene nanocomposite. The tremendous intensity decrease of the C–O and CO XPS peaks and the disappearance of FT-IR band around 1730cm−1 for Ag–graphene nanocomposite suggest that the graphite oxide has been reduced into graphene. Electrochemical properties are characterized by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 2.0molL−1 KNO3 electrolyte. Ag–graphene nanocomposite electrode shows a characteristic Faradic capacitance behavior, and the specific capacitance value is 220Fg−1 at a scan rate of 10mVs−1, which is much higher than that of the graphene electrode (140Fg−1). The high capacitance is ascribed to the large pseudocapacitance from the residual C–O and CO function groups, high electrical conductivity, and less aggregation of the graphene nanosheets due to the existence of Ag particles.
Enhanced Supercapacitor Performance Based on 3D Porous Graphene with MoO2 Nanoparticles

Abstract:Three dimensional (3D) porous graphene decorated with MoO2 nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method and characterized by SEM and TEM, x-ray diffraction, Raman spectra, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption–desorption analysis and electrochemical experiments. The results revealed that the in situ formed monoclinic MoO2 nanoparticles were randomly decorated on the surface of graphene sheets and the obtained graphene–MoO2 nanohybrids were 3D porous structures. The mass ratio of molybdenum precursor with GO has effects on the specific surface area and the electrochemical properties of the nanocomposite. The M30G1 (the mass ratio of molybdenum precursor with GO was 30:1) composite electrode exhibited a higher specific capacitance and better cycling stability. The specific capacitances were 356 F/g at the current density of 0.1 A/g in KOH electrolyte, which predicted their potential application in energy storage. The electrochemical performance of M30G1 composite was also investigated in Na2SO4 electrolyte, which was poorer than that in KOH electrolyte. Therefore, the chosen of electrolyte is important to materials performance.

Abstract:MnO2 nanowire/Ag nanoparticles composites for supercapacitor were synthesized with a two-step procedure, which involves preparing MnO2 nanowires and acquiring conductive Ag nanoparticles grown on the surface of MnO2 nanowires with reducing Ag+. The results show that Ag nanoparticles are not only to improve the electric conductivity, but also to enhance the structural stability of the composites. The composites have an excellent specific capacitance of 396.4F/g at a scan rate of 50mV/s in 1M Na2SO4 aqueous solution, which is almost five times that of the pure MnO2 nanowires. Besides, capacitance retention of 95.2% for the MnO2/Ag over 2000 charge/discharge cycles at a charge/discharge current of 5A/g is much better than that of the pure MnO2 NWs.
Synergistic Effect of Fe3O4/reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposites for Supercapacitors with Good Cycling Life

Abstract:Fe3O4/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composites were prepared through a facile hydrolysis route and subsequent annealing process and used as the electroactive materials for supercapacitors. The asprepared Fe3O4/rGO composites exhibit much higher specific capacitances than either pure rGO or pure Fe3O4, meanwhile, the electrochemical performance of Fe3O4/rGO composites with different amount of AGO has been compared. The optimized Fe3O4/rGO composites (FG-0.8) exhibit the highest specific capacitance of 350.6 Fg(-1) at 1 mV s(-1), 157.6 F g(-1) of the specific capacitance can still be retained when the scan rate increases 100 times to 100 mV s-1, indicating a good rate capability. These Fe3O4/rGO composites also show excellent cycling performance without any decrease of specific capacitance after 10,000 cycles. These fascinating performances can be attributed to the positive synergistic effect between Fe3O4 and rGO. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:High stable, flexible and interconnected Co3O4 nanosheets with embedded Ag quantum dots (AgQDs) were uniformly grown on three dimensional graphene (3DG) networks and served as supercapacitor electrode to enhance the pseudocapacitance performance. The AgQDs were used to facilitate the growth of the Co3O4 nanosheets and improve the electrical conductivity of the hybrid electrode by forming a good ohmic contact and provide direct and stable pathways for rapid electron transport. The AgQDs contribute to produce an improved areal capacitance of 421mFcm−2 (1052.5Fg−1) and 53.3mFcm−2 for the Ag/Co3O4/3DG hybrid, for both the three- and the two-electrode configuration, respectively. These values are about three times higher compared to a pristine Co3O4/3DG electrode. The capacitance retention of ∼120% after 104 cycles shows that a Ag/Co3O4/3DG hybrid can provide a long and stable cycle performance with a high specific capacitance. This study provides an effective strategy to improve the performance of electrode materials for supercapacitors with a high efficiency and long life, which makes them promising candidates for future energy-storage applications.

Abstract:In this work, we grow CNTs on electrochemical exfoliation graphene with few FeCo(G-CNTs-FeCo) by hydrothermal as a new supercapacitors electrode. It has excellent specific capacitance (560.26 F/g at 1 mV/s) and low charge transfer resistance (30.79 Ω). The supercapacitor electrode exhibits better electron conductivity and electrochemical performance than pure graphene which was found to combine the merit of graphene, CNTs and FeCo metals. This paper would help to provide a method to improve graphene SCs performance.

Abstract:We report the superior capacitance of functionalized graphene prepared by controlled reduction of graphene oxide (GO). In a solvothermal method, GO dispersed in dimethylformamide (DMF) was thermally treated at a moderate temperature (150 degrees C), which allows a fine control of the density of functionalities. Surface functionalities on graphene would enable a high pseudocapacitance, good wetting property, and acceptable electric conductivity. A specific capacitance up to 276 F/g was achieved based on functionalized graphene at a discharge current of 0.1 A/g in a 1 M H2SO4 electrolyte, which is much higher than the benchmark material. The excellent performance of the functionalized graphene signifies the importance of controlling the surface chemistry of graphene-based materials.

Abstract:Well-intergrown nanocrystals of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8) supported on three-dimensional (3D) graphene were prepared by a counter diffusion technique. The incorporation of ZIF-8 crystals greatly improves the surface areas of the graphene composites. The carbonized graphene–ZIF composites with hierarchical pore structures showed high electrochemical capacitance and good stability. This work provides an efficient method to synthesize porous carbon materials with high capacitance.

Abstract:Regarded as a special transition metal oxide anode material, ZnCo2O4 can offer a theoretical capacity of 975 mAh g−1, which is derived from the synergistic lithium storage of the conversion reaction and alloying process. Sadly, the large volume variation in repeated charge and discharge processes and poor intrinsic conductivity have obstructed its development and popularization. In this work, a series of Ag-coated ZnCo2O4/C nanosheet composites were synthesized via a facile thermal decomposition strategy. The XRD, SEM, EDS, and XPS results confirm that Ag has covered the surface of ZnCo2O4/C. The obtained Ag-coated ZnCo2O4/C nanosheet composites display better electrochemical performance than ZnCo2O4/C, and the coating amount of Ag plays an important role. When the coating amount of Ag is set as 0.05, it can reveal the best electrochemical performance among all the Ag-coated ZnCo2O4/C nanosheet composites and deliver a capacity of 679.8 mAh g−1 after 300 cycles. The enhancement of electrochemical performance should be attributed to the elevated conductivity caused by the Ag coating.

Abstract:Co3O4 has been extensively studied as a potential electrode material for supercapacitors. However, it has some limitations such as low conductivity and ion diffusion that have hindered its widespread application. To overcome the low electron transport efficiency of Co3O4 electrodes, a combination of in-situ precipitation and carbon-assisted methods were performed to synthesize a composite consisting of Co3O4 uniformly dispersed on the surface of graphitic carbon nitride (Co3O4/g-C3N4). In this work, electrochemical measurements in a 6 M KOH electrolyte reveal that the Co3O4/g-C3N4 composite electrode exhibits a higher specific capacitance (1071 F g−1 at a current density of 1 A g−1) than the pure Co3O4 electrode (217 F g−1 at 1 A g−1). After 4000 cycles, the capacitance remains 80% of its original value. The Co3O4/g-C3N4 electrode also showed excellent electrical conductivity and low resistance, as determined using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Moreover the Co3O4/g-C3N4//AC asymmetric device with this electrode delivered energy density is 20.4 Wh kg−1 at the power density is 0.8 kW kg−1. The results illustrate that Co3O4/g-C3N4 composites show great promise for application in supercapacitors.

Abstract:Carbon nanomaterials are promising for making high-performance supercapacitors. However, their specific capacitances and energy densities still need further improvement for many important and challenging applications. Here we report the superior capacitive performance of heteroatom-doped graphene synthesized by a thermal annealing method at low temperature (200°C), and remarkably enhanced specific capacitance of 629Fg−1 at 0.2Ag−1, energy density of 43Whkg−1 at 140Wkg−1, and cycle life of 10,000 times are achieved. The mechanisms for the outstanding performance are analyzed, and a corresponding model connecting the dopant and capacitance is proposed and validated by the first-principle calculations. The thermal annealing temperature plays a critical role in the dopant configuration of heteroatom and hence significantly affects the capacitive properties of graphene. If annealing at low temperature, non-graphitic dopant configuration is dominant, inducing a large Faradaic pseudocapacitance; if annealing at high temperature, graphitic dopant configuration is dominant, giving rise to a relatively lower electrical double layer capacitance. These findings demonstrate that the supercapacitance of graphene can be purposely tuned by the rational doping of heteroatoms, which may open up new strategies for further design and application of advanced graphene-based materials for electrochemical supercapacitors.

Abstract:A method for producing nanocomposites of transition metal oxides A(3)O(4) (where A represents Mn, Fe or Co) and graphene nanosheets (GNS) is presented. The reduction of graphene oxide (GO) and the formation of A(3)O(4) nanoparticles (NPs) were carried out simultaneously during the reaction. The electrochemical properties of A(3)O(4)-GNS nanocomposites as electrode materials for supercapacitors are investigated by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge tests. specific capacitance (708, 358 and 240 F g(-1), respectively), high energy density (20, 10 and 7 W h kg(-1), respectively) and good electrochemical stability (retention of 73%, 67.8% and 95.8%, respectively, after 1000 charge-discharge cycles). The excellent electrochemical performance of the A(3)O(4)-graphene nanocomposites indicates great potential in the application in commercial supercapacitors.
Enhanced charge storage in supercapacitors using carbon nanotubes and N-doped graphene quantum dots-modified (NiMn)Co2O4

Abstract:The integration of ternary metal oxides into carbon materials is anticipated to significantly boost the electrochemical performance of supercapacitor electrodes. This article synthesized carbon nanotubes (CNT)/(NiMn)Co2O4 composite materials using a straightforward hydrothermal method and subsequently prepared composite thin films of CNT/P-(NiMn)Co2O4@NGQD by phosphating and incorporating nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (NGQD). These films served as the functional electrode material for supercapacitors, enhancing their performance capabilities. The specific capacity of CNT/P-(NiMn)Co2O4@NGQD was measured at 2172.0 F g-1 at a current density of 1 A g-1, maintaining a capacitance of 1954.0 F g-1 at 10 A g-1, thus demonstrating excellent rate performance. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) further revealed enhancements in electrolyte flow dynamics and capacitance behavior post-NGQD introduction. The energy density of the composite material reached 94.4 Wh kg-1 at power density of 800 W kg-1, demonstrating superior electrochemical performance. The enhancement in these electrochemical properties is attributed to the high specific surface area and active sites of CNT/P-(NiMn)Co2O4@NGQD films, along with the synergistic effects of NGQD and metal ions facilitating rapid electrons and charge transfer. This work provides new insights into developing high-performance supercapacitors.
Preparation of graphene/Co3O4 composites by hydrothermal method and their electrochemical properties

Abstract:In this study, graphene/Co3O4 composites are prepared through a simple process under mild hydrothermal conditions. Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) can produce many OH− and CO32− ions after dissolution and hydrolysis in a water–isopropanol system, thereby making it applicable as both depositing agent and reducing agent in the synthesis of graphene/Co2(OH)2CO3 composites. Remarkably, the galvanosta charge–discharge test shows that the specific capacitance value of the as-obtained composites reaches a high value of 443Fg−1 at a high current density of 5Ag−1, which is significantly improved in relation to Co3O4, and the capacitance retains 54% of capacitance at 60Ag−1. The fact that the specific capacitance remains 97.1% after 1000 continuous charge–discharge cycles at 10Ag−1 indicates that the as-prepared material has an excellent cycle life. The effect of the feeding ratios between Co3O4 and graphite oxide on the electrochemical performance has also been studied.

Abstract:A cobalt sulfide decorated reduced graphene oxide (CoS/rGO) nanocomposite was successfully synthesized via a facile one-step hydrothermal route assisted by ethylenediamine. The crystalline phase, structure and morphology of the products were systematically characterized by x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, nitrogen (N2) absorption–desorption isotherm, Raman spectra and thermogravimetric analysis. The results show that CoS nanoparticles with the size of 30–100 nm are well dispersed on or anchored in the creasy rGO sheets substrate. Combining the CoS compound nature with the rGO outstanding characteristics, the as-obtained CoS/rGO as an electrode for a supercapacitor harvests high specific capacitance, excellent long-cycle stability and remarkable high-rate capability, which are all superior to those of pristine CoS. Importantly, this nanocomposite possesses a specific capacitance of 813 F g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 (about 2 times that of pure CoS) and excellent cycling stability with 91.2% capacitance retention after 1000 repetitive charge–discharge cycles. It is noteworthy that this approach can be readily applicable to the nanoparticle decoration of graphene sheets and the preparation of other graphene-based nanocomposites for supercapacitors.

Abstract:FeMoO4 doped graphene composites were prepared by a facile hydrothermal method and the composites were first used as active electrode materials for supercapacitors. The morphological and structural characteristics of FeMoO4/graphene composites were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements. The electrochemical behaviors were investigated using cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge–discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 1.0M Na2SO3 electrolyte. It was shown that the specific capacitance of FeMoO4/graphene composites reached to 135Fg−1 at current density of 1.0Ag−1 and was highly improved compared with that of graphene (66Fg−1) or FeMoO4 (96Fg−1). Moreover, in comparison with pure FeMoO4, FeMoO4/graphene composites exhibited lower electrochemical resistance and longer cycle life, indicating that graphene enhanced the electrochemical performances of FeMoO4.

Abstract:Porous Co(3)O(4) nanowires with large aspect ratio have been obtained by annealing long Co(CO(3))(0.5)(OH)·0.11H(2)O precursor nanowires synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method. The results show that the amount of the additive (urea) has an important impact on the morphology of the as-synthesized cobalt-carbonate-hydroxide intermediate, where the uniformity and the overall structure can be controlled by changing the urea concentration. After the heat treatment, the as-obtained phase-pure Co(3)O(4) nanowires with a well retained structure are applied as the electrode material for supercapacitors, and the sample exhibits excellent performance with a high specific capacitance of 240 F g(-1) after 2000 charge/discharge cycles, corresponding to a retention of 98% of the initial capacitance.
