Abstract:Our aim in this paper is to describe an opportunity for physics students and faculty to learn about an environmental issue of much current interest: the quantification, or footprint analysis, of carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2</sub>) and reactive nitrogen emissions. These can originate from human activities such as energy use, food consumption, and transportation, and are among the greenhouse gases (GHG) that contribute to global warming and rising sea levels. Moreover, nitrogen compounds also have effects on the chemistry and biology of the environment. Analyzing both of these footprints together captures multiple environmental impacts from the local to the global levels and can suggest mitigation strategies. We focus on the experiences of interdisciplinary teams, which included physics students and faculty, and that used the leading greenhouse gas analysis platform SIMAP (Sustainability Indicator Management and Analysis Platform).

Abstract:Concerns about climate change are a hot topic in the current debate about a sustainable future, and despite more than 30 years of international conferences, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP), the annual usage amount of fossil fuel-based energy sources has remained largely unchanged, and the green transition to a carbon-free energy system is progressing at a much slower pace than anticipated. This paper presents an original approach that consists in addressing the green transition's dilemmas by analyzing the complex interplay of strongly interwoven forces hindering the rapid adoption of so-called green energy sources scrutinized from a three-fold perspective: socio-psychological; political–strategic and territorial; and technological. Moreover, these forces are ranked according to the magnitude of their impact on the anticipated transition to green, and it is estimated by logistic fit extrapolation that the total share of the contribution of low-carbon sources might reach a maximum of about 25% among all energy sources in 2050. A final original picture is presented, summarizing how all the involved forces are acting upon the expected transition as well as their consequences.

Abstract:This research examines the necessary transition to a resource-efficient and sustainable economy, looking at the methods and policies that are essential to this revolutionary process. Abstract:As 2005, the International Year of Physics, comes to an end, two physicists working primarily in geophysical research reflect on how geophysics is not an applied physics. Although geophysics has certainly benefited from progress in physics and sometimes emulated the reductionist program of mainstream physics, it has also educated the physics community about some of the generic behaviors of strongly nonlinear systems. Dramatic examples are the insights we have gained into the ``emergent'' phenomena of chaos, cascading instabilities, turbulence, self-organization, fractal structure, power-law variability, anomalous scaling, threshold dynamics, creep, fracture, and so on. In all of these examples, relatively simple models have been able to explain the recurring features of apparently very complex signals and fields. It appears that the future of the intricate relation between physics and geophysics will be as exciting as its past has been characterized by a mutual fascination. Physics departments in our universities should capitalize on this trend to attract and retain young talent motivated to address problems that really matter for the future of the planet. A pressing topic with huge impact on populations and that is challenging enough for both physics and geophysics communities to work together like never before is the understanding and prediction of extreme events.

Abstract:How can econophysics contribute to economics? Since the relation between basic principles of physics and economics is not established, there is no reason why physical theories should be of any value for economic theory. While economic theories leave the physicists largely without orientation in this field, econo-physicists should orient themselves at concrete problems from economic practice rather than from economic academics. Thereby physicists should respect the lead of economists. This then also puts physics closer to econometrics. Then the natural strength of physics in dealing with empirical data as the fundamental basis for its research could be valuable for both, theory as well as for applications in economics.

Abstract:Introduction. Global warming and so-called the “greenhouse effect” is one of the most discussed problems of physics and geopolitics, which has caused protest environmental movements in the world. Problem Statement. Widely discussed are both anthropogenic (the emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere) and the natural concepts of global warming with the dramatic effects of climate change on the planet and individual regions. Purpose. Evaluate the state of the problem, to present the results of research and measures to possible reduction of the greenhouse effect. Materials and methods. Authoritative literature sources with the analysis of anthropogenic and natural factors of global warming are used, including with the explanation of the physical processes which are shown at solar-geomagnetic activity and other natural phenomena. Results. The main causes and mechanisms of natural and man-made nature for the actual growth of greenhouse gas emissions and global temperature in the 20th century are identified and their estimates for the period up to 2100 are given. Conclusions. Most likely, the effect of global warming on the planet's climate is totally due to natural causes of cosmogenic origin and somewhat exacerbated by the effects of industrial development of mankind. For the final solution of this problem it is necessary to fully and adequately conduct more in-depth complex experimental and theoretical-model studies taking into account various factors of geological, climatic, meteorological, thermophysical, astrophysical nature and application of modern methods of mathematical physics, statistics and probability theory. reasonable measures to adapt the economy and life to climate change.

This paper seeks to address this issue.Design/methodology/approach – The methodology looks at energy consumption in journal production.Findings – Electronic publication does not produce a perfectly green product, but more of a dark green one with many aspects where energy costs could be saved. A genuinely ecologically friendly publication process requires conscious planning and determination.Originality/value – Users can stop demanding paper as well as electronic copies, and can also choose more energy‐efficient hardware and energy sources.

Abstract:Physics engines, a quintessential product of computer science, have become indispensable tools in simulating physical phenomena through mathematical computations. Their prominence in game development, engineering simulations, and various physics applications is unquestionable. Ensuring their optimization is pivotal for meeting the rigorous demands of practical experiments. The significance of this study is twofold: theoretical foundations and practical necessities. From a theoretical standpoint, this paper delves into the core principles and architectural underpinnings of physics engines. We venture into the integration of multithreading and the application of niche algorithms within these engines. Further analysis illuminates how leveraging these technologies can drastically enhance the performance of a physics engine. In culmination, we propose a robust, feasible theoretical framework for physics engines, filling in the pivotal details. This exploration aims to galvanize and steer the evolution of physics engine design. Addressing practical necessities, our research emphasizes real-world applications of various physics engines. We examine tailored optimization strategies suited for specific needs and investigate methodologies to elevate the operational efficiency of specialized physics engines. This dimension of our study holds substantial real-world implications.

Abstract:All aspects of the global energy transition - from decarbonization to adaptation - require massive investments of several trillion US Dollars annually. In the respective debates in political economy and beyond, the question of how to mobilize adequate volumes of such 'green' finance is central. However, there is little agreement on what constitutes this type of finance and how energy research can employ the concept to critically analyze and evaluate green transitions. In order to advance the conceptual and empirical work on this key issue, I review and describe the main elements of the global landscape of green finance governing its mobilization and proliferation. I first review the major actors involved in the supply and provision of green finance. Second, I evaluate the central instruments of this provision, their volumes and transformative potentials. Third, I analyze key political faultlines and trade-offs in the provision and contestation of green finance, which will shape the coming decades of green transitions. The paper concludes by discussing how this conceptual apparatus can facilitate next research steps.

Abstract:The concept of the green economy presented in three reports from leading global organizations is examined in this paper. These include the United Nations Environment Programme's Towards a Green Economy, the World Bank's Inclusive Green Growth and the Organisation for Economic Co‐operation and Development's Towards Green Growth. The main critiques of the concept of the green economy are also considered. Contrary to views that the green economy merely represents ‘green‐washing’ and tweaking of the current economic system, this paper concludes that the green economy has the potential to effect substantive and transformative change towards the goal of sustainable development. Abstract:The demand in computing power has never stopped growing over the years. Today, the performance of the most powerful systems exceeds the exascale and the number of petascale systems continues to grow. Unfortunately, this growth also goes hand in hand with ever-increasing energy costs, which in turn means a significant carbon footprint. In view of the environmental crisis, this paper intents to look at the often hidden issue of energy consumption of HPC systems. As it is not easy to access the data of the constructors, we then consider the Top500 as the tip of the iceberg to identify the trends of the whole domain.The objective of this work is to analyze Top500 and Green500 data from several perspectives in order to identify the dynamic of the domain regarding its environmental impact. The contributions are to take stock of the empirical laws governing the evolution of HPC computing systems both from the performance and energy perspectives, to analyze the most relevant data for developing the performance and energy efficiency of large-scale computing systems, to put these analyses into perspective with effects and impacts (lifespan of the HPC systems) and finally to derive a predictive model for the weight of HPC sector within the horizon 2030.

Abstract:Green finance, which includes climate finance, is a highly relevant issue for climate change mitigation and adaptation, as well as for the transition to a renewable and sustainable energy economy. However, it constitutes a diverse and multi-layered field whose contents and interrelationships are not easily tangible and which lacks a widely accepted definition. Using quantitative bibliometric methods, this article analyzes a dataset of 942 peer-reviewed articles on green finance and their 37,255 references. It provides a structured and objective overview of the nine main research streams, their prevalence over time, high-impact publications, and the degree of information exchange between them. The main streams of green finance research address different levels of analysis, focus on a range of topics from several scientific fields, and arguably evidence little intellectual exchange. Based on the findings, it is suggested how future research on green finance can coalesce across disciplines to increase its productivity and efficiency.
