Abstract:In this study, a model of remineralization patterns was developed to explore the particulate organic matters (POM) decomposition process among marine mesopelagic zone (200 to 1000 m) using data from the South China Sea. The results suggest that three high C/N remineralization patterns are identified at 200 to 400 m, 600 to 700 m and 900 to 1000 m, and two low C/N remineralization patterns are found at 400 to 600 m and 700 to 900 m. These findings indicate three increasing trends and two decreasing trends of C/N ratios in POM, which are further confirmed by measured C/N data in POM from the global ocean. Only the exposed POM has the chance to experience the selective remineralization process, thus the C/N ratios in POM of the remained particles are closely related to selective preservation of specific bio-macromolecules, aggregates, zooplankton community structure at different depths and the microbial loop.

Abstract:Zinc (Zn) is vital to marine organisms. Its active uptake by phytoplankton results in a substantial depletion of dissolved Zn, and Zn bound to particulate organic matter replenishes dissolved Zn in the ocean through remineralization. However, we found that particulate Zn changes from Zn bound to phosphoryls in cells to recalcitrant inorganic pools that include biogenic silica, clays, and iron, manganese, and aluminum oxides in the Southern Ocean water column. The abundances of inorganic pools increase with depth and are the only phases preserved in sediments. Changes in the particulate-Zn speciation influence Zn bioavailability and explain the decoupling of Zn and phosphorus and the correlation of Zn and silicon in the water column. These findings reveal a new dimension to the ocean Zn cycle, implicating an underappreciated role of inorganic Zn particles and their impact on biological productivity.

Abstract:Zinc (Zn) is a bioessential element whose cycling in the marine environment is closely linked to the biological pump. As a vital micronutrient, Zn is depleted in marine surface waters and enriched in deep waters. This has given rise to the longstanding hope that Zn could serve as a robust paleoproductivity proxy. There has been a recent focus on how Zn isotope signatures can be used to track the evolution of the biological pump. However, the factors controlling variations in the sedimentary Zn isotope composition of core-top sediments are debated and these values are influenced by changes in the relative contributions of biological uptake and scavenging processes and by mineral fractionations. In order to provide a new perspective on the Zn isotopic signature of marine core-top sediments and their potential for tracing ocean biogeochemical processes, we developed a sample preparation procedure to extract organically bound Zn (excluding inorganic Zn) without a significant isotope fractionation. We tested five potential organic solvents and found that the isopropanol extraction procedure provided a reproducible and robust result that yielded the highest recovery rate of organically bound Zn without a significant associated isotopic fractionation and appeared to exclude common mineral bound forms of Zn. This extraction procedure was used to analyze the Zn concentrations and isotopic compositions (δ66Zn) of core-top sediment samples from Long Island Sound and the Peruvian continental margin. Our results suggest that the δ66Zn value of organic Zn increases with water depth, thus providing additional support for the finding that burial of isotopically light Zn occurs predominantly in shallow high-productivity sediments. However, we also found that the δ66Zn values of the estimated authigenic Zn component are consistently lighter than those of the organic Zn fraction, consistent with diagenetic (sediment pile) scavenging of organic derived Zn in sulfides imparting an isotope fractionation.

Abstract:AbstractHere, we explore enrichments in paleomarine Zn as recorded by authigenic iron oxides including Precambrian iron formations, ironstones, and Phanerozoic hydrothermal exhalites. This compilation of new and literature‐based iron formation analyses track dissolved Zn abundances and constrain the magnitude of the marine reservoir over geological time. Overall, the iron formation record is characterized by a fairly static range in Zn/Fe ratios throughout the Precambrian, consistent with the shale record (Scottet al., 2013, Nature Geoscience,6, 125–128). When hypothetical partitioning scenarios are applied to this record, paleomarine Zn concentrations within about an order of magnitude of modern are indicated. We couple this examination with new chemical speciation models to interpret the iron formation record. We present two scenarios: first, under all but the most sulfidic conditions and with Zn‐binding organic ligand concentrations similar to modern oceans, the amount of bioavailable Zn remained relatively unchanged through time. Late proliferation of Zn in eukaryotic metallomes has previously been linked to marine Zn biolimitation, but under this scenario the expansion in eukaryotic Zn metallomes may be better linked to biologically intrinsic evolutionary factors. In this case, zinc‘s geochemical and biological evolution may be decoupled and viewed as a function of increasing need for genome regulation and diversification of Zn‐binding transcription factors. In the second scenario, we consider Archean organic ligand complexation in such excess that it may render Zn bioavailability low. However, this is dependent on Zn–organic ligand complexes not being bioavailable, which remains unclear. In this case, although bioavailability may be low, sphalerite precipitation is prevented, thereby maintaining a constant Zn inventory throughout both ferruginous and euxinic conditions. These results provide new perspectives and constraints on potential couplings between the trajectory of biological and marine geochemical coevolution.

Abstract:Hydrogen sulfide is produced by heterotrophic bacteria in anoxic waters and via carbonyl sulfide hydrolysis and phytoplankton emissions under oxic conditions. Apparent losses of dissolved cadmium (dCd) and zinc (dZn) in oxygen minimum zones (OMZs) of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans have been attributed to metal‐sulfide precipitation formed via dissimilatory sulfate reduction. It has also been argued that such a removal process could be a globally important sink for dCd and dZn. However, our studies from the North Pacific OMZ show that dissolved and particulate sulfide concentrations are insufficient to support the removal of dCd via precipitation. In contrast, apparent dCd and dZn deficits in the eastern tropical South Pacific OMZ do reside in the oxycline with particulate sulfide maxima, but they also coincide with the secondary fluorescence maxima, suggesting that removal via sulfide precipitation may be due to a combination of dissimilatory and assimilatory sulfate reduction. Notably, dCd loss via precipitation with sulfide from assimilatory reduction was found in upper oxic waters of the North Pacific. While dissimilatory sulfate reduction may explain local dCd and dZn losses in some OMZs, our evaluation of North Pacific OMZs demonstrates that dCd and dZn losses are unlikely to be a globally relevant sink. Nevertheless, metal sulfide losses due to assimilatory sulfate reduction in surface waters should be considered in future biogeochemical models of oceanic Cd (and perhaps Zn) cycling.

Abstract:Zinc (Zn) isotope compositions in soft mussel tissues help identify internal biological processes and track coastal Zn sources in coastal environments, thus aiding in managing marine metal pollution. This study investigated the seasonal and multi-decadal Zn isotope compositions of blue mussels (genus Mytilus ) from two French coastal sites with contrasting Zn environmental contamination. Concurrently, we characterized the isotope ratios of sediments and plankton samples at each site to understand the associations between organisms and abiotic compartments. Our primary objective was to determine whether these isotope compositions trace long-term anthropogenic emission patterns or if they reflect short-term biological processes. The multi-decadal isotope profiles of mussels in the Loire Estuary and Toulon Bay showed no isotope variations, implying the enduring stability of the relative contributions of natural and anthropogenic Zn sources over time. At seasonal scales, Zn isotope ratios were also constant; hence, isotope effects related to spawning and body growth were not discernible. The multi-compartmental analysis between the sites revealed that Toulon Bay exhibits a remarkably lower Zn isotope ratio across all studied matrices, suggesting the upward transfer of anthropogenic Zn in the food web. In contrast, the Zn isotope variability observed for sediments and organisms from the Loire Estuary fell within the natural baseline of this element. In both sites, adsorptive geogenic material carrying significant amounts of Zn masks the biological isotope signature of plankton, making it difficult to determine whether the Zn isotope ratio in mussels solely reflects the planktonic diet or if it is further modified by biological homeostasis. In summary, Zn isotope ratios in mussels offer promising avenues for delineating source-specific isotope signatures, contingent upon a comprehensive understanding of the isotope fractionation processes associated with the trophic transfer of this element through the plankton.

Different Source Contributions of Bioactive Trace Metals in Sinking Particles in the Northern South China Sea

Abstract:Time-series samples intercepted via three synchronized moored sediment traps, deployed at 1000 m, 2150 m, and 3200 m in the northern South China Sea (NSCS) during June 2009-May 2010, were analyzed to quantify the bioactive trace metal fluxes in sinking particles and investigate their different source contributions. Iron (Fe) primarily originated from lithogenic sources. Manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) exhibited various degrees of enrichment over their continental crustal ratios. Since the sources of bioactive trace metals in sinking particles can be divided into lithogenic, biogenic, and excess fractions, mass conservation calculations were used to quantify the contribution of each source. The results showed that Fe, Mn, and Co had extremely low biogenic proportions (0.1-3.3%), while Ni, Cu, and Zn had higher proportions (2.7-17.3%), with the biogenic fraction decreasing with the depth. Moreover, excess sources accounted for a significant proportion of Mn (68-75%), Co (34-54%), Ni (60-62%), Cu (59-74%), and Zn (56-65%) in sinking particles at the three sampling depths. The excess fractions of Mn, Co, and Cu in sinking particles can be affected by authigenic particles. This is supported by their similar scavenging-type behavior, as observed via the increase in their fluxes and enrichment patterns with the increasing depth. Furthermore, the excess fractions of Ni, Cu, and Zn may have significant contributions from anthropogenic sources. The variability of Fe in sinking particles was mainly controlled via lithogenic matter. Notably, organic matter and opal were found to be pivotal carriers in the export of excess bioactive trace metals (Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu) via the water column, accompanied with the elevated ballast effect of lithogenic matter with the depth. However, the transportation of excess Zn was more complicated due to the intricate processes involved in Zn dynamics. These findings contribute to our understanding of the sources and transport mechanisms of bioactive trace metals in the marine environment.

Abstract:Oxygenated deep-sea pelagic sediments with Fe-Mn−oxide particles represent a key oceanic oxic sink for transition metals in the modern ocean. However, the isotopic composition of authigenic Zn in the pelagic zone remains poorly constrained, which hampers our understanding of the global budget of Zn isotopes. Here, we analyzed the Zn isotopic compositions of two deep-sea pelagic sediment columns collected from the Pacific Ocean. The results show that authigenic Zn in deep-sea sediments is primarily hosted by the Fe-Mn (oxyhydr)oxides. The light Zn isotopic signatures (δ66Zn: −0.02‰ to 0.34‰, n = 42; computed as the per mille deviation of the 66Zn/64Zn ratio from the JMC-Lyon standard) observed in deep-sea sediments are completely different from the previously assumed values of ∼1.0‰ based on the Zn isotopic compositions of Fe-Mn crusts and nodules. Based on this observation (Zn flux of deep-sea sediments = 5.3 × 108 mol yr−1), we propose a new, balanced global budget for Zn isotopes.

Abstract:Dissolved zinc (dZn) is an important micronutrient for phytoplankton in the ocean. In high nutrient low chlorophyll (HNLC) regions like the western Bering Sea basin, Zn deficiency might induce shifts in phytoplankton community species. In this study, we presented the first dZn distribution data in the western Bering Sea and near Kamchatka Strait and investigated the biogeochemical cycles of Zn in these regions. Although dZn and silicate (Si) show similar distribution patterns in the global ocean, there is an excess of dZn relative to Si in the intermediate waters of our study region, similar to that previously observed in the subarctic Pacific. The uptake and subsequent regeneration patterns of dZn, Si, and phosphate (PO 4 ) in the study region reveal that excess dZn in the subarctic Pacific is not derived from biogenic processes, because the uptake and regeneration ratios of dZn to phosphate (PO 4 ) cannot account for the additional dZn supplied. Instead, our analyses indicate that a significant proportion of dZn in the region originates from the non-reductive release from shelf sediments. dZn concentrations were elevated in coastal regions at the same isopycnal where excess dZn was observed in the subarctic Pacific, suggesting that some of these sediment-derived dZn were transported to the subarctic Pacific.

Marine Productivity Variations and Environmental Perturbations Across the Early Triassic Smithian-Spathian Boundary: Insights from Zinc and Carbon Isotopes

Abstract:The biotic recovery following the end Permian mass extinction (EPME) was unstable with repeated environmental crises, each of which was followed by a comparably more hospitable interval for life. The early Triassic Smithian-Spathian boundary (SSB) event represents a conspicuous turnover in the environment, climate, and biotic communities. To explore the causes and consequences of this event we measured zinc and carbon isotopes along with elemental paleoenvironment proxies through the West Pingdingshan section, Chaohu, South China. An abrupt decrease of δ66Zn values, along with the highly negative δ13C values occur in the latest Smithian in Beds 47–50 of the section, are coincident with the bio-crisis, and are ascribed to weak marine productivity and extremely hot climatic conditions. Rapid positive shifts in δ13Corg and δ13Ccarb values and high contents of TOC in Beds 51–52, demonstrate elevated marine productivity associated with a surface seawater cooling event, but also resulted in oxygen-starved conditions lethal to organisms. Marine and terrestrial ecosystems recovered in the early Spathian in Beds 53–57, as evidenced by high values of δ66Zn, δ13C and the absence of framboid pyrite, and low Al content. These characteristics indicate a return to normal marine productivity and oxygenated seawater, and decreased terrestrial sediment input. Our findings propose that marine productivity played an important role in affecting the marine Zn cycling across the SSB and provide a scenario of environmental perturbations in response to temperature changes during the SSB transition.

Abstract:Zinc (Zn) is a key micronutrient used by phytoplankton for carbon (C) acquisition, yet there have been few observations of its influence on natural oceanic phytoplankton populations. In this study, we observed Zn limitation of growth in the natural phytoplankton community of Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica, due to low (~220 μatm) pCO2 conditions, in addition to primary iron (Fe) limitation. Shipboard incubation experiments amended with Zn and Fe resulted in significantly higher chlorophyll a content and dissolved inorganic carbon drawdown compared to Fe addition alone. Zn and Fe response proteins detected in incubation and environmental biomass provided independent verification of algal co-stress for these micronutrients. These observations of Zn limitation under low pCO2 conditions demonstrate Zn can influence coastal primary productivity. Yet, as surface ocean pCO2 rises with continued anthropogenic emissions, the occurrence of Zn/C co-limitation will become rarer, impacting the biogeochemical cycling of Zn and other trace metal micronutrients.

A Pilot Study on Zinc Isotopic Compositions in Shallow‐Water Coral Skeletons

Abstract:Abstract The trace metal element zinc (Zn) participates in coral metabolic processes and therefore accumulates in their skeletons. These metabolic processes are largely controlled by the changes of environment in which they live, so Zn isotopic compositions (δ66Zn) in coral skeletons may possibly serve as potential tracers for climate and environmental changes. In this study, we first reported the δ66Zn in shallow‐water coral skeletons by investigating with monthly resolution δ66Zn values in the skeleton of a modern Porites coral 10AR2 from the Great Barrier Reef of Australia, and the bulk skeletal δ66Zn values of several coral species from the Luhuitou Reef of Hainan Island in the northern South China Sea. Correlations between δ66Zn and other climate and environmental proxies (Sr/Ca, δ18O, and δ13C) and instrumental environmental variables (sea surface temperature, river runoff, and chlorophyll a) are poor, suggesting that the effects of external environmental changes on monthly variations in δ66Zn in coral skeletons are not significant. However, significant interspecific differences in the skeletal δ66Zn of corals growing under identical external environments may suggest the occurrence of biologically controlled δ66Zn fractionation during coral skeletons formation. In addition, the monthly δ66Zn in the 10AR2 coral skeleton roughly decreases with increasing temperature, which is in agreement with the recent finding that δ66Zn in coral tissues and zooxanthellae increases with increasing temperature and can serve as a proxy for thermal stress in corals. We thus suggest that the complicated coral internal biological processes hinder the use of skeletal δ66Zn as a climate and environmental proxy.
Surface ocean biogeochemistry and deep ocean circulation control relationships between nutrient-type trace metals (Cd, Ni, Cu, and Zn) and nutrients in the South Atlantic Ocean near the subtropical front

Abstract:The ocean region along the latitude of 40 o S in the South Atlantic, characterized by enhanced primary productivity, forms a transition zone between the nutrient replete but iron depleted Southern Ocean, and the nitrate and iron depleted Subtropical Gyre. Here, we present distributions of nutrient-type dissolved and particulate trace metals (dTMs and pTMs) including cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) in the South Atlantic from the GEOTRACES GA10 cruises. Phytoplankton uptake, riverine and atmospheric inputs shaped dTM and pTM concentrations in surface waters (dCd 27.8±36.0 pmol kg -1 , n=222; dCu 0.732±0.429 nmol kg -1 , n=222; dNi 3.38±0.52 nmol kg -1 , n=219; dZn 0.332±0.398 nmol kg -1 , n=214). Subsurface nutrients and dTMs (dCd 563±184 pmol kg -1 , n=335; dCu 1.819±0.773 nmol kg -1 , n=334; dNi 6.19±1.06 nmol kg -1 , n=330; dZn 3.71±2.10 nmol kg -1 , n=333) were controlled by the mixing of Antarctic origin waters and North Atlantic Deep Waters (NADW) with negligible contributions from local remineralization. Dissolved and particulate TMs in the Argentine Basin showed elevated concentrations towards the seafloor because of benthic inputs. Direct hydrothermal inputs of dTMs and pTMs to deep waters were not observed along the transect. The Cd-Cu-Zn-phosphate stoichiometries of Antarctic origin waters were set by a combination of dynamic physical circulation and preferential uptake of Cd, Cu, and Zn relative to phosphate in surface waters because of a dominance by diatoms in the Southern Ocean. Water mass mixing subsequently produced convoluted dCu-P and dZn-P relationships and apparent linear dCd-P and dNi-P relationships in the South Atlantic. More importantly, endmember characteristics of Antarctic waters and NADW are largely fixed in their formation regions in high latitude oceans. Therefore, the highly dynamic high latitude oceans are key regions that supply nutrients and TMs at specific ratios to low latitude oceans via the thermohaline circulation. Changes to processes in the high latitude oceans may have consequences for marine primary productivity downstream, and hence the global carbon cycle.

Copper and Zinc Isotope Systematics of Altered Oceanic Crust at Iodp Site 1256 in the Eastern Equatorial Pacific

Abstract:This paper presents the first combined Cu and Zn isotopic study of altered oceanic crust at Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Hole 1256D that penetrates a volcanic section, a lava-dyke transition zone, a sheeted dyke complex, and a plutonic complex. In the volcanic section, all but one rocks have Cu and Zn isotopic compositions similar to fresh mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB), reflecting restricted seawater circulation and low oxygen fugacity. Rocks in the transition zone have MORB-like delta Cu-65 and delta Zn-66, indicating the dominant influence of basalt-derived Cu and Zn during alteration. Rocks in the dyke complex have more variable delta Cu-65 (-0.50-0.90 parts per thousand) and delta Zn-66 (0.19-0.55 parts per thousand) and those in the plutonic complex have delta Cu-65 of -0.43 to 0.20 parts per thousand and delta Zn-66 of 0.21 to 0.41 parts per thousand. The rocks with heavier delta Zn-66 and heavier or lighter d65Cu relative to MORB are characterized by Cu-Zn depletions, low Li/Yb (<1.0) and low delta O-18 (<5 parts per thousand), suggesting that hydrothermal extraction during high temperature alteration of oceanic crust can result in significant Cu and Zn isotope fractionation. Such large Cu and Zn isotopic variations are the results of redox transformation of Cu as well as Cu and Zn isotope fractionation between altered basaltic rocks and dissolved Cu and Zn species in hydrothermal fluids (e.g., [CuCl3](1-), Zn(HS)(4)(2-)). This work is the first to define the distribution of Cu and Zn isotopes in an intact oceanic crust with concentration-weighted averages of delta Cu-65 (0.05 +/- 0.03 parts per thousand) and delta Zn-66 (0.27 +/- 0.01 parts per thousand). The potential implications of these new observations are discussed.
Heavy Metal Distribution and Bioaccumulation Ability in Marine Organisms from Coastal Regions of Hainan and Zhoushan, China.

Abstract:We analyzed the distribution and bioaccumulation of six heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cr, Cd and Hg) in marine organisms, water, and sediments from China's Hainan and Zhoushan coastal regions. In all marine organism, seawater, and sediment samples, Zn and Hg had the highest and lowest concentrations, respectively. Heavy metals in marine organisms varied by region and species, with concentrations being higher in Zhoushan than in Hainan (except for Zn) and in crab than in fish. Marine organisms' ability to digest and eliminate heavy metals (bioaccumulation ability), based on bioaccumulation factors, was significantly higher for heavy metals in seawater than in sediment. Higher sediment background values may explain the higher heavy metal concentrations in crab. Generally, marine organisms' bioaccumulation ability was higher for Cu and Zn and lower for Pb. Findings specific to the coastal environments may be generalizable to other coastal areas in China or worldwide.
Significance of zinc re-absorption in Zn dynamic regulation in marine fish revealed by pharmacokinetic model

Abstract:Zinc (Zn) is an essential but toxic trace element and is widely available in the natural environment. In the present study, we developed a re-absorption physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model based on long-term dietary exposure to gain insights into the physiological mechanisms of uptake, tissue distribution, storage, and excretion of Zn in marine juvenile gilt-head breams Sparus aurata (with stomach). The PBPK model incorporated the kinetic processes of Zn transfer from fish liver to gastrointestinal system and used the Markov Monte Carlo algorithm to estimate the distribution of model parameters. The model fit indicated that the stomach and intestine of fish were key organs in regulating the concentration of Zn entering the internal environment, with excess exogenous Zn (120 mg/kg) being excreted in feces (rate constant of 5.23 d-1). Modeling results also indicated that liver (3.00 d-1), spleen (1.41 d-1) and kidney (0.51 d-1) were the main tissues responding to blood Zn flux by accumulation and detoxification. Fish kidneys exposed to 60 mg/kg and 120 mg/kg Zn had different regenerative capacities, resulting in different detoxification functions. A higher dietary Zn (120 mg/kg) disrupted the intestinal reabsorption process in marine fish. This study showed that exogenous Zn was directly accumulated in organs through the gastrointestinal-hepatic system, which is an important pathways for regulating metal homeostasis in marine fish. The results provided important understanding of the mechanisms of metal regulation and transport in marine fish.
Exploration of natural processes and anthropogenic inputs by Zn isotopes in suspended particulate matter: A case study from the Lancang River in Southwest China

Abstract:River is an important pathway for the biogeochemical cycle of Zn. This study reports Zn concentration and δ 66 Zn composition for suspended particulate matter (SPM) from Lancang River basin in Southwest China, and explore the impact of natural processes and human activities on Zn cycle. The SPM samples have a much higher average Zn content (162 mg kg −1 ) than that of the upper crust (67.0 mg kg −1 ), but it is close to the value of the Pearl River (187 mg kg −1 ). The enrichment factor (EF) values of Zn in SPM range from 1.08 to 6.88, with an average of 2.15, which does not show significant pollution characteristics. The δ 66 Zn values in SPM range from −0.67‰ to +0.63‰, with an average of +0.13‰. The δ 66 Zn values showed positive correlation with Ca/Mg ratios while showed little correlation with Zn contents in SPM. It indicated that anthropogenic sources have limited influence on SPM, and the Zn isotope composition in SPM is more likely to be inherited from the weathered rocks materials and influenced by natural fractionation processes in river water. This result contributes to understanding of the geochemical cycling process of Zn and its environmental effects in water.

Abstract:In the ocean, zinc (Zn) is an important element for biological activity and biogeochemistry. The distribution of dissolved Zn in the global ocean is similar to that of silica (Si). Previous model-based experiments proposed the Southern Ocean hypothesis: high Zn/P uptake ratio by phytoplankton in the Southern Ocean leads to Zn-depleted surface water and this anomaly is transported into the interior ocean associated with mode water formation, resulting in a distribution similar to Si. However, recent observational data from the North Pacific showed that there is decoupling of Zn and Si: the correlation between Zn and Si breaks down in the North Pacific. This study investigates the process of the Zn cycle that causes the decoupling of Zn and Si in the North Pacific using a model. We conducted the model experiment with various Zn uptake speeds in the surface ocean, but it was not easy to reproduce Zn concentrations in the North Pacific, indicating that additional mechanisms are required to produce the decoupling of Zn and Si in the North Pacific. By considering additional Zn sources from the continental shelves of the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea, we found that high Zn concentration and the Zn–Si decoupling in the North Pacific were reproduced, consistent with observational data. Our result suggests that the Zn supply from the coastal regions in the North Pacific has an important role in causing the Zn–Si decoupling.

Abstract:The isotope ratios of zinc ( 66 Zn/ 64 Zn expressed as δ 66 Zn), a vital nutrient, increasingly demonstrate trophic discrimination among vertebrates, making δ 66 Zn a valuable dietary proxy for ecological, archaeological, and palaeontological studies. Given the novelty of the methodology, tissue-diet and tissue-tissue zinc isotope fractionation factors remain poorly understood and have so far only been studied in a few terrestrial mammals. Here, we investigate δ 66 Zn compositions of enameloid, bone, and white muscle of seven artificially-fed pisciculture gilt-head seabreams ( Sparus aurata ) from offshore Israel, in comparison to the Zn isotope composition of their diet. In addition, we also analysed δ 66 Zn values in the same tissues of wild-caught S. aurata , bluespotted seabream ( Pagrus caeruleostictus ) and grey triggerfish ( Balistes capriscus ) caught off the coast of Israel. We determine a tissue-diet δ 66 Zn offset for Sparus aurata of − 0.04 ± 0.09 ‰ (2SD) for bone, − 0.29 ± 0.06 ‰ (2SD) for enameloid, and − 0.45 ± 0.07 ‰ (2SD) for white muscle. Wild-caught fish have much higher among-individual δ 66 Zn variability with values distinct from the pisciculture S. aurata , documenting a much more isotopically heterogeneous diet consumed by the wild individuals. Still, tissue–tissue δ 66 Zn differences in wild-caught individuals are close to those observed in the pisciculture ones with progressively lower δ 66 Zn values in the order bone > enameloid > white muscle. Our results demonstrate predictable tissue-diet and tissue-tissue δ 66 Zn differences among fish hard and soft tissues and can be applied to identify the δ 66 Zn values of dietary input, thereby informing trophic (palaeo)ecological reconstructions.

Zinc isotopic signature in tropical soils: A review

Abstract:The micronutrient cycling in tropical latitudes is an issue of great concern because tropical soils are not only suffering micronutrient deficiency, but also influencing the global cycling of trace metals. With the development of stable isotope techniques, Zn isotopic composition (δ66Zn) has been an powerful tool to interpret the Zn behaviour, signature, and cycling in soils. This review compiles δ66Zn ratios of ten types of soils from both tropical and non-tropical latitudes, to (i) discuss the Zn isotopic signature in tropical soils and at the interfaces of soil-plant-river-ocean, (ii) disclose the Zn mass balance in tropical latitudes, and (iii) provide an implication for the eco-environmental effects of Zn cycling in tropical latitudes. Zinc isotopic signature is constrained by soil constituents. Our review summarized that the precipitation of secondary Fe oxides and organic complexation in the aqueous phases are likely to result in the preferential preservation of light Zn isotopes in tropical soils. The extreme weathering and material leaching of tropical soils can remove large amounts of Zn and thus result in Zn deficiency in tropical latitudes and pose risks to plant growth. The removed Zn is likely to influence the instantaneous riverine δ66Zn heavier than that of the crustal average. However, the modern oceanic δ66Zn will ultimately approach those of the parent materials by mass balance, at large geological timescales. Future direction should be concerned with the isotopic studies on Zn speciation in tropical soils and the association of isotopic ratios with the flux of Zn to quantitatively estimate of the Zn mass balance in tropical regions. The prospect of this review is to help solve the issue of plant micronutrition, as well as riverine and marine bio-availablity.
