Abstract:To start, the potential of combining visual data with data from wearable sensors was highlighted by work published in our September 2020 issue. This approach used stretchable skin-like strain sensors that were made from single-walled carbon nanotubes and could be conformably attached to a person's fingers. By fusing data from these sensors with data from visual images, and with the help of a convolutional neural network, the technique could accurately recognize hand gestures. It was shown that the system could control a quadruped robot via hand gestures, even in the dark. The paper was from Xiaodong Chen and colleagues, and was entitled 'Gesture recognition using a bioinspired learning architecture that integrates visual data with somatosensory data from stretchable sensors' ( Nat. Electron . 3 , 563–570; 2020).
