Abstract:Abstract. In recent decades, the geospatial domain has benefitted from technological advances in sensors, methodologies, and processing tools to expand capabilities in mapping applications. Airborne techniques (LiDAR and aerial photogrammetry) generally provide most of the data used for this purpose. However, despite the relevant accuracy of these technologies and the high spatial resolution of airborne data, updates are not sufficiently regular due to significant flight costs and logistics. New possibilities to fill this information gap have emerged with the advent of Very High Resolution (VHR) optical satellite images in the early 2000s. In addition to the high temporal resolution of the cost-effective datasets and their sub-meter geometric resolutions, the synoptic coverage is an unprecedented opportunity for mapping remote areas, multi-temporal analyses, updating datasets and disaster management. For all these reasons, VHR satellite imagery is clearly a relevant study for National Mapping and Cadastral Agencies (NMCAs). This work, supported by EuroSDR, summarises a series of experimental analyses carried out over diverse landscapes to explore the potential of VHR imagery for large-scale mapping.

Abstract:Remote Sensing is a markable achievement in- last century. High resolution is a vital technol- ogy to digital image characteristics. Especially, in recent 20 years, digital technology promotes the development of spatial information field. As the increasing requirement of people, achieving high resolution images is urgent. For this target, we work from four parts: spatial resolution, ra- diant resolution, spectral resolution, temporal resolution and proposed schemes for each of them with different imaging manners, designed several prototype systems and carried out many experiments to verify their feasibilities.

Abstract:Abstract. The recent developments of passive sensors techniques, that have been able to take advantage of the technological innovations related to sensors technical features, sensor calibration, the use of UAV systems (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), the integration of image matching techniques and SfM (Structure from Motion) algorithms, enable to exploit both thermal and optical data in multi-disciplinary projects. This synergy boost the application of Infrared Thermography (IRT) to new application domains, since the capability to provide thematic information of the analysed objects benefits from the typical advantages of data georeferencing and metric accuracy, being able to compare results investigating different phenomena.This paper presents a research activity in terrestrial and aerial (UAV) applications, aimed at generating photogrammetric products with certified and controlled geometric and thematic accuracy even when the acquisitions of thermal data were not initially designed for the photogrammetric process. The basic principle investigated and pursued is the processing of a photogrammetric block of images, including thermal IR and optical imagery, using the same reference system, which allows the use of co-registration algorithms. Such approach enabled the generation of radiance maps, orthoimagery and 3D models embedding the thermal information of the investigated surfaces, also known as texture mapping; these geospatial dataset are particularly useful in the context of the built Heritage documentation, characterised by complex analyses challenges that a perfect fit for investigations based on interdisciplinary approaches.

Abstract:Abstract. Direct georeferencing uses onboard sensors to measure the position and orientation of the camera during image acquisition for photogrammetric applications. This approach aims to eliminate the use of traditional Ground Control Points (GCPs) in the photogrammetric process in order to reduce the costs and the time of the survey operations. The direct georeferencing technique involves integrating measurements from inertial measurement units (IMUs) and Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) data in order to evaluate the position and attitude of the camera with high accuracy (a few centimeters). In the Built Heritage survey domain, this approach is mainly followed by the employment of UAVs (Uncrewed aerial systems) platforms that are nowadays equipped with highly accurate systems able to evaluate the external parameters for the photogrammetric process. For terrestrial applications, few already achieved tests were performed; moreover, the sensors today available for extracting information from close-range acquisition systems are limited and sometimes under development. To evaluate the possibility offered by these new direct georeferencing tools, a test on the 3D ImageVector (REDcatch GmbH) has been performed. The results and the strategies followed will be presented and analyzed in order to understand better the accuracy and the potentiality of this new promising approach.

Abstract:With the increased availability of very high-resolution satellite imagery, terrain based imaging and participatory sensing, inexpensive platforms, and advanced information and communication technologies, the application of imagery is now ubiquitous, playing an important role in many aspects of life and work today. As a leading organisation in this field, the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) has been devoted to effectively and efficiently obtaining and utilising information from imagery since its foundation in the year 1910. This paper examines the significant challenges currently facing ISPRS and its communities, such as providing high-quality information, enabling advanced geospatial computing, and supporting collaborative problem solving. The state-of-the-art in ISPRS related research and development is reviewed and the trends and topics for future work are identified. By providing an overarching scientific vision and research agenda, we hope to call on and mobilise all ISPRS scientists, practitioners and other stakeholders to continue improving our understanding and capacity on information from imagery and to deliver advanced geospatial knowledge that enables humankind to better deal with the challenges ahead, posed for example by global change, ubiquitous sensing, and a demand for real-time information generation.

Abstract:Historically, geoscience has been a prominent domain for applications of computer vision and pattern recognition. The numerous challenges associated with geoscience-related imaging data, which include poor imaging quality, noise, missing values, lack of precise boundaries defining various geoscience objects and processes, as well as non-stationarity in space and/or time, provide an ideal test bed for advanced computer vision techniques. On the other hand, the developments in pattern recognition, especially with the rapid evolution of powerful graphical processing units (GPUs) and the subsequent deep learning breakthrough, enable valuable computational tools, which can aid geoscientists in important problems, such as land cover mapping, target detection, pattern mining in imaging data, boundary extraction and change detection. In this landscape, classical computer vision approaches, such as active contours, superpixels, or descriptor-guided classification, provide alternatives that remain relevant when domain expert labelling of large sample collections is often not feasible. This issue persists, despite efforts for the standardization of geoscience datasets, such as Microsoft's effort for AI on Earth, or Google Earth. This work covers developments in applications of computer vision and pattern recognition on geoscience-related imaging data, following both pre-deep learning and post-deep learning paradigms. Various imaging modalities are addressed, including: multispectral images, hyperspectral images (HSIs), synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, point clouds obtained from light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors or digital elevation models (DEMs).

Abstract:During the last decade, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) became an indispensable source of information in Earth observation. This has been possible mainly due to the current trend toward higher spatial resolution and novel imaging modes. A major driver for this development has been and still is the airborne SAR technology, which is usually ahead of the capabilities of spaceborne sensors by several years. Today's airborne sensors are capable of delivering high-quality SAR data with decimeter resolution and allow the development of novel approaches in data analysis and information extraction from SAR. In this paper, a review about the abilities and needs of today's very high-resolution airborne SAR sensors is given, based on and summarizing the longtime experience of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) with airborne SAR technology and its applications. A description of the specific requirements of high-resolution airborne data processing is presented, followed by an extensive overview of emerging applications of high-resolution SAR. In many cases, information extraction from high-resolution airborne SAR imagery has achieved a mature level, turning SAR technology more and more into an operational tool. Such abilities, which are today mostly limited to airborne SAR, might become typical in the next generation of spaceborne SAR missions.

We illustrate the importance of high temporal resolution and propose a new method to improve it. Combining with different scene, we analyze the track of moving object and solve motion parameters of target, then construct high temporal resolution series images. Experiment shows that our models can effectively improve temporal resolution.

Abstract:Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a trending topic in many research areas. In recent years, even building, civil, and structural engineering have also started to face with several new techniques and technologies belonging to this field, such as smart algorithms, big data analysis, deep learning practices, etc. This perspective paper collects the last developments on the use of AI in building engineering, highlighting what the authors consider the most stimulating scientific advancements of recent years, with a specific interest in the acquisition and processing of photographic surveys. Specifically, the authors want to focus both on the applications of artificial intelligence in the field of building engineering, as well as on the evolution of recently widespread technological equipment and tools, emphasizing their mutual integration. Therefore, seven macro-categories have been identified where these issues are addressed: photomodeling; thermal imaging; object recognition; inspections assisted by UAVs; FEM and BIM implementation; structural monitoring; and damage identification. For each category, the main new innovations and the leading research perspectives are highlighted. The article closes with a brief discussion of the primary results and a viewpoint for future lines of research.

Abstract:In recent years, China's science and technology have developed rapidly, and the surveying and mapping industry has also made great breakthroughs. Traditional aerospace photogrammetry cannot collect more accurate information from modern surveying and mapping. In recent years, UAV tilt photogrammetry technology has been developed. UAV tilt photogrammetry technology can more realistically reflect the position and appearance of features. Traditional aerospace photogrammetry can only perform vertical data acquisition, but tilt photogrammetry can perform fast and efficient data acquisition from different angles. Not only that, tilt photogrammetry has greatly improved the image matching and measurement technology. This paper analyzes the future development trend and application fields of the development of tilt photogrammetry technology.

Abstract:We discuss the evolution and state-of-the-art of the use of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) in the field of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (PaRS). UAS, Remotely-Piloted Aerial Systems, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles or simply, drones are a hot topic comprising a diverse array of aspects including technology, privacy rights, safety and regulations, and even war and peace. Modern photogrammetry and remote sensing identified the potential of UAS-sourced imagery more than thirty years ago. In the last five years, these two sister disciplines have developed technology and methods that challenge the current aeronautical regulatory framework and their own traditional acquisition and processing methods. Navety and ingenuity have combined off-the-shelf, low-cost equipment with sophisticated computer vision, robotics and geomatic engineering. The results are cm-level resolution and accuracy products that can be generated even with cameras costing a few-hundred euros. In this review article, following a brief historic background and regulatory status analysis, we review the recent unmanned aircraft, sensing, navigation, orientation and general data processing developments for UAS photogrammetry and remote sensing with emphasis on the nano-micro-mini UAS segment.

Abstract:Given its capacity to generate 2-D fine images of observation areas, very high resolution (VHR) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) has become increasingly popular in myriad fields, including remote sensing, geoscience, and surveillance. In this article, we present a comprehensive overview of VHR SAR systems and imaging to highlight the related research and promote further development. First, we provide a summary of VHR SAR applications and summarize the typical airborne and spaceborne systems. Subsequently, a detailed overview is provided to demonstrate the range VHR technologies by introducing dechirp processing, stepped frequency, and microwave photonic. In addition, VHR imaging methods on different platforms, i.e., ideal trajectory, airborne, and spaceborne, are reviewed. Finally, the challenges and prospects of VHR SAR are presented to inform future research directions. This work provides a valuable resource to improve the system design and signal processing of VHR SAR.

The Time-SIFT method : detecting 3-D changes from archival photogrammetric analysis with almost exclusively image information

Abstract:Archival aerial imagery is a source of worldwide very high resolution data for documenting paste 3-D changes. However, external information is required so that accurate 3-D models can be computed from archival aerial imagery. In this research, we propose and test a new method, termed Time-SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform), which allows for computing coherent multi-temporal Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) with almost exclusively image information. This method is based on the invariance properties of the SIFT-like methods which are at the root of the Structure from Motion (SfM) algorithms. On a test site of 170 km2, we applied SfM algorithms to a unique image block with all the images of four different dates covering forty years. We compared this method to more classical methods based on the use of affordable additional data such as ground control points collected in recent orthophotos. We did extensive tests to determine which processing choices were most impacting on the final result. With these tests, we aimed at evaluating the potential of the proposed Time-SIFT method for the detection and mapping of 3-D changes. Our study showed that the Time-SIFT method was the prime criteria that allowed for computing informative DEMs of difference with almost exclusively image information and limited photogrammetric expertise and human intervention. Due to the fact that the proposed Time-SIFT method can be automatically applied with exclusively image information, our results pave the way to a systematic processing of the archival aerial imagery on very large spatio-temporal windows, and should hence greatly help the unlocking of archival aerial imagery for the documenting of past 3-D changes.

Abstract:Abstract. In the field of geomatics, the development of 3D surveying techniques that can produce dense point clouds and high-resolution three-dimensional models has opened the possibility of using these techniques to generate digital replicas of a given asset to be used in contexts of cultural promotion or entertainment.These non-traditional applications have been made easier by the spreading of low-cost but fast surveying techniques, allowing them to be used in contexts or projects with fewer resources. Close-range photogrammetry is nowadays the cheapest, most flexible, and fastest technique that can be used to produce high-resolution and high-quality digital copies of reality. In this paper, we present an application of the Ant3D multi-camera system, a novel photogrammetric device designed for the rapid 3D surveying of sites characterized by poor accessibility and narrow spaces. The paper describes the three-dimensional acquisition of underground tunnels in a hazardous abandoned mining site. The digitalisation work aims to create 3D models to be experienced safely in a virtual- or augmented- reality immersive navigation of the site for cultural promotion. A workflow is proposed to turn raw reality-based 3D models into refined and efficient 3D assets that can be exploited in a game engine. Applications for mobile devices, desktop, and VR headsets, using the produced 3D assets are described.
Gigapixel Imaging and Photogrammetry: Development of a New Long Range Remote Imaging Technique

Abstract:The use of terrestrial remote imaging techniques, specifically LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) and digital stereo-photogrammetry, are widely proven and accepted for the mapping of geological structure and monitoring of mass movements. The use of such technologies can be limited, however: LiDAR generally by the cost of acquisition, and stereo-photogrammetry by the tradeoff between possible resolution within the scene versus the spatial extent of the coverage. The objective of this research is to test a hybrid gigapixel photogrammetry method, and investigate optimal equipment configurations for use in mountainous terrain. The scope of the work included field testing at variable ranges, angles, resolutions, and in variable geological and climatologically settings. Original field work was carried out in Canada to test various lenses and cameras, and detailed field mapping excursions were conducted in Norway. The key findings of the research are example data generated by gigapixel photogrammetry, a detailed discussion on optimal photography equipment for gigapixel imaging, and implementations of the imaging possibilities for rockfall mapping. This paper represents a discussion about a new terrestrial 3-dimensional imaging technique. The findings of this research will directly benefit natural hazard mapping programs in which rockfall potential must be recorded and the use of standard 3-dimensional imaging techniques cannot be applied.

Abstract:Image segmentation and geographic object-based image analysis (GEOBIA) were proposed around the turn of the century as a means to analyze high-spatial-resolution remote sensing images. Since then, object-based approaches have been used to analyze a wide range of images for numerous applications. In this Editorial, we present some highlights of image segmentation and GEOBIA research from the last two years (2018–2019), including a Special Issue published in the journal Remote Sensing. As a final contribution of this special issue, we have shared the views of 45 other researchers (corresponding authors of published papers on GEOBIA in 2018–2019) on the current state and future priorities of this field, gathered through an online survey. Most researchers surveyed acknowledged that image segmentation/GEOBIA approaches have achieved a high level of maturity, although the need for more free user-friendly software and tools, further automation, better integration with new machine-learning approaches (including deep learning), and more suitable accuracy assessment methods was frequently pointed out.
Multitemporal SAR-to-Optical Image Translation Using Pix2Pix With Application to Vegetation Monitoring

Abstract:Information representation enhancement in synthetic aperture radar images is highly debated in remote sensing literature. In the past, the most credited solutions were based on traditional image processing integrating microwave scattering principles. More recently, neural network-based solutions conquered the scene, allowing for the introduction of representations obtained via domain translation. In this context, generative adversarial networks rule the roost. However, after an initial improvement, the performance of the newly developed solutions reached a plateau. This paper proposes a change of perspective, moving the translation problem from the architecture to input data and training modality. It will be shown that state-of-the-art multitemporal synthetic aperture radar processing provides products that, due to their enhanced texture and colorimetric attributes, appear more similar to their optical correspondent. Moreover, training constrained by spatial and temporal features is beneficial to increase the phenomenological correspondence between the radar reflectivity function and the terrain reflectance. As a result, the obtained translated products show a significant increase of the standard image quality parameters. Finally, the exploitability of multimodal products is demonstrated with an application concerning the estimation of the normalized difference vegetation index, which shows the comparability of the synthetic index with that calculated from native optical data.

THE EUROSDR TIME BENCHMARK FOR HISTORICAL AERIAL IMAGES

Abstract:Abstract. Automatic photogrammetric processing of historical (or archival) aerial photos is still a challenging task, particularly in cases of missing ancillary information, low radiometric and image quality, limited stereo coverage or large temporal span. However, with recent advances in photogrammetry and Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms for image processing and interpretation, an increasing number of applications are now feasible. The article presents the TIME (hisTorical aerIal iMagEs) benchmark (https://time.fbk.eu/), promoted by EuroSDR to explore the potential of historical aerial images. Realized in collaboration with various European NMCAs, the benchmark has garnered aerial image blocks and time series imagery captured since the 1950s. To support the photogrammetric processing of the digitized photos, ancillary data are supplied with available information about flight missions, taking cameras, and ground control points (GCPs). Several diverse investigations have been undertaken with the benchmark datasets, all captured over historical urban areas or landscapes. The paper describes the benchmark datasets and some potential research topics, presenting several tests and analyses realized with the collated and shared data.

Abstract:The past decade has seen an explosive increase in the number of peer reviewed papers reporting new scientific findings in geomorphology (including fans, channels, floodplains and landscape evolution), geologic mapping, tectonics and faulting, coastal processes, lava flows, hydrology (especially snow and runoff routing), glaciers and geo-archaeology. A common genesis of such findings is often newly available decimeter resolution 'bare Earth' geodetic images, derived from airborne laser swath mapping, a.k.a. airborne LiDAR, observations. In this paper we trace nearly a half century of advances in geodetic science made possible by space age technology, such as the invention of short-pulse-length high-pulse-rate lasers, solid state inertial measurement units, chip-based high speed electronics and the GPS satellite navigation system, that today make it possible to map hundreds of square kilometers of terrain in hours, even in areas covered with dense vegetation or shallow water. To illustrate the impact of the LiDAR observations we present examples of geodetic images that are not only stunning to the eye, but help researchers to develop quantitative models explaining how terrain evolved to its present form, and how it will likely change with time. Airborne LiDAR technology continues to develop quickly, promising ever more scientific discoveries in the years ahead.
