Abstract:Over the past few decades, China has faced significant environmental challenges; therefore, it has been striving to raise the proportion of renewable energy in its entire energy portfolio to confront emerging environmental challenges. However, compared to fossil fuels, the use of renewable energy (REN) remains relatively low. Although some studies have tried to investigate the factors of renewable energy consumption in China and other countries around the globe as far as we have analyzed no study has yet evaluated the economic drivers of renewable energy consumption particularly in China. Considering this, the study explores the potential effects of trade (TR), tourism (TOU), foreign direct investment (FDI), and inflation (CPI) on renewable energy consumption (REN) in China. We utilized data over time from 1990 to 2021. Additionally, the research employs novel wavelet quantile correlation (WQC) and augmented ARDL (AARDL) techniques. The AARDL approach confirms the cointegration between the considered indicators. The novel WQC approach shows that CPI and TR deter REN consumption throughout the quantiles and time horizon. Additionally, in every quantile, FDI increases REN over the long term while decreasing it over the medium and short terms. Conversely, in the medium and short-term, TOU increases REN, but in the long term, it decreases REN across the quantiles. Based on the inferences drawn from empirical analysis, extensive policy recommendations have also been proposed at the end of the study. It deals with controlling the negative impact of trade and inflation, making tourism and FDI generative in the short run and also in the long run to increase the consumption of renewable energy in China. Hence, the novelty of the paper lies in investigating the major macroeconomic variable affecting the deployment of renewable energy consumption in China with the help of novel wavelet quantile correlation (WQC) and augmented ARDL (AARDL) techniques. In the last section of the study, limitations and future directions also have been added. To put it briefly, the study will help China come closer to achieving SDG 07 relating to affordable green energy, SDG 09 dealing with industry, innovation, and infrastructure, SDG 12 making sure of responsible consumption and production, SDG 13 working for climate action, and SDG 15 considering biodiversity and land conservation.
