Abstract:Background: Despite the ubiquity of adolescent screen use, there are limited longitudinal studies that examine the prospective relationships between screen time and child behavioral problems in a large, diverse nationwide sample of adolescents in the United States, which was the objective of the current study. Methods: We analyzed cohort data of 9,538 adolescents (9-10 years at baseline in 2016-2018) with two years of follow-up from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study. We used mixed-effects models to analyze associations between baseline self-reported screen time and parent-reported mental health symptoms using the Child Behavior Checklist, with random effects adjusted for age, sex, race/ethnicity, household income, parent education, and study site. We tested for effect modification by sex and race/ethnicity. Results: The sample was 48.8% female and racially/ethnically diverse (47.6% racial/ethnic minority). Higher total screen time was associated with all mental health symptoms in adjusted models, and the association was strongest for depressive (B = 0.10, 95% CI 0.06, 0.13, p < 0.001), conduct (B = 0.07, 95% CI 0.03, 0.10, p < 0.001), somatic (B = 0.06, 95% CI 0.01, 0.11, p = 0.026), and attention-deficit/hyperactivity symptoms (B = 0.06, 95% CI 0.01, 0.10, p = 0.013). The specific screen types with the greatest associations with depressive symptoms included video chat, texting, videos, and video games. The association between screen time and depressive, attention-deficit/hyperactivity, and oppositional defiant symptoms was stronger among White compared to Black adolescents. The association between screen time and depressive symptoms was stronger among White compared to Asian adolescents. Conclusions: Screen time is prospectively associated with a range of mental health symptoms, especially depressive symptoms, though effect sizes are small. Video chat, texting, videos, and video games were the screen types with the greatest associations with depressive symptoms. Future research should examine potential mechanisms linking screen use with child behavior problems.

Abstract:The popularization of the use of electronic has become a global trend, and children are exposed to devices at younger ages. A large proportion of children and adolescents spend on screen time more than 2 h which is recommended in most guidelines. The paper reviews possible effects of screen time on physical and mental health, as well as mental disorders in children and adolescents. It is found that excessive screen time showed negative impacts on mental health, including depression, anxiety, mood disorder, social adaptational problems, behavioral disorders, self-injurious behaviors, and health risk behaviors. Much attention has been paid on the association between excessive screen time and mental health of children and adolescents, while possible mechanisms and influencing factors are lacking. Effective intervention studies are needed to provide a basis for child and adolescent health promotion.

Abstract:Introduction Screen media serves an essential role in adolescents' lives, posing growth opportunities and mental health challenges. Family plays a crucial role in mitigating these challenges. This systematic review offers a comprehensive analysis of the family factors related to adolescent screen media use and mental health. Methods A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Scopus, and Embase, adhering to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses guidelines using the following inclusion criteria: English, peer‐reviewed, observational design, and published since 2013; adolescent samples aged 10–17 years; and examining screen media use, family factors, and internalizing problems. The role of family factors as predictors, moderators, and mediators was also examined. Results Of the 3587 records, 32 met the inclusion criteria. These studies, primarily cross‐sectional, presented a global perspective of 14 countries. A heterogeneous range of family factors, screen media use, and mental health outcomes were examined, revealing significant associations between elevated screen media use and internalizing problems. Positive family processes and democratic media‐specific parenting mitigate such association. A few studies underscored family socioeconomic status (SES), noting elevated screen media use and mental health risks among adolescents in families of low SES. Conclusions Accumulating evidence supports the important role of positive family contexts in fostering balanced screen media use and mental health in adolescents, accentuating the need for professional screening and education to promote positive screen media use among adolescents and families. Further research requires refinement in measurement and methodology to better capture the intricate relationship between family dynamics, screen media use, and adolescent mental health.

Abstract:Social media has been inseparably linked to the daily lives of adolescents for several decades. In social and scientific discourse, we often hear that they are considered one of the significant factors responsible for the observed increase in mental health problems among young people in recent decades. Therefore, understanding the impact of these media on the mental well-being of young individuals has become a priority. For this purpose, a systematic review of research on the relationship between adolescents' use of social media and their mental health was conducted. The systematic review was carried out following the PRISMA standards. Its aim was to identify all studies exploring the association between adolescents' engagement in social media use and the state of their mental health, specifically targeting individuals aged 12-18 years. The EBSCOhost search engine was employed for this purpose, and databases such as Academic Search Ultimate, Education Source Ultimate, Applied Science & Technology Source Ultimate, Medline, Eric, and APA PsycArticle were searched from May to June 2023, aiming to identify studies published between 2013 and 2023. A total of 25 articles were identified from 16,787 records and subjected to evaluation. The results presented in these articles did not provide clear evidence for a linear, strong, and positive association between adolescents' use of social media and the occurrence of mental health problems. The majority of the evaluated research projects had several limitations, therefore it seems justified to conduct further studies with significantly improved measurement procedures, which could yield valuable and clinically relevant data on the relationship between social media use and the mental health of young individuals.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction In light of growing concerns about an increasingly digital adolescence, the academic field investigating how digital technologies affect adolescents’ psychological well-being is growing rapidly. In the last years, much research has amassed, and this has been summarised in over 80 systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Materials and Methods Systematic reviews, meta-analyses and key studies are reviewed to provide insights into the state of current research linking digital technology and social media use to well-being; possible future directions and improvements are discussed. Results When examining the reviews, it becomes evident that the research field is dominated by cross-sectional work that is generally of a low quality standard. While research has highlighted the importance of differentiating between different types of digital technology use many studies do not consider such necessary nuances. These limitations aside, the association between digital technology use, or social media use in particular, and psychological well-being is—on average—negative but very small. Furthermore, the direction of the link between digital technology use and well-being is still unclear: effects have been found to exist in both directions and there has been little work done to rule out potential confounders. Conclusions Reviewing the last decade of reviews in the area, it is evident that the research field needs to refocus on improving transparency, interpreting effect sizes and changing measurement. It also needs to show a greater appreciation for the individual differences that will inherently shape each adolescent’s reaction to digital technologies.

Abstract:Emerging evidence suggests that screen-based activities are associated with self-harm and suicidal behaviors. This study aimed to examine these associations among young people through a meta-analysis. We systematically searched EBSCO pshyARTICLES, MEDLINE (via PubMed), EMBASE, and Web of Science from their inception to April 1, 2022, and updated on May 1, 2024. Longitudinal studies reporting the association between various screen-based activities and subsequent self-harm and suicidal behavior in young people aged 10 to 24 were included. Nineteen longitudinal studies were included in the qualitative synthesis, and 13 studies comprising 43,489 young people were included in the meta-analysis, revealing that total screen use is significantly associated with the risks of self-harm and suicidal behaviors. Cyberbullying victimization was also related to these adverse outcomes. Subgroup analyses indicated that social media use and problematic screen use are significant risk factors for self-harm and suicidal behaviors. Study quality was appraised using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale, and potential publication bias was deemed unlikely to affect the results significantly. These findings suggest that screen-based activities should be considered in the management and intervention strategies for self-harm and suicidal behaviors in young people.

Abstract:Social media has experienced significant growth over the past twenty years and has facilitated online communication. With 4.95 billion global users as of October 2023, it has become an important aspect of everyday life, with a third of the global population using at least one app. Using a systematic literature review methodology, this study explores screening methods used to measure the impact of social media and its impact on adolescent psychological well-being. This study was conducted according to the systematic review guidelines proposed in the PRISMA statement. A total of 948 studies published between 2019 and 2023 on the Google Scholar and Scopus databases were identified, but only 9 articles met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. Cross-sectional studies have shown a higher correlation between excessive social media use and depression among girls aged 13-15 years. In addition, the results of the study also found that the use of social media can cause anxiety, depression, and loneliness among adolescents.
An umbrella review of the benefits and risks associated with youths' interactions with electronic screens

Abstract:The influence of electronic screens on the health of children and adolescents and their education is not well understood. In this prospectively registered umbrella review (PROSPERO identifier CRD42017076051 ), we harmonized effects from 102 meta-analyses (2,451 primary studies; 1,937,501 participants) of screen time and outcomes. In total, 43 effects from 32 meta-analyses met our criteria for statistical certainty. Meta-analyses of associations between screen use and outcomes showed small-to-moderate effects (range: r = -0.14 to 0.33). In education, results were mixed; for example, screen use was negatively associated with literacy (r = -0.14, 95% confidence interval (CI) = -0.20 to -0.09, P ≤ 0.001, k = 38, N = 18,318), but this effect was positive when parents watched with their children (r = 0.15, 95% CI = 0.02 to 0.28, P = 0.028, k = 12, N = 6,083). In health, we found evidence for several small negative associations; for example, social media was associated with depression (r = 0.12, 95% CI = 0.05 to 0.19, P ≤ 0.001, k = 12, N = 93,740). Limitations of our review include the limited number of studies for each outcome, medium-to-high risk of bias in 95 out of 102 included meta-analyses and high heterogeneity (17 out of 22 in education and 20 out of 21 in health with I2 > 50%). We recommend that caregivers and policymakers carefully weigh the evidence for potential harms and benefits of specific types of screen use.

Abstract:Background Technology is ever evolving, with more and more diverse activities becoming possible on screen-based devices. However, participating in a heavy screen-based lifestyle may come at a cost. Our hypothesis was that problematic social media use increased the prevalence of mental health outcomes. Objective This study seeks to systematically examine problematic social media use in youth and its association with symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Methods A systematic search was conducted to identify studies in adolescents and young adults, using the databases Engineering Village, Psycinfo, Pubmed, and Web of Science. A total of 18 studies were identified, with a total of 9269 participants in our review and included in the meta-analysis. Results Our metaregression shows moderate but statistically significant correlations between problematic social media use and depression (r=0.273, P<.001), anxiety (r=0.348, P<.001), and stress (r=0.313, P<.001). We did not find evidence of heterogeneity of these summary correlations by age, gender, or year of publication. Conclusions This study provides further evidence of the association between problematic social media use and negative mental health among adolescents and young adults and supports future research to focus on the underlying mechanisms of problematic use of social media. Is social media screen time really associated with poor adolescent mental health? A time use diary study

Abstract:Background: There is increasing concern regarding the potential impact of social media use on the mental health of young people. Previous research has relied heavily on retrospective accounts of social media screen-time. Yet recent evidence suggests that such self-report measures are unreliable, correlating poorly with more objective measures of social media use. In principle, time use diaries provide a less biased measure of social media use. Methods: We analysed cross-sectional data from the Millennium Cohort Study to explore associations between social media screen-time as recorded in time use diaries (TUD) and key mental health outcomes - self-harm in the past year, depressive symptoms (Short Mood and Feelings Questionnaire), self-esteem (shortened Rosenberg scale) - in adolescence. Social media TUD data were available for 4,032 participants (25.4% aged 13; 73.5% aged 14; 1.1% aged 15). Results: Following adjustment for confounders, a greater amount of time spent on social media was associated with an increased risk of self-harm (adjusted OR per 30-minute increase in weekday use: 1.13, 95%CI 1.06 to 1.21) and depression (adjusted B ==0.36, 95%CI 0.22 to 0.50) and lower levels of self-esteem (adjusted B = -0.12, 95%CI -0.20 to -0.04) in females. Findings were similar for weekday and weekend use. Limitations: The cross-sectional nature of the data limits inference in relation to the causal direction of these associations. Conclusions: Future research should examine the direction of the associations with self-harm and other mental health outcomes and explore gender differences in how adolescents engage with social media as well as how much time they spend online.

Abstract:Aim High screen time and smartphone multitasking are ever-increasing phenomena among children and adolescents, which cause growing concern regarding potential impacts on mental health. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between weekday/weekend screen time, smartphone multitasking, and mental health. Subject and methods A total of 4024 students free of certain physical disease and mental disorders (aged 11–23 years) participated in this cross-sectional study. The Brief Instrument on Psychological Health of Youths (BIOPHY) was administered to assess psychological health. Apart from screen time, college students were requested to complete questionnaires on smartphone multitasking. Logistic regression analyses were used to examine the relationship between screen time/different types of smartphone multitasking activities and mental health. Results Of the participants, 29.52% and 66.40% were classified as high screen time (>2 h/d) on weekdays and weekends, respectively, and 14.34% exhibited mental health problems. High screen time (versus ≤2 h/d) was significantly associated with higher odds of having mental health problems after adjusting for confounders. Furthermore, the effects were larger for weekdays ( OR = 1.71; 95% CI 1.36–2.15) compared to weekends ( OR = 1.32; 95% CI 1.07–1.61). There was also a trend toward significance for more frequent smartphone multitasking (including nonmedia, cross-media, and single-device multitasking) to be associated with a higher prevalence of mental health problems for college students. Conclusion Arranging screen time reasonably and understanding smartphone multitasking correctly may be important for preventing psychological health problems for children and adolescents.

Abstract:Adolescents are spending an increasing amount of their time online and connected to each other via digital technologies. Mobile device ownership and social media usage have reached unprecedented levels, and concerns have been raised that this constant connectivity is harming adolescents' mental health. This review synthesized data from three sources: (a) narrative reviews and meta-analyses conducted between 2014 and 2019, (b) large-scale preregistered cohort studies and (c) intensive longitudinal and ecological momentary assessment studies, to summarize what is known about linkages between digital technology usage and adolescent mental health, with a specific focus on depression and anxiety. The review highlights that most research to date has been correlational, focused on adults versus adolescents, and has generated a mix of often conflicting small positive, negative and null associations. The most recent and rigorous large-scale preregistered studies report small associations between the amount of daily digital technology usage and adolescents' well-being that do not offer a way of distinguishing cause from effect and, as estimated, are unlikely to be of clinical or practical significance. Implications for improving future research and for supporting adolescents' mental health in the digital age are discussed.

Abstract:Adolescents increasingly find it difficult to picture their lives without social media. Practitioners need to be able to assess risk, and social media may be a new component to consider. Although there is limited empirical evidence to support the claim, the perception of the link between social media and mental health is heavily influenced by teenage and professional perspectives. Privacy concerns, cyberbullying, and bad effects on schooling and mental health are all risks associated with this population's usage of social media. However, ethical social media use can expand opportunities for connection and conversation, as well as boost self-esteem, promote health, and gain access to critical medical information. Despite mounting evidence of social media's negative effects on adolescent mental health, there is still a scarcity of empirical research on how teens comprehend social media, particularly as a body of wisdom, or how they might employ wider modern media discourses to express themselves. Youth use cell phones and other forms of media in large numbers, resulting in chronic sleep loss, which has a negative influence on cognitive ability, school performance, and socio-emotional functioning. According to data from several cross-sectional, longitudinal, and empirical research, smartphone and social media use among teenagers relates to an increase in mental distress, self-harming behaviors, and suicidality. Clinicians can work with young people and their families to reduce the hazards of social media and smartphone usage by using open, nonjudgmental, and developmentally appropriate tactics, including education and practical problem-solving.

Abstract:Screen Dependency Disorder (SSD) arises from the uncontrolled excessive utilization of electronic devices and the internet, resulting in psychological well-being disorders. Despite the recognized impact of social media on adolescents’ psychological well-being, insufficient comprehensive research has been conducted on this issue. Hence, this paper seeks to analyze the current literature regarding the adverse effects of social media usage on adolescent psychological well-being, particularly emphasizing the perspective of screen dependency disorder (SSD). The study's results found that parental knowledge and control affect adolescent screen time. This article suggests that a key aspect of promoting healthy screen time habits for adolescents is setting clear boundaries and limits. Parents can establish rules around when and how long their adolescents are allowed to use screens, as well as what types of content are appropriate.

Abstract:During the last decade, a multitude of epidemiological studies with different designs have been published assessing the association between the use of digital media and psychological well-being, including the incidence of mental disorders and suicidal behaviours. Particularly, available research has very often focused on smartphone use in teenagers, with highly addictive potential, coining the term 'problematic smartphone use' and developing specific scales to measure the addictive or problematic use of smartphones. Available studies, despite some methodological limitations and gaps in knowledge, suggest that higher screen time is associated with impaired psychological well-being, lower self-esteem, higher levels of body dissatisfaction, higher incidence of eating disorders, poorer sleeping outcomes and higher odds of depressive symptoms in adolescents. Moreover, a significant association has also been found between screen time and higher suicide risk. Finally, problematic pornography has been shown to be highly prevalent and it is a strong cause of concern to many public health departments and national governments because it might be eventually associated with aggressive sexual behaviours.
