Abstract:The rational recycling of agricultural waste improves soil productivity and environmental health and plays a vital role in crop growth and agricultural sustainability. In this study, straw fermenting fertilizer was obtained by high-temperature fermentation of crop straw (maize and soybean), which was used to improve rapeseed stem lodging resistance and yield, to elucidate the physiological mechanism of improving the lodging resistance of stems with straw-fermented fertilizers. Two different rapeseed varieties, lodging-resistant (Jiayou) and lodging-susceptible (Chuanyou), were selected based on previous experiments and sown in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Four fertilization treatments, local farmers' N practice (150 kg ha −1 ) (CK), CK + straw-fermented fertilizer (500 kg ha −1 ) (OF1), CK + straw-fermented fertilizer (800 kg ha −1 ) (OF2), and CK + straw-fermented fertilizer (1100 kg ha −1 ) (OF3), were used in the field experiment. Our results showed that application of straw-fermented fertilizer increased the photosynthetic parameters of rapeseed and accumulated more lignin by increasing the activities of key enzymes of lignin synthesis (PAL, 4CL, CAD, and POD). Straw-fermented fertilizer promoted the accumulation of three types of lignin monomers (S, G, and S) The S- and G-type lignin monomers were significantly positively correlated with the stem strength. In addition, straw-fermented fertilizer also has a positive effect on the internal organizational structure of culms. Both the improvement of lignin content and the improvement of structural properties of culms together improve the lodging resistance capacity of rapeseed. Straw-fermented fertilizer application increased the yield of both rapeseed varieties by 4.7, 10.8, and 13.3% under OF1, OF2, and OF3 treatments compared to the CK. A non-significance difference was observed between OF2 and OF3 treatments. The application of straw-fermented fertilizer (800 kg ha −1 ) OF2 can be used as the recommended dose to improve the lodging resistance of rapeseed stalks.
