Abstract:Fractals, Ahead of Print. Fractal geometry plays an important role in the description of the characteristics of nature. Local fractional calculus, a new branch of mathematics, is used to handle the non-differentiable problems in mathematical physics and engineering sciences. The local fractional inequalities, local fractional ODEs and local fractional PDEs via local fractional calculus are studied. Fractional calculus is also considered to express the fractal behaviors of the functions, which have fractal dimensions. The interesting problems from fractional calculus and fractals are reported. With the scaling law, the scaling-law vector calculus via scaling-law calculus is suggested in detail. Some special functions related to the classical, fractional, and power-law calculus are also presented to express the Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts function, Mittag-Leffler function and Weierstrass–Mandelbrot function. They have a relation to the ODEs, PDEs, fractional ODEs and fractional PDEs in real-world problems. Theory of the scaling-law series via Kohlrausch–Williams–Watts function is suggested to handle real-world problems. The hypothesis for the tempered Xi function is proposed as the Fractals Challenge, which is a new challenge in the field of mathematics. The typical applications of fractal geometry are proposed in real-world problems.

Abstract:Wavelet transforms originated in geophysics in the early 1980s for the analysis of seismic signals. Since then, significant mathematical advances in wavelet theory have enabled a suite of applications in diverse fields. In geophysics the power of wavelets for analysis of nonstationary processes that contain multiscale features, detection of singularities, analysis of transient phenomena, fractal and multifractal processes, and signal compression is now being exploited for the study of several processes including space‐time precipitation, remotely sensed hydrologic fluxes, atmospheric turbulence, canopy cover, laud surface topography, seafloor bathymetry, and ocean wind waves. It is anticipated that in the near future, significant further advances in understanding and modeling geophysical processes will result from the use of wavelet analysis. In this paper we review the basic properties of wavelets that make them such an attractive and powerful tool for geophysical applications. We discuss continuous, discrete, orthogonal wavelets and wavelet packets and present applications to geophysical processes.

Abstract:Fractals, Ahead of Print. The fractional nonlinear generalized [math]-dimensional Chaffee–Infante (FGCI) equation is a nonlinear evolution equation that governs the propagation of waves in dispersive media, exhibiting both dissipative and dispersive effects. It finds applications in various fields such as fluid mechanics, plasma physics, and nonlinear optics, where the interplay between nonlinearity, dispersion, and dissipation plays a crucial role in determining the dynamics of the system. This study aims to obtain analytical and numerical solutions for the FGCI equation, which is a generalization of the Chaffee–Infante equation. The analytical approach employed is the Khater II (Khat II) method, an efficient technique for constructing approximate analytical solutions to nonlinear fractional differential equations. Additionally, He's variational iteration (HVI) method is implemented as a numerical scheme to validate the accuracy of the analytical solutions obtained from the Khat II method. The results obtained through these methods demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed techniques in solving the FGCI equation and provide valuable insights into the dynamics of wave propagation phenomena governed by the equation. The significance of this study lies in its contribution to the understanding of nonlinear wave propagation phenomena and the development of analytical and numerical techniques for solving fractional differential equations. The novelty of the research lies in the application of the Khat II method to the FGCI equation, which has not been previously explored, and the validation of the analytical solutions through the HVI method. The study is conducted in the field of applied mathematics, with a focus on nonlinear fractional differential equations and their applications in various physical systems.

Abstract:Wavelet fractal technology (WFT) is proposed according to the unity that possesses multiscale decompositions and self-similarity in both wavelet transform and fractal theory. In order to overcome disadvantage of the general method calculating box dimension (BD) of discrete signals, an improved algorithm of BD is given. An empirical formula is derived for choosing the scale-invariant region of periodic or quasi-periodic signals. This technology has been applied successfully to detect looseness fault in the bearing bushing of a turbo-generator set. It is shown that WFT can provide a new effective method to reveal nonstationary fault of mechanical equipment.

Abstract:Paradigms of nonlinear science may suggest that it is "the study of every single phenomenon" due to its interdisciplinary nature, which is a challenge requiring to be addressed by generating a systematic mathematical framework where the complexity of natural phenomena hints the requirement of identifying their commonalties and classifying their various manifestations in different nonlinear systems. Studying such common properties, concepts or paradigms can enable one to gain insight into nonlinear problems, their essence and consequences in a broad range of disciplines all forthwith. Fractional calculus manifests unforeseeable and hidden variations and enables integration and differentiation, with the solutions to be approximated by numerical methods along with modeling and predicting the dynamics of multiphysics, multiscale and physical systems. Neural Networks, consisting of hidden layers with nonlinear functions, are also considerably employed owing to their versatile and efficient characteristics in classification problems as well as their sophisticated neural network architectures, which make them capable of tackling complicated governing partial differential equation problems. Furthermore, partial differential equations are used to provide comprehensive and accurate models for many scientific phenomena owing to the advancements of data gathering and machine learning techniques which have raised opportunities for data-driven identification of governing equations derived from experimentally observed data. While many problems are solvable, efforts are needed to respond to the remaining open questions in fields ranging from mathematics, physics, biology, epidemiology, chemistry, engineering, social sciences to applied sciences. Our special issue provides a collection of recent research focusing on the advances in theory, methodology and applications of fractals, fractional calculus, fractional differential equations, differential equations, delay differential equations, chaos, bifurcation, stability, sensitivity, machine learning, quantum machine learning, and so forth to expound advanced fractional calculus, differential equations and neural networks with detailed analyses, models, simulations, data-driven approaches and numerical computations.

Abstract:Fractals, Ahead of Print. In ocean engineering, the long- and short-wave interaction system represents a crucial nonlinear evolution equation that elucidates the resonant interaction phenomenon between ocean waves. In this study, we describe the fractional long and short-wave interaction (FLSWI) system employing the M-truncated derivative. Subsequently, we employ the extended fractional [math] and the fractional [math] methods to address the FLSWI system. These two approaches yields novel and intriguing soliton solutions. To further elucidate the derived soliton solutions, three-dimensional visualizations are constructed and analyzed.

Abstract:As every engineering student knows, any signal can be portrayed as an overlay of sinusoidal waveforms of assorted frequencies. But while classical analysis copes superbly with naturally occurring sinusoidal behavior-the kind seen in speech signals-it is ill-suited to representing signals with discontinuities, such as the edges of features in images. Latterly, another powerful concept has swept applied mathematics and engineering research: wavelet analysis. In contrast to a Fourier sinusoid, which oscillates forever, a wavelet is localized in time-it lasts for only a few cycles. Like Fourier analysis, however, wavelet analysis uses an algorithm to decompose a signal into simpler elements. Here, the authors describe how localized waveforms are powerful building blocks for signal analysis and rapid prototyping-and how they are now available in software toolkits.
