Abstract:Organisms have fine spatial structures and can capture heavy metals with high selectivity and affinity. Inspired by the spatial structure of a super uranyl-binding protein (SUP), we link amidoxime groups with glutamic acid, a basic unit of organism, to introduce synergistic effects enabled by multiple functional groups for selective uranyl adsorption. The prepared sorbent is characterized by FT-IR, SEM and XPS, which proves the successful grafting of glutamic acid towards amidoxime groups. We investigate the influence of initial solution pH, adsorption time, initial uranyl concentration and ionic strength on the uranyl adsorption. The optimum adsorption condition is established. The study shows that the uranyl adsorption by the glutamic acid-modified poly(amidoxime) fiber can be described by a pseudo-second order kinetic model and the equilibrium adsorption capacity is well fitted by using Langmuir and D-R models. The material's uranyl adsorption in simulated seawater is 5.80 mg·g−1, 9 times as much as its VO2+ adsorption, indicating that the material has fine adsorption selectivity for uranyl. Besides, the adsorption-desorption study shows that the material can be used for at least 3 times. Therefore, the glutamic acid-modified amidoxime material is a potential sorbent for selective uranyl adsorption from seawater.
