What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore the issues of bridge safety assessment, maintenance, monitoring, and whole - life - cycle performance management. Specifically, the paper gathers the research progress at the 11th International Conference on Bridge Maintenance, Safety and Management (IABMAS 2022), covering multiple aspects such as bridge safety, maintenance, management, life cycle, resilience, and sustainability. Through these studies, the paper attempts to solve the following key issues: 1. **Bridge safety assessment**: How to assess the safety of existing bridges through advanced testing methods and technologies to ensure that they can safely serve the society. 2. **Bridge maintenance and management**: Propose effective maintenance and management strategies to extend the service life of bridges and reduce the accident risk caused by improper maintenance. 3. **Bridge monitoring technology**: Develop and apply new monitoring technologies, such as distributed fiber - optic sensors (DFOS), digital twin technology, etc., to improve the efficiency and accuracy of bridge condition monitoring. 4. **Whole - life - cycle performance optimization**: From design, construction to operation and maintenance, how to optimize the performance of bridges from the perspective of the whole life cycle to ensure their efficient operation throughout the entire use cycle. 5. **Coping with environmental changes**: Consider the impact of climate change on bridge structures, and propose design and assessment methods to adapt to future environmental changes to ensure the safety and reliability of bridges under extreme weather conditions. Through the above - mentioned research, the paper hopes to provide valuable references for practitioners, students, and researchers in the field of bridge engineering, and promote the development and innovation of bridge engineering.
