Abstract:Kostochka and Woodall (2001) conjectured that the square of every graph has the same chromatic number and list chromatic number. In 2015 Kim and Park disproved this conjecture for non-bipartite and bipartite graphs. It was asked by several authors whether this conjecture holds for bipartite graphs with small degrees, claw-free graphs, or line graphs. In this paper, we introduce cubic counterexamples to this conjecture to solve three open problems posed by Kim and Park~(2015), Kim, Kwon, and Park~(2015), and Dai, Wang, Yang, and Yu~(2018). In particular, we disprove a planar version of this conjecture proposed by Havet, Heuvel, McDiarmid, and Reed (2017). Moreover, we formulated a revised version for this conjecture in bipartite graphs $G$ by imposing the condition $\chi(G^2) \ge \frac{1}{2} \Delta(G^2)+1$, where $G^2$ denotes the square of $G$ and the other two parameter denote its chromatic number and maximum degree. This new version still implies the List Total Coloring Conjecture. On the other hand, we introduce a family of counterexamples obtained from line graphs $L(G)$ of bipartite planar graphs $G$ with sufficiently large maximum degree satisfying $\chi(L(G)^2) \ge \frac{1}{2} \Delta(L(G)^2)$+n, where $n$ is a sufficiently large integer. Finally, we investigate non-chromatic-choosable graphs with bounded maximum degree in bipartite and planar graphs. Consequently, we improve a result due to Bessy, Havet, and Palaysi (2002) and strengthen a result due to Glebov, Kostochka, and Tashkinov~(2005). In addition, we characterize non-chromatic-choosable graphs of order at most $9$ and settle a question posed by Nelsen~(2019).

Abstract:For a number $l\geq 2$, let ${\cal{G}}_l$ denote the family of graphs which have girth $2l+1$ and have no odd hole with length greater than $2l+1$. Wu, Xu and Xu conjectured that every graph in $\bigcup_{l\geq 2} {\cal{G}}_{l}$ is $3$-colorable. Chudnovsky et al., Wu et al., and Chen showed that every graph in ${\cal{G}}_2$, ${\cal{G}}_3$ and $\bigcup_{l\geq 5} {\cal{G}}_{l}$ is $3$-colorable respectively. In this paper, we prove that every graph in ${\cal{G}}_4$ is $3$-colorable. This confirms Wu, Xu and Xu's conjecture.

Abstract:A majority edge-coloring of a graph without pendant edges is a coloring of its edges such that, for every vertex $v$ and every color $\alpha$, there are at most as many edges incident to $v$ colored with $\alpha$ as with all other colors. We extend some known results for finite graphs to infinite graphs, mostly in the list setting. In particular, we prove that every infinite graph without pendant edges has a majority edge-coloring from lists of size $4$. Another interesting result states that every infinite graph without vertices of finite odd degrees admits a majority edge-coloring from lists of size $2$. We formulate two conjectures. As a consequence of our results, we prove that line graphs of any cardinality admit majority vertex-colorings from lists of size 2, thus confirming the Unfriendly Partition Conjecture for line graphs.

Abstract:Let G be a connected graph with n vertices and m edges. Using Whitney's broken cycle theorem, we prove that if k>m−1ln⁡(1+2)≈1.135(m−1) then for every k-list assignment L of G, the number of L-colorings of G is at least that of ordinary k-colorings of G. This improves previous results of Donner (1992) and Thomassen (2009), who proved the result for k sufficiently large and k>n10, respectively.

In this paper, we prove that every graph in G 4 is 3‐colourable. This confirms Wu, Xu and Xu's conjecture.

Abstract:Let r be an integer with r >= 2 and G be a connected r-uniform hypergraph with m edges. By refining the broken cycle theorem for hypergraphs, we show that if k>m-1ln(1+2)approximate to 1.135(m-1), then the k-list assignment of G admitting the fewest colorings is the constant list assignment. This extends the previous results of Donner, Thomassen, and the current authors for graphs.

Abstract:Recently, Alon, Cambie, and Kang introduced asymmetric list coloring of bipartite graphs, where the size of each vertex's list depends on its part. For complete bipartite graphs, we fix the list sizes of one part and consider the resulting asymptotics, revealing an invariant quantity instrumental in determining choosability across most of the parameter space. By connecting this quantity to a simple question on independent sets of hypergraphs, we strengthen bounds when a part has list size 2. Finally, we state via our framework a conjecture on general bipartite graphs, unifying three conjectures of Alon-Cambie-Kang.

Abstract:A majority coloring of a directed graph is a vertex-coloring in which every vertex has the same color as at most half of its out-neighbors. Kreutzer, Oum, Seymour, van der Zypen and Wood proved that every digraph has a majority $4$-coloring and conjectured that every digraph admits a majority $3$-coloring. They observed that the Local Lemma implies the conjecture for digraphs of large enough minimum out-degree if, crucially, the maximum in-degree is bounded by a(n exponential) function of the minimum out-degree. Our goal in this paper is to develop alternative methods that allow the verification of the conjecture for natural, broad digraph classes, without any restriction on the in-degrees. Among others, we prove the conjecture 1) for digraphs with chromatic number at most $6$ or dichromatic number at most $3$, and thus for all planar digraphs; and 2) for digraphs with maximum out-degree at most $4$. The benchmark case of $r$-regular digraphs remains open for $r \in [5,143]$. Our inductive proofs depend on loaded inductive statements about precoloring extensions of list-colorings. This approach also gives rise to stronger conclusions, involving the choosability version of majority coloring. We also give further evidence towards the existence of majority-$3$-colorings by showing that every digraph has a fractional majority 3.9602-coloring. Moreover we show that every digraph with large enough minimum out-degree has a fractional majority $(2+\varepsilon)$-coloring.
Weighted and locally bounded list-colorings in split graphs, cographs, and partial k-trees

Abstract:For a fixed number of colors, we show that, in node-weighted split graphs, cographs, and graphs of bounded tree-width, one can determine in polynomial time whether a proper list-coloring of the vertices of a graph such that the total weight of vertices of each color equals a given value in each part of a fixed partition of the vertices exists. We also show that this result is tight in some sense, by providing hardness results for the cases where any one of the assumptions does not hold. The edge-coloring variant is also studied, as well as special cases of cographs and split graphs.

Equitable list coloring of planar graphs with given maximum degree

Abstract:If $L$ is a list assignment of $r$ colors to each vertex of an $n$-vertex graph $G$, then an equitable $L$-coloring of $G$ is a proper coloring of vertices of $G$ from their lists such that no color is used more than $\lceil n/r\rceil$ times. A graph is equitably $r$-choosable if it has an equitable $L$-coloring for every $r$-list assignment $L$. In 2003, Kostochka, Pelsmajer and West (KPW) conjectured that an analog of the famous Hajnal-Szemerédi Theorem on equitable coloring holds for equitable list coloring, namely, that for each positive integer $r$ every graph $G$ with maximum degree at most $r-1$ is equitably $r$-choosable. The main result of this paper is that for each $r\geq 9$ and each planar graph $G$, a stronger statement holds: if the maximum degree of $G$ is at most $r$, then $G$ is equitably $r$-choosable. In fact, we prove the result for a broader class of graphs -- the class ${\mathcal{B}}$ of the graphs in which each bipartite subgraph $B$ with $|V(B)|\ge3$ has at most $2|V(B)|-4$ edges. Together with some known results, this implies that the KPW Conjecture holds for all graphs in ${\mathcal{B}}$, in particular, for all planar graphs.

Proper Conflict-Free Coloring of Graphs with Large Maximum Degree

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Discrete Mathematics, Volume 38, Issue 4, Page 3004-3027, December 2024. A proper coloring of a graph is conflict-free if, for every nonisolated vertex, some color is used exactly once on its neighborhood. Caro, Petruševski, and Škrekovski [Discrete Math., 346 (2023), 113221] proved that every graph [math] has a proper conflict-free coloring with at most [math] colors and conjectured that [math] colors suffice for every connected graph [math] with [math]. Our first main result is that even for list-coloring, [math] colors suffice for every graph [math] with [math]; we also prove slightly weaker bounds for all graphs with [math]. These results follow from our more general framework on proper conflict-free list-coloring of a pair consisting of a graph [math] and a "conflict" hypergraph [math]. As another corollary of our results in this general framework, every graph has a proper [math]-list-coloring such that every bichromatic component is a path on at most three vertices, where the number of colors is optimal up to a constant factor. Our proof uses a fairly new type of recursive counting argument called Rosenfeld counting, which is a variant of the Lovász local lemma or entropy compression. We also prove an asymptotically optimal result for a fractional analogue of our general framework for proper conflict-free coloring for pairs of a graph and a conflict hypergraph. A corollary states that every graph [math] has a fractional [math]-coloring such that every fractionally bichromatic component has at most two vertices. In particular, it implies that the fractional analogue of the conjecture of Caro, Petruševski, and Škrekovski holds asymptotically in a strong sense.

The List-3-Coloring Problem is to decide, given a graph [math] and a list [math] of colors assigned to each vertex [math] of [math], whether [math] admits a proper coloring [math] with [math] for every vertex [math] of [math], and the 3-Coloring Problem is the List-3-Coloring Problem on instances with [math] for every vertex [math] of [math]. The List-3-Coloring Problem is a classical NP-complete problem, and it is well-known that while restricted to [math]-free graphs (meaning graphs with no induced subgraph isomorphic to a fixed graph [math]), it remains NP-complete unless [math] is isomorphic to an induced subgraph of a path. However, the current state of art is far from proving this to be sufficient for a polynomial time algorithm; in fact, the complexity of the 3-Coloring Problem on [math]-free graphs (where [math] denotes the eight-vertex path) is unknown. Here we consider a variant of the List-3-Coloring Problem called the Ordered Graph List-3-Coloring Problem, where the input is an ordered graph, that is, a graph along with a linear order on its vertex set. For ordered graphs [math] and [math], we say [math] is [math]-free if [math] is not isomorphic to an induced subgraph of [math] with the isomorphism preserving the linear order. We prove, assuming [math] to be an ordered graph, a nearly complete dichotomy for the Ordered Graph List-3-Coloring Problem restricted to [math]-free ordered graphs. In particular, we show that the problem can be solved in polynomial time if [math] has at most one edge, and remains NP-complete if [math] has at least three edges. Moreover, in the case where [math] has exactly two edges, we give a complete dichotomy when the two edges of [math] share an end, and prove several NP-completeness results when the two edges of [math] do not share an end, narrowing the open cases down to three very special types of two-edge ordered graphs.

Abstract:The Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture states that for a graph $G$, if $\Delta(G)\geq9$, then $\chi(G)\leq\max\{\Delta(G)-1,\omega(G)\}$. We use $P_t$ and $C_t$ to denote a path and a cycle on $t$ vertices, respectively. Let $C=v_1v_2v_3v_4v_5v_1$ be an induced $C_5$. A {\em $C_5^+$} is a graph obtained from $C$ by adding a $C_3=xyzx$ and a $P_2=t_1t_2$ such that (1) $x$ and $y$ are both exactly adjacent to $v_1,v_2,v_3$ in $V(C)$, $z$ is exactly adjacent to $v_2$ in $V(C)$, $t_1$ is exactly adjacent to $v_4,v_5$ in $V(C)$ and $t_2$ is exactly adjacent to $v_1,v_4,v_5$ in $V(C)$, (2) $t_1$ is exactly adjacent to $z$ in $\{x,y,z\}$ and $t_2$ has no neighbors in $\{x,y,z\}$. In this paper, we show that the Borodin-Kostochka Conjecture holds for ($P_6,C_4,H$)-free graphs, where $H\in \{K_7,C_5^+\}$. This generalizes some results of Gupta and Pradhan in \cite{GP21,GP24}.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the group and list group colorings of total graphs and we give two group versions of the total and list total colorings conjectures. We establish the group version of the total coloring conjecture for the following classes of graphs: graphs with small maximum degree, two-degenerate graphs, planner graphs with maximum degree at least 11, planner graphs without certain small cycles, outerplanar and near-outerplanar graphs. In addition, the group version of the list total coloring conjecture is established for forests, outerplanar graphs and graphs with maximum degree at most two.

Abstract:Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov conjectured in 1999 that for every finite graph $F$, there exists a quantity $c(F)$ such that $\chi(G) \leqslant (c(F) + o(1)) \Delta / \log\Delta$ whenever $G$ is an $F$-free graph of maximum degree $\Delta$. The largest class of connected graphs $F$ for which this conjecture has been verified so far, by Alon, Krivelevich, and Sudakov themselves, comprises the almost bipartite graphs (i.e., subgraphs of the complete tripartite graph $K_{1,t,t}$ for some $t \in \mathbb{N}$). However, the optimal value for $c(F)$ remains unknown even for such graphs. Bollobás showed, using random regular graphs, that $c(F) \geqslant 1/2$ when $F$ contains a cycle. On the other hand, Davies, Kang, Pirot, and Sereni recently established an upper bound of $c(K_{1,t,t}) \leqslant t$. We improve this to a constant, showing $c(F) \leqslant 4$ for every almost bipartite graph $F$. This surprisingly makes the bound independent of $F$ in all the known cases of the conjecture, leading us to make a new conjecture that $c(F)$ is always bounded above by some constant $c$ independent of $F$. We also establish a more general version of our bound in the setting of DP-coloring (also known as correspondence coloring) and consider some algorithmic consequences of our results.

Abstract:In this paper we consider a colouring version of the general position problem. The \emph{$\gp $-chromatic number} is the smallest number of colours needed to colour $V(G)$ such that each colour class has the no-three-in-line property. We determine bounds on this colouring number in terms of the diameter, general position number, size, chromatic number, cochromatic number and total domination number and prove realisation results. We also determine it for several graph classes, including Kneser graphs $K(n,2)$, line graphs of complete graphs, complete multipartite graphs, block graphs and Cartesian products. We also show that the $\gp $-colouring problem is NP-complete.

Optimally Reconfiguring List and Correspondence Colourings

Abstract:The reconfiguration graph $\mathcal{C}_k(G)$ for the $k$-colourings of a graph $G$ has a vertex for each proper $k$-colouring of $G$, and two vertices of $\mathcal{C}_k(G)$ are adjacent precisely when those $k$-colourings differ on a single vertex of $G$. Much work has focused on bounding the maximum value of ${\rm{diam}}~\mathcal{C}_k(G)$ over all $n$-vertex graphs $G$. We consider the analogous problems for list colourings and for correspondence colourings. We conjecture that if $L$ is a list-assignment for a graph $G$ with $|L(v)|\ge d(v)+2$ for all $v\in V(G)$, then ${\rm{diam}}~\mathcal{C}_L(G)\le n(G)+\mu(G)$. We also conjecture that if $(L,H)$ is a correspondence cover for a graph $G$ with $|L(v)|\ge d(v)+2$ for all $v\in V(G)$, then ${\rm{diam}}~\mathcal{C}_{(L,H)}(G)\le n(G)+\tau(G)$. (Here $\mu(G)$ and $\tau(G)$ denote the matching number and vertex cover number of $G$.) For every graph $G$, we give constructions showing that both conjectures are best possible. Our first main result proves the upper bounds (for the list and correspondence versions, respectively) ${\rm{diam}}~\mathcal{C}_L(G)\le n(G)+2\mu(G)$ and ${\rm{diam}}~\mathcal{C}_{(L,H)}(G)\le n(G)+2\tau(G)$. Our second main result proves that both conjectured bounds hold, whenever all $v$ satisfy $|L(v)|\ge 2d(v)+1$. We conclude by proving one or both conjectures for various classes of graphs such as complete bipartite graphs, subcubic graphs, cactuses, and graphs with bounded maximum average degree.
