Abstract:The optical combiner is an important part of the optical see-through augmented reality display system. Waveguide is an appropriate solution due to its advantages such as light weight and compact structure. Because grating has replicability, it is a promising solution to the waveguide's coupler for mass-production. In this paper, a grating coupler for waveguide is designed by using the rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) to increase the accuracy of the simulation due to the critical dimension is similar to the wavelength. The uniformity of the diffraction efficiency is considered as an important parameter for a better displaying performance. The downhill algorithm is used to optimize the parameters of the grating. In order to obtain a large field of view, the thickness of the grating should be controlled carefully. Finally, two gratings are designed for the waveguide which can extend pupil horizontally. The displaying performance of the waveguide is simulated, and the grating couplers are fabricated by the nanoimprint lithography method. The characteristics of the gratings are tested such as transmittance and diffraction efficiency. The results show the proposed gratings can be utilized for waveguide's coupler. It is believed that our results will give a better alternative for the augmented reality display system.
Wide Field-of-view Waveguide Coupling Metasurfaces Used on Augmented Reality System

Abstract:In recent years, Augmented reality (AR) technology has gained great attention. One critical component of AR devices is the see-through optical combiner. Several approaches have been proposed, such as using either refractive, reflective, diffractive, holographic optics, or a combination of them. Meta-surfaces can realize the design of more required optical element due to its superb abilities of controlling the amplitude, phase, polarization or other parameters of wave-front at subwavelength scale. Thus, we proposed a waveguide coupler based on a polarization independent doublet meta-surface, which can realize field of view (FOV) to 50° at the wavelength of 638 nm. Compare to the diffractive grating based optical combiner architecture, our doublet meta-surfaces improve the problem of FOV limited by the refractive index of the waveguide and uneven brightness in AR display devices. The polarization independent doublet meta-surfaces presented in this paper can provide a large phase mutation rate to achieve a large deflection angle. The meta-surfaces consist of a group of Silicon nanofins with different side length, but same height arranged on a rectangle glass substrate lattice with the reflection index of 1.764. Each unit structure has different electromagnetic responses to plane electromagnetic waves with different incident angles. By designing the shape and size of each silicon nanorods and other parameters, the phase and amplitude modulation we need can be achieved. Here we only consider one-dimensional eye-box expansion at a single wavelength. The design approach can be generalized to two-dimensional eye-box expansion. Besides, full-color display can be achieved by coordination of the coupling-in and coupling-out device in waveguides.

Abstract:Design challenges in reducing the size, weight, and off-axis aberrations of projection lenses often pose obstacles to the miniaturization of augmented reality (AR) devices like glasses. Here, we present a meta/refractive hybrid lenses (MRL)-based AR projection display illuminated with a MicroLED. The compact system features commercial ability with an entrance pupil diameter of 3.2 mm and a total track length (TTL) less than 7.7 mm, achieving superior resolution and minimal off-axis aberrations with distortion < 2% across a 30 degrees field of view (FoV). The AR glass result also incorporates a hardware-inspired correction neural network with an apparent point-spread-function (PSF) feature. A predeconvolution from light source further corrects the residual system aberration, reinforcing AR image quality. Experiments with this computational enhancement method demonstrate a promoted similarity to the ground truth, validating its reliability and feasibility in increasing the yield rate of compact AR devices.

Abstract:Augmented reality (AR) technology has been applied in various areas, such as large-scale manufacturing, national defense, healthcare, movie and mass media and so on. An important way to realize AR display is using computer-generated hologram (CGH), which is accompanied by low image quality and heavy computing defects. Meanwhile, the diffraction of Liquid Crystal on Silicon (LCoS) has a negative effect on image quality. In this paper, a modified algorithm based on traditional Gerchberg-Saxton (GS) algorithm was proposed to improve the image quality, and new method to establish experimental system was used to broaden field of view (FOV). In the experiment, undesired zero-order diffracted light was eliminated and high definition 2D image was acquired with FOV broadened to 36.1 degree. We have also done some pilot research in 3D reconstruction with tomography algorithm based on Fresnel diffraction. With the same experimental system, experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of 3D reconstruction. These modifications are effective and efficient, and may provide a better solution in AR realization.

Abstract:Additive light field displays are transparent autostereoscopic three-dimensional displays without backlights, thus suitable for augmented reality applications. However, when the parallax between viewpoint images becomes large with the increase of viewing angle, the optimization algorithm is hard to handle too many dissimilarities evenly on all viewpoints, resulting in poor reconstructed quality. This paper presents an additive light field display using the weighted simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique with viewing angle-dependent weight distribution functions. We constrain the optimization to deliver a reconstructed light field of high image quality for viewpoints of large weight. When the proposed method is applied, with a wide dynamic viewing angle of 57 degrees x 43 degrees, the tracked views' peak signal-to-noise ratio exceeds 30 dB with only two additive display layers.

Abstract:We propose a highly efficient waveguide display based on space-variant volume holographic gratings (SVVHGs). The local period and slant angle of the SVVHG vary along the tangential direction, enabling variant incident angles to satisfy the Bragg condition of the local gratings. As a result, we enlarge the field of view (FOV) without using the conventional multiplexing scheme, while achieving high efficiency and large FOV at the same time. We experimentally record the SVVHGs on Bayfol HX200 films. We demonstrate that the proposed display can achieve 31.9% system efficiency for a broadband light source and 52.3% for a coherent light source, 20° FOV, and high brightness uniformity, making it a promising candidate for widespread applications in the augmented reality (AR) industry.

Abstract:We have designed a two‐dimensional surface relief grating for waveguide input coupling in augmented reality (AR) displays, characterized by a large field of view and high angular uniformity. The initial structure of this grating is based on effective refractive index theory. We utilized a Downhill Simplex algorithm to optimize the efficiency of the first transmission diffraction order. With high diffraction efficiency, the optimized structure achieves 88% angular uniformity within a 27‐degree field of view (FOV). The final structure is simple and easy to fabricate.

Abstract:We investigated a diffraction optical waveguide structure with a double layer coupling configuration. This double layer-coupled diffraction optical waveguide structure modulates light information through wavefront modulation for propagation within the optical waveguide and then reproduces the light information through further wavefront modulation, thus achieving optical information transmission. Analysis indicates that the theoretical maximum field of view can reach 90° × 90°. With an actual field of view set to 53° × 53°, an entrance pupil size of 3.2 × 3.2 mm², an eye relief of 10 mm, and 50 pupil expansion, the system's total energy transmission efficiency is 37%, with field of view uniformity at 91% and uniformity within the eye movement range reaching 97%.

Abstract:Augmented reality (AR) applications require displays with an extended color gamut to facilitate the presentation of increasingly immersive content. The waveguide (WG) display technology, which is typical AR demonstration method, is a critical constraint on the color gamut of AR systems because of the intrinsic properties of the holographic optical elements (HOEs) used in this technology. To overcome this limitation, we introduce a method of spatially modulated diffractive optics that can expand the color gamut of HOE-based WG displays. This approach involves spatial modulation using sub-pixelized HOEs, which enables the diffraction of red, green, and blue rays along identical directions. The proposed structure considers both the characteristics of the HOE and the wavelength sensitivity of the observer to optimize the color gamut. Consequently, an expanded color gamut was achieved. The results of the theoretical and experimental analyses substantiate the effectiveness and practicality of this method in enhancing the color gamut of HOE-based WG displays. Thus, the proposed method can facilitate the implementation of more immersive AR displays.

Abstract:Waveguides have become one of the most promising optical combiners for see-through near-eye displays due to the thickness, weight, and transmittance. In this study, we propose a waveguide-type near-eye display using a pin-mirror array and a concaved reflector with a compact outlook, optimized image uniformity and stray light. Issues have been discussed in detail, which include field of view (FOV), eye-box, resolution, depth of field (DOF), display uniformity and stray light artifacts. It can be shown that the DOF can be extended (when compared with traditional waveguide-type near-eye displays) to alleviate the vergence-accommodation conflict (VAC) problem, and the uniformity & stray light can be improved with an optimal structure. Moreover, reflective surfaces have been introduced as the input and output coupling with a compact outlook, an easy-processing structure and the achromatic performance. A prototype based on the proposed method have been successfully developed, and virtual images with an extended DOF can be shown along with the real-world.

Abstract:Augmented reality head-mounted displays (AR-HMDs) utilizing diffractive waveguides have emerged as a popular research focus. However, the illuminance uniformity over the fields of view (FOV) is often unsatisfactory in volume holographic grating (VHG) based waveguide displays. This paper proposes a high uniformity AR waveguide display system. Firstly, the angular uniformity of the VHG-based waveguide displays is analyzed. Subsequently, diffractive optical elements (DOEs) are seamlessly integrated onto the outer coupling surface of the waveguide substrate to improve the angular uniformity through phase compensation. To design the DOE phase, the multi-objective stochastic gradient descent (MO-SGD) algorithm is proposed. A single DOE is used to compensating various images form the image source. A hybrid loss, which includes the learned perceptual image patch similarity (LPIPS) metric, is applied to enhance the algorithm performance. Simulation results show that the proposed method effectively suppresses illumination degradation at the edge FOV in exit pupil images of the waveguide display system. In the results, the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) is improved by 5.54 dB. Optical experiments validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The measured nonuniformity (NU) against FOVs is improved by 53.05% from 0.3749 to 0.1760.

Abstract:Holographic waveguide display (HWD) is a promising solution supporting augmented reality, that can be applied in a variety of fields. Despite its advantage of lightweight and compact form factor, designing a HWD with large FOV and high efficiency simultaneously is still challenging. In this work, we revisit this FOV compromise issue and propose a HWD design incorporating space‐variant volume holographic gratings. The resulted prototype display achieves 20° FOV and 31.9% system efficiency.

Abstract:Augmented reality (AR) technology integrates computer-generated virtual information into the real world, providing users with an immersive experience. AR technology is considered next-generation display technology; however, there are issues. In this paper, an optical waveguide design based on achromatic metagratings is proposed to solve the problems of chromatic aberration, color uniformity, and light field uniformity in the AR display system. The coupling response of metagratings is simulated. In the case of a single-layer metagrating, the light with three wavelengths (473, 532, and 620 nm) is incident and emitted at the same angle, eliminating chromatic aberration. Based on this, we designed a double-layer metagrating. With the double-layer metagrating, the intensity ratio and coupling efficiency of light with different wavelengths can be adjusted, and color uniformity can be improved, which is expected to be used for pupil expansion. The proposed AR display optical waveguide design based on achromatic metagratings will offer a new design idea for AR head-mounted displays.

Breaking the in-coupling efficiency limit in waveguide-based AR displays with polarization volume gratings

Abstract:Augmented reality (AR) displays, heralded as the next-generation platform for spatial computing, metaverse, and digital twins, empower users to perceive digital images overlaid with real-world environment, fostering a deeper level of human-digital interactions. With the rapid evolution of couplers, waveguide-based AR displays have streamlined the entire system, boasting a slim form factor and high optical performance. However, challenges persist in the waveguide combiner, including low optical efficiency and poor image uniformity, significantly hindering the long-term usage and user experience. In this paper, we first analyze the root causes of the low optical efficiency and poor uniformity in waveguide-based AR displays. We then discover and elucidate an anomalous polarization conversion phenomenon inherent to polarization volume gratings (PVGs) when the incident light direction does not satisfy the Bragg condition. This new property is effectively leveraged to circumvent the tradeoff between in-coupling efficiency and eyebox uniformity. Through feasibility demonstration experiments, we measure the light leakage in multiple PVGs with varying thicknesses using a laser source and a liquid-crystal-on-silicon light engine. The experiment corroborates the polarization conversion phenomenon, and the results align with simulation well. To explore the potential of such a polarization conversion phenomenon further, we design and simulate a waveguide display with a 50° field of view. Through achieving first-order polarization conversion in a PVG, the in-coupling efficiency and uniformity are improved by 2 times and 2.3 times, respectively, compared to conventional couplers. This groundbreaking discovery holds immense potential for revolutionizing next-generation waveguide-based AR displays, promising a higher efficiency and superior image uniformity.

Abstract:Dispersion problem has always constrained the development of see-through near-eye displays with diffractive waveguide. Here, we propose a design method and optical systems for one-layer achromatic surface microstructure composed with a triple-carved-sub-grating. The triple-carved-sub-grating with specified period is designed based on rigorous coupled wave theory, corresponding to Red (R), Green (G) and Blue (B) wavelengths, respectively. The surface microstructure with period of 18.9um is realized by synthesizing the three sub-gratings together, and it is verified numerically that the diffractive angle of R, G, and B wavelengths is 35°under the normal incidence of TE polarization, which imply that the surface microstructure diffracts the certain RGB wavelengths achromatically. A diffraction waveguide with achromatic surface microstructure is also modeled to analysis the stray light and color correction, and the results indicate that the diffraction waveguide transmits image with little stray light. Via proper duplication it could be utilized as the combining optics of diffractive-waveguide near-eye display and head-up display because of its light and compact features.

Abstract:Augmented reality (AR) devices, as smart glasses, enable users to see both the real world and virtual images simultaneously, contributing to an immersive experience in interactions and visualization. Recently, to reduce the size and weight of smart glasses, waveguides incorporating holographic optical elements in the form of advanced grating structures have been utilized to provide light-weight solutions instead of bulky helmet-type headsets. However current waveguide displays often have limited display resolution, efficiency and field-of-view, with complex multi-step fabrication processes of lower yield. In addition, current AR displays often have vergence-accommodation conflict in the augmented and virtual images, resulting in focusing-visual fatigue and eye strain. Here we report metasurface optical elements designed and experimentally implemented as a platform solution to overcome these limitations. Through careful dispersion control in the excited propagation and diffraction modes, we design and implement our high-resolution full-color prototype, via the combination of analytical-numerical simulations, nanofabrication and device measurements. With the metasurface control of the light propagation, our prototype device achieves a 1080-pixel resolution, a field-of-view more than 40°, an overall input-output efficiency more than 1%, and addresses the vergence-accommodation conflict through our focal-free implementation. Furthermore, our AR waveguide is achieved in a single metasurface-waveguide layer, aiding the scalability and process yield control.

Abstract:Waveguide‐type near‐eye display couplers have attracted attention in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) applications. However, most devices using specific optical elements operate with low and nonuniform efficiency. Herein, the 2D angular bandwidth broadening metasurface grating is proposed. This device provides a suitable role for waveguide couplers in AR and VR systems. Waveguide‐type near‐eye displays (NED) have attracted increasing attention in the market of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) devices, thanks to their outstanding performance within ultra‐compact size. The performance of waveguide‐type NED mainly depends on the waveguide coupler that transmits the incident image to the user's eye through the total internal reflection (TIR) inside the waveguide. However, the waveguide couplers, that have been widely used, exhibit nonuniform diffraction efficiency within the transferable angular range, i.e., field of view (FoV) of waveguide‐type NED, so that the image intensity distribution distortion is induced. Thus, it is needed that many researchers focus on broadening angular bandwidth to overcome the non‐uniformity of the diffraction efficiency. Herein, the 2D angular bandwidth broadening metasurface grating that exhibits uniform and high diffraction efficiency for the 2D FoV range is proposed. Specifically, the proposed device is designed specifically, and the diffraction efficiency of this device shows uniform efficiency of about 75% with a variance of 0.25% for the FoV range, and it is demonstrated both numerically and experimentally. Consequently, it is expected that the proposed device can be a game‐changer in the market for waveguide‐type NED for the enhancement of image uniformity.
