Abstract:To suppress the undesired signals at the front-ends of wireless systems, a codesign of a simple filtering antenna highly integrated with a slotline-based network is presented and studied in this letter. The proposed antenna integrated with the low-pass filter, the bandpass response is achieved, and impedance bandwidth is also enlarged due to the additional reflection pole contributed by the high integration, which has been evaluated and verified through numerical calculations and full-wave simulations. A design example of the filtering antenna working at 3.5 GHz is developed and fabricated for demonstration purposes. Measured results indicate that good filtering responses with a low insertion loss are achieved. Compared to the original patch antenna, the fractional impedance bandwidth of the proposed one is significantly enhanced, from 6.63% to 13.7%. Besides, harmonics of up to 15.5 GHz are well suppressed. The proposed scheme is simple and compact, exhibiting attractive performance for bandwidth enhancement and spurious suppression applications.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to address the issue of unnecessary signal suppression in the front end of wireless systems. Specifically, the paper proposes and studies a highly integrated design scheme of a simple filtering antenna and slotline network. The main objectives include: 1. **Out-of-band suppression**: By integrating a low-pass filter, a band-pass response is achieved, and the impedance bandwidth is expanded. This goal is validated due to the additional reflection poles brought by the high integration. 2. **Performance enhancement**: Compared to the original patch antenna, the proposed antenna's impedance bandwidth is significantly enhanced, increasing from 6.63% to 13.7%, and harmonics up to 15.5 GHz are well suppressed. 3. **Compact design**: The scheme is simple and compact, with low insertion loss, and performs excellently in bandwidth enhancement and spurious signal suppression applications. The paper demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed design through theoretical calculations, full-wave simulations, and actual measurement results, showcasing its potential application value in modern wireless communication systems.
