Abstract:Objective: This study aims to assess hydrogen peroxide (HP) penetration into the pulp chamber, color change (CC), physical-chemical properties, and material wastage (MW) and material used (MU) in mixing tips when using in-office bleaching gels with two different mixing tips. Materials and methods: Forty teeth were divided into five groups (n = 8) based on the bleaching gels used (Pola Office +37.5% [PO+] and Whiteness HP Automixx Plus 35% [AM+]) and the mixing tip types (T-Mixer and Helical). A negative control group was treated with ultra-purified water. HP concentration was measured using UV-Vis, and CC was evaluated with a digital spectrophotometer. Initial concentration, pH, and viscosity were measured through Titration, a Digital pH meter, and Rheometer, respectively. MW and MU were measured using a precise analytical balance. Statistical analysis included two-way ANOVA, Tukey's, and Dunnett's test (α = 0.05). Results: A higher HP concentration was observed with PO+ with the Helical mixing tip in comparison with AM+ (p = 0.01). No significant differences in CC or MU were found for different mixing tips (p = 0.001). The T-mixer mixing tip resulted in significantly less MW (p < 0.00001) and improved mixture homogeneity and viscosity. Conclusions: Utilizing a T-mixer with self-mixing bleaching gels achieves comparable CC while reducing MW. Moreover, it decreases HP penetration when using PO+. Clinical significance: For the application of a self-mixing in-office bleaching gel, a T-mixer mixing tip should be recommended, as it reduces the penetration of hydrogen peroxide into the pulp chamber when using PO+, while also minimizing gel wastage.

Abstract:Objective: Evaluate the penetration of hydrogen peroxide (HP) into the pulp chamber, bleaching efficacy (BE) and amount of gel expended during in-office bleaching using an applicator brush tip and conventional tip from different commercial brands. Materials and methods: 104 human premolars were randomly distributed into thirteen groups (n = 8) according to the commercial brand: DSP White Clinic 35 % Calcium (DW), Nano White 35 % (NW), Total Blanc One-Step 35 % (TS), Whiteness HP Blue 35 % (WB), Potenza Bianco Pro SS 38 % (PB), Opalescence XTra Boost 40 % (OB), no bleaching (negative control), and application method: applicator brush tip and conventional tip for all groups. Initial HP concentration (%) was determined via titration and pH was measured with digital pH meter. Concentration (µg/mL) of HP into the pulp chamber was measured using UV-Vis spectrophotometry, the BE (ΔE*ab, ΔE00 and ΔWID) was evaluated with a digital spectrophotometer, and the amount of gel expended was evaluated using a precision analytical digital balance. Statistical analysis included two-way ANOVA, Tukey's, and Dunnett's test. Comparison between HP into the pulp chamber vs BE was performed with Person's correlation (α = 0.05). Results: Brush tip demonstrated a low amount of HP in the pulp chamber compared to the conventional method for all bleaching gels (p < 0.0003), as well as lower amount of gel expended (p < 0.002). The brush tip did not result in a significant difference in BE compared to the conventional (p > 0.05). No correlations were found between both factors (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Brush tip showed lower penetration of HP in the pulp chamber and a reduced volume of spent gel when compared to the conventional tip, for all commercial brands. Clinical relevance: Brush tip is recommended for bleaching gels in an attachable syringe due to its ability to reduce the penetration of HP into the pulp chamber and minimize the amount of bleaching gel used.

Abstract:Background: To evaluate the decomposition rate of active hydrogen peroxide (HP) and bleaching efficacy during in-office bleaching using high-concentration HP gels with different pHs. Method: A randomized, parallel, double-blind controlled trial was conducted with 40 volunteers randomized into four groups (pH 5.4; pH 7.0; pH 7.7, and pH 8.0). During the first session in-office bleaching, approximately 0.01 g of the gel was collected and titrated with potassium permanganate to obtain the concentration of active HP and pH values were measured using an electrode. Bleaching efficacy was assessed using a spectrophotometer [∆Eab, ∆E00, and WID], Vita Classical and Vita Bleachedguide scales [∆SGU]. The decomposition rate of HP concentration and pH values change were calculated using ANOVA one-way. The bleaching efficacy was assessed using two-way repeated measures ANOVA. Tukey's test was applied as a post-hoc test (p < 0.05). Results: All gels experienced decreasing HP concentration over time. pH 5.4 gel showed greatest reduction after 50 min (p < 0.001). pH 8.0 and 7.7 gels remained stable; pH 5.4 remained acidic, while pH 7.0 turned acidic (p < 0.001). No significant difference in bleaching degree was observed among gels. They all showed a similar and clinically important color change after two clinical sessions, remained stable 1-month post-treatment (p > 0.05). Conclusions: All bleaching gels kept at least 70% of their HP content after 50 min, suggesting that there is a surplus of HP. They provided similar whitening efficacy 1-month after bleaching. Practical implications: It is possible that lower HP concentrations may be equally effective in achieving desired results while reducing the potential for side effects. Abstract:Objectives: The present study evaluated the pulp response of human mandibular incisors subjected to in-office dental bleaching using gels with medium or high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (HP). Materials and methods: The following groups were compared: 35% HP (HP35; n = 5) or 20% HP (HP20; n = 4). In the control group (CONT; n = 2), no dental bleaching was performed. The color change (CC) was registered at baseline and after 2 days using the Vita Classical shade guide. Tooth sensitivity (TS) was also recorded for 2 days post-bleaching. The teeth were extracted 2 days after the clinical procedure and subjected to histological analysis. The CC and overall scores for histological evaluation were evaluated by the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. The percentage of patients with TS was evaluated by the Fisher exact test (α = 0.05). Results: The CC and TS of the HP35 group were significantly higher than those of the CONT group (p < 0.05) and the HP20 group showed an intermediate response, without significant differences from either the HP35 or CONT group (p > 0.05). In both experimental groups, the coronal pulp tissue exhibited partial necrosis associated with tertiary dentin deposition. Overall, the subjacent pulp tissue exhibited a mild inflammatory response. Conclusions: In-office bleaching therapies using bleaching gels with 20% or 35% HP caused similar pulp damage to the mandibular incisors, characterized by partial necrosis, tertiary dentin deposition, and mild inflammation.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to evaluate the in vitro diffusion of commercial bleaching products (hydrogen peroxide (HP) or carbamide peroxide (CP) based) with different application protocols. Human enamel-dentin discs were obtained and divided into 20 groups. Four commercial products based on HP (Pola Office+(PO), Perfect Bleach (PB), Norblanc Office-automix (NO), and Boost (BT)), and one based on CP (PolaDay CP (PD)), were evaluated with different application protocols (3 applications × 10 min or 1 application × 30 min, with or without light activation). Artificial pulp chambers with 100 μL of a buffer solution were prepared. After each application, the buffer was removed and diffused HP was quantified by fluorimetry. Data were analyzed with two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s test. In groups where 3 × 10 min applications were done, after the first 10 min, PB, NO, and PD showed similar diffusion (p 0.05), with similar results for NO and PD. Comparing products with or without light activation, PO, BT, and PB showed significantly greater diffusion with light activation (p < 0.05). Reapplication, and light activation, increased HP diffusion independently of the concentration of the product.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the alteration of human enamel bleached with high concentrations of hydrogen peroxide associated with different activators.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty enamel/dentin blocks (4 × 4 mm) were obtained from human third molars and randomized divided according to the bleaching procedure (n = 10): G1 = 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP - Whiteness HP Maxx); G2 = HP + Halogen lamp (HL); G3 = HP + 7% sodium bicarbonate (SB); G4 = HP + 20% sodium hydroxide (SH); and G5 = 38% hydrogen peroxide (OXB - Opalescence Xtra Boost). The bleaching treatments were performed in three sessions with a 7-day interval between them. The enamel content, before (baseline) and after bleaching, was determined using an FT-Raman spectrometer and was based on the concentration of phosphate, carbonate, and organic matrix. Statistical analysis was performed using two-way ANOVA for repeated measures and Tukey's test.RESULTS: The results showed no significant differences between time of analysis (p = 0.5175) for most treatments and peak areas analyzed; and among bleaching treatments (p = 0.4184). The comparisons during and after bleaching revealed a significant difference in the HP group for the peak areas of carbonate and organic matrix, and for the organic matrix in OXB and HP+SH groups. Tukey's analysis determined that the difference, peak areas, and the interaction among treatment, time and peak was statistically significant (p < 0.05).CONCLUSION: The association of activators with hydrogen peroxide was effective in the alteration of enamel, mainly with regards to the organic matrix.

Effect of Bleaching Gel Viscosity on Tooth Whitening Efficacy and Pulp Chamber Penetration: an in Vitro Study

Abstract:OBJECTIVES:Whitening efficacy has been related to hydrogen peroxide (HP) diffusion into tooth structure. However, little information is available relating rheological properties to whitening efficacy. The purpose was to evaluate the whitening efficacy and HP penetration level of a 10% HP gel at three different viscosities and to compare them to a strip delivery system.METHODS AND MATERIALS:Extracted molars (n=120) were randomly assigned into five groups (n=24/ group): NC_MED (negative control; median): medium viscosity gel without HP; LOW: 10% HP gel (low viscosity experimental gel, Ultradent Products Inc); MED: 10% HP gel (medium viscosity experimental gel, Ultradent); HIGH: 10% HP gel (high viscosity gel, Ultradent); and CWS: Crest 3D Whitestrips 1-Hour Express (Procter & Gamble). All teeth were subjected to five 60-minute whitening sessions. Instrumental color measurements were performed at baseline (T0), and 1-day after each application (T1-T5), and 1-month after whitening (T6). HP penetration was estimated with leucocrystal violet and horseradish peroxidase. A Kruskal-Wallis test and post hoc Bonferroni test were performed to assess the difference in tooth color change and HP penetration among the groups (α=0.05).RESULTS:Hydrogen peroxide penetration levels and overall color changes at T6 were 0.24 μg/mL / 2.80; 0.48 μg/mL / 8.48; 0.44 μg/mL / 7.72; 0.35 μg/mL / 8.49; 0.36 μg/mL / 7.30 for groups NC, LOW, MED, HIGH, and CWS, respectively. There was a significant difference for HP penetration, while there was no significant difference among the four experimental groups for tooth color change.CONCLUSION:Rheological properties should be considered when developing new whitening formulations.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of bleaching agents containing different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (HP) on color-change and on enamel-surface in bovine teeth. Furthermore the influence on cell viability and proliferation was investigated. Two hundred and forty teeth were randomly assigned into four groups (home bleaching ≤6%, in-office bleaching ≤6%, in-office bleaching > 6% HP, and control group). Bleaching was performed after artificial staining and the bleached index (BI) as well as the whiteness index (WID) was measured at several time points. Chemical analysis for HP concentrations and the pH of the bleaching products was done. Furthermore, enamel surfaces of randomly selected specimens were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and cytotoxicity of the tested bleaching products was evaluated in vitro using dental pulp cells (DPCs) and L929 cells. A statistically significant whitening effect was observed in almost all products. As expected all investigated products resulted in decreased cell viability, however, with different values of LC50 (median lethal concentration). SEM analysis showed an analog of enamel alterations with decreasing pH, increasing exposure time, and increasing HP concentration. Bleaching agents containing a low HP concentration are considered to be effective and to have less damaging effects on enamel and tested cells.

Abstract:Objectives. To compare the tooth whitening efficacy, temperature and HP concentration changes induced by halogen light-activated and chemically activated in-office bleaching systems. Materials and methods. Twenty-four extracted premolars were randomly divided into two groups (n = 12): Group BL (35% HP with halogen light activation) and Group OP (38% HP with chemical activation). Tooth color was measured by a spectrophotometer according to the CIE L*a*b* color space system. Temperatures of bleaching gels and pulp chambers during the bleaching process were monitored and recorded by a digital multimeter with K-type thermocouple. HP concentrations were tested before and after treatments by iodometry. ANOVA and paired t-test were used for statistical analyses at the significance of p < 0.05. Results. Tooth whitening resulted in the increase of ΔL* and ΔE and reduction of Δb*. Paired t-tests revealed groups BL had greater ΔE than group OP, however, there was no statistically significant difference in ΔE between them after 3 weeks post-treatment. Maximal temperature rise (ΔT) was found only in group BL, showing the increment of 2.55 and 2.02°C for bleaching gels and pulp chambers, respectively. HP concentrations were higher than baseline values for group OP (p < 0.001) rather than group BL. Conclusions. Halogen light and chemically activated in-office bleaching systems were both effective for tooth whitening, but halogen light activation could improve the immediate whitening effect. In contrast, chemical activation was a more conservative method due to the little temperature rise in pulp chambers.
Effectiveness and one-year whiteness stability of different in-office bleaching agents and alternative protocols

Abstract:Statement of problem: In-office bleaching has been widely researched. However, few studies have evaluated alternative protocols for this procedure. Moreover, information on the long-term stability of in-office whitening is limited. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effectiveness and 1-year stability of in-office bleaching with 35% hydrogen peroxide (35%HP) and 37% carbamide peroxide (37%CP) using traditional and alternative protocols. Material and methods: Forty human third molars were stained with tea and allocated to groups (n=10). Traditional protocols consisted of 3 applications of 35%HP for 15 minutes and 1 application of 37%CP for 45 minutes. Alternative protocols consisted of 1 application of 35%HP for 45 minutes and 3 applications of 37%CP for 45 minutes. Protocols were applied for 3 weeks. CIELab color coordinates were measured at baseline and weekly during treatment and at 1-week, 6-month, and 1-year follow-ups. Effectiveness and stability of the bleaching treatments were interpreted using 50:50% perceptibility and acceptability thresholds. CIELab, chroma, hue angle, and whiteness index were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test (α=.05). Results: All protocols showed improvement in bleaching after the first week (P≤.005). All bleaching procedures presented excellent whitening outcomes. Alternative protocols showed a larger rebound effect after 1 year, indicating less stability. For the whiteness index, no differences between the completion of the treatments and 1-year follow-up was found for the bleaching treatments and protocols (P>.05), except for the 37%CP alternative protocol (P=.005). Conclusions: All tested protocols presented excellent effectiveness in bleaching. Traditional protocols exhibited a greater whiteness stability, while the alternative protocols showed a greater rebound effect after 1 year.

Abstract:Objectives This study evaluated the efficacy of simulated brushing with toothpastes containing different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (HP) in pulp chamber penetration and color change. Also, physical-chemical properties (concentration, pH and viscosity) were evaluated. Methods Forty-nine premolars were divided into seven groups (n = 7): untreated (control); whitening gel (White Class 6%, 6%BG) with one 90 min application (6%BG 90min) and 14 applications of 90 min (6%BG 14×90min); toothpastes (Colgate Luminous White Glow 3%, 3%TP; Crest 3D White Brilliance 4%, 4%TP; Colgate Optic White Pro Series 5%, 5%TP) and 6%BG toothbrushing for 14 applications of 90 s. HP penetration into the pulp chamber was measured through UV-Vis spectrophotometry and color change with a spectrophotometer (ΔE ab , ΔE 00 , and ΔWI D ). Initial concentration, pH, and viscosity were measured through Titration, Digital pH-meter, and Rheometer, respectively. Statistical analysis used one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Results 6%BG (14×90min) and 4%TP groups showed acidic pH and higher concentrations of HP in the pulp chamber compared to the other groups ( p < 0.05). On the other side, 3%TP and 5%TP groups showed alkaline pH, higher viscosity between the toothpastes and lower HP penetration ( p < 0.05). The 6%BG AH (14×90min) group exhibited the most significant color change (ΔE ab , ΔE 00 , and ΔWI D ) ( p < 0.05). Conclusions Brushing with whitening toothpaste with an acidic pH leads to greater HP penetration into pulp chamber; but, even when a high concentrated HP whitening toothpaste was used, a lower whitening effect was observed when compared to a two-week at-home bleaching. Clinical Significance Whitening toothpastes containing up to 5% hydrogen peroxide produced lower whitening effect than two-week at-home bleaching. Additionally, hydrogen peroxide was detected within the pulp chamber which can potentially impact in tooth sensitivity.

Materials and methods: Forty-nine premolars were randomized into seven groups (n = 7): untreated (control); at-home bleaching with 10% carbamide peroxide gel (AH; 10% CP) with 14 and 28 applications of 180 min each (AH [14 × 180 min] and AH [28 × 180 min]); three whitening toothpastes (3% HP; 4% HP and 5% HP) and 10% CP brushed 28 times for 90 s each (TB [28 × 90 s]). HP permeability was measured using a UV-VIS spectrophotometer and color change by a digital spectrophotometer (ΔEab, ΔE00, and ΔWID). Initial concentration, pH, and viscosity were measured through titration, digital pH meter, and rheometer, respectively. Statistical analysis included one-way ANOVA, Tukey's test, and Dunnett's test (α = 0.05). Results: 4% HP group showed acidic pH, the lowest viscosity and the highest HP concentration into the pulp chamber (p < 0.05). The 10% CP groups had lower HP in the pulp chamber and greater color change than other groups (p < 0.05), except the 5% HP group in ΔEab and ΔE00. For ΔWID, the 10% CP AH groups showed greater whitening than other groups (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Whitening toothpaste with up to 5% HP resulted in higher HP permeability and less color change compared to 10% CP. Higher HP commercial concentrations in toothpaste increased whitening effect; however, acidic pH toothpastes exhibited greater HP permeability. Clinical relevance: Whitening toothpastes with high hydrogen peroxide concentrations were less effective than at-home bleaching, resulting in less color change and greater permeability of hydrogen peroxide, potentially increasing the risk of tooth sensitivity.
Hydrogen Peroxide Diffusion through Dental Tissues—In Vitro Study

Abstract:Whitening products commonly utilize hydrogen peroxide (HP) as an active principle, which can penetrate dental tissues with potential side effects due to its low molecular weight. This study aimed to evaluate the HP diffusion of two in-office whitening products, namely 6% VivaStyle Paint On Plus (VS) and Opalescence Boost 40% (OP), in different tooth types. Additionally, the influence of the area of exposure, dental tissue thickness and pulp chamber volume was assessed. Each group consisted of eighteen intact anterior (A), premolar (PM) and molar (M) human teeth, and a positive pulpal pressure model was employed. The samples were analyzed using spectrophotometry, and results were expressed as the mean and 95% confidence interval. Statistical tests and linear regression models were appropriately applied at α = 5%. The total HP (μg) retrieved was as follows: VS-A, 1.333 [1.214, 1.452]; OP-A, 1.538 [1.457, 1.620]; VS-PM, 1.208 [1.123, 1.291]; OP-PM, 3.628 [3.401, 3.855]; VS-M, 2.560 [2.297, 2.823]; and OP-M, 4.197 [3.997, 4.396], with statistically significant differences in diffusion kinetics between whitening products for PM and M. Several HP concentrations attained a minimum cytotoxicity value of 2.22 μg/mL. The regression model shows that OP exposed the pulp chamber to 1.421 μg of HP more than that of VS. Different whitening products can cause cytotoxic HP concentrations in the pulp chamber, with a higher risk observed in molars.

Abstract:ObjectivesThis paper aims to assess the whitening effectiveness and toxicity of tooth-bleaching protocols applied to enamel/dentin disks simulating mandibular incisors (ICs) and premolars (PMs).Materials and methodsA 10% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) gel was applied for 3 × 15, 1 × 15, or 1 × 5 min to enamel/dentin disks simulating mandibular ICs and PMs, and the trans-enamel and trans-dentinal diffusion products were applied to human dental pulp cells (1 h). Professional therapy (35% H2O2—3 × 15 min) was used as positive control, and non-bleached samples were used as negative control. Cell viability and morphology, oxidative stress generation, and odontoblastic marker expression were assessed. The H2O2 diffusion and enamel color change (ΔE) were also analyzed.ResultsThe 10% H2O2 gel induced significant cell viability reduction only when applied 3 × 15 min, with the intensity of oxidative stress and down-regulation of odontoblastic markers being higher in the IC group. The other experimental bleaching protocols caused slight alterations regarding the cell parameters evaluated, with intensity being related to enamel/dentin thickness. These effects were also correlated with higher H2O2 diffusion in the IC group. ΔE values similar as positive control were found for the 10% 3 × 15 and 1 × 15 protocols on IC group, after 4 and 6 sessions.ConclusionApplication of a 10% H2O2 bleaching gel for 15 or 45 min to thin dental substrate significantly minimizes cell toxicity in comparison with highly concentrated gels associated with similar esthetic outcomes by increasing the number of bleaching sessions.Clinical relevanceBleaching gels with 10% H2O2 applied in small teeth for short periods may be an interesting alternative to obtain whitening effectiveness without causing toxicity to pulp cells, which may be able to reduce the tooth hypersensitivity claimed by patients.

Abstract:Background Using hydrogen peroxide (HP) for tooth bleaching may induce various side effects. Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is a promising solution. We aimed to evaluate and compare the efficacy and safety of tooth bleaching using high-concentration HP with CAP with conventional in-office bleaching. Methods Fifty-one discolored extracted human teeth were assigned to three groups: Group 1 (light-emitting diode with 35% HP), Group 2 (CAP with 35% HP), and Group 3 (only CAP). Bleaching was conducted over three sessions for a total of 20 min. The bleaching effect was evaluated based on the changes in color (Δ E 00 and WI D ) and lightness (Δ L and ΔG). Safety was assessed by examining the dark areas on the enamel and monitoring the pulp chamber temperature. The study analyzed how different bleaching methods and durations affected Δ E 00 and ΔWI D using repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). The Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney tests were used for ΔL and dark areas, and one-way ANOVA for ΔG after 20 min of bleaching. Results The Δ E 00 and WI D demonstrated an interaction based on the bleaching method and time, with Group 1 exhibiting the highest Δ E 00 and WI D at all treatment times ( p < 0.001). Δ L* and ΔG did not differ significantly between Groups 1 and 2 ( p = 0.056 and 0.062, respectively) and were lowest in Group 3 ( p < 0.001). Group 1 exhibited the darkest areas and highest pulp chamber temperatures ( p < 0.001). Group 1 exhibited statistically significant color changes. Group 2 demonstrated similar effects, but with enhanced safety profiles. Conclusions Group 2, although displaying a slightly less pronounced color change compared with Group 1, achieved a color alteration readily discernible to the naked eye. This suggests that CAP with 35% HP could be an interesting area for further investigation as an alternative to traditional in-office bleaching methods.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To analyze color change, microhardness and chemical composition of enamel bleached with in-office bleaching agent with different desensitizing application protocols.MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and seventeen polished anterior human enamel surfaces were obtained and randomly divided into nine groups (n = 13). After recording initial color, microhardness and chemical composition, the bleaching treatments were performed as G1: Signal Professional White Now POWDER&LIQUID FAST 38% Hydrogen peroxide(S); G2: S+Flor Opal/0.5% fluoride ion(F); G3: S+GC Tooth Mousse/Casein Phosphopeptide-Amorphous Calcium Phosphate (CPP-ACP) paste(TM); G4: S+UltraEZ/3% potassium nitrate&0.11% fluoride(U); G5: S+Signal Professional SENSITIVE PHASE 1/30% Nano-Hydroxyapatite (n-HAP) suspension(SP); G6: S-F mixture; G7: S-TM mixture; G8: S-U mixture; G9: S-SP mixture. Color, microhardness and chemical composition measurements were repeated after 1 and 14 days. The percentage of microhardness loss (PML) was calculated 1 and 14 days after bleaching. Data were analyzed with ANOVA, Welch ANOVA, Tukey and Dunnett T3 tests (p<0.05).RESULTS: Color change was observed in all groups. The highest ΔE was observed at G7 after 1 day, and ΔE at G8 was the highest after 14 days (p<0.05). A decrease in microhardness was observed in all groups except G6 and G7 after 1 day. The microhardness of all groups increased after 14 days in comparison with 1 day after bleaching (p>0.05). PML was observed in all groups except G6 and G7 after bleaching and none of the groups showed PML after 14 days. No significant changes were observed after bleaching at Ca and P levels and Ca/P ratios at 1 or 14 days after bleaching (p>0.05). F mass increased only in G2 and G6, 1 day after bleaching (p<0.05).CONCLUSIONS: The use of desensitizing agents containing fluoride, CPP-ACP, potassium nitrate or n-HAP after in-office bleaching or mixed in bleaching agent did not inhibit the bleaching effect. However, they all recovered microhardness of enamel 14 days after in-office bleaching.

Abstract:Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of halogen light irradiation on hydrogen peroxide (HP) bleaching by assessing HP concentrations, tooth whitening efficacy, and temperature variations in bleaching agents and pulp chambers. Methods: Sixteen premolars were randomly divided into two groups: Group BL (bleaching agent with halogen light irradiation for 3 X 10 minutes) and Group B (bleaching agent alone). HP concentrations were tested before and after treatment. CIE L*a*b* values of specimens were obtained using a spectrophotometer. Temperatures of bleaching gels and pulpal chambers were recorded by a digital multimeter with K-type thermocouple. Data were analysed using ANOVA and paired t-test. Results: After treatment, HP concentration in group BL was slightly higher than that in group B. Paired t-tests revealed significant differences of Delta E between groups BL and B in all time intervals except at day 35. The temperature rise of bleaching gels and pulpal chambers in group BL was significantly higher than that in group B. Conclusions: In-office bleaching was effective for tooth whitening. The involvement of halogen light was beneficial for the immediate whitening effect but had little impact on the long-term whitening effect.
