Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), that are widely used in different industrial and commercial activities, have become emerging contaminants of concern. Thus, the evaluation of PFAS presence in diverse environmental matrices is of paramount importance, leading to the necessity in development of different types of analytical methods to analyse the trace amounts of PFAS with varying selectivity and sensitivity. Analytical methods that have been advanced and employed for PFAS identification are critically described with their strengths, limitations and future potentials in this review. This review includes, (i) instrument analytical methodologies, mainly focusing on sample preparation, extraction and recovery analysis, (ii) nanoparticle-based sensors, and an app-based smartphone portable sensor, for the monitoring and sensing of PFAS in different environmental matrices. Furthermore, (iii) total oxidisable precursor assay (TOPA), content of total organic fluorine (TOF) as well as total fluorine (TF) are also reviewed, which provide fundamental tools towards achieving precursor quantification and closing mass balance analysis. Photochemical degradation pathways and near-complete defluorination of chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl substances

Abstract:Chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl substances (Cl x –PFAS) are an emerging class of pollutants worldwide. Here we demonstrate near-complete defluorination (that is, cleaving most C–F bonds) of diverse Cl x –PFAS structures and the reaction mechanisms. First, we used ultraviolet/sulfite to degrade various carboxylic acids ( n = 1, 2, 4 and 8 Cl–C n F 2 n COO − and n = 1, 2 and 3 Cl–(CF 2 CFCl) n CF 2 COO − ) and an ether sulfonic acid surfactant (F-53B, Cl–(CF 2 ) 6 –O–(CF 2 ) 2 SO 3 − ). The initial reaction with a hydrated electron cleaved the C–Cl bond. The resulting fluorocarbon radicals ( • CF 2 – on the terminal and – • CF– in the middle) yield C–H or C–SO 3 − , or form a dimer. In particular, we identified a novel reaction pathway with the unexpected HO • radical to cleave the C–C bond (for – • CF–) and yield –COO − . This pathway is critical for rapid and deep defluorination at 90–96% from carboxylic acids and 76% from F-53B. The following treatment with heat/persulfate at pH >12 achieved ~100% overall defluorination from carboxylic acids and 93% from F-53B without producing toxic ClO 3 − from Cl − . This study advances the understanding of PFAS transformation in engineering systems. It also suggests a synergy between molecular design and degradation technology towards sustainable management of fluorochemicals.

Abstract:Ultrasound (US)-assisted electrochemical oxidation (EO) has previously demonstrated its ability to degrade perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). However, the mechanisms of direct electron transfer and indirect oxidation by reactive oxygen species (ROS), as well as the involvement of these ROS, are unclear, particularly with the peroxydisulfate (PDS) electrolyte and the added effect of US. In this study, an US/EO/PDS system was first investigated, achieving nearly 100 % and 80.01 % defluorination for PFOA and perfluorooctane sulfonate, respectively (within 3 h). This US/EO/PDS system exhibited remarkable stability, pH tolerance, and practicality. Further experimental and theoretical studies revealed that the predominant mechanism of PFOA defluorination was indirect oxidation via ROS, rather than direct oxidation at the anode. Although none of these ROS could initiate the degradation of PFOA without additional energy, both ROS (SO center dot(4) > center dot OH > O-1(2) > O center dot(2)) and US/EO contributed to the initial step of PFOA defluorination. Furthermore, US enhanced the generation of ROS and the direct oxidation (electron transfer) ability of EO. The electrons were transferred from PFOA to PDS via the electrode assembly. This study clarified, for the first time, the synergistic effect of US/EO/PDS and the involvement of direct and indirect ROS oxidation in defluorination of PFOA, which shows potential for developing US and EO technology for complete degradation of polyfluoroalkyl substances.
Degradation Pathways and Complete Defluorination of Chlorinated Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (Clx−PFAS)

Abstract:Chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl substances (Clx−PFAS) have been developed and applied for decades, but they have just been recognized as an emerging class of pollutants. This study systematically investigated the degradation of three types of Clx−PFAS structures, including omega-chloroperfluorocarboxylates (ω-ClPFCAs, n=1,2,4,8 Cl−CnF2nCOO−), 9-chlorohexadecafluoro-3-oxanonane-1-sulfonate (F-53B, Cl−(CF2)6−O−(CF2)2SO3−) and polychlorotrifluoroethylene oligomer acids (CTFEOAs, n=1,2,3 Cl−(CF2CFCl)nCF2COO−) under UV/sulfite treatment. The results lead to a series of transformative insights. After initial reductive dechlorination by hydrated electron (eaq–), multiple pathways occur, including hydrogenation, sulfonation, and dimerization. In particular, this study identified the unexpected hydroxylation pathway that convert the terminal ClCF2− into −OOC−, which is critical for the rapid and deep defluorination of F-53B. The hydroxylation of the middle carbons in CTFEOAs also triggers the cleavage of C−C bonds, yielding multiple −COO− groups to promote defluorination. Hence, the Cl atoms in Clx−PFAS enhance defluorination in comparison with the perfluorinated analogs. After UV/sulfite treatment, the HO• oxidation of the residue leads to ~100% defluorination of all ω-ClPFCAs and CTFEOAs, without generating toxic ClO3− from Cl−. This study renovates and further advances the mechanistic understanding of PFAS degradation in “advanced reduction” systems. It also suggests the synergy between “more degradable” molecular design and cost-effective degradation technology to achieve the balanced sustainability of fluorochemicals.

Abstract:Polyfluoroalkyl and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are found in many everyday consumer products, often because of their high thermal and chemical stabilities, as well as their hydrophobic and oleophobic properties1. However, the inert carbon-fluorine (C-F) bonds that give PFASs their properties also provide resistance to decomposition through defluorination, leading to long-term persistence in the environment, as well as in the human body, raising substantial safety and health concerns1-5. Despite recent advances in non-incineration approaches for the destruction of functionalized PFASs, processes for the recycling of perfluorocarbons (PFCs) as well as polymeric PFASs such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) are limited to methods that use either elevated temperatures or strong reducing reagents. Here we report the defluorination of PFASs with a highly twisted carbazole-cored super-photoreductant KQGZ. A series of PFASs could be defluorinated photocatalytically at 40-60 °C. PTFE gave amorphous carbon and fluoride salts as the major products. Oligomeric PFASs such as PFCs, perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), polyfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and derivatives give carbonate, formate, oxalate and trifluoroacetate as the defluorinated products. This allows for the recycling of fluorine in PFASs as inorganic fluoride salt. The mechanistic investigation reveals the difference in reaction behaviour and product components for PTFE and oligomeric PFASs. This work opens a window for the low-temperature photoreductive defluorination of the 'forever chemicals' PFASs, especially for PTFE, as well as the discovery of new super-photoreductants.
Near-complete destruction of PFAS in aqueous film-forming foam by integrated photo-electrochemical processes

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are highly recalcitrant pollutants in the water environment worldwide. Aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) used for firefighting is a major source of PFAS pollution. However, complete defluorination (that is, cleaving all C–F bonds into F − ions) of PFAS by non-thermal technology is rare. The destruction of the PFAS mixture in the complex organic matrix of AFFF is even more challenging. Here we designed and demonstrated an ultraviolet/sulfite–electrochemical oxidation (UV/S–EO) process. The tandem UV/S–EO leverages the complementary advantages of UV/S and EO modules in the PFAS transformation mechanism and the engineering process design (for example, foaming control, chemical dosage and energy consumption). At ambient temperature and pressure, the UV/S–EO realized near-complete defluorination and mineralization of most PFAS and organics in AFFF (50–5,000 times diluted, containing up to 200 mg l −1 organic fluorine and 3,764 mg l −1 organic carbon). This work highlights the integration of molecular-level insight and engineering design towards solving the major challenges of AFFF water pollution.

Abstract:The effectiveness of electrochemical reductive defluorination is impeded by the low environmental concentrations of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and the robust nature of C−F bonds. In this work, we investigate the zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) as a promising catalyst for PFASs remediation. We show that ZIF-67 hold promise for simultaneous adsorption and reductive defluorination of 2-(trifluoromethyl) acrylic acid (TFMAA). Following a 48-hour treatment, the ZIF-67 modification significantly improves the adsorption of TFMAA onto the cathode surface, achieving removal and defluorination efficiencies of 99.66% and 97.16%, respectively (C 0 = 5 mg L −1 , applied voltage of −1.2 V vs. Ag/AgCl). Furthermore, the atomic H*, catalyzed by the Co−N 4 structure, boosts the reductive defluorination of TFMAA through indirect mechanisms, while the nitrogen loss due to carbonization further enhances the catalytic defluorination efficiency. This research presents a novel electrode material for PFASs defluorination and offers mechanistic insights into the defluorination process.

Abstract:Perfluorinated and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large class of synthetic organic chemicals whose structures contain fully or partially fluorinated carbon chains with different chain lengths and functional groups, and have been widely used since they were first synthesized in the 1940 s. Their unique fluorine-carbon bonds provide exceptional thermal and chemical stability, rendering them highly persistent in the environment, often referred to as 'forever chemicals' in contemporary scientific literature. PFAS have been found to have adverse effects on human health and environmental quality. PFAS degradation hinges on the disruption of carbon-carbon and carbon-fluorine bonds. This review delineates the degradation technologies of PFAS, including chemical oxidation, chemical reduction, ultrasonication, photolysis, electrochemistry, thermal degradation, mechanochemistry and microbial degradation. It offers a comparative analysis of these eight technologies based on degradation efficiency, defluorination efficiency, and degradation rate. Among these technologies, mechanochemical transformation is emerging as a promising approach in detoxifying PFAS. Mechanochemical treatment can be achieved at ambient temperature and pressure by the high-energy milling of the polluted materials. Future work should focus on the scaleup and economics of the advanced treatment technologies to treat and remediate PFAS and other highly recalcitrant pollutants.

Abstract:UV-generated hydrated electrons play a critical role in the defluorination reaction of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). However, limited experimental data hinder insight into the effects of the structural characteristics of emerging PEAS on their defluorination abilities. Therefore, in this study, we adopted quantity structure-activity relationship models based on machine learning algorithms to develop the predictive models of the relative defluorination ability of PEAS. Five-fold cross-validations were used to perform the hyperparameter tuning of the models, which suggested that the gradient boosting algorithms with PaDEL descriptors as the best model possessed superior predictive performance (R-test(2) = 0.944 and RMSEtest = 0.114). The importance of the descriptor indicated that the electrostatic properties and topological structure of the compounds significantly affected the defluorination ability of the PFAS. For the emerging PEAS the best model showed that most compounds, such as potential alternatives of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid, were recalcitrant to reductive defluorination, whereas perfluoroalkyl ether carboxylic acids had relatively stronger defluorination abilities than perfluorooctanoic acid. The theoretical calculations implied that additional electrons on PFAS could cause molecular deconstruction, such as changes in the dihedral angle involved in the carbon chain, as well as C-F bond and ether C-O bond cleavages. In general, the current computational models could be useful for screening emerging PFAS to assess their defluorination ability for the molecular design of fluorochemical structures. Structural Dependence of Reductive Defluorination of Linear PFAS Compounds in a UV/Electrochemical System

Abstract:Per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), legacy chemicals used in firefighting and the manufacturing of many industrial and consumer goods, are widely found in groundwater resources, along with other regulated compounds, such as chlorinated solvents. Due to their strong C–F bonds, these molecules are extremely recalcitrant, requiring advanced treatment methods for effective remediation, with hydrated electrons shown to be able to defluorinated these compounds. A combined photo/electrochemical method has been demonstrated to dramatically increase defluorination rates, where PFAS molecules sorbed onto appropriately functionalized cathodes charged to low cell potentials (−0.58 V vs Ag/AgCl) undergo a transient electron transfer event from the electrode, which "primes" the molecule by reducing the C–F bond strength and enables the bond's dissociation upon the absorption of a hydrated electron. In this work, we explore the impact of headgroup and chain length on the performance of this two-electron process and extend this technique to chlorinated solvents. We use isotopically labeled PFAS molecules to take advantage of the kinetic isotope effect and demonstrate that indeed PFAS defluorination is likely driven by a two-electron process. Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) pose serious human health and environmental risks due to their persistence and toxicity. Among the available PFAS remediation options, the electrochemical approach is promising with better control. In this review, recent advances in the decontamination of PFAS from water using several state-of-the-art electrochemical strategies, including electro-oxidation, electro-adsorption, and electro-coagulation, were systematically reviewed. We aimed to elucidate their design principles, underlying working mechanisms, and the effects of operation factors (e.g., solution pH, applied voltage, and reactor configuration). The recent developments of innovative electrochemical systems and novel electrode materials were highlighted. In addition, the development of coupled processes that could overcome the shortcomings of low efficiency and high energy consumption of conventional electrochemical systems was also emphasized. This review identified several major knowledge gaps and challenges in the scalability and adaptability of efficient electrochemical systems for PFAS remediation. Materials science and system design developments are forging a path toward sustainable treatment of PFAS-contaminated water through electrochemical technologies.

Abstract:Remediation of per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in global water systems is a critical human and environmental health challenge facing society. PFAS consumption is associated with a litany of adverse health effects, and our knowledge of these dangers is still evolving. Current techniques to remove PFAS from water include adsorption to media (e.g. granular activated carbon, ion-exchange resin), nanofiltration, and reverse osmosis. However, these processes create a concentrated PFAS residual that requires further management. Destructive techniques are therefore needed to detoxify these residuals. Oxidative techniques have garnered the most attention (e.g. supercritical water oxidation, electrochemical oxidation) but are energy intensive and potentially form toxic by-products. As an alternative, several groups have researched advanced reduction processes that form aqueous electrons, but these processes are still chemical and energy intensive (e.g. ultraviolet/SO 3 2 − , electron beam). This concise review therefore focuses on whether electrochemical reduction — a chemical-free, modular process — could be technically feasible for PFAS destruction.

Abstract:Abstract Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) represent a group of compounds, such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctylsulfonic acid (PFOS), that have raised environment and human health concerns. Opportunities exist for improved efficiency and scalable technologies over more broad-spectrum approaches for capture and utilization of these compounds from contaminated sources. In this study, we introduce a new type of reusable polymeric sorbent (perfluoropolyether-containing resin (PFPE-IEX+)) for rapid, efficient, and selective removal of multiple PFAS impurities from various contaminated water sources. The sorbent contains a hydrophobic polystyrenic backbone, with positively charged quaternary ammonium functional group and PFPE segments being crosslinked by divinylbenzene. The PFPE-IEX + resin shows superior PFAS sorption efficiency compared with commercially available sorbents in real PFAS contaminated media. The resin achieves > 98% removal efficiency and > 500 mg/g sorption capacity for all types of examined PFAS, including the short-chain heptafluorobutyric acid (PFBA) and hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA). We dedicated efforts to achieve efficient PFAS removal without breakthrough and subsequent resin regeneration with ~ 100% PFAS recovery in a proof-of-concept cartridge setup using real PFAS contaminated water sources, including potable water and landfill leachate. The recycled PFAS was then used as electrolyte additives to facilitate the formation of a ZnF 2 rich protection layer on the anode surface to improve the cycling stability of aqueous zinc batteries. The outcomes of this study not only offer valuable guidance to the design and preparation of efficient sorbents applicable in cartridge-based PFAS removal from the environment, but also present an important strategy to reuse the recycled PFAS in battery systems to turn an environmental concern to a societal benefit to wealth.
Theoretical and experimental insights into electron-induced efficient defluorination of perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluorooctane sulfonate by mesoporous plasma

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) are global environmental pollutants and pose significant threats to environmental safety and human health. Defluorination of PFOA and PFOS was investigated theoretically and practically in a mesoporous plasma system in this study. Rapid and highly efficient defluorination was realized, and 98% and 65% defluorination rate for PFOA and PFOS, respectively, were obtained within 60 min of treatment. Electrons generated in the mesoporous plasma system played a decisive role in PFOA and PFOS defluorination; other species, including O-1(2) and center dot OH, also contributed to defluorination. C-F, C-C, and C-S bonds were broken by plasma oxidation; various shorter-chain perfluomcarboxylic acids, polyfluomalkyl substances, and alcohols were produced. PFOA and PFOS decomposition mechanisms involved electron transfer, defluorination, decarboxylation, and hydroxylation reactions. Desulfonation reactions were also involved in PFOS decomposition. Density functional theory calculations identified sites susceptible to be attacked and the main degradation pathways. Effective defluorination of PFOA and PFOS reduced their toxicities. Furthermore, its potential for actual surface water treatment was also determined.

Abstract:Per-and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a class of persistent compounds that are resistant to degradation. Here we developed an effective method of degrading perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) by hydrated electrons (e(aq)( -)) that are generated from 3-indole-acetic-acid (IAA) upon UV irradiation. The method takes advantage of spatial proximity of IAA and PFOS by their co-sorption to an organic polymer, 12-aminolauric acid (ALA), which was pre-intercalated into the interlayer space of an expandable clay mineral, montmorillonite. The interlayer spacing of this clay nanocomposite is greatly expanded relative to unmodified montmorillonite. The maximum adsorption capacity of IAA and PFOS is 168 and 1550 mmol/kg, respectively. This process achieved 40-70% defluorination of a 10 ppm PFOS solution at neutral pH in a 325 mL vessel. The presence of bicarbonate and chloride ions, or natural groundwater showed a minimal impact on PFOS degradation. Based on identification of prominent degradation products, a degradation pathway is proposed, where the primary degradation process is breakage of the C-F bonds (with fluorine replaced by hydrogen), with some cleavage of the C-C bond. This approach provides an alternative for treating concentrated PFAS solutions under ambient conditions. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Per-fluorinated compound (PFC) is a kind of persistent and refractory organic pollutants with high concerns in recent years. Perfluorooctane sulphonate (PFOS) and Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are the most typical per-fluorinated compounds in the water environment. In this work, a new treatment method-microwave discharge plasma in liquid (MDPL) is used to study the defluorination of PFOA and PFOS. The effects of initial concentration of pollutants, microwave input power, distance between electrode and liquid according to the characteristics of pollutants on the defluorination rate are studied. The results show that the defluorination of PFOA and PFOS by MDPL is excellent, with the defluorination of 58.4% and 26.8%. Because MDPL has high mass transfer efficiency and the discharge process is accompanied by the production of ultraviolet light and reactive species. Adding Fe 2+ to synergistic degradation, the defluorination of PFOA is 82.9%, PFOS is 52.6%. The defluorination increased by 24.5% and 25.8%, the synergistic factor reached 2.18 and 2.37. Reactive species experiments confirms that e aq - is the key reactive species that initiates the decomposition of PFOA and PFOS. In addition, the characteristics of intermediates and free radicals in the process of defluorination are discussed. Finally, the decomposition mechanism of PFOA and PFOS are analyzed and the degradation pathway of the reaction processes is given. This work proves that MDPL is efficient for the defluorination of PFOA and PFOS, which also provides a new insight for the treatment of PFC pollution.

Near-Quantitative Defluorination of Perfluorinated and Fluorotelomer Carboxylates and Sulfonates with Integrated Oxidation and Reduction

Abstract:The UV-sulfite reductive treatment using hydrated electrons (eaq–) is a promising technology for destroying perfluorocarboxylates (PFCAs, CnF2n+1COO–) in any chain length. However, the C–H bonds formed in the transformation products strengthen the residual C–F bonds and thus prevent complete defluorination. Reductive treatments of fluorotelomer carboxylates (FTCAs, CnF2n+1–CH2CH2–COO–) and sulfonates (FTSAs, CnF2n+1–CH2CH2–SO3–) are also sluggish because the ethylene linker separates the fluoroalkyl chain from the end functional group. In this work, we used oxidation (Ox) with hydroxyl radicals (HO•) to convert FTCAs and FTSAs to a mixture of PFCAs. This process also cleaved 35–95% of C–F bonds depending on the fluoroalkyl chain length. We probed the stoichiometry and mechanism for the oxidative defluorination of fluorotelomers. The subsequent reduction (Red) with UV-sulfite achieved deep defluorination of the PFCA mixture for up to 90%. The following use of HO• to oxidize the H-rich residues led to the cleavage of the remaining C–F bonds. We examined the efficacy of integrated oxidative and reductive treatment of n = 1–8 PFCAs, n = 4,6,8 perfluorosulfonates (PFSAs, CnF2n+1–SO3–), n = 1–8 FTCAs, and n = 4,6,8 FTSAs. A majority of structures yielded near-quantitative overall defluorination (97–103%), except for n = 7,8 fluorotelomers (85–89%), n = 4 PFSA (94%), and n = 4 FTSA (93%). The results show the feasibility of complete defluorination of legacy PFAS pollutants and will advance both remediation technology design and water sample analysis.The near-quantitative defluorination of perfluorinated and fluorotelomer carboxylates and sulfonates with integrated oxidation and reduction increases the feasibility of complete defluorination of legacy PFAS pollutants and will advance both remediation technology design and water sample analysis.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The development of efficient defluorination technology is an important issue because the kind of emerging pollutant of hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (GenX) as an alternative to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has the higher environmental risks. In the UV/bisulfite system, we first developed a hydrophobic confined alpha-Fe2O3 nanoparticle layer rich in oxygen vacancies, which accelerated the enrichment of HSO3 - and GenX on the surface and pores through electrostatic attraction and hydrophobic interaction, retaining more hydrated electrons (eaq -) and rapidly destroying GenX under UV excitation. Especially, under anaerobic and aerobic conditions, the degradation percentage of GenX obtain nearly 100%, defluorination of GenX to 88 and 57% respectively. It was amazed to find that the three parallel H/F exchange pathways triggered by the rapid reactions of eaq - and GenX, which were unique to anaerobic conditions, improved the efficiency of fluoride removal and weaken the interference of dissolved oxygen and H+. Therefore, this study provided an available material and mechanism for sustainable fluoride removal from wastewater in aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
